SQL Express Performance

We have a system based on a central server and several remote servers plus an application that periodically checks if the data in the remote servers are in sync with the central one. This app compares data using a simple query that performs a join between the central and remote server (linked servers) tables

The problem we are experiencing is the following: at system startup we used SQL Standard ed. on all servers and the comparison query took about 100 ms to complete. Now, for $$$ reasons, the remote servers has been moved to express editions and the query took about 1 sec to complete... this means that the query executes about 10 time slower than before.

I've noticed that using mgmt studio and launching a one query or 3 queries in the same script the execution time is almost the same, such as the engine would execute in the same time as before but with some trouble on connecting or passing data...

Any idea to understand what's on ?

SQL Express Performance On XP

Hi all,

Let say I have a machine with 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM, with 5 other client machines (WinXP) connected to this machine. What is the best combination installed in this machine:

1. SQL Express on Windows XP

2. SQL Express on Windows Server 2003

3. SQL Server (Full) on Windows XP

4. SQL Server (Full) on Windows Server 2003.

Someone said that number 1-4 will perform the same, is this true?

I know the answer will be different if the machine has more than 1 CPU or 1 GB RAM, since these are the max limitations of SQL Express. Or the number of clients is quite large, then the obvious choice will be number 3 or 4. Also, for this scenario, lets ignore the fact that SQL Server is (much) more expensive.

So, which one is the most and least efficient/fastest in performance?

SQL Express Performance Improvments

Hi,
I am using a web based CRM system that is being run over an intranet. I have over 400,000 contacts in the database and when running a lookup for example firstname = 'paul' it can take around 12 seconds to display 2000 results. I know thats not bad but i would love to know if there is anyway to improve upon that by indexing or changing a setting in SQL Express.

Monitoring SqlServer 2000 Performance With Express

I'm using Visual Web Developer Express and Management Studio Express, and my web site is on a shared web host´, running SqlServer2000. I'm looking for software that enables me to monitor the server, but is it possible? The only apps I've found (and downloaded and installed and unistalled) so far need administrative rights to the server so they won't work on a shared web host.

Express And Developer - Performance Counter Errors

I installed Visual Studio 2005 on my machine, which includes SQL Server Express. I then installed the Developer edition of SQL Server over the top, as that's the edition I wanted. I now get four errors in my Application event log whenever I boot Windows:

MSSQLSERVER - Performance counter shared memory setup failed with error -1. Reinstall sqlctr.ini for this instance, and ensure that the instance login account has correct registry permissions.
MSSQLSERVER - Error in mapping SQL Server performance object/counter indexes to object/counter names. SQL Server performance counters are disabled.
MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS - Performance counter shared memory setup failed with error -1. Reinstall sqlctr.ini for this instance, and ensure that the instance login account has correct registry permissions.

MSSQL Express 2005 Performance So Inconsistent!

Hi, just wondering if anyone noticed the MSSQL Express 2005 is so inconsistent with its performance. I was testing out a query with 2 joins, with the main table having about 13,600,000 records. With the same criteria value, sometimes it finished executing in 3 secs. sometimes almost a 1 min.

Could it be just the volume of the data? This is really driving me crazy!

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Performance And Replication

Wondering if anyone has any experience with SQL Server Express Edition (SSEXP). We're looking at a mobile sales force type model, so a local database on a laptop with no real time network connection. So the users would collect data locally, then connect up to the network every few days to replicate the data to a central server.
So questions.. Has anyone tried anything similar? How stable/mature is SSEXP? Any other thoughts, alternatives or gotchas anyone can think of?

Problem: Performance Difference Between MSDE And SQL Express 2005

Hello, all, I started out thinking my problems were elsewhere but as Ihave worked through this I have isolated my problem, currently, as adifference between MSDE and SQL Express 2005 (I'll just call itExpress for simplicity).I have, to try to simplify things, put the exact same DB on twosystems, one running MSDE and one running Express. Both have 2 Ghzprocessors (one Intel, one AMD), both have a decent amount of RAM(Intel system has 1 GB, AMD system has 512 MB), and plenty of GB offree disk space. MSDE is running on the Intel system, Express isrunning on the AMD system. To keep things fair I use the exact sameDB's and query on both systems. The DB's were created on MSDE so Isp_detach_db'd them from MSDE and then sp_attach_db'd them to Express(this is how MS says to do a "side-by-side" upgrade, so it'sacceptable to do so). After fighting problems in performancedifferences in different situations I have narrowed the problem downto this:Executing a simple select statement with join clause on the databasesyields a difference in execution time that is quite great. Using theExpress Management program I can run the query against either system(MSDE or Express, the two systems are connected via crossover cable toeliminate any network problems/issues). When running the queryagainst the MSDE system (which is over the network) I consistently get<20 ms response times on the query. When running the query againstthe Express installation (which is in shared memory) I consistentlyget 700 ms or longer response times. Both times are for the TotalExecution Time.The query is simply this: select db1.* from db1.owner.tablename as db1inner join db2.owner.tablename as db2 on db1.pkey = db2.someid wheredb1.criteria = 3So, gimme all the columns from one table in one DB (local to theinstallation), matching the records in another DB (also local to theinstallation), where one field in the first db matches a field in thesecond db and where, in the first db, one column value = 3.The first table has a total record count of 630 records of which only12 match the where clause. The second table has a total record countof about 2,700 of which only 12 match up on the 12 out of 630.Even though the data is the same and I've done the detach and attach,and even done the sp_updatestats, the difference in execution time isremarkable, in a bad way.Checking the Execution Plan reveals that both queries have the samesteps, but, on the MSDE system the largest consumer in the process isthe Clustered Index Scan of the 630 record table (DB1 in my queryexample), using 85%. The next big consumer is a Clustered Index Seekagainst the other table (2,700 rows), using 15%.The Execution Plan against the Express system reveals basically theexact opposite: 27% going to the Clustered Index Scan of the 630record DB1, and 72% going to the Clustered Index Seek of the 2,700record DB2.I'm sorry to be stupid but I have this information but I don't knowwhat to do with it. The best that I can tell from this is that thisis the source of my problems. My problems are that on my currentsystems that my clients use the data is returned to them faster thanthey can click the mouse and that the new system (that is, when theychose (or are forced by attrition) to move to Vista and thus Express2005) the screen pop is like 1.5 seconds. This creates poor userexperience. Worse, one process I allow the users to do goes fromtaking 14-30 seconds to over 4 minutes (all on the same machine withthe same OS and version of my program, so it's not a machine or OS ormy app problem).Anyway, I hope someone can shed some light on this now that I've paredit down some.Thanks in advance.--HC

I have upsized my access database to Mssql 2005 and I notice that SQL 2005 is much slower in data access than the access databse.

Is there something that needs to be done after the upsize? Have I missed something?

Problem With Performance After Leaving SQL Server Express Idle For Some Time

Hi, everyone!
I have this strange problem... After every time my application leaves sql-server idle (doesn't send anything, doesn't retrieve anything) next command to sql-server processes really long.
I've also noticed this bug/feature/misconfiguration even if I open a DB in Management Studio...
Please, could someone tell me, is there any timer that "puts a DB to sleep" if no one is using it for some time? Can I change the way server behaves in this situation?

Performance Is Degraded Drastically After Migrating To SQL Express 2005 From MSDE 2000

Hi,

Recently we have migrated our application from MSDE 2000 to SQL Server Express 2005(SP 1). This has significantly reduced the performance of our Windows.NET application which is developed using C#.

For example : While logging in to the application two databases are being attached.

Time taken in MSDE: 16 secs

Time taken in SQL Server Express 2005 : 58 secs
Also note performance is degraded for normal screens where data is retrived from database using inline queries.

Questions:

1) Is there any special(optimum) configuration(installation parameters) while installing the SQL Server Express 2005 setup?

2) Is there any query optimization to be done w.r.t SQL Server Express 2005 ?

We highly appreciate any help towards resolving the above problem.

Extremely Poor Query Performance - Identical DBs Different Performance

Hello Everyone,I have a very complex performance issue with our production database.Here's the scenario. We have a production webserver server and adevelopment web server. Both are running SQL Server 2000.I encounted various performance issues with the production server with aparticular query. SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I tried to do "Enabling CLR Integration" in my SQL Server Express: (1) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections", I got an error "An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service, (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Additional information: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?

Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Are The Databases Created Within VWD Express Accessible By Aspnet_regsql.exe Or Management Studio Express?

Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

I am having the same problem as Michael, with the exception that my laptop is running windows XP SP2.

BUT when I look at the SETUP LOG FILE there is NOTHING in it. This is what I get:

Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

Hi

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.

Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.

I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:

But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:

The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"

It works fine on the original F drive.......

Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

Issues With Microsoft SQL Serever 2005 Express Edition And Other Versions Of SQL Express

I have uninstalled the SQL Server Express Edition that I have installed from the CDs that were given to me during a Chicago Conference when READY TO LAUNCH Visual Studio 2005, SQL SERVER 2005, and Biz Talk 2005.
Then I went to microsoft website: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/register/default.aspx and downloaded and installed the so called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I got the messages Error that you read below. Then I Uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and went again to msdn website and downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced Services SP1 and installed it. I got again the same message as below.

MESSAGE:

1. First comes a window with the title: ��setup.exe �� Unable to Locate Component�?
And it displays a message:
This application has failed to start because MSTDCPRX.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
2. After I click the OK button of this window it comes another window with the title: ��Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Server Setup�?
And it displays a message: Failed to load SqlSpars.dll

Does anybody can tell what is going on with the 3 times I tried to installed different SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the same message?????

Import Existing Database Into SQL SERVER EXPRESS Management Studio Express

Hi,

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express

Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.

I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.

Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

Error Creating First SQL Express Database Via VWD 2005 Express: User Does Not Have Permission To Perform This Action

I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:

Local Database File:

User does not have permission to perform this action.

I've searched for help with this.

I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder).
The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality.
Everything is running locally.
No VWD installation errors.

Any ideas?

Full-Text Search Problem When I Upgrade From SQL 2005 Express To Express Advanced Services

Hi. I'm trying to get full-text search working on my SQL 2005 Express with Advanced Services and am having problems. I thought that I installed it correctly, and when I look in the services running, I see it SQL Server Fulltext Search(MSSQLSERVER). Also note that I have SQL Server 2005 Standard installed on this same laptop. I don't know if that Full text Search applies to the Standard, Express or both.

What I do see is that if I connect to the database engine named <mylaptop>, I can see the version is 9.0.1399 and I can see the check box to enable full-text indexing in a particular databases properties. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 1.

However, when I connect to the engine name <mylaptop>SQLExpress, I se the version is 9.0.3042, and I don't see the same check-box to enable full-text indexing. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 0.

I've never tried this before so I know I'm probably missing something basic. But, I have searched quite a bit and not found my answer. So, I'm looking to you for help.
