SQL Express On Vista - No Security Access.
Jan 17, 2008
I installed SQLE 2005 on vista home prem, and when I go to the studio and attempt to create a database, I get the message below. I am running under an admin account, but the system sees me as a standard user.
Do I need to re-install and tell the system to allow me to log on via. an ID/PW?
Is there a vista patch?
Should I re-install XP?
Also, not having this issue with the same SQLE version and an XP machine.
Thanks

Hi,
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 express with SP2 on Vista Business - as a requirement for a new software package. The installation fails at the point of installing performance counters - the errors are below. I have been unable to find any support entry for this error: I am using the local administrator account - I am a home user and not part of a domain. I have also tried with UAC disabled.

Is there a way to implement Access-like password protection on a SQL Server Express dataset?
The database will be deployed on individual's PCs with no centralization of control. I want to restrict users from being able to see table definitions, stored procedures, etc. Access-like password protection is what I want, but I don't see any similar feature within SQL Server Express. Am I missing something?

I have Sql Server Express installed on Vista (service pack 2)
I have Visual Studio 2005 with an application that I'm trying to access it with within a WCF service.
The login ID of the service is added to the database.
The database has remote access turned on.
The ID is granted access to all databases within the server.
The thread is being set with WindowsProvider and the services set their thread to WindowsProvider.
The dataserver is set with using Windows Authentication for security.
When I open my connection to the database, though, it reports the typically useless message that the connection is not allowed and that the server may not allow remote connections.
How to I get past this? I've done everything right.

I just installed SQL Server 2000 MSDE on a new PC with VISTA Business Edition. The SQL Server service is running, however the SQL Server Agent will not start. I get a message saying "error 5 Access is denied". I am currently using an admin account. Also, I cannot access the an SQL Server database using an Access Project *.adp. When I do the File/Connection within Access 2003 it says that the SQL Server is not found. I was able to access the SQL Server using the IIS and an ODBC after creating a new user.
I have done all this before using XP and no problem.

I am trying to connect to an SQL database with a Java program compiled in NetBeans IDE. I have copied the proper .dll in the auth folder to the same folder as the .jar file required. I have tried a lot of things for a lot of hours, and am still coming up with the message "Driver is not configured for integrated security and "could not load the xxxxx.dll
Has anyone come up with a solution or a workaround to this problem. Please help. I have read the documentation until I am blue in the face. Please only respond if you have a 64 bit machine.
Thanks, Frank

I am trying to load a
project under VS2005 under Windows Vista that references an ADOX
wrapper that is looking for version 2.8.0.0. The reference fails
because the library is not registered.
I thought maybe
installing MDAC 2.8 would solve my problems, but when I run the
installer for that, it briefly puts up a dialog that it is extracting
files, then it disappears.
Anyone have any ideas?

We have an application (.Net 2.0) which installs SQL database.
It installs database sucessfully but when I try to connect the databse using other components of the application,
it fails to connect the database.
Everything works fine if I login as username:"Administrator". or UAC off.
I know in vista when UAC on memeber of admin is considered as standard user.
I got solution to add user in sysadmin role.

It is per user settings. We want some integrated solution. So our customers wouldn't need to do per user settings.
This is urgent. please help...

I am trying to import an Excel 2007 file into SQL Server 2005 Express using linked servers. My linked server was created without error as follows:
Linked server: XLWorkbook
Provider: Microsoft Office 12.0 Access Database Engine OLE DB Provider
Product Name: Excel
Data source: D:spreadsheet.xlsx (D: is on the same PC as the SQL Server)
Provider string: Excel 12.0
However, when I tried to import using
select * from OPENQUERY(XLWorkbook, 'Select * From [Sheet1$]')
I get:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "XLWorkbook" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "XLWorkbook".
I had previously used the same exact query for Excel 2003 on Windows XP and it worked fine without me having to do anything else like doling out access rights.
What do I have to do to get this to work on Windows Vista (and Office 2007)?
Thanks

I have just installed Vista on one of my home network pcs. I also installed Outlook 2005 with Business Contact Manager. It installs an instance of SQL Server Express.
I have created another database on this engine that I need to access from other PCs on my network.
The server address is PCNAMEMSSMLBIZ and I can access the data the database using this name from the the Vista PC (PCNAME).
When I try to acess the database using the same credentials (server, database, username (sa) and password) from an XP PC on the network - it times out and returns an error . My guess is that it is not seeing the database service at all.
I have SQL Server Management Studio installed on the Vista PC and have full access to the instance.
Server authentication is set for SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.
Can anyone help me?. I need to access the SQL Server from the XP PC.

Actually I should have said #22 but this is beyond the point. It seems the errors pop up and then go away for no reason, then appear again.
I had Sql Server Express with Advanced Features set up all right as far as I can see. It is the connection issue that is causing the headache.
Currently when I try to make a connection with an Sql database I get an error in Visual Studio:
Generating user instance in Sql Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances.
So I go to Sql Server, log in, open a new query and type:
sp_configure 'user instances enabled'
GO
I get a table where I can see that
name minimum maximum config_value run_value
user instances enabled 0 1 1 1
Are they enabled? I think, yes. I go back to Vsisual Studio and get the same error. It is possible that I will have to log out in order for all this security garbage to take effect and I will try it but in the meantime, how can I set more than one instance.
I want to complain that these new security provisions that came apparently with SP2 and Vista are totally unnesessary for my applications. I do not have any high security info to worry about, e.g. social security numbers, etc. I would not mind to turn all this stuff off if it is possible at all.
So, how can I set up 3 user instances?
Thanks.

I am developing a web site in asp.net 2.0 using visual studio 2005 and SQL express.
I tried to add a new Sql database using right click on the App_Data folder and adding the DB.
I get an error that the VS could not find a sql Express installed.
I want to clarify that I have installed the SQL express SP2 for vista version and that I can connect to SQL express db using management studio.
I think it is a vista issue probably that UA.
What can I do?
pls do not recommend the next step I already tried itL
If I create the DB on XP and transfer the project to my vista machine the db is there but I cannot connect to it.

SQL Express CTP 2 provides a checkbox that will enrol the user installing the software as a database administrator. If the user fails to check this box, they run as an ordinary user, and hence are not allowed to perform functions such as create database.
In the process of deploying an application via ClickOnce, if SQL Express is not present it will be installed automatically. Also, in the process of deploying a ClickOnce application, we should usually expect to need to create a new database. Currently, if the user takes the default install of SQL Express they will not be a database administrator and will not be able to create the database. The installation will thus fail.
Is anything being done with SQL Express for ClickOnce applications deploying to Vista that will allow us to automatically enrol the user installing SQL Express as a database administrator?

I'm trying to set up a user DSN for a MS Access database in Vista. In XP it's usually just a case of going to Admin Tools > Data Sources but I only get the option of SQL Server and SQL Native Client with Vista.
I'm pretty sure I found a way of doing it a while ago by opening another version of Data Sources from the command prompt but can't for the life of me remember what it was.
Anyone know how to do this?

I am migrating my development environment from XP Pro to Vista, and my website is now serving up the following error:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Disk or network error.
The code in question is as follows:
set dbConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
szPath=Server.MapPath("../../../")
szProvider="Driver=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); DBQ=" & szPath
szProvider=szProvider & "database" & szDir & "" & szDB & ".mdb;"
if bDebug then fpDebug.WriteLine("szProvider: " & szProvider)
dbConn.Open szProvider
The error happens on the last line where I try to open the connection. I've tried also using a dbConn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" line, to no avail. The item that is passed to the Open command is
Driver=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); DBQ=C:obstuffdatabasedemoHMGA.mdb;
I'm not familiar enough with DNS and IIS to figure this out. Any suggestions -- other than porting over to SQL and .NET? You don't buy a Ferrari when you only drive in a 30 MPH town.

Hello,
I am looking for a solution to the problem named Table was skipped, or export failed. Here's the story:
I have a desktop with Vista Ultimate x64 and Office 2007. I want to export a database from Access MDB (about 2Gb, 110 tables) to SQL Server Express Express (Advanced). The simple solution > upsize wizard.
- create new database
- server name, used trusted connection, some database name
- I select all tables
- I unselect table's attributes
- create new Access server/client application
and every time I have Table was skipped, or export failed. The same thing happens when I create new MDB with one table (some random values)!
The strange thing that on laptop with XP + SQL Sever 2005 Express (Simple) and Access XP upsizing the same database works fine!'
one other issues of a rookie:
I wanted to access a database (randomly created) on Vista with the Access on my laptop. Both PCs are in the same network I can ping both, but when I try to connect to IP_desktopSQLEXPRESS Access posts connection error. Why?
P.S.
When installing SQL Server on Vista I have only a problem with IIS and ASP.NET, but it shouldn't be a problem.

“Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
I have tried most of the tips on the net already including changing SQLEXPRESS Built-in account to Local System instead of Network Service, running as a administrator and going into surface area to add new admin and adding priveledges to my account. None of these have helped.
I can create a database in the management studio but can't create it in vwd and also the asp.net applications doesn't run either. can anyone help as i have no idea what to do.

I'm having issues talking to Vista Sql Express, but selectivly.
The following diagram shows you what works, and what doesn't :
http://www.craznar.com/junk/sqlissue.png
As you can see, the Vista/Express server is running - has all the required connectivity enabled, however we cannot talk from the Windows Server 2003 SQL to the Vista SQL.
The error that is given suggests issues with remote access enabling on Vista - but this is working alsoVista's firewall turned off (We can connect to it).
All machines are on the same subnet, behind the same firewall - Neptune and Headoffice are on a domain, Neptune points to Headoffice for DNS, Headoffice forwards DNS requests to the same DNS all other machines use.
File sharing and Ping work from Headoffice to Neptune ... just can't get SQL connection to work.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Greetings!
I tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express on my VISTA Beta 2 Box but before doing so, I checked if IIS is already installed and running. During the assesment of my current configuration, SQL Server 2005 Express is still looking for IIS. Are the conflicts regarding IIS 7.0 to SQL Server Express or the feature is not yet available. I will be continuing to do experiments with this one and hope there will be people who can share their experiences too.
Thanks!

We are in the process of converting our MSDE-enabled products to using SQL Express for compatability with Vista. With help from the msdn article at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx I've been able to create a test install that works fine under XP, but fails under Vista. We have our application installing under the "Program Files" directory, and are copying the database's MDF file into the same directory. We are using AttachDbFileName to connect to the database and under XP the LDF file is created fine. Under Vista we receive an error that the database cannot be attached and I've noticed that the LDF file is not being created. I was receiving the exact same error under XP until I removed the LDF file from the install and allowed SQL Express to create it. I'm guessing that it is an issue in the permissions necessary to write the LDF file out to the applications directory, but that's just a guess. So, I was wondering what the Microsoft recommended method for doing a SQL Express XCopy deployment under Vista was?

Hi,
I'm preparing to install VS2005 along with SQL Server 2005 express on VISTA. Honestly, I just hope nothing will get screwed up...
- After installing VS2005, I will first install SQL Server 2005 express from my VS2005 DVD
- I will then install SQL Server 2005 express with Advanced services SP2 as well
as SQL Server 2005 express toolkit SP2 upgrades.
A few technical questions:
1. Considering the fact that I have Office2007 as well as Outlook 2007 installed on my VISTA machine, is there any install issues regarding SQL Server 2005 and Office2007? I remember having read posts reporting install problems... Any feedback would be appreciated.
2. After I install SQL Server 2005 Express from VS2005 DVD, do I need to install SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 before installing SP2?
Thanks all for your help,
Stéphane
