SQL Management Studio Slow To Respond
Mar 14, 2008
I've got a new machine at work here running Vista 64 bit....when I use SQL Management Studio to connect to a server it "Stops Responding" for a period of time and eventually comes back to life. When I check the server registration properties and click "Test Connection" it takes 13 seconds to succeed.
Anyone else have this...it's God awful slow. Other devs on XP don't have this problem. What gives?

Hi everyone!
I'm currently working on my first project which is using SQL express. The performance of the queries is really quick with management studio closed. But when I have it open to test queries, my program seems to take longer to connect to the server. Is there something I haven't set up right or is this to be expected when using the express edition?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I've recently installed SQL Server 2005 Express on my PC (winXP).
I'm finding that SQL Server Management Studio Express runs very slow. Every simple task takes 10-60seconds (open table, creating a table, saving anything etc). I can't find an answer to this anywhere. I've read neumerous articles that people wern't online therefore it was running slow because a certificate was trying to verify in the background... but I'm online and I've disabled the certificate so it can't be that.
This is a fresh install so I can't understand why it runs so slowly! When I used to use enterprise manager with SQL Server 2000 it worked at lighting speed.
What's going on?

Dear Gurus
When I open a large table (say more than 1,000,000 Rows) in the SSMS by right clicking on the table name, it takes a very big time to fully open the table.More than 20 minutes for 1,000,000 records on a local instance.
SQL Server 2000 EM was extremely faster. Does any one knows a work around?
I need to be able to view and edit the data in SSMS.
Thanks in advance.

I have a parent package which executes 14 child packages in parallel, which on average take ~10 seconds each to complete when I execute the parent packege using BIDS or DTEXEC.
However, if I run the parent package using SQL Management Studio (Integration Services > Stored Packages > MSDB > Right Click > Run Package) each package takes in excess of 10 minutes to run, getting progressively slower as each package starts.
Surely the package is executing in exactly the same way as BIDS/DTEXEC, just a differenct UI?
Can anyone explain why this happens?
Thanks in advance,
Leigh

Is it possible to run both Sql Server Management Studio: Express and full blown side by side?
I am developing with the full blown product but would like to test Management Studio Express on the same box.
Is this possible?

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.
Thanks

Hi everyone,
I'm connecting to my LOCAL MSSQL 2005 database using Management Studio. I find that after a few hours of use, Management Studio's connection to the database becomes extremely slow. For example, if I right click on a table and choose Open Table, it will take at least 30 secs to open the table. Then if I make changes to a record and move the cursor to the next row, it will take another 30 secs to update the record.
I don't think it's anything to do with indexes, cos my table is very small (less than 20 records).
I'm not running any batch jobs on my local database. In fact, my SQL Agent is turned off.
I notice this does not happen when I connect to my REMOTE database, which is hosted on a commercial web host.
What could be wrong here? Has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
I am not sure whether this questions goes here.
I have lot of packages stored in my hard disk and i am creating some more. Now my machine gets very slow only if i open these packages in visual studio. When i check the CPU usage by that time it is not even 2%. If i try to navigate between data flows. I get message "Microsoft Visula studio is doing some internal operations and if you are getting this message in normal usage repor this to Microsoft". Is this the issue in my visual studio installation or some thing else.
I also reinstalled all the software 3 weeks back and it was working good till yesterday again the the problem started yesterday.

Hi,
I have a desktop application that uses an Access DB.
Now i have converted it to Visual Studio 2008 and tried the SQL CE Edition.
I wrote all the methods, create the database and the tables on the fly and seems to work really fine.
The database is 20MB big, but the performance is vey bad.
I mean with Access it's very fast, you actually don't see how slow it is, and with the SQL CE now,
it takes 7 seconds !!!! for a few access instead of under 1 second with Access.
I can't imagine that this is normal, there must be something i am really missing in my code.
Looks something like this:
Code Snippet
SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine("Data Source = URANO.sdf");
engine.CreateDatabase();
engine.Dispose();
// Verbindung öffnen
sqlConnection = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source = URANO.sdf");
sqlConnection.Open();
// creating the tables here with data
sqlCommand = new SqlCeCommand("SELECT ID FROM Laender WHERE Name=@Name", sqlConnection);
sqlCommand.Parameters.Add("@Name", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 30);
sqlCommand.Parameters[0].Value = land;
sqlDataAdapter = new SqlCeDataAdapter(sqlCommand);
sqlDataSet = new DataSet();
sqlDataAdapter.Fill(sqlDataSet, "Laender");
landID = "" + (((int)sqlDataSet.Tables["Laender"].Rows[0][0]) + 1);
this takes 1 - 2 seconds
btw: the whole class is static and the variables also are static.
Would it be better to load all the database tables into datasets, and only work with the datasets in memory ?
Well i thought that the SQL CE Engine, would load the database into memory and be just fast.
I mean we have 2 GB of memory or 1 the most of us, 20MB isn't that much.
Thanks !
Nick

Hello,
I am using CLR integration to provide all the stored procedures for my project, but the issue I am finding is that deployment of my assembly and it's stored procedures (and two UDTs) is now starting to take so long that I am getting a timeout from SQL Server during deployment (with the default settings of 600 seconds remote connection timeout).
Is there a way to speed-up the deployment process?
I know I could employ a differing strategy of splitting the procedures into multiple assemblies, but I am more concerned that the legth of time used to deploy might indicate some other issues with my server.
By the way, my current assemly contains: 247 Stored Procedures, 7 User Defined Functions, and 2 User Defined Types.
Thanks,

Hi folks,
I'm working within VS2005/Business Intel studio environment. I've got one master package, which loads about 18 sub-packages as tasks.
After openin the master package (and waiting 5-10 minutes for the packages to open and validate), maneuvering within the IDE is nearly impossible, it is so slow. Context menus can take 30 seconds to open. Certian operations, like closing a window, seem to hang the environment.
Does anyone have any feedback about this kind of ide performance problem?
Thanks, Scott

...why the script generator in 2005 Management Studio is SO FREAKING SLOW!?
2000's EM would script out all the objects in a databases in 15 seconds. The new GUI is taking three-to-five seconds per object on my 1000 object database.
Man, the Management Studio interface is so lame.

I like some of the new features in sql2005 management studio, but WHY do you have to right-click -> Modify to view the stored procedure code?
It is SO annoying, previous versions was a simple and quick-double click.
To me this is a major blunder!
Anyone else agree with me?

We are use Vista X64 and SQL-Server 2005 X64 Developer Edition. We are able to connect to a sql2005 server x32 server using SQL 2005 management studio, 32-bit version. From the x64 box (vista x64 with sql x64), we are able to connect to the SQL 2005 32-bit server version using sqlcmd and telnet. But, we are having issues connecting to the 32-bit version of SQL 2005 using the x64 sql management studio GUI. I look all over the internet and the SQL BOL and I was not able to find any compatibility issues with the SQL Management Studio x64 been documented. I am thinking that the reason for the issue is because the SQL management studio is trying to connect using native x64 client drivers. If that is the case, is there another method of connecting to a x32 SQL server. I see that the only way to approach this issue is to install the 32-bit version of the SQL client tools on the x64 system. Thanks
P.S. all servers are using SQL SP2 ( no Cumulative Update 4)

How can I get sql Management Studio (2005) to use Sql Compact 3.5? It's been working fine with 3.1, but now when I upgrade my own code to use 3.5 and create a new DB then management studio says it can't open it as it's the newer version (3.5xxx and it wants 3.0xxxx)
Exact text is:
You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database. If this is a SQL Server CE 1.0 or 2.0 database, run upgrade.exe. If this is a SQL Server Compact Edition 3.0 or later database, run Compact / Repair.
