I just installed a SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 instance on a server with an existing SQL Server 2000 SP3 installation. (I need SQL Server 2005's INSERT from an EXEC capability). It's working great now except for one thing: I can't link any other SQL servers! I've already successfully added and queried a linked Oracle server, but attempting to add a linked SQL server gives me the following error, no matter which SQL provider I try to use:
Code Snippet
"The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Do you want to keep the linked server?"
Additional information:
--> An exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
--> Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SERVERNAME". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7302)
The technical details reveal the error source as "sp_testlinkedserver".
I've scoured the net and premier support for advice on this problem, but the little I found wasn't helpful. I've tried reinstalling the SQL Native Client, but it didn't help. I've tried uninstalling SQL Server 2005 Express completely (including management studio and native client), rebooting, and reinstalling everything, with no luck. The server (obviously) does not have a firewall enabled. I've tried stopping the SQL 2000 Server installed on the system, no help. If I create a test .UDL file on the system, pointing to any of the SQL servers I'm trying to link, clicking the "Test Connection" button returns successful. I'm also able to connect to and query the servers directly from the SQL 2005 Express Management Studio. I just can't add them as linked servers.
The server is running Windows 2003 SP1, SQL Server 2000 SP3, and SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 (the default "SQLExpress" named instance). I've tried setting up SQL 2005 Express to run under the network service account and under a domain account used by the other SQL 2000 servers.
From other SQL 2000 servers, I can connect and link to the SQL Server 2005 Express instance successfully. I can also successfully add linked SQL servers in SQL Server 2000 instance installed on the same server. Only adding linked SQL servers in 2005 Express seems to be broken.
Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm totally baffled. Thank you so much for any helpful advice.

Hi,
I am trying to create a linked server between 2 SQL Server 2005 boxes.
When I create the linked server I specify a login for the connection.
The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:
The test connection to the linked server failed
Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)
I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login.
The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.
Can anyone shed some light as to what may be the problem?
Thanks,

It is now a SQL2k Enterprise Edition with WIN2003 with 8GB memory. It was a SQL2k Enterprise Edition on Win2000 server with 4 GB memory. But query a linked server with no problem.
I have checked MS knowledge base but it is kind of related to SQL7.0 and linking to Oracle Database error 7302.

Hello All,
I am new to this forum and hope that some one can help me with this problem.
I know that in MS Access you can have a linked table in your databse such that as long a the like is not broken, it behaves similar to any other table in the database.
My problem is that I need to do the same thing for multiple databases that I have on a MS SQL Server that ALL currently have copies of the same table in common.
I wish to have a single table that they all share and have access to just link any other table that they currently have but is actually linked.
Can this be done?
And if so, then could someone please guide me in this?
My logic is that if MS Access can link tables then I could suspect that MS SQL Server should be able to also, but I could be wrong.
Thanks in advance,
Lonnie

The wizard created an Access Project which Ihave started to modify.However, I am also trying to get data from an AS/400. Specifically fora currency/exchange rate file. I only want ot copy the records sincethe last copy otherwise there are a vast number of records.I have created a linked server to the AS/400 within SQL Server, andcreated a view, within my specific database which allows me to look atall the data in the table.However, my problem is that I want a VB routine, in the AccessProject, which lets me copy out specic records from the view into atable within the SQL Server database. Hi,
I have a question to the SQL Server experts.
I have a kind of problem with an system that is trying to modify some records in a SQL Server 2K Database.
Server configuration:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
MDAC 2.81 SP2
SQL Server 2000 SP3
The error that I receive is:
Description [Timeout expired], NativeError [0] SQLState [HYT00], Source [Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server], Number [-2147217871]
It happens when I try to execute a store procedure that updates a record and is just with that procedure, there's no error when I execute procedure to insert rows.
I would feel so much thankful about any suggestions.

Hi All,
I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2000 database from my VB6 code. The SQL Server is having the setting ON to force all incoming connections to use SSL. It is using a valid certificate with the same name as FQDN of the server and has been provided by the security department in my organization. I have got my client code on my desktop.
I have installed the root CA certificate for the SSL certificate on DB server in my desktop's Trusted Root Certificates.
When I try to access the database from my .NET 2.0 code, it works fine. The .NET code gives an error if I remove the CA certificate from my desktop. This behaviour is as expected. I am using Encrypt=True setting in my code here although I dont think it is necessary when server is forcing all to use SSL anyway.
However, I have got some VB6 code as well on my desktop trying to connect to the same database. The code works fine if I dont use Encrypt=YES in my connection string here. This works fine even when I dont have Encrypt=YES and I have removed the root certificate from my desktop; which is strange because I expect it to give me an error like my .NET code as server is forcing all connections on SSL only.
But, if I do use Encrypt=YES in my connection string here, I am getting an error on conn.Open step. The exact message is Run-time error "-2147467259(80004005)":[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]SSL Security error. I get this error both when I have the certificate installed and when I dont have it. I have tried using FQDN of the server in my connection string instead of IP Address.
The connection string is : "Driver={SQL Server};Server=X.X.X.X;Database=dbname;UID=sa;PWD=;Encrypt=YES".
The code I have is pasted here;
Dim conn As New ADODB.Connection
conn.ConnectionString = GetConnectString
conn.Open
The MDAC version on my desktop is 2.81.1117.0
Please advise.
Thanks and Regards,

I am trying to make a simple connection to my sql server, but am getting an error. I am not sure why it says SQL Server 2005 in the error as we use 2000. I have found others to have the problem on the web, but have found no answers. One person said the sql connection worked when he downgraded to 1.1; however, I'd like to avoid that. Here is my code:
<%@Import Namespace="System.Data.SqlClient" %>
<script runat="server">
Sub Page_Load()
Dim conNorthwind As SqlConnection
conNorthwind = New SqlConnection("Server=1CDRSRV4; uid=username; pwd=password; database=Northwind")
conNorthwind.Open()
End Sub
</script>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head runat="server">
<title>Untitled Page</title>
</head>
<body>
Connection Opened!
</body>
</html>
here is my error:

Hello All,
I am not sure what is going on, but ever since I installed my ASP.NET shopping cart I keep getting the following error message in my Event Viewer under Application.
If anyone out there has any idea why this is happening please let me know because it seems to be crashing my other sites on my web server.
I have a Web Server which connects to a separate SQL 2000 Server. This error message is on my Web Server.
Thank you all in advance for your help!
