SQL Express Query Timeout Error On Stored Procedures
Dec 12, 2007
I've been researching this problem for weeks and I haven't gotten very far with it so I was hoping to get some help here.
Here's the error information we get:
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
This particular error comes from a .net application, but we've seen similar "query timeout errors" from a vb6 application roughly 6 months ago.
Here are the facts we've narrowed down:
1) The timeout happens at seemingly random times (very sporadic).
2) It's currently only happening on a few stored procedures (if requested, I'll provide one of the stored procedures, but it's basically a complex search procedure).
3) To resolve the timeout error, we've found 2 temporary solutions:
A) have all clients exit the program thus closing all active connections (less than 10 connection in a 4-5 user setup)
B) I run the following script when the timeout occurs and then the stored procedure runs smoothly:
Code Block
sp_configure 'remote query timeout', 0
reconfigure with override
sp_configure 'remote query timeout', 600
reconfigure with override
4) Running the stored procedure from our application and from SQL Management studio express, is the same, except management studio doesn't time out and actually runs as long as it takes (roughly 1 minute 20 seconds or under 1 second after the script above runs).
We're pretty stumpted and it's happened at 5 different client sites with little in common. One of our sites is even running SQL express off the workstation with nothing else running and it still occurs.
I'm open to trying practically anything at this point, but unfortuntenly we have not been able to reproduce this behavior in our testing enviroment so I can't give much information for others to reproduce.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
is there a way to set timeout in a stored procedure?? I'm running a stored procedure but 10% of the time it will time out and when I say retry it works just fine. I'm wondering if I set the timeout large enough it won't run into that error.
I'd like to know what would be the best way to avoid it AND how to set timeout in stored procedures..
thanks guys!!

Hi all,
This is a problem for that I lost a weekend to reach to this conclusions:
Here is the scenario:
I need a file downloaded from a FTP server on my SQL 2005 DB Server to process it in several ways. This file is tens of MBs (let's say 50MB). I set up a CLR stored procedure to bring it locally on the machine.
Inside this procedure, call it getFtpFile, I use the FtpWebRequest to issue the commands I need to the FTP server (get the file size and download the file). For reading and writing I use a StreamReader sr and a StreamWriter. sw
I read the remote file in block with:
sr.ReadBlock(buf, 0, blockSizeBytes);
Everything work file until the last block that, most probably will not be of size blockSizeBytes, but smaller. So, what happens is that when I read this last block there is an exception raised from the call saying:
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive.
This happens only if:
-> the code runs inside SQL (calling the SP) (it runs perfect on normal tet environment where I have another executable and call the getFtpFile method in the CLR dll);
-> 100 seconds (100000 miliseconds) (exactly) have passed (small files do not experiencing this problem)
I thought the reader writer scheme is not perfect and implemented again with a simple FileStream.WriteByte(response.GetResponseStream().Read());
This approach, even if very slow, still has the problem after 100 seconds, in a CLR SQL environment, when it reads the at the last character.
I have used all the combinations of KeepAlive and response.Closose(). Problems still there.
Conclusion: There must be a 100 seconds timeout that immediately after my last byte has been received, closes the connection and the stream of the response crashes during this last call.
Thank you all for the help!

I get the following error message:
SQL Exectution error,
Exectuted SQL statement: SELECT...
Source: .Net SqlClient data provider
Message: Timeout expired, timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation...
The view is operating on a table of ~250,000 records. The timeout occurs after 45 seconds, and none of the changes I make to the various timeout settings in the server or database seem to affect this.
When I execute the same sql statement in a query window it does complete, requiring about 7 minutes to execute.
How can I configure the view not to timeout when executing this query?

I have a database in SQL server 2000 that I added the aspnet user/membership schema to using the aspnet_regsql.exeaspnet_regsql.exe program. I have added a few stored procedures for the Visual Studio 2005 web app. I would like to convert the database to SQL 2005 Express. Is there an upgrade utility that helps with this? I found that I could use the DTS export tool in 2000 SQL Enterprise Manager to move the tables, including the aspnet tables. However there are alot of stored procedures that are in the SQL 2000 database that are not in the 2005 version. Is there a way to migrate stored procedures to SQL 2005 Express? I do have the EXPRESS Management Studio, but am not too familiar with it.

Is it possible to create and use stored procedures in SQL 2005 Express? As noted by someone else in an earlier post, you can right-click the stored procedures folder, get a template, code a stored procedure, and save it to a project file. However, whereas the earlier thread suggested that one could save the sp to the database by clicking !Execute, this does not work for me and I can find no other obvious way to make the sp accessible to my code-behind procs. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Have sql 2005 express installed.
Running a database for a DotNet Nuke site
Opened Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Navigated to CASPORTALDatabasesDotNetNukeProgrammabilityStored Proceduresdbo.AddUser
Right clicked dbo.AddUser and selected "modify"
This allowed me to paste the additional code into the right hand window/pane, however when I try and save this it wants to save it a seperate file /query. Is there something I don't understand?
am I not able to edit the original stored procedure?

Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB multiple times. One of my SP is:SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived, I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, S.Name AS 'StatusName', S.ItemDetailStatusID, S.InProgress as 'StatusInProgress', S.Color AS 'StatusColor',T.[Name] AS 'TypeName', T.Prefix, T.Name AS 'ItemDetailTypeName', T.ItemDetailTypeID FROM [Item].ItemDetails I INNER JOIN Item.ItemDetailStatus S ON I.ItemDetailStatusID = S.ItemDetailStatusID INNER JOIN [Item].ItemDetailTypes T ON I.ItemDetailTypeID = T.ItemDetailTypeID However, I already have StoredProcedures that return the exact same data from the ItemDetailStatus table and ItemDetailTypes table.Would it be better to do it above, and have more code to change when a new column/field is added, or more checks, or do something like:(This is not propper SQL) SELECT I.ItemDetailID, I.ItemDetailStatusID, I.ItemDetailTypeID, I.Archived, I.Expired, I.ExpireDate, I.Deleted, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailStatusInfo I.ItemDetailStatusID, EXEC [Item].ItemDetailTypeInfo I.ItemDetailTypeID FROM [Item].ItemDetails IOr something like that... Any thoughts?

I have created a stored procedure which searches one or more requests (request is a table) according to the given parameters and returns Rows from Request table. I have used Full Text Search function i.e. Contains() in this Query. I have problem with Full Text search, when user first time executes query with Contains() function it works fine and continues working fine for 10 to 15 times or more executions. But after some searches the system starts saying Timeout Error. The very strange situation is that the application is developed in Visual Basic and if we run stored procedure through Visual Basic it says Time Out but at the same time when we run the same stored procedure with same parameters from SQL Server Management Studio, it runs immediately and takes no time in execution. Also I have tested the Stored procedure without the Contains function and in this case it works fine. It only hangs when we search for more than 10 or 15 times.
Does anyone know what is the problem here?, i am posting here my code too,

Hello,
I am researching alternatives to a stored procedure that uses a linked server query that my ASP page uses to retrieve records to the page.
Should I:
Use replication (Data is constantly updated, so a snapshot won't do. Merge replication?)
Break up the stored procedure into subqueries?
Use a view on the remote server instead of the actual tables?
I am trying to reduce the amount of table scans, what is the best way to do this?
Here is the stored procedure I am trying to tune:
(@startDate and @endDate are parameters passed from the web page):
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spELRMCcardXtionByDate @dcid nvarchar(255), @startDate datetime, @endDate datetime
AS
SELECT Store.[Str#], Store.[Dcid#], E.card_number, E.program_number
, E.start_date, E.end_date, E.card_number, E.event_number
, E.status, E.budget, E.scheduled_date, P.tx_time, P.purchase_amount
, L.merchant_name
FROM (Store INNER JOIN Event E ON Store.[DemoID#] = E.event_number)
LEFT JOIN (Location L RIGHT JOIN POS_TX P ON L.location_number = P.location_number)
ON E.event_number = P.event_number
WHERE (((Store.[Dcid#])= @dcid)) AND E.scheduled_date BETWEEN @startDate AND @endDate
ORDER BY Store.[Str#]
GO
Any suggestions on my sp or anything else that can implement would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
I have the same question and error that Chopaka is getting:
"I have a SQL 2005 job that calls a stored proc. The job step returns the message "Query timeout expired....Message 7412...The step succeeded." The proc never actually ever did anything due to the query timeout, and the job continued on to other steps. I'm going to address the timeout issue eventually, but first I'd like to trap the timeout problem and force the job to end.
It appears that the query timeout isn't really an error, just a message. I've tried TRY-CATCH in the SP but the situation isn't caught, again probably due to the interpretation that it isn't an error."
I have reduced the "Remote Query time out" to 1 sec, in order to catch the error and to prevent the job from running, but the error is not caught.
Is there a way to catch this in the SQL or in the job step to prevent the job from continuing?
This is the script that I'm using without any luck
BEGIN TRY
BEGIN Transaction
Create table #tmpSummaryTable
(
)
insert into #tmpSummaryTable
select * from CDRServer01.iXtemp.dbo.gx_tbFTRSummary_test
COMMIT Transaction
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
DECLARE @err int
SELECT @err = @@error
PRINT '@@error: ' + ltrim(str(@err))
SELECT ERROR_NUMBER() ERNumber,
ERROR_MESSAGE() Error_Message

Return

I was wondering if anyone knows how to suppress error messages that get returned from a stored procedure. For example, in a stored procedure I have a convert statement that takes some dates and substrings them together into a new date format:
select convert(datetime(substring(col1,1,2)+ '/' +.......etc.
Some of the data I am working with is not guaranteed to be good. For example, sometimes the users had entered 2/2/97 - which is invalid - no leap year in 1997. So, the convert to datetime fails.
The typical error message about the convert pops up on the screen. Can I shut that off.....and still catch @@error <> 0....?
Thanks!

Can someone please confirm, wether it is possible to execute a stored procedure in a sybase/or any other database from within an open query function in a SQL 7 database.
I know that we can execute a dynamic SQL statement, what about a stored procedure in the linked server. Can we execute that with parameters??

Hi,
I am running a stored procedure that collects some records from two tables do some calculations with those records and insert those calculation result in a temp. table. I am calling this stored procedure in my aspx page and then later select all the records from temp table and show it in a table.
When I run this application on browser it give me Timeout expired error but whn I execute the stored procedure it runs properly but takes around 3:10 mins to execute in query analyzer. I did some google work and based on that I specified CommandTimeout = 300 for SP and Connection timeout=400 in web.config. But still it didnt worked. Sometimes it runs properly but sometimes its not.
Where I am doing mistake? and Wht should i do to resolve this? Plz. help.
Thanks in adv.

Hello,I was wondering if there were any built-in objects to handle error handling, in any of the SQL Server objects, or just to use event log or trace or debug or something like that. Or is it not recommended at all to use try.. catch, for whatever reason. Thanks a lot.

Hello,
The export menu in DTS is a bit confusing for me. I have some stored procedures in one SQL Server and want to copy them to another. The username is the same for both SQL Servers. When I try copying the stored procedure with defaul settings, I get a progress bar (24 percent ccompleted, 62 percent completed...), then when its done it says "failed to copy objects from sql server to sql server". When I double click the error for details it says "User or role '[username]' already exists in the current database". Then I try again, unchecking "use default options" for my export. I go in to alter the options, uncheck "copy database users and database groups" (I've also tried unchecking "copy object-level permissions"), run it, get progress bar (like above), and then get another error that says "There is no such user or group '[username]'".
My user name is correct, I am able to access both Sql Servers with this username, and I should have all of the appropriate permissions.
I think maybe there is a checkbox I'm not unchecking or something stupid like that.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I am trying to pull information about all the user created stored procedures in a database with a query. I have successfully pulled all the procs with parameters, but I want to result set to also contain the stored procedures without parameters. I can't quite get it. Any help would be appreciated:
SELECT procs.name as ProcName,
params.name as ParameterName,
types.name as ParamType,
params.max_length,
params.precision,
params.scale,
params.is_output
FROM sys.procedures procs
LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.all_parameters params
ON procs.object_id = params.object_id
LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.types types
ON params.system_type_id = types.system_type_id
WHERE params.user_type_id = types.user_type_id
AND procs.is_ms_shipped = 0
ORDER BY procname,
params.parameter_id

Hi All!
I know this must be a very silly question but, what is the PLSQL string I have to use to delete a stored procedure in a database? Essentially I have to remove a stored procedure that comes from a database backup every night because it belongs to a user and that user has to be recreated in the new SQL Server 2000. Simply put:
1. Production database comes into test database
2. Remove copy of stored procedure since it can not be set to dbo user because there is another copy with the same name that belongs to dbo.
3. Remove user
4. Add user (this one brings login name since the restored one didn't)
5. Have a nice day
I've got everything except removing the stored procedure so I will really appreciate the help.
Thank you all!

Hello,
I was in a confusion that is Stored Procedures are really fast ? I have a .NET application where I am using Stored Procedures. But recently I cam through this link http://weblogs.asp.net/fbouma/archive/2003/11/18/38178.aspx which describes Stored Procedures are bad and it won't give any performance difference. What is the truth ? Will it give good performance that passing query from the application ?
Please make it clear
