I am new here, and I've tried to see if this topic has been discussed elsewhere, but since I am not familiar with the terminology, I'll stick my neck out and ask.
Quick background: I am a C# developer with limited exposure to and experience with SQL. I now have to make some design decisions for a newer version of a "legacy" app. Since those of us who are left here basically know how to query the database and do the CRUD work, but don't have a lot of mad skills in the db design department, I am wondering to which degree we should leave things alone.
Ok, so now to the actual issue.
This database is used by an application that registers sales locally for certain types of sales teams. All data is eventually extracted and sent off as ASCII files to central processing, but until then, they are stored in a table for each sales campaign.
Information about campaigns is stored in one table called CampaignSettings. Highlights of this table include a CampaignID (primary key) and some generic sales information, plus a reference to the table that holds customer information. Yep, each campaign has it's own table, as customer registrations (not just for sales, but for information requests etc.) can easily scale into the hundereds of thousands, plus the number of campaigns will eventually reach at least 20-50 active at any given time.
Yep, perhaps it sounds like a huge task for inexperienced db people, that's why we have to learn, and fast! ;)
Ok, so these individual campaign tables is where it gets interesting, and they are the reason I am writing. Each campaign table has the same basic structure - a RecordID, an insertion date, several customer information fields. And then they have two additional sets of fields; The salesinfo "nodes", and the "custom fields".
There is a table called sinode, which pretty much looks like this:
id - int, primary key
campaign - foreign key to campaignsettings campaignid field
field - varchar, the name of the column in the campaign table
desc - a description of what goes in the field (used in the sales registration app)
default - a reasonable default value showing the user what to register
Using this method, the idea is that each campaign can have a different structure (i.e. different product types sold = different information needs to be registered).
Also, for the "custom fields" stuff, something similar is employed. There is a scriptvariables table, similar to the sinode one, which contains custom fields that campaigns contain - when they feel like it, they can for instance find everyone with a certain value in a custom field and send them some sales propaganda by snailmail, with some of these script variables used in the letter. The difference between salesinfo columns and custom field columns is basically that only salesinfo columns (plus a few of the standard ones present in all tables) are reported to central processing.
QUESTION #1: Is there a name for such a table structure, where the very definition of tables themselves are somewhat dynamic and applications need to query support tables in order to know the customer table structure for each campaign. Is the name "Brain Dead Design"? ;) Or is this an acceptable way of doing things?
Since we're now upgrading things a little, among other things we're considering moving from "old fashioned" ADO.NET to LINQ or some kind of O/R mapping application, so that we'll cut down on the maintenance of the database <-> object layer.
QUESTION #2: Will an O/R Mapper or LINQ (when Orcas goes RTM) be able to handle the kind of tables we're talking about here, considering that the structure of the individual customer table is not known at compile time, but depends on the database?
And then, there's the question that has been haunting me for a while now..
QUESTION #3: If you, the reader, who with great probability knows a lot more about database design than I do, were put in charge of such a project - how would YOU design it? Keep it like today? Create a huge normalization table for sales items and custom fields? What kind of architecture would be "correct" in this case, considering that our customers scale from the very small with few campaigns to the relative large with big, nasty customer tables.
I will be extremely grateful for any replies, and I promise to read many heavy SQL books as penance, and spend 10% of my work day helping newbies for several weeks once I attain enlightenment! :)

1. The proc builds a basic query, nothing real fancy, into a string variable called @SQL defined as varchar 2000. Depending on the result desired, the group by clause can be one of three different sort orders.
2. The string is executed via EXEC @SQL.
It seems to me that the whole process can eliminate the EXEC and just use some other construct. All the parameters are passed in via the initial call to the stored proc. It also seems that every time this is executed it will result in a new query compile and cache useage, no matter what. Wasteful? Should I take the developers aside and knock heads? I think the app was coded by some folks who were rookies then but may be willing to crack open their code. Or, am I the one that is a rookie?

I currently use Sourcesafe V6 to work with visual studio 6 and 2003 (although it isn't integrated in 2003), and wondered if that can be used?

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows XP SP2. I connect using Windows authentication.
The data source that I'm trying to hit is on a remote server. It's an OpenLink ODBC Data source, and the server is in another location. SQL Server 2005 Express and the ODBC connection are both installed/configured locally on my machine.
I can connect to the remote server. The DSN exists as a System DSN.
The DSN has its own proprietary configuration utility, which I can configure so that the server name is XPLILLEYGSQLEXPRESS. The configuration utility doesn't care; I connect successfully one way or the other.
When I open Management Studio Express, I can see my database (CMS) listed under the "Databases" folder, but there's no tables in there, other than the system tables.
So my question is, what am I missing?

In ODBC Data Source Administrator, I add the SQL Server driver, complete a name and select my local SQL Server instance, select Windows NT authentication (the client configuration is set to TCP/IP, dynamically determine port) and on clicking Next, the following errors occur:

I note that in the Help it says: "The SQL Server system administrator must have associated your Microsoft Windows login with a SQL Server login ID".
Is this the problem? If so, where do I make this association?

My question is, can reports in SSRS 2005 pull data from SQL Server 2000 in case both are installed side by side in the same machine and the 2000 version is the default instance while the 2005 express edition is the named instance?

I want to connect to SQLExpress database on the network. I can do so using code but I want to use the Data Source Configuration Wizard. It seems this only works for local instances of SQL server. Is this true?
I can connect just fine to the database on the network using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express...for what this is worth.
I have tried to map a drive to the SQL server machine and pick the mdf file but I get the error msg of network path is not supported for database files....I have turned on allow remote connections, allow tcp/ip, named pipes, added sqlserv.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my firewall exceptions ect..

I am attempting to insert information from Visual Web Developer 2005 using either the Gridview or Datalist controls into a SQL Server 2005 database and get stuck when defining the custom statement.When I enter the text within the insert tab, the <next> button remains greyed out, preventing me from continuing to the next page.If I copy the same text into the select tab, then I can continue with the wizard, however this raises other problems which may or may not be related (multiple insertions of the data into the SQL Server database table - possibly due to postback functions). I would rather use insert to confirm that my second problem is not because I am using the wrong option.My question is:Should I be able to use the insert function within VWD express or is this only available within the standard/pro editions?

Recently one column name has changed and thus throws error invalid mapping. When I open the source to do the changes noticed that all the colums are prselected now and also the datatypes got changed to default ( I had changed the datatypes as per my requirement while i developed). So now I had to select required columns from source and redo the datatype changes in advanced editor.Is there any option which doesnt disturb this settings and we just need to correct the mapping alone.Â

After that, in an xml task, I set the input properties like that:

I was trying to load data using SSIS, Data Flow Task, OLE DB Source, source was a view to a OLE DB Destination (SQL Server). This view returns 420,591 rows from Query Analyzer in 21 seconds. Row length is 925. When I try to executed the Data Flow Task from SSIS, I had to stop the process after 30 minutes, because only 2,000 rows had been retrieved. I modified the view to retun top 440, 000 and reran. This time all 420, 591 rows were retrieved and written in 22 seconds. Next, I tried to use a TOP 100 Percent. Again, only 2,000 rows were return after 30 minutes. TempDB is on a separate SAN Raid group with 200 gig free, Databases on a separate drive with 200 gig free. Server has 13 gig of memory and no other processes were executing.
The only way I could populate the table was by using an Execute SQL Task and hard code an Insert into table selecting data from the view (35 seconds) from SSIS.
Have anyone else experience this or a similar issue? Anyone have a solutionexplanation?

I am having a huge xml file with nested section.
i also have a xsd file for that xml.
i have a destination table where the data from the xml should be loaded into.
i am using the xml source transformation. But o get all the data i need to use multiple merje joins to get the data in a single row which i can insert into the destination.i was not quiet convinced with using so many joins.
so i tried using the script source transformation where i am using xml objects to get the node and dynamically construction the data row. and the output is then inserted into the destination.
on comparing the two approach the one using the script source is working much faster than the xml source transformation.
i wanted to know is there any limitaion using the script source to parse through xml files.
also i would like to know any other better way of getting the data from xml source without using the joins.

I am trying to create a program that transfers tables to flat files.
At this point in time, I have suceeded in created one that creates delimited files.
However, I am now trying to create fixed-width files as you can do with the SSIS designer, but programatically.
Is there a way to programatically determine the width of a column from the source table? I can not seem to find any kind of function or member that stores this information or allows me to retrieve it.
I know what I need to change in order to set a width for a column, but I just don't know how to find the width without just asking the user to provide one.

I have set up a new connection as a connection from data source, but I cannot see how to use this connection to create my Data Flow Source. I have tried using an OLE DB connection, but this is painfully slow! The process of loading 10,000 rows takes 14 - 15 minutes. The same process in Access using SQL on a linked table via DSN takes 45 seconds.
Have I missed something in my set up of the OLE DB source / connection? Will a DSN source be faster?

Today I was making a few reports.
When I tested the reports in Visual Studio, they worked great: I got the expected result.
But when I deployed the reports to our reportserver the problem started.
When I click on the directory in which my reports are deployed, I got my 4 reports.
Till now everything worked correct.
But when I click on a report to view the results it went wrong.
I got an error:
"Cannot create a connection to data source 'Live'"
(Live is the name of our data source).
We are using the Windows Logons and I am sure that I have all the rights on the server, I gave myself 'sysadmin' rights, so it should work.
I also have tried it with all the roles assigned on my account, but then it still won't work.
When I modify the data source, and set it to another server en database it works.
The datasource 'Live' exists on a x64 MsSQL server, en the other datasource is on a x86 MsSQL server.
Maybe that is the problem?
Can someone tell me what is wrong?

as far as I know from docs and forum datareader is for .NET data in memory. So if a use a complex dataflow to build up some data and want to use this in other dataflow componens - could i use data datareader source in the fist dataflow and then use a datareader souce in the second dataflow do read the inmemoty data from fist transform to do fursther cals ?
how to pass in memory data from one dataflow to the next one (i do not want to rebuild the logic in each dataflow to build up data data ?
Is there a way to do this ? and is the datareader the proper component ? (because its the one and only inmemory i guess, utherwise i need to write to temp table and read from temp table in next step) (I have only found examples fro .NET VB or C# programms to read a datareader, but how to do this in SSIS directly in the next dataflow?

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed in a Microsoft Windows XP Pro PC that is a terminal PC in our office Network. My Network Administrator has granted my terminal PC for Administrator Use. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?
Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

I am having the same problem as Michael, with the exception that my laptop is running windows XP SP2.
BUT when I look at the SETUP LOG FILE there is NOTHING in it. This is what I get:

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.
Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.
I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:
But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:
The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"
It works fine on the original F drive.......
Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?
