SQL Server 2000 - Run Transaction Log Backup Using Windows CMD File

Mar 19, 2007

How I can run a SQL Server Transaction Log Backup using a Windows CMD File.  It's that posible?  Anyone know the command or how do this?

We already have a application monitoring our SQL databases.  Everytime the transaction log get full, it sends us an alert.  Would be better if our application repair the problem itself, executing a command (Windows CMD File).

I'm not a expert using SQL databases or MS DOS Prompt commands.

Any help will be appreciate.

Can Windows 2003 Server Backup Utility Be Used To Backup A SQL 2000 Dbase

Dec 28, 2007

Windows 2003 backup utility uses the shadow copy option that allows it to copy open files.
Therefore, can I use this utility to backup the .mdf and .ldf files for my SQL 2000 database?
I can then attach the .mdf files if I need to restore the database to another server.
Can anyone tell me if this is safe? I've tried it and it worked but I'm worried there maybe some lurking danger in using this approach.

File Copy To Windows 2000 From NT Server Running Sql7

Jul 20, 2005

We are running SQL 7 on a Windows NT Server. If you copy a 25Mb filefrom this machine to a W2K server, the file copy takes over 5 minuteson a 100Mpbs switched network.Copying the same file to another NT server takes only seconds, andcopying the same file to the W2K server from the 2nd NT server, (whichis not running SQL) takes only seconds also.Has anyone any ideas as to why file copying between this machine and aW2K one will take so long. It is repliacted on 5 further w2K machines.

Distributed Transaction On Windows 2000 Professional

Jun 19, 2006

Just curious if anyone out there has had success running a Distributed Transaction on Windows 2000 Professional SP4 lately?

I have come to the conclusion that is is virutally impossible. I am running MSDE on a Win2k Pro machine and trying to run a distributed transaction via linked server and am getting the

"The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction."

error. Yes I have been scouring the web looking for answers and have implemented pretty much everything I have run accross... and Yes the MSDTC service is started on both machines... BTW: If I run the procedure on XP it works great!!!

I am wondering if anyone even uses Win2k Pro anymore let alone trying to run a distributed tarnsaction on the darn thing.

If anyone out there has it running let me know I would love to chat with you for a minute or two.

'transaction Log Backup' File Is Huge

May 19, 2007

Hello all,

I have inherited a SQL 2000 server, and am therefore an absolute beginner of SQL2000.

I know this has been covered before, but I don't know how to use the KB as I don't know how to run the commands/script.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272318/

I can no longer backup the SQL database because the 'transaction log backup' file is about 17GB. The SQL database is only about 2GB! The partition that it is backed up onto fills up every day.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Puskas

Vista Business ODBC/DSN To Remote Windows 2000 Server / SQL 2000

Oct 8, 2007

Hi,
Just upgraded some development desktops to Vista Business. However we need
to still connect to some older remote windows 2000/SQL 2000 servers.

Trying to setup an ODBC system DSN on our Vista Business local desktop we get the
following errors -

-START ERROR WINDOW-
Connection Failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 772
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen
(SECDoClientHandshake()0.
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 18
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SSL Security Error
-END ERROR WINDOW-

Any help greatly appreciated as this is stopping us from making
database/table connections etc. We've checked the firewall setup and all is well there.

PS - we can still connect fine using XP or windows 2000 desktops and their
local DSNs.

Windows 2000 Sp4 && SQL Server 2000 Causes Java Core Dump

This is crashing JVMs (multiple Sun versions and BEA also) in the Java VM frame (outside our code). This has just started recently - perhaps with the last set of patches? Has anyone else seen this or know what I could do to get more information? Could this be related to updates to named pipes?

Access 2000 On Windows 2000 Can't Interact With SQL Server 7.0

Mar 13, 2001

We have a SQL Server 7.0 system in NT 4.0 environment. We upgraded our users to Access 2000 and started to work with this. Now we installed a new
server which is Windows 2000 based and the domain is different from
the SQL servers domain. We then installed Access 2000 on Windows 2000
to use with terminal server. But I noticed that there was a problem
with the program. I then looked at the program which was written on Access 2000 and saw that the tables and views can't be seen. The program runs but
I can't see the views and tables. Another thing is access disconects from SQL Server when I want to see the tables. So what can be the problem.

In one part there is an Access 2000 on Windows 2000 server. On the other part SQL Server 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0. And Access can't see the tables in SQL server.

Transaction Log Backup On Server With Less HDD Space

Nov 29, 2007

Hi,

I started working in one company as a DBA where the Ex-DBA left the company long time back. So all the databases have huge transaction logs (50-80GB) in size. But the problem is-
1. HDD space on the m/c its only 45GB. When I ran TLog backup cmd on that m/c, the hdd space was started reducing around 1GB/min and in few minutes I saw hdd space left is only 15GB so I stopped cmd (It had completed only 37% of the backup).
Second time again I tried to take TLog backup on hdd placed on n/w path but again I saw it was eating local disk space very fast.

So my question is, Is it like when you take Tlog backup of size say 80GB it will use 80GB local hdd as a temporary storage?

2. For this I found 1 workaround- I took Full backup then I restored it on some other m/c, then shrun the log files to few MB's then I again took Full backup of this shrunk db and restored it on production.
Is this only solution to my problem(Very less space on production's local HDD)? If anyone knows better soln than this then plz suggest me.

Thanks in Advance.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Unable To Access Physical Server To Backup Transaction Log

Dec 5, 2014

I've recently started working with a public sector organisation who have 4 clustered sql instances that has 80% of it's db mirrored.

Looking at the transaction log - it seems that a transaction log backup is a good idea as the log is 4x larger than the data file. But I'm not allowed access to the physical server to check onto which drive I can create the trn. No RDP, no vmware - let's be honest I'm not even allowed to launch cmd line Also the Server Manager informs me "We will need to carefully look at database backups if you guys want to start doing these backups on box, as that will break our off box backup routine (it will screw the transaction chain)."

I don't understand how backing up the transaction log could break the "transaction chain"?

Connection Problem To Sql 2000 On Windows 2003 From Windows 95

Hi all,I have a Windows 2003 server, which is also a terminal server forapplication, with sql 2000 installed. My company has developed anapplication that uses SQL 2000 as its database. The application is aclient/server one. In each client computer there's a link to theapplication on the server. There is no problem with Windows 98,Windows 2000 pro, Windows xp pro clients, but the windows 95 onescannot log in to the database. The log of the application shows thefollowing error:connection error -2147467259. Cannot open database requested in login'database name'. Login fails.Till a week ago the application was running on a Windows 2000 serverwith SQL 2000 install and the W95 clients had no problem connecting tothe database, so my guess is the error has something to do withWindows 2003 server, but what'causing the error?I tried to install a newer version of MDAC (MDAC 2.5, the last versionof MDAC you can install on W95)but with no success. By the way W95clients have no problem accessing shared folder on the Windows 2003server.Any idea?ThanksMarino
