SQL Query Running Much Slower Than EM

Jun 12, 2002

Ok,
here's a funky one That I can't find an expanation for. If I go into EM and choose a table from a database and return all rows, I get immediate results and can start browsing records. If I go into query analyzer and do a select * on the same table, it takes up to 20-25 minutes to return the result set. This used to only take like 5 mins. What gives? Anyone seen this before?

Stored Proc Is Running Much Slower Than Running The Script Directly

Mar 14, 2008

One of my stored procs, taking one parameter, is running about 2+ minutes. But if I run the same script in the stored proc with the same parameter hardcoded, the query only runs in a couple of seconds. The execution plans are different as well. Any reason why this could happen? TIA.

MSDE Running Much Slower Than Access DB??

Feb 19, 2004

I have a large VB 6.0 application running with Jet 4.0 Access DB. I am considering moving the DB to MSDE. For testing, I installed MSDE on another computer in a peer to peer network running XP sp1, loaded up the DB from Access to MSDE2000A -- all without problem. (I should add the obvious fact I am new to using SQL server.)

What I find is that with a relatively small test DB, running just a single instance of the application, query response from MSDE is taking several seconds (4-5 second lag) longer than response from the Access DB, which runs extremely fast. This is with the Access DB installed on the same network drive, running the same application and the same queries syntax -- only changing configuration of connection for each (SQL vs Jet 4).

Any clues as to what may be going on? The lag time is unacceptable. I am using SQL password instead of NT security. It seems the process is perhaps lagging in the process of authorization.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas on this.

Help Cursor Based Stored Procedure Is Getting Slower And Slower!

Jul 20, 2005

I am begginner at best so I hope someone that is better can help.I have a stored procedure that updates a view that I wrote using 2cursors.(Kind of a Inner Loop) I wrote it this way Because I couldn'tdo it using reqular transact SQL.The problem is that this procedure is taking longer and longer to run.Up to 5 hours now! It is anaylizing about 30,000 records. I thinkpartly because we add new records every month. The procedure works like this. The first Cursor stores a unique account and duedate combination fromthe view.It then finds all the accts in the view that have that account duedatecombo and loads them into Cursor 2 this groups them together for datamanipulation. The accounts have to be grouped this way because aaccount can have different due dates and multiple records within eachaccount due date combo and they need to be looked at this way aslittle singular groups. Here is my procedure I hope someone can shead some light on this. Myboss is giving me heck about it. Query Slower When Run All Together

Nov 14, 2000

Hi gurus
I haven't put the code in since I've tried several variations & keep having the same problem: I'm hoping someone will recognise the problem from a description of it.

There are two parts to my query.

* Part 1 creates and then populates a temporary table

* Part 2 is a select query which joins the temporary table to a permanent table, on 2 fields including a datetime field. The data types on each side of the join are identical.

If I run the first part of the query through ISQL and wait for it to complete before running the second part (in the same ISQL window), it (the second part) takes just 3 minutes. However, if I run both parts together, the second part takes ages, in fact I'm not sure if it completes at all (could wait indefinately!).

I tried placing a 'GO' between the two queries when running them together, but it didn't seem to help.

Please help, I'm stumped.
Thanks
Jo

Why SSIS Package Slower And Slower

Mar 1, 2008

hi, friends, please look at this:

I have a SSIS package, and inside it I do something like below:

1. I have a SQL component, to give back a object to store the records.
2. I have a VB script component, I direct the object I got in 1 step into the script as a dataset.

My problem is:
I run the package in the SQL SERVER 2005 Store Procedue like this:

do
dtexec.exe package.dtsx
loop untill i>t

I control the it runs 30 times. But I found that the speed is slower and slower.
the first time, it takes about 600 s, but the last time, it takes the 1800 s.

Why?
The package don't drop the object it create during the loop in the Store Procedue ?
Thanks!

How To Kill A Long Running Query Running On A Background Thread.

Sep 1, 2006

If I start a long running query running on a background thread is there a way to abort the query so that it does not continue running on SQL server?

The query would be running on SQL Server 2005 from a Windows form application using the Background worker component. So the query would have been started from the background workers DoWork event using ado.net. If the user clicks an abort button in the UI I would want the query to die so that it does not continue to use sql server resources.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

Parameterized Queries Running Slower Than Non-parameterized Queries

Jul 20, 2005

HelloWhen I use a PreparedStatement (in jdbc) with the following query:SELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = ?ORDER BY group_nameIt takes a significantly longer time to run (the time it takes forexecuteQuery() to return ) than if I useSELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = 'M'ORDER BY group_nameAfter tracing the problem down, it appears that this is not preciselya java issue, but rather has to do with the underlying cost of runningparameterized queries. When I open up MS Enterprise Manager and type the same query in - italso takes far longer for the parameterized query to run when I usethe version of the query with bind (?) parameters. This only happens when the table in question is large - I am seeingthis behaviour for a table with > 1,000,000 records. It doesn't makesense to me why a parameterized query would run SLOWER than acompletely ad-hoc query when it is supposed to be more efficient.Furthermore, if one were to say that the reason for this behaviour isthat the query is first getting compliled and then the parameters aregetting sent over - thus resulting in a longer percieved executiontime - I would respond that if this were the case then A) it shouldn'tbe any different if it were run against a large or small table B) thisperformance hit should only be experienced the first time that thequery is run C) the performance hit should only be 2x the time for thenon-parameterized query takes to run - the difference in response timeis more like 4-10 times the time it takes for the non parameterizedversion to run!!!Is this a sql-server specific problem or something that would pertainto other databases as well? I there something about the coorect use ofbind parameters that I overall don't understand? If I can provide some hints in Java then this would be great..otherwise, do I need to turn/off certain settings on the databaseitself? If nothing else works, I will have to either find or write a wrapperaround the Statement object that acts like a prepared statement but inreality sends regular Statement objects to the JDBC driver. I wouldthen put some inteligence in the database layer for deciding whetherto use this special -hack- object or a regular prepared statementdepending on the expected overhead. (Obviously this logic would onlybe written in once place.. etc.. IoC.. ) HOWEVER, I would desperatelywant to avoid doing this. Please help :)

Re-display Result Set Without Re-running Query In Query Analyzer?

Apr 9, 2006

I hope I am not asking about something that has been done before, but Ihave searched and cannot find an answer. What I am trying to do is torun a query, and then perform some logic on the rowcount and thenpossibly display the result of the query. I know it can be done withADO, but I need to do it in Query Analyzer. The query looks like this:select Varfrom DBwhere SomeCriteriaif @@Rowcount = 0select 'n/a'else if @@Rowcount = 1select -- this is the part where I need to redisplay the resultfrom the above queryelse if @@Rowcount > 1-- do something elseThe reason that I want to do it without re-running the query is that Iwant to minimize impact on the DB, and the reason that I can't useanother program is that I do not have a develpment environment where Ineed to run the queries. I would select the data into a temp table, butagain, I am concerned about impacting the DB. Any suggestions would begreatly appreciated. I am really hoping there is something as simple as@@resultset, or something to that effect.

Why Does 8 Bcp's Run Slower Than 4 Bcp's?

Mar 22, 2007

I am not sure if this is the correct forum but here goes!

We rebuilt our SqlServer 2000 Trans replication the other night. It used to run in 3 hours but now it runs in 9.5 hours (7 hours bcp out, 2.5 hours bcp in). We have a dedicated distributor box (4 processors), a 4 processor publisher, and a 2 processor subscriber. None of the systems exhibited any processor stress or unusual disk activity. The network tests OK (tested with file xfers). But the bcp's wrote data at 2.5 to 4 minutes per 100k rows, and they loaded the data at about 100k rows in 10 seconds or less.

As you know, Replication Snapshot uses bcp on each source table to build a collection of flat-files. Then it uses bcp to load those files into the subscribing tables. Because bcp is the workhhorse here, I decided against posting this in the Replication forum.

The only change I know of is increasing MaxBcpThreads from 4 to 8. This parameter specifies the number of bulk-copy operations that can be performed in parallel. I was thinking that 8 bcp's might somehow be killing the drive where all the bcp files are written.

Any ideas?

Everything Slower With SP2?

Apr 12, 2007

I installed SP2 two days ago and it seems like my SSIS-packes now take longer time than before - the very opposite of what I was hoping for.

Anyway, here are some data from runs on our performance environment. No new data is added to the source database between the runs, but I do a full process of the cubes every time (time is in seconds):

Package...............................SP1...............................SP2

Load dimensions..................200.................................270

Load fact data.......................800...............................1600

Process cubes....................2100...............................2600

So, as you can see, everything is going slower with SP2. I have yet to look into if there are any specific steps in the packages that take longer time than before, but it's odd that all packages take a longer time to execute. Especially that cube processing is slower suprises me.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Thanks!

Re-Running Query

Jun 20, 2007

Presumably, an RDL data set is only queried once before generating a report. And presumably, this is true even if the data set feeds a list control. However, I'd like to know if I can cause a data set to be queried repeatedly from a list control. I need to do this, because the data set contains aggregate functions that would be impacted by each "pass" the list control would make.

Is it possible to make a data set queried repeatedly in this fashion?

Is SSIS Slower Than DTS????!!!!!!

Oct 29, 2005

I am new to SSIS and probably doing some mistake while transferring data from oracle source to oracle destination.  Please guide me..   In our project we need to transfer nearly 80 GB data from old system (Oracle 9i) to new system (Oracle 10 G Release 2). To do this exercise we are testing and comparing performance and cost effectiveness between different tools like SSIS, DTS and SQL * Loader (oracle built in tool).   We have selected one table, which is having 40 fields with 3 million records. The destination table is also having same structure.    Surprisingly SSIS is giving slower performance than DTS!!!!! It is taking more than two hours or nearly two hours. I have tested the same process 3 times.   I have used two servers (1 GB RAM, Dual processor) for source and destination with minimum load and used data flow task (OLEDB Source and OLEDB Destination).   In case of transferring data from Oracle to SQL SERVER I am finding €œFast Loading Option€? in data access mode, which is giving considerable performance boosting. But while transferring data from Oracle to Oracle I am not finding €œFast Loading Option€? !!!!!!!!!   For performance boosting which provider I should use??   Please suggest me€¦ if any one can€¦ would remain grateful to him€¦   Thanks and Regards Sudripta Rakshit.

Running Query On All Databases Within An SQL

Oct 3, 2007

Hi,

I'm running SQL 2000 SP4.

On this server I have a few databases. I need to run the below query against each database. Since the server has approx 50 databases this will take time.

Is there any way for me to modify this so as it will automatically
run against each database one at a time and then create a single output file with all the results.

I do not want it to run against all of the databases at the same time as it will kill my server so it must run and gather results on each database at a time.

QUERY to be run

SELECT RelativeFileName

FROM Collection, Saveset

WHERE Collection.CollectionIdentity = Saveset.CollectionIdentity

Running A Query On Two Databases

Mar 31, 2008

Hello all,
Can anyone please tell me what query to use for joining two tables in two databases together?

Basically, we have two databases called 'system' and 'site' respectively. The 'system' database has a table called 'users' and each user has a unique id which is also linked to the tables in the 'site' database.

The only problem i have got is, I want to be able to get the actual user names not the unique id and the only way to get this from my SQL statement is to be able to link the uniqueid for each user in the 'site' database to their corresponding uniqueid in the 'system' database.

Please, how can I do this?

Running A DLL In The Query Analyzer

Nov 23, 2007

Hi,I have a DLL that I want to run from the Query Analyzer. I tried thefollowing:USE master;EXEC sp_addextendedproc BLAH, '\Other-ServerPathToBlahBlah.dll'and I get the error:ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1Cannot load the DLL \Other-ServerPathToBlahBlah.dll, or one ofthe DLLs it references. Reason: 126(The specified module could not befound.).The DLL was written in Cobol. The "Other-Server" in the Path above isthe server that Cobol (and the DLL) is located on.I looked at the dependencies for the DLL and it includes (notsurprisingly) Cobol Dll's. It should find those on the other server. What can I do?Thanks!

Error While Running A Query

Dec 12, 2007

I have recieved the following error message while running a query on SQL2k5 on a Windows 2003 64-bit EE server

"The operating system returned error 1450(error not found) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x00001c32062000 "

I will be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction on what this can be.

Thanks

Long Running Query

Jun 2, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to optimize a long running (several hours) query. This query is a cross join on two tables. Table 1 has 3 fields - ROWID, LAt and Long. Table 2 has Name, Addr1,Addr2,City,State,Zip,Lat,Long.

Both tables has LatRad - Lat in radians, LonRad- Lon in Radians. Sin and Cos values of Lat and Lon are calulated and stored to be used in the distance formula.

What I'm trying to do here is find the nearest dealer (Table 2) for each of Table 1 rows. The Select statement takes a long time to execute as there are about 19 million recs on table 1 and 1250 rows in table 2. I ran into Log issues- filling the transaction log, so I'm currently using table variables and split up the process into 100000 recs at a time. I cross join and calculate the distance (@DistValues) and then find the minimum distance (tablevar2) for each rowid and then the result is inserted into another Table (ResultTable).

My Code looks like this:

Declare @DistValues table (DataSeqno varchar(10),Lat2 numeric(20,6),Lon2 numeric(20,6),StoreNo varchar(60), Lat1 numeric(20,6),Long1 numeric(20,6),Distance numeric(20,15))

Declare @MinDistance table (DataSeqno varchar(10) primary key,distance numeric(20,15))

Insert into @DistValues

Select DataSeqno,T.Lat Lat2,T.Lon Lon2,S.StoreNo,S.Lat Lat1,S.Long Long1,

distance=3963.1*Case when cast(S.SinLat * T.SinLat + S.CosLat * T.cosLat * cos(T.Lonrad - s.Lonrad) as numeric(20,15)) not between -1.0 and 1.0 then 0.0 else acos(cast(S.SinLat * T.SinLat + S.CosLat * T.cosLat * cos(T.Lonrad - s.Lonrad) as numeric(20,15))) end

from dbo.TopNForProcess T , dbo.Table2 S where Isnull(T.Lat,0) <> 0 and Isnull(T.Lon,0)<> 0

Insert into @MinDistance

Select DataSeqno,Min(distance) From @DistValues Group by DataSeqno

Insert into ResultTable (DataSeqno,Lat2,Lon2,StoreNo,LAt1,Long1,distance)

Select D.DataSeqno, D.Lat2, D.Lon2, D.StoreNo, D.LAt1, D.Long1, M.distance from @DistValues D Inner Join @MinDistance M on D.DataSeqno = M.DataSeqno and D.Distance = M.Distance

I created a View called TopNForProcess which looks like this. This cut down the processing time compared to when I had this as the Subquery.

SELECT TOP (100000) DataSeqno, lat, Lon, LatRad, LonRad, SinLat, cosLat, SinLon, CosLon FROM Table1 WHERE (DataSeqno NOT IN (SELECT DataSeqno FROM dbo.ResultTable)) AND (ISNULL(lat, 0) <> 0) AND (ISNULL(Lon, 0) <> 0)

I have indexes on table table1 - Rowid and another one with Lat and lon. Table2 - Lat and Long.

Is there any way this can be optimized/improved? This is already in a stored procedure.

Thanks in advance.
