SQL Login Password Change History
Oct 4, 2007Hello.
Is it possible to find out a complete history of when the passwords for any SQL Server logins were changed and by what/whom in 2005 standard edition?
Thanks.
Hello.
Is it possible to find out a complete history of when the passwords for any SQL Server logins were changed and by what/whom in 2005 standard edition?
Thanks.
SQL Server 2005 Express will not allow me to change the password for my login user. I tried deleting the user and re-creating the user. Another password is being put in although the password I put in was accepted. I even test to see what would happen if I left the password blank. It got accepted. But when I look at the password for my login user again, a different and much longer password was put in. I even tried this T-SQL statement:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<passwordname>', CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF
I am out of ideals. Is this a bug?
Please Help!!
We have an application using SQLOLEDB connection to a SQL Server 2005 database. Per domain policy, the users are required to change their password every 60 days.
The accounts are established to 'Enforce password policy'.
When we try to execute the 'ALTER LOGIN' command to change the password, locks are being established and will not free the account without bouncing the instance.
After issuing the command, any interaction with the server using this UserID results in a "lock request time out" error 1222.
I have tried issuing this command using both the application and through SQLServer Mgmt Studio Express and the results are the same.
Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2005 Express keeps putting in a different password than the one I chose. I would check the properties on the login I want to change. Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Is this a bug? I ever tried this syntax to no avail:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<mypassword>' CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF
I've tried to find a definitive answer to this but I cannot. If CHECK_POLICY = ON and CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON will password history be checked when a user changes their password? By password history I mean the idea that a password once used cannot be used again for another X password resets....
If password history does work, why would executing the following statement multiple times then work?
ALTER LOGIN Bob WITH Password = '123User321'
If I execute this statement four times in a row wouldn't I get a message that I cannot reuse the password on the second call?
Thanks in advance
I have a table of users including: UserName, Password (comuted col), FirstName, LastName, Address and other details....
I have to keep 10 Recent passwords , so I created another table "ut_Password " (Table2)
This table contains the following columns : Username, Password , and Password_Date.
I searched a lot but could not find something similar in my opinion need SP for it.
- 10 row Max for Password History in table 2
- when user change password it's need to be uniqe and it should not appear last 10 passwords
- Each user can have a maximum of 10 lines containing history password table
- Most old password deleted and replaced with a new password will enter the correct date (FIFO method first in first out).
Hi,
I am using SQL Server 2005 at home.
My problem is I forgot my password to log in to my server.
I only remember user name is 'sa'.
I haven't used it for two to three months. So I forgot password.
Previously, When I used sql server 2000, my login is as windows login. so no problem.
But this time, I set seperate log in and I got this problem.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
George
This one is giving me quite a bit more difficulty then I ever imagined it would...
Essentially I would like to use one table to store the change history for multiple tables. I would like to use an update trigger to check which fields have changed in each record, and write a single record for each field that changed containing the table name, field name, previous value and new value to a history table.
I can't seem to find a good way to do this.
There is a report when you click servername, report and run SCHEMA CHANGE HISTORY
I had my SQL 2005 running for a few weeks and this is many listed from day started is there a way to recycle this and clean it up on a weekly basic
I have seen alot of comments posted about an Issue in SQL2005 that no one at microsoft could really answer. If a user would try to alter his own login, it would fail stating a permissions error.
This is what I did to get it to work .
USE my_dataBase
GO
Alter Login [my_login] WITH PASSWORD = 'newpassword' OLD_PASSWORD = 'oldpassword'
In previous examples, people were trying to do an alter login without first narrowing it to the database.
If you do not include the USE statement it will fail.
Another thing to note is that they can only change certain things....they cannot turn off check_policy or check_expiration.
Happy Coding
I need to record in a table:
Who, When, What Field and New Value of Fields
When changes occur to an existing record.
The purpose is for users to occassionally view the changes. They'll want to be able to see the history of the record - who changed what and when.
I figured I'd add the needed code to the stored procedure that's doing the update for the record.
When the stored procedure is called to do the update, the PK and parameters are sent.
The SP could first retain the current state of the record from the disk,
then do the update, then "spin" thru the fields comparing the record state prior to the update and after. Differences could be parsed to a "Changes string" and in the end, this string is saved in a history record along with a few other fields:
Name, DateTime, Changes
FK to Changed Record: some int value
Name: Joe Blow
Date: 1/1/05 12:02pm
Changes: Severity: 23 Project: Everest Assigned Lab: 204
How does the above approach sound?
Is there a better way you'd suggest?
Any sample code for a system that spins thru the fields comparing 1 temporary record with another looking for changes?
Thanks,
Peter
one of my SQL Developer member had one observation that, size of the parameter 'Parameter_XYZ' in certain stored procedure had changed from 25 to 255 during some production fixes, however suddenly its looks like that, someone has changed it back to 25 instead of 255.
DECLARE @Parameter_XYZ
varchar(25);
Can we figure out in which sprint/drop the stored procedure was changed and the Parameter_XYZ back to 25. Can any log recovery mechanism will get such details.
Can we get stored procedure text between different alteration.
How can I easily identify who dropped a table?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to change password, using the code below.. The code below is in a stored proc and I am passing these parameters from a web application.....
sp_password [ [ @old = ] 'old_password' , ] { [ @new =] 'new_password' } [ , [ @loginame = ] 'login' ]
sp_password 'cust1','cust2','cust1'

I made my user part of the db_securityadmin role, but that does not help...
How can I give the above mentioned permissions, so that when user cust1 logs on then he can chnage his own password from the web application as long he has given his old password correctly?
When using osql from a command prompt the following script was run:
EXEC sp_password 'Current Password', '', 'TestLogin'
We were trying to set a password for a login to blank, but now cannot access login into the application because the application was looking a blank password for this user but the password would not work for blank.
Note ---This client only has MSDE installed, not SQL Enterprise.
If the script is run from Query Analyzer it works fine.
The script should have been this:
EXEC sp_password 'Current Password', Null, 'TestLogin'
It should have explictly stated NULL for the new password but it wasn't done.
Is there anyway to reset the password without knowing the existing password.
No other logins exist. They tried logging into the system with no password, '',"".
I am not sure what the password was set to.
Howdy - I am using SQL 7.0. I have done some research using the Books On Line and I do not find any documentation on how to change the sa password using a SQL Script. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

We have an application using SQLDMO tried to change password. From the trace file, it seems the application used a "SP_password" and the operation failed. However, the application returns its own message which doesn't help us at all in finding the reason. I wonder if SQL server can somehow track the operation(password change) and report a message if it failed.
Does anybody know if SQL server 2005 have such type of functionality? Or what could be the possible reasons of the operation failed. (The new passowrd fullfill the requirement of window policy.)
Thanks
