SQL Security :: Can't Connect To Server 2014 When TLS 1.0 Is Disabled

Jun 24, 2015

After installing SQL Server 2014 SP1 CU1 (build version 12.0.4416.1) the SQL Server service no longer fails to start when TLS 1.0 is disabled, but no matter what I have tried I can't successfully connect to the database.When trying connect using shared memory I get this message:A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)And if I tryTCP/IP or Named Pipes I get this:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 are enabled on the computer and working fine for IIS. what I can do to get SQL Server to work successfully with TLS 1.2 or is it still just not supported yet?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: PowerShell Security Error

Jul 16, 2015

I have a SQL Server 2014 instance running on a SQL Server 2008 R2 server. The server is not clustered, it is just a stand alone SQL Server. The syspolicy_ purge_history job fails every now and then with the error message: "A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is 'import-module SQLPS -DisableNameChecking'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'Access to the path 'PowerShell_CommandAnalysis_Lock' is denied. '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed."

Google isn't bringing up much besides the whole"If this is a clustered server make sure you have the right server name in the command" answer, which isn't the case here. Some days this job fails and some days it succeeds. I have checked out task scheduler to see if there were any conflicts there, found nothing. Nothing in the event viewer either.

SQL Server 2014 :: Linked Server To File Folder Security

Dec 8, 2013

Here is my Problem:

1. I have sql 2008 R2 running on my LocalHost.
2. Created Data Base [Customer].
3. Created Linked Server [CUSTOMERLINK] USING Microsoft Jet 4.0 to link to Drive F:Data which has DBF files in it.
4. Create dbo.Customer_Upload Table.
5. INSERT INTO [Customer].[dbo].[Customer_UpLoad]
([Name],[Email])
SELECT
NAME,EMAIL
FROM [CUSTOMERLINK]...[CUS]

All this works fine. I can even put it in to an After Insert Trigger on another table and it works.

My problem is that I need this to work in a scheduled job.

F:Data is just a folder with files in it.

This info is from a Restaurant POS system and I need to update it every night.

I have tried every which way to to setup the security issue as there isn't any login security on the folder and SqlServerAgent wants security.

SQL Security :: Unable To Connect Via Linked Server

Sep 17, 2015

Here are some details:

Domain = dm
Windows User = dmTestUser, member of sysadmin on SQLFL and SQLNY
SQL Server 2012 = SQLFL
SQL Server 2012 = SQLNY
Table = Product (exists in SQLNY and SQLFL)
SP = spGetProduct() (resides on SQLFL)
SQL Login = dbuser (on SQLNY, member of dbo on Product table)

I created a linked server on SQLFL pointing to SQLNY.  The local server login to remote login mapping is as follows:

Local Login = dmTestUser
Remote Login = dbuser

with "Be made without security context" option selected. Run spGetProduct() to get Product records from SQLNY and populate Product table on SQLFL via the linked server.Here are tests I did:I connected to SQLFL using dmTestUser in SSMS.  I manually executed the stored procedure spGetProduct() without any issues.  Procedure gets Product records from SQLNY and populates the Product table on SQLFL.  Everything is good.

I created a SQL Agent job called "Get NY Product" on SQLFL to execute spGetProduct().  I invoked this agent job and it executed successfully.However no data was loaded to the Product table on SQLFL.  My stored procedure caught this error: Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "SQLNY".

1. When sql agent job runs, which account does it use?  Is the SQL Server Service or SQL Agent?I believe it's the sql agent.
2. What do I need to do to make this work?

Win Server 2003

.net Framework 2.0
No firewalls or Proxies are in the way.

The computer has to be as a workgroup machine to reflect our live server.

The user LMSEndPointUsers is a SQL Server Login
The user ostc-dev-001endPointUsers is a machine login

We have employed the Security class as per the information given in the SQL Server documentation with the intention of using the WS-Security headers that apparently are to be used when trying to authenticate using a SQL Server login.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Code used to connect and try and reciev the dataset.

string sUserName = "userName";

string sPassword = "Password";

LMS_Endpoint.OSTC_LMS_Endpoint wsSQLTester = new LMS_Endpoint.OSTC_LMS_Endpoint();

SqlSoapHeader.Security sqlSec = new SqlSoapHeader.Security();

sqlSec.Username = sUserName;

sqlSec.Password = sPassword;

XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create("Security.xml");

writer.WriteStartElement("security");

sqlSec.WriteXml(writer);

wsSQLTester.sqlSecurity = sqlSec;

DataSet dsMySet = wsSQLTester.ostc_SQLSoapTester("RH6915145507");

Basically authorization is denied 401.
Hope someone can help here as have tearing my hair out.

Thanks in advance

SQL Security :: Using Contained Database Login To Connect To Server Via Excel

Jul 29, 2015

I have a SQL Server 2014 database that is partially contained.  I am trying to connect to the database via Excel using a contained user login.  When I choose Data - Other Sources - From SQL Server, I get the Data Connection Wizard window to Connect to the Server.

This window allows me to enter the server name and a User Name and Password (for SQL authentication), however it does not allow me to specify a database.  When I click the Next button, I get a 'login failed' error which I assume is happening because the contained user is not a SQL login.

I have the same issue trying to create an ODBC connection using the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

Is there another way for me to connect to a SQL Server database using a contained login with Excel?

The following error occurred when trying to connect to 2012/2014 SSIS Server using SSMS remotely. If this cannot be resolved, packages will have to stored on filesystem instead.

This error can occur when you try to connect to a SQL Server 2005 Integration Services service from the current version of the SQL Server tools. Instead, add folders to the service configuration file to let the local Integration Services service manage packages on the SQL Server 2005 instance.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Does Security-admin Role Plus Deny Alter Any Login Cancel Each Other Out

Aug 27, 2015

I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.

I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.

I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).

So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

Cannot Connect After Changed To "Windows NT Only" Security

Jun 12, 2001

WE have an appl testing the SQL security feature, at some point in time
they drop the BUILTINAdministrators group from the login,
changed the security mode to "Windows NT only", but no users have system admin
server role, after the SQL server was restarted, no one can connect to the server. No one has authority to change the security mode back to "mixed"
(all standard logons will not work)
Any comment ?

The way I can think of to fix the problem:
detach all user databases
run rebuildm.exe
reattach all user databases
recreate the required logins

Any other suggestions/solutions, Thanks

SQL Security :: Cannot Connect To Local Instance

Sep 25, 2015

I have verified that the following services ARE running.SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)SQL Server Browser SQL Server VSS Writer.This one however will not start ... For some reason it starts then automatically turns off.SQL Server Agent (SQLEXPRESS).When I try to connect using my <machine name>/instance  and Windows Authentication I get the following error ...

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)".The connection specified in the "Connect to Server" box was working perfectly fine before I upgraded. I thought it might have been my Norton 360 Premier but I uninstalled it.I AM having issues with the adapter frequently dropping the internet connection but I just disconnect and reconnect and that resolves itself.The other technique I tried was to replace the server name with the IP address ... <192.168.0.22>/Instance ... This actually seemed to find the SQL Server but rejected the Windows Authentication ...

"Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication." I have several databases on here and would hate to have to reinstall SQL Server and manually hook them back up.

Cannot Connect To Localhost Using Windows Security Group As Login

Feb 19, 2007

I have a test environment set up at home with a small windows server 2003 Active Directory domain. I created a windows security group on the dc and added myself and another user to the group. I then use this group as a login for SQL Server and add the login to the sysadmin server role. This works exactly as I would expect on the Windows Server computer (which is also the Domain Controller) regardless of which computer I use to connect to this Windows Server computer. However, when I set up the exact same login on the local sql server instance of my client laptop running windows xp pro, the I get an error message (Login failed for user MYDOMAINdgolds...) when I attempt to connect to the local instance of SQL server, even though I am able to connect to the instance on the domain controller with no problems using this same client laptop under the same user account. The only way I am able to connect locally on the laptop under this account (which does not have local admin privileges on any box, for testing purposes) is to add the user account separately as a login, rather than as part of a group. I'm curious as to why being a member of a security group that is part of the sysadmin server role does not allow me to connect to the local instance of SQL Server on this client laptop. The windows server computer is running SQL2k5 Enterprise, and the client laptop is running SQL2k5 developer. Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Witness Server Connection To Mirror Disabled?

Hello,

the Mirror Server is not connected to the Witness Server.

Mirror Server and Wtiness Server are instances on one server.

I get this error:

The reason 1451, and state 3, can be of use for diagnostics by Microsoft. This is a transient error hence retrying the request is likely to succeed. Correct the cause if any and retry."

In the SQL Profiler for the Witness Server I get "An error occurred while receiving data" Error 64.

In the witness server logs is nothing depending on this.

The connection between the witness and principal and the mirror and principal are all right. I have created User logins with certificates on the same way on all instances.

What can I do?

Disabled The Automatic Round Of SQL SERVER 2000 On The Float Data Type

Hello,

I have a problem with the round of SQL Server 2K on the float data type.

In my application I do a SQL request for find a row in a table of SQL Server 2K.

This is the request :

SELECT DISTINCT N_ROW_ID FROM COMM WHERE N_ARTICLE_ID=79510 AND N_DATASOURCE_ID=1 AND N_SOURCE_ID=-102 AND N_PROVIDER_ID=-100
AND N_LEAD_TIME IS NULL AND N_UNIT_PRICE = 329.78 AND N_UNIT_PRICE_CURRENCY_ID=1

N_UNIT_PRICE is a float data type.

In the line need, the field N_UNIT_PRICE has 329.78 but with the round of SQL Server 2K I have 329.779999999999997.

So I never find the row

Do you have a solution for comparate a float flied with SQL Server round and a float send in a request as my 329.78?

I can't transform the column in decimal or numeric data type.

Is it possible to Disable the function?

Cannot Connect W/ Java App But Can Connect W/ .Net App - SQL Server Express 2005

Dec 12, 2006

I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).

The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.

SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.

Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.

These are my values in my Java app web.xml -

<init-param>
<param-name>DBDriver</param-name>
<param-value>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBURL</param-name> <param-value>jdbc:sqlserver://localhostsqlexpress:1055;databaseName=CORNERS</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBUser</param-name>
<param-value>sa</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBPwd</param-name>
<param-value>myPasswd</param-value>
</init-param>.

And yes, the port is 1055 - I checked to find it.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.0 (sqljdbc_1.0.809.102).

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong so that the login fails in the Java application but works in the .Net application?

Who Disabled My Job?!

Oct 30, 2007

I must introduce myself... Kris Allain. I am a VERY new DBA. Basically I as sort of pushed into the position even though I have no previous DBA experience. I come more from a Net Admin background although I've only graduated with a degree in MIS 2.5 years ago.

With that said, I ran into a problem last week in which took down a mission critical application for 4 hours. We have an app that his highly transactional and I'm using the Full Recovery method for this DB with weekly full backups, daily differential backups, and hourly log backups. Someone (could have been me) disabled the log backup job and a couple of days later the log grew until there was no more disk space (35+ gb). Well, it took me 4 hours to back up and shrink the log and get the system up and running again.

I told my boss what had happened and now he wants to know who did it. I told him it could've possibly been me, but I highly doubt it because it appears to have been disabled between 7-8pm on my "work from home" day, which I specifically remeber packing it up and playing xbox at 4:30pm.

Could someone help me figure out what happened and if there it is possible to track these changes in the future?
