SQL Express Commercial License
Oct 8, 2006
Hello Everyone,
I have been searching hard to get an answer on this question, I hope someone here can help me!
Here is my situation:
I am planning to build a website for them, that would be used for some event registration (by people outside my company). I also plan to use SQL Express Edition as the database backend for the site. Now this is where I have a question, can I use SQL Express and pay nothing? (It is free right?) There would be a maximum of 600 registrations over a period of 1 month. I don't expect more than 50 concurrent users. The administration side of the application would be used by internal employees (So, the application would be used by internal employees and external people). Where can I find more information about the license?
I would be very thankful if someone can guide me on this.

I'm working on a server based ASP.NET app.
I'd also like to deploy it as a single user version.
Rather than rewrite it to .Net windows (at least initially), I'm thinking about having the user install Cassini and SQL Server Express on their machines, and run the app as a "local" web app.
Clearly, there are a lot of issues to consider.
One is whether to even think about using SQL Server Express for this.
So, two questions on that, initially:
Q1) Are there any licensing issues? I would direct the user to download directly from MS.
Q2) What would it take to get SQL Server Express and the application to start talking to each other once SQL, Cassini and the application files were installed?
> I'm assuming I would have to build "data base initiation" and "file create" procedures, etc., but what about just having the App find SQL, start it, and get it configured, etc for use. How hard would it be to proceduralize this so that it would look to the user like a "standard" application software installation procedure?
Any guidance on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Does anyone know if it is legal to use SQL Server 2005 Express in a commercial website? There is no need for SQL Server 2005 so the Express would do the job great.Thx, Viktor

Hi,
I wonder is SQL express free to "hobby developer" or to "anyone".... I am thinking to install a SQL express edition on my client's computer, and install our software on my client's other computers, the software will remote connect to the SQL express server.
Is it *legal* to do so? if it is legal, then who would pay for a copy of SQL full-version 2005 ?
Many thanks

I'm a .net developer creating applications that depends on SQL Server as a back end database engine.
I read about the features and pricing options of the different SQL Server 2005 editions here, I also read the SQL Server 2005 express EULA and knew that it's now alright to use it in commercial applications.
I use the SQL Server express engine only for the purpose of development and testing, is this use is lawful?
And if the answer is yes, what's the need for the "Developer Edition" mentioned in the page referenced above?

I have a VERY Legitmate use to install sql 4 workgroups on a pc without licensing it. I am making a disk image for MANY pcs to be imaged and load licensing after the imaging is completed.
I have been able to do this with Windows XP Professional, MS Office 2003 and a couple non-Ms programs. The information for MS software even came from their KB, so I know what I am doing is legit. I just can't find any information on doing this for my sql app.
Any suggestions??

Currently, i am planning to develop a small system for my client by using SQL database. However, i am not sure is it legal to use SQL Express 2005 in this project? I mean setup the SQL Express 2005 in their server then my application will access this database. Is it legal? or Do i need to purchase any license in order to do that? or I need to purchase a SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise version?

I am working to develop an application using dotnet framework 2.0 that requires loading tab delimited text file (generated on each user action) in to table of SQL Express database. I am thinking to use SSIS library (Managed DTS) to call my SSIS package from within my application to load this data on each user transaction. This should be noted that I am not hosting my packages in to SQL Express.
Microsoft allows redistribution of SQL Express for free. Do I need any SQL Server or any other type of license for using SSIS library from my application?

I have developed some custom SQL reports that query a major software vendor's SQL Database, and I would like to sell them commercially.
The only problem is that I dont know how to protect them from casual piracy? Ideally I would like to tie them into a uniqueness of the database server eg the machine SID or similar but have no experience of this..
Can anyone recommend a way of commercially protecting the code pleaaaase?
Thanks!

To all,
Can anyone give me the answer?
I want to use DTS to import some data from remote server to my local server.
Every time I get following error message "The license for the installation of Microsoft SQL Server on your source and destination connections does not permit the use DTS to transfer data".
Both my servers are on SP2. Why I have such error? What should I do?
Thanks.

Hello all,
I need to pick up a SQL Server 7 license, but I am a little confused as to what I need.
I'll be running SQL Server 7 on a web server. I'll be the only one logging to maintain SQL Server. There will be three different apps the run on the server that each will have one to ten databases.
So, what's the minimum license I need? Will the developer's license work?
Any one out there have a license they want to sell - cheap? :)
Thanks....

How do you increase the number of license? With 6.5 we were able to do this through the setup on the CD but it will not let me do this with 7.0? The specific error is SQL Server Error 18460. Logon Failed. The maximum simultaneous user count of 5 license s for this Standard Edition server has been exceeded. I have upgraded the licenses in the License manager for Windows NT but SQL 7.0 does not seem to recognize it.
