SQL Express Errors: Diagram Component, Startup Error

Dec 28, 2005

Problem 1: Upon starting SQL Server Express I get the following error:

"An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application....Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent." Clicking OK lets the Server continue and I can use it quasi-normally.

Problem 2: Also, when I try to generate a diagram, I get a message that states

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner.  To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects."

But, the database HAS an owner, and resetting the owner (using the Files...) to other users has no effect.

Problem 3: I tried to change the name of a database, and it refused to do so. Except that now all objects under the database name (it is the same old name) have disappeared. Is there a magic folder somewhere that contains all of the tables, etc. that were 'banished' from the server?

Is there a way to detach the databases from Express and reattach them to the SQL Server 2000 I am also running? Last time I tried the 'detach' worked but all the objects were wiped out by the 'attach'. Handy feature.

Thanks

Glen

SQL Express Startup Woes

Apr 26, 2006

I'm not familiar with SQL Server and am just starting things up. I have VB Express and SQL Server Express (I think - at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't), and am trying to create a database.

So how do I do that?

All I see that relates to the SQL Server 2005 is under All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools; I have a configuration manager, Error and Usage Reporting, and Surface Area Configuration. I assumed that in there would be a database engine in here somewhere, but I have rumaged through every command in these and found nothing on creating a new database. Nada.

Am I looking in the wrong places, did something go wrong with my install, or am I just a complete leptic?

Please Help!

Server Startup / 100 % Cpu Utilization While Recovering Database @ Startup

Dec 7, 2000

database : MS SQL server ver 6.50.201
problem: server startup / server time out
details
SQL server shows usage of 100 % CPU utilization, if started automatically / manually. and does not proceed / hangs up(server time out), but win nt operates extremely slow.

The background of the situation in brief is as stated below.
The errorlog was found to have the messages
warning : OPEN OBJECTS parameter may be too low.
Attempt was made to free up descriptors in localdes()
Run sp_configure to increase parameter value.

Error : 644, severity : 21, state; state 1
the non clustered leaf row entry for page 2 row 1 was not found in index page 40 indexid 2 database 'tempdb'

Error : 2620 severity 21 state 3

Action taken
I used the sp_option to increase the open objects from default 500 to 1000, and the LE threshold maximum value to 400 from the default 200.
after which I used reconfigure go and restarted the computer to take the effect. The following did work fine and server was working ok. But then from yesterday I am having the problem that the MS SQL sever is utilizing the cpu to 98 - 99 % and I am not able to connect to the server.
I tried to start the server with the minimal configuration by specifying the -f option in the service manager start up options, it showed the following message
00/12/07 10:40:49.73 ods Unable to connect. The maximum number of '5' configured user connections are already connected. System Administrator can configure to a higher value with sp_configure.
00/12/07 10:40:50.02 ods Unable to connect. The maximum number of '5' configured user connections are already connected. System Administrator can configure to a higher value with sp_configure.

afterwhich I tried with the option of starting the sql server with the option -c -f
which in the event detail of the win nt shows
"mesg 18109: Recovery dbid 6 ckpt(55813,8) oldest tras= (55813,0)"

The open procedure for service "MSSQLServer" in DLL "SQLCTR60.DLL" has taken longer than the established wait time to complete. The wait time in milliseconds is shown in the data.

and in the errorlog present in MSSQLLOG directory

The dbid is / was 6 for both the instances, the database which is having this dbid is database name "AM" and is having above 1300 tables (approx)
what could be the problem and solution for it?
kindly help me out of this situation.

SQL Service Management Studio Express (x64) Crashing On Startup

Mar 20, 2007

hopefully, the subject addresses my problem. the server is running like a charm.

Service pack 2 has been installed. The only connection I remember creating after the initial installation is a remote connection.

I've checked to make sure I am allowing multiple protocols.

I am not able to get a response from the following:

C:Usersamfrizzell>SQLCmd -S .aaron-toshiba -E -Q "SELECT @@Version"
HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1
SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

The instance is running as I can connect to it through Visual Studio 2005.

What did I do wrong? I could really use this application in order for me to develop websites. It's sort of a pain to go to another computer to use the more powerful features of SQL Server 2005 Server management Studio (standard edition).

Help me... somebody please help me.

Thanks.

Errors Opening ADO Connections Using COM+ Component

Mar 19, 2008

Hello,

We have a strange problem occurring in an environment at a remote client that we're looking into. I was wondering if anybody else has experienced something similar.

We have a COM+ transactional component sitting on a machine that connects to a SQL server machine in the same room (ie no firewall between the two as far as I know, but I'll double check that to make sure).

This component was written in Delphi and uses ADO (sqloledb provider) to connect to the SQL Server. This works 99% of the time. However, there are times where we get the following error when trying to open connection (using the Connection ADO interface):

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).]General network error. Check your network documentation

or this:

Connection failure

The error codes associated with these were found in oledb.pas :(-2147467259) $8004D01C and (-2147168228) $80004005

When this happens, it seems to last a few seconds (usually around 10) and then everything comes back to normal. I'm just wondering what could make this happen when the SQL Server seems to be responsive when we try to connect to it using other means. The SQL machine runs Win2k3 sp2 for testing purposes.

Since we were not able to reproduce it yet, I wrote a little application trying to connect to a sql server when it is set on pause. When I run it inside a COM+ transaction, I get the same errors as above right away, the third time I'll get an error telling me that SQL is in pause state, If I run the exact same code but inside a simple vbs application (ie no COM+ transaction), I only get the pause error message sometimes after a few more seconds, and none of the other errors above. Could it be that the COM+ transaction is trying to do other things and these fail so it returns another error? If so, how come after a bit I get the proper message?

Anyways, I'm pretty lost as to why this is happening and how we can try to debug it since we have not been able to reproduce it yet. If anybody has any clues, please let me know.

Many thanks,

Greg

Not Able To Create A DB Diagram In SQL Server 2005. No Menu Option For Creating A DB Diagram??

They are:"Working with SQL Server diagrams" and "Refresh"There is no menu choice to create a new database diagram. Can anyone tell me what the problem here is?

To create a new database diagramIn Object Explorer, right-click the Database Diagrams folder or any diagram in that folder.
Choose New Database Diagram on the shortcut menu.
The Add Table dialog box appears.
Select the required tables in the Tables list and click Add.

SQL Executive - Service Startup Account Error

Aug 5, 1998

Hello all,

I just inherited a SQL Server that was set up by a non-DBA. It`s running NT 4.0 and SQL Server 6.50 - 6.50.201 (the vendor hasn`t certified the product on SP4). I am trying to change the SQL Executive Service to use a non-system logon account. The account that I want to use is running SQL Executive on 9 other servers.

I went into Usrmgr and added the account to the administrators group. Made sure that it has rights to:
log on as a service, log on as a batch job, increase quotas, act as part of the operating system, replace a process level token.

When I try to change to that id in services, I get the following error:

"cannot set the startup parameters for SQL Executive service. Error 1057 occurred. The account name is invalid or does not exist."

Looking in Technet, I found that if "log on as a service" isn`t set you could get this message but I`ve check/re-checked, had someone else check and it`s set.

Any help would be appreciated!

What does this mean?

What would cause this to happen?

How do I resolve the problem?

Try Catch Doesn't Catch Errors Inside A Data Flow Transformation Script Component

Feb 15, 2007

Hi,

I'm having trouble with a Script Component in a data flow task. I have code that does a SqlCommand.ExecuteReader() call that throws an 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' error. Thing is, the SqlCommand.ExecuteReader() call is already inside a Try..Catch block. Essentially I have two questions regarding this error:

a) Why doesn't my Catch block catch the exception?
b) I've made sure that my SqlCommand object and the SqlConnection property that it uses are properly instantiated, and the query is correct. Any ideas on why it is throwing that exception?

Hope someone could help.

I tried changing the database Owner to "sa". But, still the same error. Interestingly, other databases that are already having the database diagrams (created by others), are allowing me to create new diagrams in those databases. The only difference is, I created this database where I'm trying to create diagrams on. How do I get this working.

For example:
I have 2 tables, tbl1 and tbl2.

tbl1 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}

tbl2 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}
tbl1_id {uniqueidentifier} as FK linked to tbl1.id

If I drag and drop the tbl1.id column to tbl2 I end up with a one-to-many relationship. How do I create a one-to-one relationship instead?

Express Errors On Install

Jun 29, 2007

I can't get the download to work...i've tried regular sql server express 2005, the express for sp2 and the express with advanced services.  I keep getting this message after the native client and support files are installed.."This application has failed to start because XOLEHLP.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."Then right after that message is says... "Failed to load SQLSpars.dll"

Error: The ProcessInput Method On Component OLE DB Destination (513) Failed With Error Code 0xC0202009

Mar 22, 2007

I'm trying to create a simple Data transfermation. I have a flat file that came of a unix server.. it's 177 bytes wide.. thought it was 175, but when I created the flat file connector, I could see some extra characters on the end.

My output is going to be an excel spreadsheet, I only want two columns from the input. I created an oledb jet 4.0 connection. and followed instructions from here :

http://aspalliance.com/889_Extracting_Data_from_a_Flat_File_with_SQL_Server_2005_Integration_Services

to create my datafow.

On my first attempt to dataflow, I ran into unicode errors and had to do this:

ran into a problem with unicode errors. went to the source for the flat file. for the output column in question changed to Unicode string [DT_WSTR].

When I run , here are the errors I get:

[OLE DB Destination [513]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E09. [DTS.Pipeline]

Error: The ProcessInput method on component "OLE DB Destination" (513) failed with error code 0xC0202009. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0202009.

[GanchoFileSource [1]] Information: The total number of data rows processed for file "\ammia01dev04D$JCPcpmgancho_venta_20070321.sal" is 19036.

[GanchoFileSource [1]] Error: Setting the end of rowset for the buffer failed with error code 0xC0047020.

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "GanchoFileSource" (1) returned error code 0xC0209017. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.

[ActiveX Script Task] Error: Retrieving The File Name For A Component Failed With Error Code 0x001B6438.

Jul 28, 2006

This error occurs when the ActiveX task tries to execute:

[ActiveX Script Task] Error: Retrieving the file name for a component failed with error code 0x001B6438.

Anybody know how to troubleshoot these errors? I can't find anything on this error code. The same script works in DTS.
