SQL Server 2012 :: Foreign Key References Multiple Tables

Feb 12, 2014

Is there any possibility to create a foreign key references more than one tables.

say for example,
Create table sample1(id int primary key)
Create table sample2(id int primary key)

Create table sample3(
id int primary key,
CONSTRAINT fk1 FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES sample1 (ID),CONSTRAINT fk1 FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES sample2 (ID))

this shows no error while creating, but in the data insertion it shows error..

Multiple Foreign Keys On Same Field, Based On Other Field

Jul 23, 2005

I have a table called BidItem which has another table calledBidAddendum related to it by foreign key. I have another table calledBidFolder which is related to both BidItem and BidAddendum, based on acolumn called RefId and one called Type, i.e. type 1 is a relationshipto BidItem and type 2 is a relationship to BidAddendum.Is there any way to specify a foreign key that will allow for thedifferent types indicating which table the relationship should existon? Or do I have to have two separate tables with identical columns(and remove the type column) ?? I would prefer not to have multipleidentical tables.

Can Only Use Primary Key And Not Foreign Key While Joining Tables?

Oct 9, 2015

I was trying a joining example provided in my book in which customer is a table and person is another table. The query provided in the book is this... USE AdventureWorks2012;

GO
SELECT c.CustomerID, c.PersonID, p.BusinessEntityID, p.LastName
FROM Sales.Customer AS c
INNER JOIN Person.Person AS p ON c.PersonID = p.BusinessEntityID;

This is the query that I did....

SELECT
      c.CustomerID,p.FirstName,p.MiddleName,p.LastName
FROM
      Sales.Customer AS c INNER JOIN Person.Person AS p
ON
      c.CustomerID=p.BusinessEntityID

ORDER BY
         p.BusinessEntityID;

Keys :-

Person Table
[PK_Person_BusinessEntityID]
[FK_Person_BusinessEntity_BusinessEntityID]

Customer Table
[PK_Customer_CustomerID]
[FK_Customer_Person_PersonID]

However,both of them gives a very different result set.But my question is why do we need to use the Customer.PersonID instead of Customer.CustomerID. Is it really important to use one primary key and one foreign,is there any specific reason why the book showed c.personId=p.BusinessEntityId.??

Updating Tables In Sequence With Primary Key And Foreign Key Relations

Feb 7, 2007

Hi all,
       In my project i will have the data in a collection of objects, I need to update series of tables with foreign key relations
       Right now my code looks like this
       foreach(object obj in Objects){
       int accountId=Account.Insert(obj.accountOpenDate,obj.accountName);//this will update the accounts table and returns account id which is a Identity column in Acccounts table
       int DebtId=Debt.Insert(accountd,obj.debtamount,obj.debtbalance); this will update the Debts table and returns DebtId
       ///series of tables like above but all the relevant data comes from obj and in the Insert Methods i am using stored procedures to Insert the data into table
       }
      The no of objects varies from 1000 to 1 milliion,, with this approach its taking more time to update all the data. Please let me know if any alternative procedure to handle this kind of scenario.

Thanks

Multiple Records Tied To Foreign Key Field?

Jun 6, 2008

I'm a total newb to SQL so I apologize if I butcher the description of what I'm looking to do :) Hopefully the example makes more sense. Is it possible for a single record in 1 table to contain relationships to several records in a different table?

What I've got so far is 2 tables - Hardware and Software, with ID Specifying primary keys HardwareID and SoftwareID respectively. the hardware records are for computer details and the software obviously are for programs. What I need to be able to do is pull up a hardware record and be able to see what software is installed on it, and vice versa pull up a software record to see which computers it's installed on. The problem I'm running into is that a computer can have multiple programs installed on it and a program can be installed on multiple computers, so I don't know how to create that relationship to account for that.

What I'd like to see is in the Hardware table a column for SoftwareID that has a foreign key relationship to the SoftwareID field in the Software Table, and vice versa....My question though is is that possible to do and have potentially multiple separate records it links to from that same column field? I might have a computer with say Windows XP Pro, Office 2003 Standard, Adobe Acrobat 8 and a proprietary rate calculator program that i need each to be displayed with their details when I open that computer's record. Or on the software side if I need to see which computers a license is already installed on then I want to make sure I can pull up the full list of computers.

And finally if what I'd like to do isn't possible as I described it...any recommendations for a better way?

Thanks all for the help!

Foreign Key To Multiple Tables

May 9, 2008

Starting with an example will make explaining this much easier.

I have two (or more) tables defined as follows.

Code SnippetTable1 Table2

Id [uniqueidentifier] Id [uniqueidentifier]

[...] [...]
Now, I would like to create a table Table3 that has its own primary key and references Table1 OR Table2.

Code Snippet

Table2
Id [uniqueidentifier]
ForeignId [uniqueidentifier, references Table1 or Table2]

This would enable me to insert any value into ForeignId that is present as the Id field in Table1 or Table2. Is this possible?

Best regards,
Till

Import Csv Data To Dbo.Tables Via CREATE TABLE && BUKL INSERT:How To Designate The Primary-Foreign Keys && Set Up Relationship?

Jan 28, 2008

Hi all,

I use the following 3 sets of sql code in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to import the csv data/files to 3 dbo.Tables via CREATE TABLE & BUKL INSERT operations:

-- ImportCSVprojects.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Projects

(

ProjectID int,

ProjectName nvarchar(25),

LabName nvarchar(25)

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Projects

FROM 'c:myfileProjects.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=======================================
-- ImportCSVsamples.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Samples

(

SampleID int,

SampleName nvarchar(25),

Matrix nvarchar(25),

SampleType nvarchar(25),

ChemGroup nvarchar(25),

ProjectID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Samples

FROM 'c:myfileSamples.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=========================================
-- ImportCSVtestResult.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE TestResults

(

AnalyteID int,

AnalyteName nvarchar(25),

Result decimal(9,3),

UnitForConc nvarchar(25),

SampleID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.TestResults

FROM 'c:myfileLabTests.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO

========================================
The 3 csv files were successfully imported into the ChemDatabase of my SSMSE.

2 questions to ask:
(1) How can I designate the Primary and Foreign Keys to these 3 dbo Tables?
Should I do this "designate" thing after the 3 dbo Tables are done or during the "Importing" period?
(2) How can I set up the relationships among these 3 dbo Tables?

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,

Creating Indexes On Columns That Are Foreign Keys To Primary Keys Of Other Tables

Jul 16, 2014

what the best practice is for creating indexes on columns that are foreign keys to the primary keys of other tables. For example:

[Schools] [Students]
---------------- -----------------
| SchoolId PK|<-. | StudentId PK|
| SchoolName | '--| SchoolId |
---------------- | StudentName |
-----------------

The foreign key above is as:

ALTER TABLE [Students] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Students_Schools]
FOREIGN KEY([SchoolId]) REFERENCES [Schools] ([SchoolId])

What kind of index would ensure best performance for INSERTs/UPDATEs, so that SQL Server can most efficiently check the FK constraints? Would it be simply:

CREATE INDEX IX_Students_SchlId ON Students (SchoolId)
Or
CREATE INDEX IX_Students_SchlId ON Students (SchoolId, StudentId)

In other words, what's best practice for adding an index which best supports a Foreign Key constraint?

Computed Field References

Feb 18, 2004

I am currently developing a stored procedure that includes a number of computed fields. Is it possible to reference a computed value, (eg. FLdA), or do I need to CREATE a temp file and then reference the FldA and FldB values. I have simplified my code, it is much more extensive in that there are numerous WHEN clauses attached to each FldA and FldB computation.

SELECT FldA = CASE
WHEN .... THEN CurQty * 1.5
WHEN .... THEN CurQty * 1.75 ELSE 0 END),
FldB = CASE .....
NewValue = CASE
WHEN .... THEN FldA * CurValue
WHEN .... THEN FldB * CurValue

Inserted Records Missing In Sql Table Yet Tables' Primary Key Field Has Been Incremented.

Jun 18, 2007

I have a sql sever 2005 express table with an automatically incremented primary key field. I use a Detailsview to insert new records and on the Detailsview itemInserted event, i send out automated notification emails.
I then received two automated emails(indicating two records have been inserted) but looking at the database, the records are not there. Whats confusing me is that even the tables primary key field had been incremented by two, an indication that indeed the two records should actually be in table. Recovering these records is not abig deal because i can re-enter them but iam wondering what the possible cause is. How come the id field was even incremented and the records are not there yet iam 100% sure no one deleted them. Its only me who can delete a record.
And then how come i insert new records now and they are all there in the database but now with two id numbers for those missing records skipped. Its not crucial data but for my learning, i feel i deserve understanding why it happened because next time, it might be costly.

Hi All

I hope someone smart can help me, it would be highly appriciated.

I am developing an SQL Serverdatabase and in on of the tables I need the primary key to consist of two pieces of data.

TblOrders: OrderNum, Orderdate, ....

TblDispatchers: DispatcerID, Dispatcher, DispatcherAddress

The OrderNum field in TblOrders need to be a composite of an AutoNum-field (incrementet by 1) and the DispatcerID from the tblDispatchers.

Can this be done, and how.

Many thanks

Copy And Delete Table With Foreign Key References(...,...) On Delete Cascade?

Oct 23, 2004

Hello:
Need some serious help with this one...

Background:
Am working on completing an ORM that can not only handles CRUD actions -- but that can also updates the structure of a table transparently when the class defs change. Reason for this is that I can't get the SQL scripts that would work for updating a software on SqlServer to be portable to other DBMS systems. Doing it by code, rather than SQL batch has a chance of making cross-platform, updateable, software...

Anyway, because it needs to be cross-DBMS capable, the constraints are that the system used must work for the lowest common denominator....ie, a 'recipe' of steps that will work on all DBMS's.

The Problem:
There might be simpler ways to do this with SqlServer (all ears :-) - just in case I can't make it cross platform right now) but, with simplistic DBMS's (SqlLite, etc) there is no way to ALTER table once formed: one has to COPY the Table to a new TMP name, adding a Column in the process, then delete the original, then rename the TMP to the original name.

This appears possible in SqlServer too --...as long as there are no CASCADE operations.
Truncate table doesn't seem to be the solution, nor drop, as they all seem to trigger a Cascade delete in the Foreign Table.

So -- please correct me if I am wrong here -- it appears that the operations would be
along the lines of:
a) Remove the Foreign Key references
b) Copy the table structure, and make a new temp table, adding the column
c) Copy the data over
d) Add the FK relations, that used to be in the first table, to the new table
e) Delete the original
f) Done?

The questions are:
a) How does one alter a table to REMOVE the Foreign Key References part, if it has no 'name'.
b) Anyone know of a good clean way to get, and save these constraints to reapply them to the new table. Hopefully with some cross platform ADO.NET solution? GetSchema etc appears to me to be very dbms dependant?
c) ANY and all tips on things I might run into later that I have not mentioned, are also greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Sky

I know this has to be possible maybe I am just missing somthing.

I am creating a matrix report which will compare year by year quotes to orders The issue is quotes and orders each have their own dataset. I will be pivoting on JobType which is in both datasets and spelled the same. Is there a way to do this or will I have to figure out how to union the tables? If not possible why does it allow you to name the dataset in the expression?

Foreign Key Table References Per Table (Max 253)

Feb 22, 2008

I've just found out about the concept that a table should only be references by foreign keys a maximum of 253 times throughout the database. I was hoping someone could give me a better idea of the dangers of disregarding this recommendation.

In our database, we have a Users table, which contains all of the users of a given system. In nearly every other table in our database, we have a field to indicate which user created the record. This is a reference back to the Users table. But as the number of tables has grown, we've surpassed that 253 limit. All I can tell, practically, is that I can no longer delete from the Users table. The query will fail, telling me the query optimizer ran out of memory, and that I should simplify my query.

The Users table is the only table that even comes close to this number of foreign key references. I don't even mind being unable to delete from the table. I'm mostly wondering if there are other problems with my design that will cause issues?

Is there a better way to keep track of who created a record in the database? Is it bad design to reference my Users table in so many places?

Thanks,

Foreign And Primary Key Question

Now, my question is, how do I get the foreign key in table two to auto-increment in conjuction with table one's primary key? They are after all the same data. Do I have to manually code to get table one data and save it to table two data?

INSERT INTO ATHLETE VALUES ('A001','TOM','HANKS','03-FEB-90','USA','C001');

With Tables:

CREATE TABLE ATHLETE(
ATHLETEID CHAR(4),
ATHLETEFIRSTNAME VARCHAR2(20),
ATHLETELASTNAME VARCHAR(20),
ATHLETEDOB DATE,
REPCOUNTRY VARCHAR2(12),

[Code] ......

I think the error is to do with the Athletes table (primary/foreign key)

How would I fix this in order to insert values without error?

Composite Primary Key And Foreign Key

Feb 8, 2008

Hi,
In my table1, I have a composite primary key ssn+firstname+lastname.
In table2 I have ssn, firstname, lastname, col1. In table2 I want to create a foreign key which references table1 primary key?
table1 and table2 has the primary, foreign key relationships. Still table2 need primary key. In table2 Can I make the ssn+Firstname+Lastname as primary key? or one column id as auto increment?

Which is best way?

Thanks
