Compacting A SQL CE Database Programmatically In A ClickOnce Application

May 12, 2008

I'm trying to compact a SQL CE database programmatically. I've copied the code from MSDN, and it's fine as far as it goes, but there's a problem tying to compact a database in a ClickOnce application because you don't know the path to the database. You have to use the "|DataDirectory|" in your connection string to signify the path to the database. But when I try the file operations to replace the old database with the compacted version, I get an error message that the path "|DataDirectory|" is not valid. Here's the code:

SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine("Data Source = " + src + "; Password =" + txtPassword.Text);

try

{

engine.Compact("Data Source = " + dest + "; Password =" + txtPassword.Text);

ShowMsg("Compacting...", MsgType.NoError);

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

MessageBox.Show("There was an error completing the operation: " + ex.Message);

}

engine.Dispose();

File.Delete(src);

File.Move(dest, src);

(dest is = src + ".tmp", i.e., a path to a tmp file to hold the database while compacting).

How do I locate the files to copy if I can't use "|DataDirectory|"?

Help With Connection String After Clickonce Install From Visual Studio 2005

Apr 7, 2008

I have a sql express .mdf that is located in c:appdirectorymydb.mdf whilst developing an application. During development my connection string uses the above path to connect to the db. e.g.

"server = .sqlexpress; Integrated Security=True; database=C:appdirectorymydb.mdf"

I have published the app using click once in visual studio.net which places the db in : C:Documents and Settingsuser.nameLocal SettingsApps2.0DataJN1WL1DJ.X7B ... 08ed2810aab2abData

When i am executing the application following a clickonce install, what should I use in my connection string for the path to the db ? or where can I find the above path (e.g. in the registry) so that I can provide it to the connection string ?

Alternatively, can I specify where the DB is going to be installed (via click once). e.g. in my app directory under program files ?

I have tried searching what seems like everywhere for a solution to this problem and as a last resort thought it worth posting the question.

Many thanks in advance.

ASP.NET, VS2005, SSE: Cannot Get Web Application Service

Nov 11, 2005

Hi everyone,
I am attempting to drag the SQLDataSource control to my webpage to initiate a connection to my SQLServer Express instance on the same system. The control will drop correctly, but when I click on the "Configure Data Source" in the SQLDataSource Tasks popup panel, I get the following error message:
Following error occured while getting connection string information from configuration."Cannot get web application service"
It then sends me to the configure data source window where it asks me to choose my data connection. However, there is nothing in the pulldown, and the "New Connection" button does nothing.
I have the SSE data connection defined and visible in the Server Explorer, and there is a connection string defined in the web.config file that points to the server and database I wish to access.
I'm on day 2 of my excursions with VS2005 Pro, so I feel that I'm missing something huge, but otherwise obvious that's different in the configuration of VS2005 as opposed to VS2003, which I have no issues with.
Thanks!Chris

Is This A Good Scenario For A Service Broker Application Usage

Jan 23, 2007

Hi,

Please excuse me if I get some terms wrong - I am not a developer!!

I am working for a company who has a requirement to interface to a customer to query for work. The customer has an established Web Services that it uses for external interfacing, these services are passive at their end, in that it will be my clients who initiate all the communications using SOAP, receiving responses in XML.

There are, as I see it, seven conversations.

Receiving Datasets

1. Requests All new Jobs - This will be a post to a HTP with a list of job numbers sent back, These jobs will then need to be polled from the same webservice.

2. Job Changes - existing jobs that have changed definitions (costs etc..)- simular to above

3. Job Changes - Appointment Times

Sending Datasets

1. Completed Jobs - one at a time

2. Cancelled Jobs

3. Appointments (I believe this is responses to 1 and 3 above)

4. Subsequent Jobs - new work derived from initial Job.

I believe the sending datasets will be one way only (ie POST).

I have suggested using Service Broker for this application, with a custom App sitting inbetween ServiceBroker and the Web Service to deal with the HTTP POSTS and GETS, and communicating with the Service Broker, posting to queues and reading from them.

Is this viable??

Many Thaks

Giving Application/Service Accounts EXEC Permissions

Apr 30, 2008

In SQL 2005, is this an acceptable (prefered) way to give an application account EXEC permissions for sprocs and funcs in a specific database?

CREATE ROLE db_executor
GRANT EXECUTE TO db_executor

And then of course assign my user to this role on the database level.

I am trying to get away from adding exec to every sproc "manually" and then of course also having to add exec for any new sprocs that get added into the database.

Deploy With Clickonce

Dec 23, 2007

Question about deploying a SQL compact database with Clickonce. Deploying the first time is straightforward and that works OK but I am not so sure about consequent releases, how do I deal with the that?
If I mark the file as dont deploy that will, of course, work fine for those that have installed the first release but not for thoses that havent.
What about if I make a change to the database, adding a table for example. How do I go about that? I obviously dont want to loose any of the existing data?

Thx and Happy Christmas to all

ClickOnce For SQL Express Database?

Jul 19, 2006

I'm working on an app in Visual Studio 2005 that needs to have installed locally SQL Express to handle its own data.

This app is in a strong upgrading process. I've been using clickonce to publish the app and let my users upgrade automatically (by the way this works amazing ...).

Yet many times changes to the DB are made. Is there a simple way to upgrade their local SQL Express DB like click once does with the app?

Thanks.

SQL Express On Vista With ClickOnce

Feb 7, 2007

SQL Express CTP 2 provides a checkbox that will enrol the user installing the software as a database administrator. If the user fails to check this box, they run as an ordinary user, and hence are not allowed to perform functions such as create database.

In the process of deploying an application via ClickOnce, if SQL Express is not present it will be installed automatically. Also, in the process of deploying a ClickOnce application, we should usually expect to need to create a new database. Currently, if the user takes the default install of SQL Express they will not be a database administrator and will not be able to create the database. The installation will thus fail.

Is anything being done with SQL Express for ClickOnce applications deploying to Vista that will allow us to automatically enrol the user installing SQL Express as a database administrator?

ClickOnce Private Installation Issue

May 12, 2007

I'm working on a VB.Net 2005 application that uses SQLCE as a backend database.

Following the instructions on how to do a private installation (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb219482.aspx) so that admin rights were not needed, I successfully got it working as a ClickOnce deployment. But today during a demo for a client, they ran into this error while installing the latest version from our publishing URL:

"Unable to install or run the application. Application requires that assembly System.Data.SQLServerCe version 9.0.42 .... must be installed in the Global Assembly Cache."

Basically it's saying the user isn't an admin so they can't install. This is the problem I went to great lengths to try to avoid, and is the reason we are using SQL CE in the first place: admin rights are not required to install our application's database. To our knowledge, SQL CE is the only Microsoft product that fits this scenario.

Now, I haven't changed anything in the publishing of the application to my knowledge, and when I check the project prerequisites, the SQLCE engine still isn't in there (as summarized at the above URL). Again following the instructions at the URL above for private installation, the required assemblies are still part of the project's files.

It must be something I did to cause this, but I have no memory of changing anything in regards to this part of the application. Our deadline is in 4 days and I cannot continue development until I get past this issue.

Where do I look to fix this problem? A little help would be greatly appreciated.

How Do I Clean Up Database Deleted By ClickOnce With T-SQL?

May 12, 2006

I posted this in the SQL Server Express forum as well...

My app deployed via ClickOnce. It ships with a database creation script which creates the database in the ClickOnce data directory. Upon uninstall, the entire data folder is deleted successfully. But if you then reinstall the app, SQL Server Express still thinks the database exists. Right now, to get a re-install to work, I have to go into Management Studio Express, click on the db (get an pop-up error as the physical db file is no longer there) and then click delete.

So my question is... what system proc should I execute in the db creation script before I run the CREATE DATABASE command?

Deploying SQL Express Database Files With ClickOnce App Using OLE

Jan 18, 2008

I've written a ClickOnce app that deploys a Sql Server Express data file (.mdf) and log file (.ldf) along with the other application files. SQL Express SP2 is a prerequisite for this app. After the applicaiton installs and starts up it copies these files to a specific folder and attaches them by calling the AttachDatabase() method of a Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server object.

This method works fine using Windows XP, however when I run it on Windows Vista I get the following exception:

Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.FailedOperationException: Attach database failed for Server 'localhostSQLEXPRESS'. ---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "C:WashMasterDatabasewasshmaster.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".

This exception occurs when I try to programmatically attach the database.

I've searched through the MSDN forums for a solution and I've only found two suggestions:

1.) Create all database connections using a User Instance.
2.) Create the database (using SQL) in the target folder, rather than copying it over from the deployment folder.

I don't like the idea of using User Instances because my entire data access layer is currently written using Ole and I would rather not rewrite it if I don't have to. I cannot find any way to use User Instances with Ole.

I also don't like the idea of creating the database using SQL because it is fairly large.

Here are my questions:

1.) Can User Instances be used with Ole?

2.) Can I somehow programmatically set the permissions of the copied data and log files so that SQL Express can access them without error?

3.) Is there a better method for doing what I'm trying to do or am I destined to have to either rewrite in data access layer so I can use User Instances or create my large database rather than copy it to the target directory?

Thanks.

ClickOnce Path Names Are Too Long For SQL Server Express Identifiers

May 11, 2006

I'm posting this in the ClickOnce forums as well...

My application doesn't include the .mdf and .ldf files, rather it creates the database the first time the application is run using a script that is included in the build. I want to create the database in the ClickOnce data directory. The problem I'm having is that SQL Server complains when I execute the CREATE DATABASE command as follows:

CREATE DATABASE [C:Documents and SettingsxxxxxLocal SettingsApps2.0DataPQCK6EXN.5KGAW630RPT.VGOifie..tion_014028c05b1d6ec6_0001.0002_0e86966f19503c89DataiFieldMobile.mdf] ON PRIMARY

END

Here's the error:

SQLCe Errors When Doing Developing A SQL Mobile Application With Visual Studio 2005 And SQL Server 2005 Tutorial

Feb 26, 2008

I'm attempting to use RDA to synchronize a pocket pc emulator with SQL Server 2005 database by following tutorial http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa454892.aspx, which uses AdvWorksMobile database that comes with SQL Server 2005.

When get to testing of "To test application features " ( step 4 of the merge replication setup lab ), I am receiving SQLCe Exception errors.

ORIGINALLY, I was able to deploy an application and view the local database on the emulator, but once I clicked "InitSinc" button, I received an error.

"Failure to connect to SQL Server with provided connection information. SQL Server does not" exist, access is denied because the SQL user is not a valid user on the SQL Server, or the password is incorrect.
Found this error listed in Server Agent Errors log http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172357.aspx, but it wasn't very helpful since it doesn't provide any suggestions on fixing the problems.

I am brand new to SQL CE Server , mobile programming and .NET framework in general so please bare with me

All the connections / security settings, etc that were set up were taken from a tutorial so I am not sure what SQLCeServer is complaining about. Reading up on the error on the web didn't help, it all pointed to making sure that the snapshot folder had correct permissions set up. I verified that MACHINENAMEUISR_MACHINENAME guest user had Read rights to the database so I don't think that piece is the problem. Otherwise ,Merge publication has been setup in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio by following the tutorial.

I am trying to run this sync on my home pc so there should be no issues with any user permissions

I have IIS installed

I did NOT have SQL Server Agent running in management studio at this time

I am trying to run this tutorial on an XP machine, which is my regular home PC so I dont think there are any special networking settings to consider

I am able to hit http://localhost/AdvWorksMobile/sqlcesa30.dll from my pc OK, but when I try to hit it from a cradled emulator ( after replacing "localhost" with "MACHINE_NAME" ), Internet Explorer on the emulator gives me a "Cannot Connect With Current Settings" error message. This part wasn't part of tutorial but decided so not sure if I am supposed to be able to hit it from my emulator..so I am not sure if the fact that I can't hit it is related to the problem.
AFTER STARTING SQL SERVER AGENTin Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, I killed the application, and after relaunching it, it hits "The Specified table does not exist [Vendor]" error. This time it doesn't even launch first - that is I dont even get to pressing "InitSinc" button. Debugger is showing that this error is hit on the following line in AdvWorksMobile.AddWorksDataSetTableAdapters

int returnValue = this.Adapter.Fill(dataTable);

I am not sure why the errors changed on me after starting SQL Server Agent.
What can I do to fix this connection problem?

Thank you so much for your help!

Package Execution Fails In Windows Service But Runs Fine As A Windows Application.

Jun 23, 2006

I am attempting to write a Windows service that watches a database for uploaded files to import. When a new file is found, the corresponding SSIS package is run from the file system with variables passed through. I started development as a Windows app and copied the functionality to a service.

The app runs fine. The service does not. I get a "Failure" each time a package is executed. Everything is identical behind the scenes with the obvious exceptions that OnStart and OnStop handlers are buttons in the app. I added a script task at the beginning of one of the SSIS packages to notify me that it is even running at all. It doesn't even hit that initial task.

Again, the app will run all packages just fine. The data is imported and the results return as "Success."

The following is the code executing the package. Any help is appreciated. I've been banging my head on this one for a few days now. (Is there a tag to format a code sample?)

Dim pkgLocation As String
Dim pkg As New Package
Dim app As New Application
Dim pkgResults As DTSExecResult

pkgLocation = sPackageFolder & PackageName & ".dtsx"

pkg = app.LoadPackage(pkgLocation, Nothing)

Dim vars As Variables = pkg.Variables

vars("ImportId").Value = ImportId
vars("ProductionServer").Value = ProductionServer
vars("ProductionDatabase").Value = ProductionDatabase
vars("SourceFileName").Value = FileName
vars("SourceFilePath").Value = FilePath

pkgResults = pkg.Execute()

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Has Not Upgraded Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools

Mar 18, 2008

Hi,
I understand from previous threads that installing SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 on the desktop client can speed up the response rate of the Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools.

However after logging on as an administrator and installing Service Pack 2, Service Pack 2 returned no errors. However after launching Visual Studio and clicking on the about dialog box the version reported was still €œRTM.050727-4200€? where I was expecting to see €œSP.050727-7600€?.

I understood that I applied the same service pack to my copy of SQL Server on my laptop and the upgrade worked successfully.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Kieran.

MSSQL 2005 Vs. Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1

Mar 14, 2007

Hi,
for some reason, when I've installed visual studio 2005, I didn't install also SQL server.
Than I've updated VS with Service Pack 1 (thank god, I was trying unsucesfully for about 2 weeks :/ ).

Than I want to install MSSQL 2005 and an error came up:

Message displayed to user
SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use Add or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again. For detailed instructions on uninstalling SQL Server 2005, see the SQL Server 2005 Readme.
SQL Server Setup has detected that the following required component is not installed: Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. To proceed, download and install the Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50380 , and then run SQL Server Setup again.

1. The http link leads to main page of MS Download Centre.
2. I have Installer 3.1. (version of file c:windowssystem32msiexec.exe said so)
3. I really do not have any beta version of any mentioned SW. I never had.

So I think the issue could be, that installer is checking for not updated version of Visual Studio.
(I was searching through net/msdn and seems no one had this problem (maybe wrong keywords, though) ).

I'm running setup.exe from CD1.

Uninstalling of VS Service Pack 1 is not an option. I really don't want to spent another week by installing it.
Please tell that there is some another way :) .
Thanks a lot.

Accessing AS 2005 From ASP.NET Application

Nov 17, 2005

I have an asp.net application. This application provide consolidated information to the user using Analysis Services 2005. Within it, one aspx page uses MDX query to retrieve the information from the cube. However, we are unable to access AS 2005 because of authentication issues. What would be the easier to implement and deploy scenario?
How can I access AS 2005 from an ASP.NET application? Is there any feature to use?

Application Roles In SQL 2005

Jun 13, 2006

We have an an application that was written using OLE DB (ADO) against a SQL 2000 Server that uses an Application role to give rights to the database objects. It connects, calls sp_setapprole and goes on. If the database needs to LOCK a record, it is creating a new ADO Connection and instantiating the Approle again. This model has been working fine up til now.

Now we are installing a SQL 2005 server for the latest version of the product we are working on and are running into an error. The error is
Error: 18059, Severity: 20, State: 1.
The connection has been dropped because the principal that opened it subsequently assumed a new security context, and then tried to reset the connection under its impersonated security context. This scenario is not supported. See "Impersonation Overview" in Books Online.

It's happening when the second ADO Connection for locking a record is being created and the sp_setapprole is being executed.

One of my questions is what is the problem with executing the approle on a different connection? Our code has not changed, so obviously SQL 2005 is doing something different. The other is What can we do to correct this?

Is the resource pooling different? We had problems in the beginning with approles and figured out through research that we needed to add OLE DB Services=-2 to the connection string to turn off resource pooling.

Is there an extra step to using Approles in SQL 2005?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we need to resolve this ASAP.

Thanks,

David
