SQL Report Server From Oracle Production

Jun 1, 2007

I have been doing research into the best way to do this for some time. I use SQL Server 2005 Standard so replication is out of the question.

I have discovered Slowly Changing Dimensions, Linked Servers, etc Which may help me bring the data out of Oracle 9i and into SQL. Ideally I want the data refreshed on a daily basis. I want to specify which tables and views are taken from Oracle and manage the relationships in SQL.

Any direction as to best practices for this task would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to the game of synchronizing two major server products but have worked extensively with data integration on smaller scales.

Deploying Report To Production Server In A Different Domian.

Mar 19, 2008

Hello All,
I am having an issue deploying reports to my Production server via VS 2003 IDE.

The scenario is that I have a dev box with all 3 components installed on the same server(VS 2003, SQL 2000, sp3 , IIS and Report Server). I have no problem deploying to this Dev server. Now I need to deploy them to a different server(Release) in a different Domain. The Release implementation is, IIS and Report Services installed on one Server and SQL instance on a different server , but both IIS and SQL server are in the same domain. So in my VS 2003 IDE I choose a project/solution and then right click to Deploy I get an error " A connection could not be made to the report server <server URL>". My Solution Property page "Target Server URL " is pointed to this Release server virtual directory(http://Release:81/Reports). This Relase IIS web server has different web site, I installed the RS in the Default website.
I can browse RS server(http://Release:81/Reports) from anywhere via web and get to Site settings and all, But I cannot deploy from VS2003. Am I missing anything? Earlier I used to get at least log-in credentials to enter my UID and PW, as I provide them I never got anything back, it keeps asking me for UID and PW. Now I straight away get "Conection could not be made" error.

Any insights will be very helpfull.

Thank you
Ranjit

Deploy SSIS Package To Production Which Has A Connection To Oracle Databse

Aug 14, 2006

Hi There,

In SSIS package development environment, I was able to connect to an oracle database and pull data into my sql server database. I installed the client tools for oracle and I put an entry into the tnsnames.ora and I was able to connect.

But in production environment, if I deploy the package on sql server, I was wondering if I had to do the same job of downloading the oracle client tools onto my production machine --which creates a tnsnames.ora file to it default location and then edit it with tthe tns entry-- or is there a better way to do this--avoiding the download?

Can somebody plzz help me ?

Thanks.

We just encountered a huge problem and this the error..

An error has occurred during report processing.

Cannot create a connection to data source 'dsHP9000'.

The 'MSDAORA.1' provider is not registered on the local machine.

and figured out that there is no Oracle driver with 64 bit.

Please help me in solving this error.

An Attempt Has Been Made To Use A Data Extension 'ORACLE' That Is Not Registered For This Report Server.

Oct 29, 2007

I am attempting to deploy a sample report (SQL 2005 Workgroup w/SP2) and I am receiving the subject error message when I attempt to view the report on the web server. We are using SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition connecting to an Oracle database.

Is this a limitiation of this version? In report designer, I am able to select Oracle as a connection type. If I try to create a data source at the server, "Microsoft SQL Server" is the only option available. If I look at the ReportServer config file, I see many other data connection types available. Did I miss a step, or is this a Workgroup Edition limitation (it's not documented as a limitation that I am able to find)?

Thanks in advance...

Trouble With: Linked Server To Oracle Using OraOLEDB.ORacle Provider

Jan 11, 2007

Hi--

I am running SQL Server 2005 on Win2k3:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio      9.00.2047.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools      2005.090.2047.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)      2000.086.1830.00 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Microsoft MSXML      2.6 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer      6.0.3790.1830
Microsoft .NET Framework      2.0.50727.42
Operating System      5.2.3790

I have the OraOLEDB.Oracle provider installed to the (C:oraclexe) directory.

I am having problems querying from linked oracle server.  When i setup oracle as a linked server and purposely enter an incorrect password the query i run tells me i have an incorrect password.   So it at least knows that.  when i set the correct password and run a query I get this error:

(i replaced the real server name with "someServer".)

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.

Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer".

This is how I set up my Linked server:

Provider: "Oracle Provider for OLE DB"

Product Name: SomeServer

Data Source: SomeServer

Provider String:  "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle;Data Source=SomeServer;User Id=MyLogin;Password=MyPassword"

The query I run is:

Select * from [Someserver].[schema or database]..[tbl_name]

Any help???  What am i missing?

Report Model With Oracle

Feb 22, 2008

Hi,

I am using Oracle 9.2.6.0 and SQL 2005 SP2.
I have created a report model based on Oracle DB.
I use .Net Providers/Oracel Client Data Provider driver for my data source to connect to Oracle. It works fine but the performance is a bit slow.
Then I tried to use .Net Providers for OLEDBOracle Provider for OLEDB driver. When I deploy, I got the following error message: "System.OleDB".

I tried to use my last resort, which is Native OLEDBOracle Provider for OLEDB. When I deploy, I got the following error message: "Exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException' was thrown".

Anyone has this issue before?
What is the best driver to use and what is the best approach in term of performance.

Thanks and Regards,
XL

Error - Report Model For Oracle 10g

Jan 10, 2008

I've searched forums and found responses from 2006 forward, but none that I'd find satisfactory, so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

I'm using SQL have SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 SP2. I've successfully used SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio to create reports and charts from data stored in an Oracle 10g database.

I have a distributed team and while I'm creating the official reports, I need them to be able to utilize the Report Builder to create their own reports for day to day management of their own activities.

I created a Data Source and a Data Source View successfully. When I tried to utilize the Report Model Wizard to create a report model the builder can use, I get an error.
ORA-02179: valid options: ISOLATION LEVEL { SERIALIZABLE | READ COMMITTED }

I've read that this was ''fixed" with SP2. I've also read that there are work-arounds (which I don't necessarily understand). However, I've read plenty of MS documentation that says that this should work.

Can anyone provide any clarity around where my problem lies and how I might mitigate?

Thanks in advance,

Report Builder/Model With Oracle

Jan 31, 2008

Hi,

My environment:
Computer A
- SQL 2005 SP2 (32 bits)
- Oracle 9i client
I am the local administrator

Server A
- Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition (64 bit)
I have read only access to Oracle DB.

I am able to create a report model with Oracle DB and deployed it successfully. In my report model (rmOracle), I named my data source: dsOracle and dsvOracle for my data source view which contains one named query. Then I set a logical primary key for the named query, everything is OK so far.

Now, in Report Builder (RB) I have created a simple report (table) based on the report model I created before. Then when I preview it, I got the following error message:

Microsoft Report Builder:

Report execution error
The report might not be valid or the server could not process the data.

Details:
System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.
----------------------------
Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'.
----------------------------
An error has occurred during report processing.

I tried to look more information by saving the report and run it from the report server directly. And I got the following error message:

An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'.
System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.

I open the RDL file and found that when creating a report with RB, it creates its own data source, which is fine. The problem here is that data source points to the wrong connection, which I thought it should point to the same connection of the report model its based on. In this case it should point to Oracle connection (dsOracle).

Anyone has any idea how to solve it? Or did I miss something here?

Thanks and Regards,
Uzzi

Error Creating Report Model Based Upon Oracle Database

May 29, 2006

In MS Visual Studio, when creating a new Report Model Project, after defining a datasource to an Oracle database (and successfully testing it), and a simple datasource view (1 table), when I click "Run" in Report Model Wizard, I receive the following error:
"ORA-02179: valid options: ISOLATION LEVEL { SERIALIZABLE | READ COMMITTED }"

It does not appear that one can create Report Models from an Oracle database (since the SQL being used to query the Oracle database cannot be edited and contains syntax errors?). Is this the case?

Thank you.

Oracle Data Source Connection Problem Using Report Manager

Jan 2, 2007

I have an issue when using Report Manager for viewing reports that use a certain Oracle data source. When viewing the reports in Report Designer the reports display without problems. But when trying to display the reports with Report Manager, after deploying the reports to the Report Server, I now get the following error message:

blablabla....ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified

For testing purposes I am running Report Designer, Report Server and Report Manager locally on a PC with Windows XP. I am using Reporting Services 2005, IIS 6, Visual Studio 2005, an Oracle 9.x client and an Oracle 9.x (not 100% sure) database that is hosted on a remote server.

Earlier I got an error message that stated "ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified". Access rights to some Oracle folders for the Network service account did the trick here but then I got the "NLS parameter" error message. What I have tried to do is removing the NLS_LANG register variable and also modified the value of the variable so that it matches the value of the NLS_LANG variable on the server that hosts the Oracle database, but none of them have worked. Any ideas?

Maybe this is an issue that is more appropriate in an Oracle forum but what the heck..the problem could reside in Reporting Services..

Thanks, Stefan

Help Needed - How Can I Set Up A Backup SQL Server Machine As An Exact Copy Of My Production SQL Server

Jul 20, 2005

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My problem is that I need to set up a backup SQL Server 2000 machinewhich can be used in case of a failure to my primary. All databases(30 as of now) must be an up to the minute exact copy of productionand include most recent changes in data as well as any structurechanges (Tables, Views, SP's, Triggers, Users . . etc). When I tried this using Transactional Replication, the replicationprocess gets fouled up once I introduce any kind of structure changesto the DB. I've considered the idea of doing periodic backups andrestoring it to my backup SQL server, but this does not give me theconcurrency needed with 0 latency.I've seen articles that recommend using Transaction Replication with'Scheduled Table Refresh', and also doing database dumps to restore onthe backup machine, but I have not been able to find any documentationregarding this to try out. How can I implement this type of backupstrategy in SQL 2000?

Usage Of CLR In Production SQL Server

Nov 6, 2007

Like most enterprise there is the database administrator (dba) and there are the developers(dev). The dba are conservative while the developers are also exploring their options.

One of the current usage I'm experimenting on is to provide data visualization - image for the data. Like most I needed to "create" the System.Drawing assembly in the database, marking it unsafe.

During my testing, my code had some exception and that brought down SQL Server.

I read that the CLR is better compare to the sp_OAs as well as the extended stored procedures written in C++ because it isolates the execution in a separate app domain and termination is clean - in case of any errors, it should not bring down SQL Server.

Also I read marking assembly unsafe void these benefits of isolation.

Instead of having to manage the situation where it involves code review by the dba and asking the dba to take some risk, is there a technique where all CLR code that runs in the production server does not pose stability issues.
