SQL Memory Issues - Need Advice

Jul 23, 2005

We are currently using SQL 2000 Standard with W2K Standard and the
server has 3Gb of RAM. SQL is currently occupying 1.85Gb of memory
which I believe is the maximum for this version of the OS. I believe I
am at my limitations with my current versions of software. My
questions are:
1) Is the version of SQL Standard actually different than the
Enterprise edition. Will my database run on Enterprise if it runs on
Standard?
2) The same questions goes for the operating system? If my code runs
on W2k Standard will it run on Advanced Server?

Thanks a lot...

SQL In-Memory :: Table Memory Optimization Advisor Validation Passed But Cannot Migrate

Jul 13, 2015

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.

I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.

After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:

Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

AWE/Lock Page In Memory Drawbacks? Min/Max Settings, Memory Issues

Oct 11, 2007

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.

Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.

I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.

We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.

1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?

2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?

3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?

4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Would Max Memory Including SSIS And SSAS Memory

Mar 27, 2008

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.

My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

Thanks,
fshguo.

Memory Issues, SSIS Package Out Of Memory Help

Dec 6, 2006

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

Thanks! Aaron B.

Sql Server 2000 Using Less Memory After More Memory Added

Aug 22, 2007

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

thank you

Memory Management (fixed Memory, AWE)

Jul 17, 2006

Hi,

I am going to install SQL Server 2000 (then SQL 2K5) on a Win Server 2K3 with 8 GB of ram, but it will be 16 GB in the near future.

I would like to reserve a fixed memory (for momemt less than 3-4 GB) for SQL Server and the rest for application (virtualization).

Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?

How can I manage and optimize memory keeping in mind AWE. (any doc, website available?)

SQL 2012 :: Configuring Memory Per Query Option And Index Create Memory Option

Feb 10, 2015

So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.

From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.

Performance Issues Total Server Memory Vs Target Server Memory

Aug 2, 2006

Hi

I did a load testing and found the following observations:

1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.

2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory

Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

Questions About Memory Based Bulk Copy Operation(InsertRow Count,array Insert Directly,set Memory Based Bulk Copy Option)

Feb 15, 2007

Hi~, I have 3 questions about memory based bulk copy.

1. What is the limitation count of IRowsetFastLoad::InsertRow() method before IRowsetFastLoad::Commit(true)?
For example, how much insert row at below sample?(the max value of nCount)
for(i=0 ; i<nCount ; i++)
{
pIFastLoad->InsertRow(hAccessor, (void*)(&BulkData));
}

2. In above code sample, isn't there method of inserting prepared array at once directly(BulkData array, not for loop)

3. In OLE DB memory based bulk copy, what is the equivalent of below's T-SQL bulk copy option ?
BULK INSERT database_name.schema_name.table_name FROM 'data_file' WITH (ROWS_PER_BATCH = rows_per_batch, TABLOCK);

-------------------------------------------------------
My solution is like this. Is it correct?

// CoCreateInstance(...);
// Data source
// Create session

m_TableID.uName.pwszName = m_wszTableName;
m_TableID.eKind = DBKIND_NAME;

DBPROP rgProps[1];
DBPROPSET PropSet[1];

rgProps[0].dwOptions = DBPROPOPTIONS_REQUIRED;
rgProps[0].colid = DB_NULLID;
rgProps[0].vValue.vt = VT_BSTR;
rgProps[0].dwPropertyID = SSPROP_FASTLOADOPTIONS;
rgProps[0].vValue.bstrVal = L"ROWS_PER_BATCH = 10000,TABLOCK";

PropSet[0].rgProperties = rgProps;
PropSet[0].cProperties = 1;
PropSet[0].guidPropertySet = DBPROPSET_SQLSERVERROWSET;

if(m_pIOpenRowset)
{
if(FAILED(m_pIOpenRowset->OpenRowset(NULL,&m_TableID,NULL,IID_IRowsetFastLoad,1,PropSet,(LPUNKNOWN*)&m_pIRowsetFastLoad)))

I Really Need Some Advice.

Jan 13, 2004

Hi

Dont laugh but...

I am not entirely ignorant to web technologies, and best practices but i am having a bit of a planning dylema.

My company has a well established SQL 2000 database with windows application which has been created by myself, what i am planning on doing is creating a web site, using asp.net and publishing some of the information, so that our clients may use it, and stop pestering us on the phone. what i would like to know is what would be the best way forward, obviously i don't want to show them all our information, and don't want to put 5Gb worth of data onto a ISP website. What would you suggest i do?

Thanks in advance

SELECT @returnDay = DatePart(day,GetDate())
If @returnDay = 8
BEGIN
select * from Hospitals left join Units ON Units.HospitalID = Hospitals.HospitalID where Units.HospitalID is null
RETURN

this is just a part of the procedure I am trying to create, I am getting hospitals that haven't submitted any data and wish to send them an email.

on the other hand I have two tables that have all the data for emailing to hospitals but are not linked to tables giving the list of hospitals

I have been advised to create a cursor(easier said then done) that will go through my list of records that need to receive an email

nothing going very well with that at the moment.

so I was hoping to see if somebody has any other suggestions for me.....

Need Advice

Jul 18, 2006

Hi all,

My first request for help here even if I read this site quite often and got tons of usueful information. Thanx all

I have an application (VB 6) calling store procedure on a SQLServer 2000 DB. One of the table gives me headache. I wrote a simple store procedure to insert a record into that table. If I call the store procedure from query manager it works perfect but if I call it from VB it looks like to work (return from the execute fine) but then I query the table for that record and it'll just take time and then return time out. I have to stop the VB application and then query it again then it'll return no record.

I suspect the table being locked somehow but I check inside the VB app code and that's the only place the table is called. Further more I have hundred of store procedures being used that way and they're all ok. I indexed the table , no use either...

I am just short of ideas how to debug this...I'll need your advice :)

thank you

Any T-SQL Advice?

Feb 6, 2006

Okay, given my newness to SQL, and the complexity of this query, I thought I'drun this by you for your opinion:SELECT DISTINCT a.WeekEnding, c.lastdate, c.numlate, b.totaldateFROM Accomplishment a LEFT OUTER JOIN(SELECT weekending, COUNT(weekending) AStotaldateFROM AccomplishmentWHERE (EmployeeID = 50)GROUP BY weekending) b ON a.WeekEnding =b.weekending LEFT OUTER JOIN(SELECT weekending, MAX(entrydate) ASlastdate, COUNT(weekending) AS numlateFROM accomplishmentWHERE employeeid = 50 AND entrydate >weekendingGROUP BY weekending) c ON a.WeekEnding =c.weekendingORDER BY a.WeekEndingWhat I'm trying to do is for each pay period find which ones the employeesubmitted a timesheet and which they were late (and if they were late, howmany of them). However, the query takes a good 5 seconds, and it seemsremoving the "entrydate > weekending" clause speeds things up to almostinstant, however it does ruin the count that I really want. No idea whythat makes such a difference..

Somewhat new to the whole programming field, and to be honest, seems a little intimidating with the little I know of the programming side. Just looking for some thoughts.

New To CE And Need Some Advice.

Aug 3, 2007

Hello,

I am new to the CE OS, SQL CE and mobile computing in general. I have been developing database applications using MS products ever since Windows 3.11 and Visual Basic 1.0. I have used MS Access and SQL Server since they were first released. But, I have never worked with Windows CE or any of the mobile OSs or with SQL CE or SQL Mobile.

We now have a project that requires us to develop a database application on handheld devices using the CE 4.2 and CE 5.0 OSs.We will be using CF 2.0, VS 2005 and SQL 2005 for our development environment.

My questions are:
1. Which version of mobile SQL will allow us to best develop for both the CE 4.2 and 5.0 OSs usinf VS 2005? I have done a lot of reading online and it's pretty confusing. There are quite a number of different versions out there. It seems some work with 4.2 and some with 5.0. Is there a version that will work for both?

2. Is SQL CE 3.0 (Sql 2005 Mobile) available for other than Laptop and Tablet use? When i finaly got to the download page for this version there was verbiage there that suggested it was not available for smart devices.

3. What is a good source of info to resolve these questions? I am using the MSDN areas for CE and SQL Mobile but haven't really found what I need to get started. Any suggestions on forums, books, articles, blogs, etc... would be greatly appreciated.

I know these are very broad questions but I want to get some advice from the experienced before going to far here.

Can anybody tell me if SQL 2005 will run ok on Windows Server 2008 32bit and/or 64bit.

Also, we are currently planning to implement OCS 2007 and we are considering running it on Windows Server 2008 32bit with SQL 2005. Does anyone know if this combination is possibleand if not what implementation should we be looking at.

Thanks for your time,

Aug 9, 2007

Hi everyone,

i wonder if any one can give me some advice.

here is my situation, i have a central database server that contains all the data, running in an intranet, the client application, which is a thick client containing most of the biz logics is installed on a laptop,

i m required to develop a solution so that when the client application is disconnect to the database server (e.g. the laptop is taken away somewhere) the application can still work and when the client application gets connect to the database server again the application will be able to synchronize changes with the database and update all the changes. and i m not allow to develop a web-base application

my initial thinking is to use merge replication, however, i m conerning with the performance on the laptop if i have to install sql server on the laptop.

is there any other approach that can still achieve the requirement and have a better performance?

Need Advice. Blog

Hello,I am creating a simple blog system using SQL 2005.I have a Blog table:[BlogId] > PostId (PK), BlogTitle, ...And a Posts table[Posts] > PostId (PK), BlogId (FK), PostContent, PostLabels, ...PostLabels would have the following format:Label1,Label2,Label3, etc ...I will need to perform 3 actions:1. Get all posts in blog2. Get all labels in a post3. Get all unique existing labels in all posts in a blog and make a list.I am not sure if my approach of using a simple labels column in my Posts table is a good idea.So my other idea would be to add two more tables:[BlogLabels] > BlogLabelId (PK), BlogId (FK), LabelName ...[LabelsInPosts] > BlogLabelId (PK), PostId (PK)So my idea is:1. When creating a post one of the parameters would be a comma    separating string with all labels for the post.   Inside SQL Procedure I will need to loop through each label and    check if it exists in BlogLabels. If not then I added it.   For each label I add a records in LabelsInPosts.   How to create this loop? Am I thinking this right?2. To get a list of all labels in a blog I would need to go to    BlogLabels and get all labels which are related with posts in    LabelsInPosts. Those posts must be only the ones that are related   with my given BlogId.   Grrr, this is getting really confusing for me.   Is this possible to to? How?Please, give me some advice about all this.Thanks,Miguel
