Feb 2, 2000We have a SQL Server 7.0 SP1 NT 4 SP5 that has 40 or so clients connecting to it via a software package using NT Authentication. It was noticed that in Enterprise MGR, in Current activity panel under Network Address that all 40 or so clients do not show there individual MAC address, there are 3 different addresses, one does appear to be a client that is repeated for several other clients, one appears to be a network hub and the third one we have not determined what it is. These are all WIN 95 clients. When we use NT Workstation to connect to this SQL Server with Query Analyzer it does show the correct MAC address. Any ideas on what is wrong or where to start? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

When i am trying to configure Mirroring .i am getting the below error.
The server network address "TCP://RDEEPA:5022" can not be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and reissue the command. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418)
. TCP/IP and Name pipe connection is enabled in both principle and mirror server configuration.

Security Question - SQL Server 2005 Express - List Of Allowed IP Address's

I have noticed in the database logs that someone is trying to log
into our SQL Server express databases, is there a way of allowing only IP
address on a list to access the database. We really only need the local machine
and the office using SQL Express management studio to access the database.
I would appreciate any help sometimes the database runs very
slow and we do not know what is causing this.
We are running server 2003 and SQL Server express.

I need to refresh my cube daily and once this processed is done, i will update in ETL table with lastcubeprocessedtime in my timestamp column. Actually i am using IBM db2 provider since my ETL table resides in IBM DB2 source.
In my first task i am using script task where i will check whether my timestamp column value is NULL or not.
I am getting error like "The script threw an exception : keyword not supported: 'network port'." when this script task executes.
Moreover i am getting another error like "The execution succeeded, but the number of error raised(1) reached the maximum allowed(1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number of specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix this errors." For this error i have changed MaximumErrorCount value from 1 to 100 in dataflow task.
Can anyone tell me what might be the problem for these two errors?

i have problem that it used 1434 UDP port to increase bandwidth traffic by sending many UDP packages to many IP which created randomly by SQLServer2000 when it find another SQLServer2000 after sending packages again new server start sending UDP Package to other.
then no one cant connect to Server.
i had a worm like this 2 years ago.
but this bug or worm could not be detected by any anti virus or any SP like SP4.
How can i solve this problem ?

SQL Security :: How To Change IP Address Of Clustered Instance
May 7, 2015In our lab we have 2 clustered instance of Sql server 2018R2 as follows
Virtual Server Name
IP SqlVir 10.1.1.6
SqlVirDr 10.1.1.12
The Data is SqlVir is replicated manually every day to SqlVirDr.
We had to change the Virtual Server name of SqlVirDr to SqlVir so that all dot net applications accessing SqlVir could continue to access the database without changing the application string.
For that purpose I deleted the computer name SqlVir from the domain and its IP 10.1.1.6 from DNS. Then I went to the failover cluster manager of SqlVIrDr right clicked the Sql services selected the properties and changed the DNS name from SqlVirDr to SqlVir.The applications then could access the data.However when I changed the network IP address from 10.1.1.12 to 10.1.1.6 the Sql services was found to be down.
Perhaps the procedure I followed in deleting the computer name from domain and the IP from DNS was wrong.What exactly is the steps that I should follow to achieve the above objective.

Apr 22, 2015We have an Sql Server 2008R2 Clustered production instance by name 'ProdVir' configured in 2 nodes(Active-passive) withWIndows Server 2008 R2. We also have another clustered instance as disaster recovery by name 'VirDr' configured again in another 2 nodes of Windows Server 2008 R2. Every day morning there is mainatenace plan which backups all the database in production and another maintenace plan in the disaster recovery server 'VirDr' which restores the backups into the VirDr instance.
I would like to know that in an eventuality of a disaster in the clustered production instance of 'ProdVir'. could we rename the the instance VirDr(meant for disaster recovery) to ProdVir and also change the Ip addresses accordingly so that the application programs do not have to change the details for the datasource in the connection strings.
Database Security On A Local Network
Jan 14, 2007This is regarding general protection of a database hosted on a network. I am developing a database application for my college library using VB.NET, that will reside on a network.
For some reasons, I did not want to hardcode the Database location in the application. Instead, when a user logs in, he can choose the database location using a folder browser control, if the location has changed.
Now, I realize that for this, I have to put the database in a shared folder, which makes it quite vulnerable. Having pondered over the problem for sometime, a solution that comes to my mind is to place a Text file in the same shared folder that always contains the correct path of the database. When a user chooses that folder, I will read the actual path of the database from the text file, and move the database to a non-shared folder.
I haven't yet implemented this approach, but felt it better to consult someone before. So, would this approach work, and is it a good idea.
For information purposes, I consider it important to mention that the database is in MS Access. I know this is not a place for discussing it, but this is a general security concern. So, I thought
people would not mind answering it....

I knw that we can go to the servers network utility & see it there in the TCP /IP ... but i dont have access to that , neither do i have access to the error logs that tell me , on which port is SQL Server listening to

Hello All,
We have default instance "MSSQLSERVER" with Port number 1433. We Installed another Instance "MGMT" on the same windows server, it came as same Port number "1433".
We decided to Change the Port number for Instance "MGMT".
1. We changed the port number for "MGMT" to like "1234"
2. After the change we did telnet to "MGMT" Instance with "1433", it worked.
3. Then we changed the Port number for Instance "MSSQLSERVER" also to like "4321".
4. After change of these setting and followed with rules framed in link as said: http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3689846
5. Now we did telnet with changed port number, it works fine.
6. We can not do telnet with Port number 1433 for both Instances "MSSQLSERVER" and "MGMT".. This is fine, what we want, and what we intent to do...
Question to MVP OR SQL Gurus:
A) If you want to change port number to Second Instance, shall we need to change for Default Instance?
B) How the port numbers will be configured? please advice.

it connects when
rda.InternetUrl = http://ip/rdadir/sqlcesa30.dll ,
but no when
rda.InternetUrl = http://ip:81/rdadir/sqlcesa30.dll .

Connecting To SQL Server On A Different Port
Nov 27, 2006I have a server running SQL Server 2005 Dev behind a firewall that blocks the default SQL Server port. So, I changed the port that SQL server uses to another port. How do I connect to the database instance with SQL Server Management Studio. I have tried:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxMSSQLSERVER
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:portMSSQLSERVER
name.of.machineMSSQLSERVER
On all of these, I get an error 25 - Connection string is not valid. I have the surface area configured correctly (i.e. named pipes and TCP/IP are both turned on), and the sql server browser is running. I can ping the server just fine, and when I go to GRC.com and do a shields up report it lists my port of choice as being open.
What am I missing?
I also set the native client configuration's default port to the port I want to connect to, and it appears that that didn't work either.
Ideas? I would like to get this running ASAP.

Jun 7, 2007I tried creating an alias to the server to get it to connect to analyze the server but it will not recognize the SQL 2000 server as a valid server to analyze. I can use the alias to connect in EM or SSMS. Any ideas? The server is not clustered and is at SP4. I've connected to several others in my environment but this one is causing me grief!

Mar 17, 2004I am unable to access the default port 1433 on my SQL 2003 server. There is no firewall. I run telnet <ip> <port> and get "Connection failed" which explains my inability to connect to the server for weeks. I have being unable to connect to the server after I uninstalled sql 2000 and reinstalled it on my 2003 server. Some of the things I have checked is Network Configuration in EM. Named Pipes and TCP/IP is installed with port set to 1433. HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftMSSQLServerClientSuperSocketNetLibTcpDefaultPort port is set to 1433. Is there anything I need to configure on the server side to have the default sql server port enabled.

How Can I Get The Port Of A Named Instance Of SQL Server
Sep 14, 2004Thanks for Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 that make the security much stronger. However, besides the invisible benefit so far, I have become the victim of this security policy.
I have several named instances of SQL 7/2000 installed in my machine. They are not visible out of the Microsoft new fire wall. I need to access the instances from outside the fire wall, but I don't know which port I should open for the instances.
From SQL online, the default instance of SQL server is connected through TCP/IP by default port 1433. I could successful open that port and made the default instance visible to outside. However, the port 1433 doesn't work for the named instances. SQL online said, the port for named instance is dynamically (by default) chosen the first time the instance is started. So, actually, I have no way to know the port.
Is there anyway that I can check the database or somewhere to get the port that is used by the named instance?

I'm working on a school project on web and mobile applications, and had decided to use MS SQL Server for my backend database.
However, after I've installed MS SQL Server 2000, I ran a port scan and I couldn't find the server running on any ports (MySQL is running on my port 3306, but I guess it doesn't matter) Can something drop some hints on how to debug the problem?

Apr 2, 2015I have changed SQL Server from default port to another port number. All appears fine. If SQL Server is restarted it is all fine, however, when the server is restarted SQL Server fails to start. If you then log into the server and manually start the services they start just fine. So, it appears that something blocks the port or uses the port upon server startup for a few seconds. The AV folks say that they are not blocking ports and that it AV service actually starts 15 seconds after the SQL start failure.So, the question becomes is how can I track down what is blocking or using that port?

Firewall Port Forwarding To SQL Server

Is there any concerns or problems with forward a port to SQL server
from our internet firewall so that you can access the databases over the internet? Is it a standard practice to do this in order to remotely access the SQL server. Or is there a better way to do this? Also, if it is ok to do this are any things you need to do to enhance your security from vulnerabilities being open to the internet.

Mar 14, 2007When I change the tcp/ip port to anything other than 1433 my SSIS nor DTS packages run successfully. Does the tcp/ip port have to be on 1433 for the SSIS or DTS packages to run successfully?
