Wanted to get different opinions about how SQL Developer is being used.
We are fixing to upgrade from SQL 2000 to 2005 and are going to need to buy some licenses. I told my manager I didn't know why they had a processor license for the SQL test box and not just buy the developer copy for each developer to use on the server. This would free up 4 processor licenses.
From my understanding Developer is licensed per person to be used for development, and testing.
Now if you want to load test this do you have to buy a license for every machine? Is this where they stick it to you?
Was wondering what other people are doing out there.
Hello all. I'm giving serious thought on changing gears withing the IT world. For several years I have been a software developer who has been fortunate enough to have been involved in the needed databases. From just sketching out tables for the DBA to doing the database from the ground up and maintaining it during production. Along the way I've known that I didn't do as quality of a job as a knowledgeable DBA would do but given the situations I made do just fine.
I am considering switching gears to the database side only, coding as secondary. Since I am basically familier with most aspects of SQL Server in a general way, I am looking to take that knowledge and become a "Professional". What I am looking for is a few books to help out. Maybe a "Become a DBA for Software Developers" or something. I know that mining these and other forums are very valuble but I'd like some other training materials as well.
Have I been clear enough on what I am looking for? I don't quite feel like I have.
Basically, what would you recommend for a good software developer who is looking on switching to becoming a good database person?
I'd like to stay in SQL Server for now, since that is what they use here and it would give me an opportunity to practice.
Also, do you see value in the studying process for certifications in this area?
I can't tell if the SQL Developer install upgraded the service, but left the SqlExpress version information, or if I'm still really only using SqlExpress.
Also, my intended target is SQL Enterprise, so if I am using SQL Express am I asking for trouble when I go to move the database over? Are the database formats compatible?
I've poked around trying to search for this answer for a while and haven't turned anything up. Maybe I'm searching on the wrong terms...
There are conflicting postings everywhere about this. I built a small site using VWD and SQL Server Express, but need to convert to Sql Server 2005 Developer because the DB will exceed 4Gb. Tried to install and could not connect or use from VWD. Tried to uninstall, got into large mess with the byzantine uninstall process, and have now started with a clean machine.
I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer first, then installed VWD Express 2008 without installing SQL Server Express. VWD won't let me connect to an existing database, won't let me add a new database and doesn't even show the Database Tools option under the Tools menu.
Is there someone with specific knowledge that can provide any enlightenment? Would be much appreciated.
Can someone here confirm or deny that Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition doesn't work with SQL Server Developer Edition 2005?
I was about to order SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 on Amazon, to use with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, when I read a user comment that the two are incompatible with each other. Does anyone know for sure if that is true?
What I'm wanting to do is develop an ASP.NET web application on a web host using a SQL Server database. I use VS2003 and SQL Server Enterprise 2000 at work, but I'd like to learn the 2005 editions for this side project. I don't own any of the developer tools/IDEs personally, so I'm trying to find the most affordable way to do this for my home business.
I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.
i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.
I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).
i have just downloaded .net framework and web matrix, this is so i can test my .aspx pages witout going directly on the web. but i now have a new problem because i'm not on the web i can't access my sql, so i need to be able to create sql databases on my desktop and test them. obviously i can't afford the full sql server but there is a developer edition for £35 would this allow me to create and link to them through web matrix and if it does would i then be able to upload the created sql database to the web or is the software for testing only and will it block me from actually publishing the database?
I have been working in MS SQL Server for around 6 years ( versions : 7.0 and 2000 ). I have been extensively involved in database design and development. I have not much involved much in administrative activites.
I need to know what are the core activities which makes a Database Developer as a complete DBA ?
I am web developer and i decided to use sql server 2005 for my projects ... is there a book you recommended for learning SQL Server 2005 Programming Thank you
hey everyone...guys i'll be honest i am a noob to web developer but i want to learn this real bad..i have been given a task from my teacher to make a table in SQL...i am really confused how to create a table? i have used the sql+ an old version before but i dont find any sort of an editor excep for the visual web developer itself..i can see a table designer but it is not accessible...i am really sorry for my noobness but i really want to learn...awaiting replies
I am trying to install the Developer edition I think it is installed properly but how can I connect to it? What management tool can I use? You can probably see that I am unfamiliar with SQL 2005 . These might be dumb questions but is there a tutorial on how to install SQL 2005 connect it and then connect Visual Studio Pro to it?
Hi, I want to start my carrier as a Sql Developer. Can anyone suggest me what exactly i have to do as a developer. I know how to write Stored Procs, triggers, creating tables , views , indexes. What else will be the responsbilities as a Developer. Thank you very much.
I'm looking for a senior d.b. developer with 5+ year of SQL programming, using relational database such as MS SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase with 2+ years focusing on MS SQL Server 7.0 and MS SQL Server 2000.
I have more details - just send me an email and i can provide them to you -thanks!
Hi Guys, Im new to SQL Server 2005. In our organization, I was tasked to implement and maintain MS SQL 2005 database. We have several system developer and they are using MS SQL 2005 as a backend database.
Currenty, they are responsible for designing their own databases required by their application. My concern is that I want to restrict access to my SQL server that only the DB administrator can access the database server.
My question is that, how they can design their databases without accessing the database server. Is it possible for them to access SQL Server with some restriction? I mean, I want to impose some security measures that they can only access objects within their scope.
Our current scenario is that they have MS SQL Express version installed in their pc and from that terminal they can design and test their application and after everything is in place, Its me who will migrate their respective databases for production in MS SQL 2005 server.
Hoping you can provide me the best alterntive to this query.
Hi, Just starting out... I'm a SQL Svr 2K developer. I will be starting a class in SQL Svr 2005 for DBA's.
Anyway, wanted to know if the developer edition will run on my home PC, which runs WIN XP Pro and has lots of memory and storage... but of course it's a 32 bit machine... seems like it should be OK... just looking for confirmation.
I asked this in the SQL Architecture forum and got no response. That might have been the wrong place.
I am DBA and am not real clear on development issues. We have a BI application, compete with OLAP cubes and much more, using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
One of our Management Office big-wigs has put in a request for himself and two others to have a complete instance of SQL Server 2005 installed on their laptops so they can design reports using Reporting Services independent of each other. He says a shared dev environment won't do because different developers would step on each others toes. I don't buy that, but let's continue:
Some of my DBA colleagues are a bit bent out of shape that a developer would want SSIS on his laptop. I'm not sure this is a reasonable attitude. I do, however, understand concerns about production data being ported to the guy's laptop.
What do you think is reasonable? Make him build a shareable development environment or let him develop on his laptop?
I've downloaded 2005 Express but I want to do SSIS and don't see any way to do that with Express. The Developer Edition apparently has all features, but says you can upgrade to Enterprise, which I don't need (Standard would probably be fine).
Here are my questions:
1) Is there any way to develop SSIS packages in Developer and run them in Express?
2) Is it possible to upgrade Developer to something less than Enterprise, such as Workgroup or Standard?
3) This page is titled "How to Obtain SQL Server 2005 Developer Ediiton" but doesn't explain how to obtain it. Instead it talks about which edition to select, trial software, blah blah:
Are there any catches or preconditions to buying Developer, or is it just a simple $50 (or less, depending on where you buy it)? I want to explore more 2005 features than Express offers but I don't want a trial version that will expire.
Thanks for any clarification that can be provided.
We have 10 developers. All 10 use ONE server to do development work (design, coding, testing ONLY!). We have a Developer Edition licence for EACH developer. Is this OK? We have 10GB plus in test data and do not want to replicate that to each desktop.
According to the Developer Edition EULA, I would say NO. It looks like you can only have one developer (and a few testers, I forget the number) per server. It says NOTHING about having more than one developer access the same server under this license. The Developer Edition EULA appears to be designed around installing a database on a desktop just for that developer, not installing a central database that all developers use.
We've just completed a migration to SQL Server 2005, and I'm wondering what needs to be installed on our developer workstations and whether it requires a licence or not. Sorry, i know this is a dumb newbie question!
Well, just what the subject line says: Is there a developer version of IIS one can download? If so, I can't find it. All I can find are the 180 day trials.
I have a home network that has 2 XP Pro machines on it. Can you use a SQL server 2005 DB remotely? I have the management tool on the machine that has VS 2005 but when I try to connect to SQL server I get an error. 'A connectiopn was established with the server but an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. This failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings sQL server does not allow rempte connections (provider:named PipesProvider, err=0) I would like to store the data on the server on a different machine -- can this be done using the home/small office network?
I'm looking to buy a book about SQL, T-SQL, stored procedures, etc. I'm a web developer, so I don't need a book for a SQL Server administrator. I need a book that tells me what I as a developer need to know about SQL. I'm currently using Visual Studio, SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET 2.0, and VB.NET (and fairly new to all of those) if that makes any difference. The bulk of my web developing experience has been with PHP and MySQL so this is new territory for me. I hope all that makes sense. I would appreciate any suggestions for such a book. Thanks! -Mathminded p.s. I bought a bunch of Wrox books and haven't had them long enough to decide if I like them: "Professional ASP.NET 2.0", "Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Security, Membership, and Role Management", "ASP.NET 2.0 Website Programming", and "Visual Basic 2005". I thought I'd check with the experts before investing in another book. :-)
Hi, Can I use Sql Express Edition with Visual Web Developer at the same time? I tried but I always get a permission error. Also, when I try to attach a database (that I created in Visual Web Developer) to the SQL Express i cant find the .mdf file, I don't know why? Is there is a way where I can specify a folder where I can keep the mdf and allow both applications to access it?
Hey, Im trying to make a website that I can enter information on the website and have it transfered to the database the problem is the website and database are on two different computers , how do I copy the data base onto the other computer and have it will be ready to take information from the website and store it in the database?
Hi all! I have an issue with my DB I deleted my developer 2000 and then redownloaded it but now I cant access my local host which I was able to do befor the error I am getting is A connection cannot be established to (local) any opinions Also I was wondering is the developer editions only for local host or should I be able to hook it up to a DataBase on my hosting service? Thanks Jonny
I am a developer in need of setting up a SQL Server test environment for many users.
Can the Dev Edition be used as a back-end to handle this type of testing? Are my limited to one connection from my development machine?
As you can tell, <sarcastic tone>i am having a real fun time with this one</sarcastic tone>. Licensing terms are an area that i tried but sometimes cann't stay out of.
My employer recently purchased an MSDN subscription for each developer in our group. I sort of feel like a kid in toy store. I do not know what to play with first. Anyways. I have noticed there are several versions of SQL Server 2000. Enterprise, Personal and Developer. I undestand the difference between Enterprise and Personal Editions, but I do not know what make Developer different. Does any one know?
lo all, when i try and connect web developer to a sql file i get "An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to sql server 2005,this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections(provider:Named Pipes Provider, error : 40-Could not open a connection to SQL server)" thx for any help Charlie
