I have a SQL function which returns a varchar(max). This gets truncated when the length is greater than 8000. Could you let me know how do I get the return value in a function without it being truncated.

I have to work with some configuration data that is stored in rows as a comma separated values. Something like this:
Key1 A,1,Z,0;B,2,Y,9;C,,8,X;
Key2 Alpha,101;Beta,102;
Each group of data is separated by a semicolon and each value by a comma. The quantity of values may vary from one key to the other. Over this values sometimes I need to run some selects, so I went with the idea to get it as a table using CLR.
There I find the first problem: I didn't find a way to return a "variable" column with a CLR function, I had to create a SP. Ok, now I execute spGetConfigurationAsTable 'Key1' and I can obtain something like this:
A 1 Z 0
B 2 Y 9
C 3 X 8
But I'm faced with a second problem: How can I run a query over this? I didn't find a way to run a query over an output of a SP. And I can't INSERT the result into a temporary table because I cannot CREATE the table static (remember the columns may differ from one configuration to the other).
So, it seemed a pretty simple task and a neat solution, but I'm kinda stuck. Is there a way to run a query over the SP output? Or is there a way to have a variable table output from a CLR UDF?
Here is the code of the CLR SP I use to obtain the data, and also the (non-working) CLR user defined function.
THANKS!

I have this assignment where i have a table full of two digit exam scores and I have to write a function that eliminate x number of top values and x number of bottom values and return all the middle values. When the function is called, obviously a number is entered such as 3 and the top 3 and bottom 3 scores are not returned. i.e. SELECT * FROM GetMiddleValues (3);
If anyone has any ideas on how to accomplish this, that would be great.

Hi all--I've got a derived column transformation where I am adding a field called Import_Date. I'm telling it to add as a new column and use the function "GetDate()" to populate the field. When I run the package, it returns NULL as the data value for all rows. Any idea why this might be happening?
I have a problem with "timeout expired. Thei timeout periode elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occured because all pooled connections were use and max pool size was reached" Then i explore and found out that i did not close my SqlDataReader, SqlDataAdapter, SqlCommand or my connection.
But i have a function that return a SqlDataReader. Is this function will cause a connection problem?
Thanks in advance

I'm trying desparately to write a PadRight function in SQL Server 2005. I seem to be failing miserably because the trailing spaces disappear when the data is returned. First of all, why does SQL Server think I want my string trimmed? And second, how do I overcome this? Code below:
Code Snippet CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[PadRight] (
@sourceString NVARCHAR(4000), @length INT, @padCharacter NCHAR(1) = ' ', @trimBeforePadding BIT = 1 ) RETURNS NVARCHAR(4000) AS BEGIN
DECLARE @returnStringLength AS INT, @toReturn AS NVARCHAR(4000) SET @toReturn = LEFT(@sourceString, @length)
IF @trimBeforePadding = 1
SET @toReturn = RTRIM(LTRIM(@toReturn)) SET @returnStringLength = LEN(@toReturn) IF @returnStringLength < @length
SET @toReturn = @toReturn + REPLICATE(@padCharacter, @length - @returnStringLength) RETURN @toReturn END GO
I'm running the following test query on a single table:

[Code] ....
And here's an example of the output I'm getting:
Why the exact same subquery in the THEN of the second CASE statement is returning NULL when the first one completes as expected?
I'm trying to convert the query immediately below into a function with the conditional logic to return a VARCHAR value with the gender: male, female or unknown.
SELECT empid, firstname, lastname, titleofcourtesy, CASE WHEN titleofcourtesy IN('Ms.', 'Mrs.') THEN 'Female' WHEN titleofcourtesy = 'Mr.' THEN 'Male' ELSE 'Unknown' END AS gender FROM HR.Employees; GO
Below is the conditional logic function I'm trying to create to replicate the logic above.
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.Gender ( @male AS VARCHAR(10), @female AS VARCHAR(10), @unknown AS VARCHAR(10) ) RETURNS VARCHAR(10)
Hello Guys,Have been getting this error( Implicit conversion from data type ntext to varchar is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query. ) when running on the live environment but it was fine when run locally. If anyone has similar problem please let me know the fix you have done. Thank you.
I started with an inline table returning function with a hard coded input table name. This works fine, but my boss wants me to generalize the function, to give it in input table parameter. That's where I'm running into problems.
In one forum, someone suggested that an input parameter for a table is possible in 2012, and the example I saw used "sysname" as the parameter type. It didn't like that. I tried "table" for the parameter type. It didn't like that.
The other suggestion was to use dynamic sql, which I assume means I can no longer use an inline function.
This means switching to the multi-line function, which I will if I have to, but those are more tedious.
Any syntax for using the inline function to accomplish this, or am I stuck with multi-line?
A simple example of what I'm trying to do is below:
Create FUNCTION [CSH388102].[fnTest] ( -- Add the parameters for the function here @Source_Tbl sysname ) RETURNS TABLE AS RETURN ( select @Source_Tbl.yr from @Source_Tbl )
Error I get is:
Msg 1087, Level 16, State 1, Procedure fnTest, Line 12 Must declare the table variable "@Source_Tbl".
If I use "table" as the parameter type, it gives me:
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Procedure fnTest, Line 4 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'table'. Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Procedure fnTest, Line 12 Must declare the scalar variable "@Source_Tbl".
I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.

Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?
I am trying to create a store procedure inside of SQL Management Studio console and I kept getting errors. Here's my store procedure.
Code Block CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sqlOutlookSearch] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here @OLIssueID int = NULL, @searchString varchar(1000) = NULL AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. And the error I kept getting is:

For the life of me I cannot figure out why SSIS will not convert varchar data. instead of using the table to table method, I wrote a SQL query so that I could transform the datatype ntext to varchar 512 understanding that natively MS is going towards all Unicode applications.
The source fields from Access are int, int, int and varchar(512). The same is true of the destination within SQL Server 2005. the field 'Answer' is the varchar field in question....
I get the following error

DTS used to be a very strong tool but a simple import such as this is causing me extreme grief and wondering of SQL2005 is ready for primetime. FYI SP1 is installed. I am running this from a workstation and not on the server if that makes a difference...
I am opening a simple command against a view which joins 2 tables, so that I can return a column which is defined as a tinyint in one of the tables. The SELECT looks like this: SELECT TreatmentStatus FROM vwReferralWithAdmissionDischarge WHERE ClientNumber = 138238 AND CaseNumber = 1 AND ProviderNumber = 89 The TreatmentStatus column is a tinyint. When I execute that above SQL SELECT statement in SQL Server Management Studio (I am using SQL Server 2005) I get a value of 2. But when I execute the same SQL SELECT statement as a part of a SqlDataReader and SqlCommand, I get a return data type of integer and a value of 1. Why?
I have a table that contains a lot of demographic information. The data is usually small (<20 chars) but ocassionally needs to handle large values (250 chars). Right now its set up for varchar(max) and I don't think I want to do this.
How does varchar(max) store info differently from varchar(250)? Either way doesn't it have to hold the container information? So the word "Crackers" have 8 characters to it and information sayings its 8 characters long in both cases. This meaning its taking up same amount of space?
Also my concern will be running queries off of it, does a varchar(max) choke up queries because the fields cannot be properly analyzed? Is varchar(250) any better?
Should I just go with char(250) and watch my db size explode?
Usually the data that is 250 characters contain a lot of blank space that is removed using a SPROC so its not usually 250 characters for long.
I hvae a stored procedure that has this at the end of it: BEGIN EXEC @ActionID = ActionInsert '', @PackageID, @AnotherID, 0, '' END SET NOCOUNT OFF
SELECT Something FROM Something Joins….. Where Something = Something now, ActionInsert returns a Value, and has a SELECT @ActionID at the end of the stored procedure. What's happening, if that 2nd line that I pasted gets called, 2 result sets are being returned. How can I modify this SToredProcedure to stop returning the result set from ActionINsert?
I was doing some research on how SQL stores data on disk. MSDN states that when storring a varchar, only the length of the data itself is used plus two bytes. So, if you store "car" in a VarChar(50) it will take 5 bytes. But when you store "car" in a VarChar(500) it will also take 5 bytes.
What is the reason users should define the parameter lenght? Can you use VarChar(8000) whole the time, without any drawback?
I have this function in access I need to be able to use in ms sql. Having problems trying to get it to work. The function gets rid of the leading zeros if the field being past dosn't have any non number characters.For example:TrimZero("000000001023") > "1023"TrimZero("E1025") > "E1025"TrimZero("000000021021") > "21021"TrimZero("R5545") > "R5545"Here is the function that works in access:Public Function TrimZero(strField As Variant) As String Dim strReturn As String If IsNull(strField) = True Then strReturn = "" Else strReturn = strField Do While Left(strReturn, 1) = "0" strReturn = Mid(strReturn, 2) Loop End If TrimZero = strReturnEnd Function
