SQL Express 2005 For Buisiness Critical Database Or Use Full SQL Server?
Jan 27, 2008
We provide hardware and network support to a medical practice with 5 surgeons and 10 admin staff.
They are implementing a new medical practice software package which will hold all their business critical data including financials, patients, medical records etc. This runs on either SQL 2005 express or full SQL server.
The software vendor is proposing using SQL express only as the database will be << 4Gb
We are not application or database skilled and have concerns that the medical practice may not be getting the best advise from the software vendor.
Is SQL express just as robust and safe for critical data as the full SQL server database ? Technical €śgut feel€? is that it can€™t be or MS would not sell many licenses.
Comments would be appreciated. It is hard for us to suggest using a full SQL database unless there is a substantiated reason.

I installed SQL Server 2005 express with advanced services which is supposed to include full-text search capability but I can't get it to work. When I try to create a full-text catalog it gives me an error because it does not think the full-text service is installed or loaded. I can't seem to find a reference to the full-text search feature to enable or install it. any ideas?

Lets say I use the 'enabling roles' for my ASP 2.0 site. This creates a ASPNETDB.DBF SQL Express file.
Later I go to post this to a real web server - which runs the 'full' MS SQL2005 server. What happens to the ASPNETDB.MDF file (or for that matter, any other MDF file I create with SQL Express) when it leaves the Express world and enters the Real world.

Newbie questions.
1. Can SQL Server 20005 Express do full text searches?
2. If not, is there a way to use SQL Server 20005 Express to search a database column containing text data type?
Using Visual Basic 2005 Express, I would like to do a simple search with a search textbox and button that will return the entire contents of a field of database text when one or more words in the search text box are in the field of text in the database.
I have been playing in Visual Basic 2005 Express and using SQL queries (SELECT, FROM, WHERE) to output to DataGridView controls by using ID columns as filters in the query, etc. This I can do. But I have not been able to use a word or phrase in the search textbox as a filtered query to output the entire database field of text which contains the search word or phrase in the search textbox.
Thanks for any help in getting me started with this.

SQL Server 2005 full version is installed on a server computer. I installed MS VS 2005 Express edition on the server. As VS 2005 Express edition can only access to SQL Server 2005 Express edition, so a SQL Server 2005 Express edition has to be installed on the server. I wonder if both SQL Server 2005 full version and Express edition can be installed in the same computer.
Thanks,

I have a basic question to ask:
I have two server both showing SQL server 2005 installed. One of them is a licensed SQL server 2005 and the other is a express edition.
I am trying to find out which one in is express and which is the full licensed version.
I checked at the control pane and they both show up as SQL server 2005. The directory structure at Program Files looks the same.
Please help me.

Hi,
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
Thanks,
Ieyasu

I have upgraded a SBS 2003 MSDE database (instance MSSQL$SHAREPOINT) to SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced Edition. This worked without a problem even when I enabled all the options for the upgrade including Full-text search.
I now want to have Full-text search on this instance of SQL 2005 with database name of STS_EVEREST_1.
I first tried to use the T-SQL command of "CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG BBVisionCatalog AS DEFAULT;"
I now know that the original database was created under SQL 2000 and therefore I needed to use SQL 2000 commands. So I used the following script:
USE STS_EVEREST_1
EXEC sp_fulltext_database 'enable'
EXEC sp_fulltext_catalog 'BBVisionCatalog', 'create';
It produced the following ERROR messages:
(1 row(s) affected)
Msg 7609, Level 17, State 2, Procedure sp_fulltext_database, Line 46
Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be loaded.
I checked to see if the Microsoft Search Service was running. It was running.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

We are a National Level Institutional Stock Broker in India providing trading platform to our Brokers to trade on Exchange nation-wide. We are using Compaq Proliant 8500 Serires computers in clusterd mode having RAM of 1.5 GB on each machine. We are using the Computer-To-Computer-Link (CTCL) solution / application for routing orders of brokers to the Stock Exchange. This application uses the SQL server 7.0 in clustered mode as back-end database on Windows NT Ver 4.0. On daily basis around 20,000 transactions are processed in the database.
Following are the Database Details
----------------------------------
1. Dat Size : 1890 MB
2. Log Size : 838 MB
------------------
Total Size: 2728 MB
3. File growth options: Automated file growth, By percent : 10
4. Maximum File Size : Unrestricted file growth
On April 25, 2001, we found that application was not getting initialize, we (technical team) checked all the procedures, which are getting triggered at that particular time and found all of them were ok, but application did not started.
We also suspected that one of the procedure might have been corrupted, so we re-compiled all procedures which get triggered before starting the application. After havind done so, the application was still not getting initalized / started.
We also executed following commands:
1. DBCC CHECKDB to check inconsistancy, if any but found none (log is available)
2. DUMP TRAN with no_log (To clear transation logs)
We also executed procedures one after the other sequentially, which were being executed before the application starts after binding once again.
After having done this, we also suspected that the problem might have been with "SQL Server 7.0 database engine" and therefore decided to re-start the computers, after which we found that the applicatio started without any hindrance / errors.
This has raised some issues as follows:
1. Has the database corrupted ? If yes, weather it is possible to run DBCC CHECKDB, SQL queries on a corrupted database ?
2. Was there any systems environment failure ?
If so, is it possible to run DBCC CHECKDB, SQL queries on a corrupted
database?
3. Is there any possiblity of Database Engine failure?
What can be the consequeces on Database Engine failure ?
4. Is it possible that Database Engine Failure is the cause for our case ?
Our some of the engineers are of the opinion that the SQL server need to be shutdown and re-started periodically.
1. Will this in any way avoid such re-currance in the future?
2. If this is true, we would like to have your technical feedback as to why this is necessary?
Should you require any further clarification, I shall be glad to furnish it to you in this regard.
I request you to give your techical feed back on an urgent basis as our applications are CRITICAL and needs UTMOST CARE, hence needs consistancy of database.
I shall be glad to receive your feedback at
my e-mail: gchavan@iseindia.com or (+91)(022-781 2389).

Hi. I'm trying to get full-text search working on my SQL 2005 Express with Advanced Services and am having problems. I thought that I installed it correctly, and when I look in the services running, I see it SQL Server Fulltext Search(MSSQLSERVER). Also note that I have SQL Server 2005 Standard installed on this same laptop. I don't know if that Full text Search applies to the Standard, Express or both.
What I do see is that if I connect to the database engine named <mylaptop>, I can see the version is 9.0.1399 and I can see the check box to enable full-text indexing in a particular databases properties. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 1.
However, when I connect to the engine name <mylaptop>SQLExpress, I se the version is 9.0.3042, and I don't see the same check-box to enable full-text indexing. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 0.
I've never tried this before so I know I'm probably missing something basic. But, I have searched quite a bit and not found my answer. So, I'm looking to you for help.
Thanks in advance.
John.

Hi all,
In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.
The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,

I am following the how to in the sql studio management express and for text indexing it says
================================================
To enable a database for full-text indexing
In Object Explorer, expand the server group, right-click the database for which you want to enable full-text indexing, and then select Properties.
Select the Files page, and then select Use full-text indexing
This worked ok
==================================================
next it says to
==================================================
To enable a table for full-text indexing
Expand the server group, expand Databases, expand User Databases, and expand the database that contains the table you want to enable for full-text indexing.
Right-click the table that you want to enable for full-text indexing.
Select Full-Text index, and then click Enable Full-Text indexing.

I have conflicting info about whether SQL 2005 Express contains full-text search and catalogueing functionality. I have read several places online where it is stated that "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services" contains full-text search, but that seems to conflict with the info presented here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx
...for clarification, see my screenshot:

What's the real deal, and why the conficting info?

I have 32-BIT MS SQL 2005 running on Windows 2003 R2 platform. The code is 100% bug-free and works fine on staging and production. Production has an issue AT RANDOM TIMES. Most of the time, it works fine...connections are pooled and reused. Out of nowhere (very randomly), it will start opening new connections for each request and keep doing that until the DB server crashes (could not open connection exception). If I restart IIS, it works fine again...all connections are being reused (no more than 6 connections). Just for fun, I restarted IIS again....it starts opening new connections for each request!! I restarted again, it now reuses existing connections. What's going on??? This has occurred 2 times on our production box. .NET ALSO has a SERIOUS bug where if you nest master pages or user controls, sometimes it will throw a compilation error on a LIVE site (microsoft admits that it's a bug in the engine and currently...there is NO FIX for it..there are patches...none of them work).

I'm using the Full text functionality of SQL 2005 Express Advanced and it works well.
However, the first time a query is run it take 20 seconds or so to actually return the search results. Thereafter, the search results are almost immediate.
That would be fine, except that if no further search is performed for approx 15 minutes or so, then we are back to the first scenario where it takes 20 seconds to return the results.
I assume this means that the full text catalog is not being held in cache at the server? Is there anyway to force it to do this?
My first thoughts were that Full Text within 2005 was an excellent tool, but if the first search always takes a long time then I will have to re-think as I can be sure that customers will get extremely annoyed at the response.
Do you know if there is any way around this or if there are any fixes imminent for this problem.....indeed, is it a problem or am I missing a fundamental setup issue?
What would be the implications if I created a small console application to perform a full text search once every minute at the server to keep the index cached?
many thanks

im having an issue with sql server 2005 express on a test box. in recent testing, ive encountered errors with the database that i havent encountered before. im trying to use an app to add records to some tables in a database, 1 record at a time. but in doing so i get this
"The transaction log for database 'ScanOrder2' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases"
with every insert of a record.
this process was working fine 2 days ago and i cant find anything
thats been changed.
- i deleted the database and tried restoring it from a backup that is
known to work, but still has the issue
- the recovery model is set to simple. every night a batch script is
run to truncate the log file in case there is a transaction that uses
a lot of records
- i can insert and delete records manually with no problems (ie going
in through SSMSE and highlighting a row and deleting it or adding
random data) but i still cant add it through the app
- the log file is set to autogrow unrestricted at 10 megs at a time.
- i even tried setting the log file to 500 megs starting size, and
still couldnt even insert 1 record
- when i check the log_reuse_wait_desc, it says NOTHING, when not
running and while running.
is there any other setting i could be missing that might attribute to
this?

I've used Sql Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003 for a few years. I've started a new position and they have access to Sql Server 2005 Standard and Visual Basic 2005 Express which I'd like to use for a new project. So I installed Sql Server 2005 and then VB 2005 Express on my workstation. I didn't choose the Sql Server option for VB Express because I already had Sql Server 2005 Standard installed with a simple database created. I created a simple vb project that justs connects to the database but I get the following error.
Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I looked at permissions in the database and it looks ok. I'm the db owner and I'm using Windows Auth. My connection string is
"Data Source=MySystem;initial catalog=AdventureWorks;integrated security=true;"
I thought I'd look at the starter kit to get some ideas about what the problem is, but when I started the movie starter kit project, it was upset that I didn't have Sql Server 2005 EXPRESS installed. Yea, but I do have Sql Server 2005 Standard installed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,

Dear all
I am a pretty new in the development world fresh from uni. I am doing development on a system that has a security database. Access to the data in that database is pretty important. So in case the main server where the database is stored for soem reason fails or gets compromised i need to have a second copy with the most recent data in that database and keep the application up and running. The data i have is stored in a SQL 2005 database. What are the recomended aproaches for acheiving this needed reliability?
Would running the SQL Agent every 2 minutes do the trick? And replicate the database to another server and then have asecondary deployment on that server running as a backup? Or are there any other means?
Any advice is apreciated.
