SQL Security :: How To Change IP Address Of Clustered Instance

May 7, 2015

In our lab we have 2 clustered instance of Sql server 2018R2 as follows

Virtual Server Name
 IP SqlVir 10.1.1.6
SqlVirDr   10.1.1.12

The Data is SqlVir is replicated manually every day to SqlVirDr.

We had to change the Virtual Server name of SqlVirDr to SqlVir so that all dot net applications accessing SqlVir could continue to access the database without changing the application string.

For that purpose I deleted the computer name SqlVir from the domain and its IP 10.1.1.6 from DNS. Then I went to the failover cluster manager of SqlVIrDr right clicked the Sql services selected the properties and changed the DNS name from SqlVirDr to SqlVir.The applications then could access the data. However when I changed the network IP address from 10.1.1.12 to 10.1.1.6 the Sql services was found to be down.

Perhaps the procedure I followed in deleting the computer name from domain and the IP from DNS was wrong. What exactly is the steps that I should follow to achieve the above objective.

SQL Security :: Rename Clustered Instance And Change Its IP Address?

Apr 22, 2015

We have an Sql Server 2008R2 Clustered production instance by name 'ProdVir' configured in 2 nodes(Active-passive) withWIndows Server 2008 R2. We also have another clustered instance as disaster recovery by name 'VirDr' configured again in another 2 nodes of Windows Server 2008 R2. Every day morning there is mainatenace plan which backups all the database in production and another maintenace plan in the disaster recovery server 'VirDr' which restores the backups into the VirDr instance.

I would like to know that in an eventuality of a disaster in the clustered production instance of 'ProdVir'. could we rename the the instance VirDr(meant for disaster recovery) to ProdVir and also change the Ip addresses accordingly so that the application programs do not have to change the details for the datasource in the connection strings.

DB Engine :: How To Convert Unique Clustered Index Into Clustered Primary Key To Use With Change Tracking

SQL 2012 :: Clustered SSAS Unable To Connect To Named Instance (instance Not Found On Server)

Mar 20, 2014

I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.

I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.

I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.

Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?

Change IP Address In A String

Apr 18, 2013

We got data from a dns server that looks like:

some columns.... |121.12.250.2.somestring......|

The ip address should look like 2.250.12.121:

We could use charindex, substring and len to cut the 4 parts of the ip and rebuild it in the right format.

Starts with
SELECT
CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn)
,LEFT(mycolumn, CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn) - 1) as part_four_of_ip
,CHARINDEX('.', SUBSTRING(mycolumn,CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn) - 1),len(mycolumn)
as position_of_second_dot
........ and so on.....

This will cause an awful long code. How to shorten that code?

Change Listening IP Address

May 31, 2008

Hello,

I have an installation of SQL Server Express 2005 installed on a Windows 2003 server. Through the forums on the board I have been able to turn on and make sure that port 1433 and port 1434 are turned on and listening. However, both ports show that they are listening on IP address 0.0.0.0. and I need for port 1433 to either listen on the server's main IP address or at the very least on 127.0.0.1. I have set them to enabled in the Configuration manager but they still don't appear to be listening on either of those IP addresses. Could some one tell me if there's another configuration change I might need to make?

Thank you in advance.

Cluster IP Address Change And Delay

May 27, 2007

Hi all,I have recently changed IP addresses on my MS SQL cluster (the new IPaddresses belongs to a different network). Both physical node's IPaddresses and resource's IP addresses have been changed.Everything seems to work fine. The cluster is up and respondingnormally. The resources failover to another node when needed correctly. However, I have noticed that the time it takes for the resource tofailover to another node is much longer than in the past (before IPaddresses change). I have noticed that "Network Name" is the resourcetype that causes the delay. Could you please advise if there issomething that I overlooked and needs to be changed.updated as well, sothat groups fail over faster? Thanks,Aleu

Renaming A Clustered SQL Instance

Nov 22, 2007

We are in the process of migrating our databases from one pair of Servers running SQL Server 2000 using a Failover Cluster to another pair.

Unfortunately, we have some programs that are hard-coded to the existing instance and it will take time I don't have at this time to rewrite those programs.

Our old Clustered SQL Server is named SQLCluster and the new one is named SQLCluster2

We have backed up and restored the databases themselves, but cannot seem to rename the new SQL Server Cluster to SQLCluster.

Is there a way to do this?

'til later,
Scott

Reporting Services :: How To Change Email Address - Sent From

Sep 21, 2015

I just moved our SSRS server from one machine to another. It was sending our report emails from a service account. So when my end users get the emailed report it was from a service account (reports@blah.com) .

Now that I moved the DB to another server - the reports get emailed successfully - but they are being sent from my email address!

I have checked the rsreportserver config file. I also checked in the report server smtp setup and they both show the service account. I even checked the subscription owners and accounts.

SSRS is using my account, but I can't find where it's getting it from. Where else can I look?

Security Question - SQL Server 2005 Express - List Of Allowed IP Address's

Aug 2, 2007

 Hi All,

I have noticed in the database logs that someone is trying to log
into our SQL Server express databases, is there a way of allowing only IP
address on a list to access the database. We really only need the local machine
and the office using SQL Express management studio to access the database.

I would appreciate any help sometimes the database runs very
slow and we do not know what is causing this.

We are running server 2003 and SQL Server express.

Thanks in advance.

Analysis :: Uninstall Clustered Instance From Node

Feb 19, 2015

I've installed SSAS 2012 as a failover cluster instance on a 2-node Windows 2012 R2 cluster.  All was fine in that regard but I now need to change the instance name so am going about the process of uninstalling and re-installing.  I've successfully removed the second node from the configuration using the "Remove cluster node" wizard from the Setup options, but when it comes to removing it from the final node I'm getting the error "the cluster group **** could not be moved from node x to node 'null'".  At this point the uninstall fails and the cluster resource remains in cluster administrator.  It's obviously done some work/damage because the service won't start now, but it's left in limbo land where I can't do anything with it.

Is there a manual way of removing the instance to overcome this issue (file deletions, registry entry deletions etc.)?

Installing Second Instance To SQL 2005 Clustered Installation

Mar 19, 2008

I will be installing a second SQL 2005 instance on an existing SQL 2005 clustered installation. We've added a set of disks for the new instance. My question is, will the existing clustered instance need to be taken offline for the installation, or will the nodes need to be rebooted after installing the new instance?

I haven't been able to confirm this on MS website or by Googling.

I understand we need to ensure no one is logged in to the remote nodes during the install as well.

Thank you

SQL 2012 :: Clustered Instances And Security

Jan 5, 2015

Is it possible for a clustered instance of SQL2012 to have 2 network names ?

Reason: I need to segregate admin access to a clustered instance so that the admins and SSMS connect via a different IP address than the application. I know I can block SSMS access via application-level firewalls, but ideally the application would connect to CLUSTER1INSTANCE01 on , say, 10.192.5.5, and the admins would connect to CLUSTER1ADMININSTANCE01 on 172.168.2.2, and they'd be the same instance, just using different names and IPs

SQL Server 2008 :: Change IP Address Of Failover Cluster Instances

Mar 9, 2011

IF you need to change the IP Address of a SQL Server Failover Cluster instance, here is the steps:

1. Open up Failover Cluster manager.
2. Expand the MS Cluster Instance that your SQL Cluster instance resides on.
3. Expand Services and applications.
4. Select the SQL Server Service.
5. In the main window pane (Middle Screen), you should see your SQL Server Cluster name, expand the plus to the left of it.
6. Under your SQL Server Cluster name, you should now see an 'IP address' section, right click on it and go to properties.
7. In the properties pane, you can change your IP address by entering a static IP.....or assigning a DHCP enabled IP.

SQL 2012 :: Failover Clustered Instance With Availability Groups

Oct 22, 2014

Approach 1:

Prod - shared storage between server 1 and 2
Server1: clustered SQL instance with availability group as primary
Server2: Passive server for clustered instance of PROD

DR - shared storage between server 1 and 2
Server1: Clustered SQL instance with availability group as replica
Server2: Passive server for clustered instance of DR

Approach 2: Using replicated SAN
Prod -
Server 1: Standalone instance with availability group as Primary
Server 2:Standalone instance with availability group as replica

DR -
Server 1: Offline until Disk group 1 (Prod server 1) has been broken and brought online at DR
Server 2: Offline until Disk group 2 (Prod server 2) has been broken and brought online at DR

Both these approaches will work wont they? I have only built and played with normal availability groups across servers, not mixing it with clustered instance replicated SAN

Replication In Clustered Environement - Security Issue

Nov 16, 2007

Hello,

Not sure if this question belongs here in the Setup & Upgrade section but here is the problem.

When installing replication in a non clustered environment, the Sql replication jobs run fine with the windows login provided (this login has access to the snapshot folder and has the proper roles. All the log reader, distributer and subscriber agents work fine)

When installing replication in a windows (MS) clustered environment, the agents running under the same login and same privilages dont work. It seems like there is something wrong with the proxy account and the ability of sql to access disk resources using this account. The only workaround is to go to the agent jobs, change the login under which they work from the proxy account to an actual windows account.

Has anyone come across this issue? I am forced to use the sql agent account and running the replication agents under way more privilages than I would like to.

TIA

Change Subnet And IP On Clustered Servers

According to Microsoft, if you need to change the subnet for the clustered servers, you will need to either edit the registry or reinstall virtual SQL Server.

Does any one know which registry key(s) store the subnet information? I was reviewing the clustered key but was able to find the key for the IP address only.

Setup And Upgrade :: Cannot Create Database Object Alert On Clustered Instance

Aug 25, 2015

We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue.  We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:

Msg 14262, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_verify_performance_condition, Line 52
The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.

Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.

We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s.  In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there.  Is this a bug?  Is there a CU?

SQL Security :: Cannot Connect To Local Instance

Sep 25, 2015

I have verified that the following services ARE running.SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)SQL Server Browser SQL Server VSS Writer. This one however will not start ... For some reason it starts then automatically turns off.SQL Server Agent (SQLEXPRESS).When I try to connect using my <machine name>/instance  and Windows Authentication I get the following error ...

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)".The connection specified in the "Connect to Server" box was working perfectly fine before I upgraded. I thought it might have been my Norton 360 Premier but I uninstalled it.I AM having issues with the adapter frequently dropping the internet connection but I just disconnect and reconnect and that resolves itself. The other technique I tried was to replace the server name with the IP address ... <192.168.0.22>/Instance ... This actually seemed to find the SQL Server but rejected the Windows Authentication ...

"Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication." I have several databases on here and would hate to have to reinstall SQL Server and manually hook them back up.
