SQL Server 2000 Distinct

hi all, SQL server newbie trying to get what seems to me a simple set of results but has turned into the cause of hair loss and temperment. One table tblWebHits, two fields - TimeOfHit and ObjectID. I need to get a distinct set of 4 ObjectID from the table ordered by TimeOfHit desc. I have tried subqueries using in, having, exists etc all without any success. Im hoping that someone who knows what they are doing can help out a sql muppet. Cheers
P.S Ive just noticed that Ive been given a white belt status in the forum....generous, braces would be more appropriate for my lack of nouse!

Hi, I have the following script segment which is failing:
CREATE TABLE #LatLong (Latitude DECIMAL, Longitude DECIMAL, PRIMARY KEY (Latitude, Longitude))
INSERT INTO #LatLong SELECT DISTINCT Latitude, Longitude FROM RGCcache
When I run it I get the following error: "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__#LatLong__________7CE3D9D4'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.#LatLong'."
Im not sure how this is failing as when I try creating another table with 2 decimal columns and repeated values, select distinct only returns distinct pairs of values.
The failure may be related to the fact that RGCcache has about 10 million rows, but I can't see why.
Any ideas?

I need to run a SELECT DISTINCT query acrossmultiple fields, but I need to add another field that is NON-DISTINCTto my record set. Here is my query:SELECT DISTINCT lastname, firstname, middleinitial, address1,address2, city, state, zip, age, genderFROM gpresultsWHERE age>='18' and serviceline not in ('4TH','4E','4W')and financialclass not in ('Z','X') and age not in('1','2','3','4','5','6','7','8','9','0')and (CAST (ADMITDATE AS DATETIME) >= DATEDIFF(day, 60, GETDATE()))ORDER BY zipThis query runs perfect. No problems whatsoever. However, I need toalso include another field called "admitdate" that should be treatedas NON-DISTINCT. How do I add this in to the query?I've tried this but doesn't work:SELECT admitdateFROM (SELECT DISTINCT lastname, firstname, middleinitial, address1,address2, city, state, zip, age, gender from gpresults)WHERE age>='18' and serviceline not in ('4TH','4E','4W')and financialclass not in ('Z','X') and age not in('1','2','3','4','5','6','7','8','9','0')and (CAST (ADMITDATE AS DATETIME) >= DATEDIFF(day, 60, GETDATE()))ORDER BY zipThis has to be simple but I do not know the syntax to accomplishthis. Thanks

Hello,
I have written a small asp.net application, which keeps record of the proposals coming from the branch offices of a bank in a tableCREATEd as a TABLE Proposals ( ID smallint identity(7,1), BranchID char(5), Proposal_Date datetime )
This app also calculates the total number of proposals coming from a specific branch in a given date bySELECTing COUNT(BranchID) FROM Proposals WHERE BranchID=@prmBranchID AND Proposal_Date=@prmDateand prints them in a table (my target table).
This target table has as many rows as the result of the "SELECT COUNT( DISTINCT Proposal_Date ) FROM Proposals"and excluding the first column which displays those DISTINCT Proposal_Dates, it also has as many columns as the result of the"SELECT DISTINCT BranchID FROM Proposals". This target table converts the DateTime values ToShortDateString so that we are able to see comfortably which branch office has sent how many proposals in a given day.
So far so good, and everything works fine except one thing:
Certain DateTime values in the Proposals table which are of the same day but of different hours (for ex: 11.11.2005 08:30:45 and11.11.2005 10:45:30) cause some trouble in the target table, where "SELECT COUNT( DISTINCT Proposal_Date ) FROM Proposals" is executed, because (as you might already guess) it displays two identical dates in ShortDateString form, and this doesn't make much sense (i.e. it causes redundant rows)
What I need to do is to get a result like (in a neat fashion :)
"SELECT COUNT( DISTINCT Proposal_Date ) <<DISTINCT ONLY IN THE DAYS AND NOT IN HOURS OR MINUTES OR SECONDS>> FROM Proposals"
So, how to do it in a suitable way?
Thanks in advance.

I am working with a VIEW inside of SQL Server. I want
to SELECT DISTINCT just the date from a date/time
field. (MM/DD/YYYY). And then I want to be able to
use BETWEEN to requery the resulting data from that
view. So to get rid of the time, I am using the
Convert function (I'll be glad to do it a different way if anyone knows one):
SELECT DISTINCT Order_id, CONVERT(char(10),
Customer_Order_table.date_order_placed, 101) AS
order_date
From MyTable
The trouble is that when I go to requery the data from
a second query, my between statement doesn't seem to
work properly and I don't get any records returned.
It's almost like the resulting data isn't being
considered a date or something like that. Does anyone
have any suggestions on this?
Thanks,
Eron

Hi, I think you can do this in oracle but I'm trying to figure a way to do it in ms sql.. I need to select a distinct combination of columns, like so...
select distinct(ItemName,ItemData,FID) from tblSIFups
Does anyone know how to achieve that? I have multiple data where I shouldn't and I don't have any control over the application so I need to clean it this way.
thanks, nicki

Insert into TableB

values(@UserName, 'Test Project', getDate(), distinct Col1 from Table1, 'Test Comments', distinct col1+ 'TR' from TableA)
How can I accomplish the above. I need to insert distinct column from TableA to RecordProcess and col1+'Tr' to recordprocessExt.I can do it with cursor. I don't know any other way.
Also, there are other columns in Table A. I am using sql server 2005.

I have an UPDATE statement that joins two table by SendId. One table, I'll call it T1, has a clustered index on SendId ASC. The other table I will call T2 also has a clustered index on SendID ASC. All the columns from T2 are used to update T1. The execution plan shows a Clustered index scan on T2 and a Clustered Index Seek on T1 going into a Nested Loops inner join. Immediately following is a Distinct Sort that is done on SendId ASC. Why the Distinct SORT if the tables are already ordered by SendID?

I am trying to create a query that outputs the following data from multiple tables. Here is an example of the raw data right now
Date | MachineNumber | TestName
---------------------------------------
1/1/2015 | 500 | Something
1/1/2015 | 500 | Something
1/1/2015 | 500 | Something
1/1/2015 | 500 | Something
1/1/2015 | 510 | NewTest
1/1/2015 | 510 | NewTest
1/1/2015 | 510 | NewTest
1/1/2015 | 620 | Test#1
Here is the desired counted output, I would like to pull distinct Date, MachineNumber, TestName and then count how many times they occur in the raw data form.I do need to perform a case on the date because right now its in a datetime format and I only need the date.
Date | MachineNumber | TestName | TestOccuranceCount
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1/1/2015 | 500 | Something | 4
1/1/2015 | 510 | NewTest | 3
1/1/2015 | 620 | Test#555 | 1
I am pulling three columns with the same names from 8 different tables. What I need to display the date, machine & test name and count how many times a test was run on a machine for that date. I have a feeling this can be handled by SSAS but haven't built an analysis cube yet because I am unfamiliar with how they work. I was wondering if this is possible in a simple query. I tried to set something up in a #Temp table. Problem is the query takes forever to run because I am dealing with 1.7 Million rows. Doing an insert into #temp select columnA, columnB, columnC from 8 different tables takes a bit.

I have a table with PO#,Days_to_travel, and Days_warehouse fields. I take the distinct Days_in_warehouse values in the table and insert them into a temp table. I want a script that will insert all of the values in the Days_in_warehouse field from the temp table into the Days_in_warehouse_batch row in table 1 by PO# duplicating the PO records until all of the POs have a record per distinct value.
Example:
Temp table: (Contains only one field with all distinct values in table 1)
Days_in_warehouse
20
30
40
Table 1 :
PO# Days_to_travel Days_in_warehouse Days_in_warehouse_batch
1 10 20
2 5 30
3 7 40
Updated Table 1:
PO# Days_to_travel Days_in_warehouse Days_in_warehouse_batch
1 10 20 20
1 10 20 30
1 10 20 40
2 5 30 20
2 5 30 30
2 5 30 40
3 7 40 20
3 7 40 30
3 7 40 40
How can I update Table 1 to see desired results?

One of my varchar columns in a table has multiple key words enclosed in a pattern of special characters.
Eg: William Shakespeare was an English [##poet##], [##playwright##], and [##actor##], widely regarded as the greatest [##writer##] in the English language and the world's pre-eminent [##dramatist##]. He is often called England's national [##poet##] and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 [##sonnets##], two long narrative [##poems##], and a few other [##verses##], of which the authorship of some is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other [##playwright##].
I need to write to query to find all distinct key words that are enclosed within [## and ##]. My query should yield the following results from the string in the example above
[##actor##]
[##dramatist##]
[##playwright##] -- 2 occurrances, but I need it only once in my result set
[##poems##]
[##poet##] -- 2 occurrances, but I need it only once in my result set
[##sonnets##]
[##verses##]
[##writer##]
I need to run this on a large table, so I am looking for the best possible way to minimize any performance issues.
Just give you sample code, I have provided below 2 separate snippets, one with table variable and another with temp table.
DECLARE @MyTable TABLE (MyString VARCHAR (8000))
INSERT @MyTable VALUES ('William Shakespeare was an English [##poet##], [##playwright##], and [##actor##], widely regarded as the greatest [##writer##] in the English language and the world''s pre-eminent [##dramatist##]. He is often called England''s national [##poet##] and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 [##sonnets##], two long narrative [##poems##], and a few other [##verses##], of which the authorship of some is uncertain.
[code].....

Basically I'm running a number of selects, using unions to write out each select query as a distinct line in the output. Each line needs to be multiplied by -1 in order to create an offset balance (yes this is balance sheet related stuff) for each line. Each select will have a different piece of criteria.
Although I have it working, I'm thinking there's a much better or cleaner way to do it (I use the word better loosely)
Example:
SELECT 'Asset', 'House', TotalPrice * -1
FROM Accounts
WHERE AvgAmount > 0
UNION
SELECT 'Balance', 'Cover', TotalPrice
FROM Accounts
WHERE AvgAmount > 0
What gets messy here is having to write a similar set of queries where the amount is < 0 or = 0
I'm thinking something along the lines of building a table function contains all the descriptive text returning the relative values based on the AvgAmount I pass to it.

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

I've created a small company database where the tables reside in a SQLServer database. I'm using Access 2000 forms for a front end.I've got a System DSN set-up to SQL Server and am using links withinAccess 2000 to get to the SQL Server tables. My forms worked fine until I made a few minor changes to the databaseschema on SQL Server (e.g. added a foreign key, or added a column). After that, all the links break - I click on a table link and get anerror msg like "invalid object name."Deleting the links after a schema change and re-adding the links seemedto fix the problem. The forms I'd already created seemed to work fineafter re-creating the links. But then I got more advanced with my forms. I have it set up so thatfor certain entry fields, the combobox gets populated with values froma table (the description appears in the drop-down and the correspondingprimary key value gets populated in the table). I created a number offorms using this technique, entered data, and everything worked fine.Made a small schema change and it broke everything -- not the actualtable links, but the functionality for the drop-downs. My values nolonger appeared, and this was true for forms that accessed tables whoseschemas did not change. This is driving me nuts. Is there any way to keep my forms frombreaking each time I make a small schema change?Thanks.- Dana

We have a SQL Server 7.0 system in NT 4.0 environment. We upgraded our users to Access 2000 and started to work with this. Now we installed a new
server which is Windows 2000 based and the domain is different from
the SQL servers domain. We then installed Access 2000 on Windows 2000
to use with terminal server. But I noticed that there was a problem
with the program. I then looked at the program which was written on Access 2000 and saw that the tables and views can't be seen. The program runs but
I can't see the views and tables. Another thing is access disconects from SQL Server when I want to see the tables. So what can be the problem.
In one part there is an Access 2000 on Windows 2000 server. On the other part SQL Server 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0. And Access can't see the tables in SQL server.
