SQL Server 2000 Timeout On SELECT Query

The SQL statement below works without the WHERE statement but as soon as i try to use the where it stops working, I think it has something to do with the HAVING statement in the vwMultiAE2 view but I am not sure.It did the same thing when I had it in one view. Hi all,I am doing some large updates,that may update 10,000 plus rows.This works fine when I execute the SQL directlyin Query Analyzer.If I set the timeout on my VB connection to 0 (zero)the connection should not time out????But it does.If I set the time out to a high value, say 1200,I get the same problem well within 1200 seconds.Also, I am getting the problem that the log fills up,but it is set to auto grow????Any ideas would be appreciated.ThanksGreg

Hi all,
I have to write a select query which need some logic to be implemented.
Query is like

In the above query there will be days row for that employee if active is true else there won't be any data for that emp in the tbl_shdsheet
So how can i write queery for this.

I have been trying to do a query(view) in Enterprise Manger and QueryAnalyzer with a timeout result everytime. In EM in happens in about30 seconds and in QA it happens in about 45 seconds.I am running the query directly on a W2003SBS server with SQL Server2000 (V 8.00.2039 )running on the server.The message is simply[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expiredI have set all the time out properties I have seen and that have beenmentioned in these forums to no avail.I have tried rewriting several of these queries also to no avail.I am working with a database of 140 million records and have indexedall the pertinent fields.I have seen some info up here about a bug in SQL 2000 that impacts EMand not QA (Q247070), but I can't QA to work either. I seem to haveno impact on the length of the timeout. The query is not thatcomplicated, but does go against 140M records. I should be able toset thetimeout longer to let this run.Any ideas.Thanks,Brad

Background: We have an Asp.Net page where you enter a serial number (for a part my company manufactures), and it performs some updates to the data. Before it does, it does some simple selects for validation.Problem: Testers reported that the page will work fine for a while (5 minutes?), but then suddenly start throwing command timeout exceptions. I discovered that the timeouts always occur at the same validation query. Other queries are executed before this one, and they never timeout. The query is nothing fancy. It joins five tables, has a simple where clause, and selects a count of the records. It runs in Management Studio in under one second. The system is in a development environment under very little load. There's never a valid reason for the timeout. The where clause is parameterized, and the query itself is stored in our data access layer as a string. We execute it using SqlHelper's ExecuteScalar method. There's truly nothing remarkable about the query or how we execute it.After some playing with the page for a bit, and getting lots of successes, I'll get the timeout myself, and it will continue to occur for each additional attempt. If I let the system "rest" for a period of time (a couple of hours), it will be working again.The fun bit: When the system is in "timeout mode", if I go into our data access layer and add a single space character anywhere in the command text (where it has no semantic meaning) the timeouts go away. Take the extra space out, timeout again. Put it back in, no timeout. I did this (jaw agape) for a dozen times and the result was always the same!In previous attempts at debugging this problem, it would be in "timeout mode" and I'd make a semantic change to the query (hoping to fix it) and the problem would go away. I'd tell the testers it was fixed just to have them come back a day later and say it's not. That's what made me finally try the whitespace idea. Changing the string itself made the problem go away temporarily. What I do understand about this:SQL Server will cache the execution plan of a text query, and re-use it on successive queries. It probably caches it based on some hash of the query (just a guess), and changing one character would cause the hashing function to generate a different hash, hence it's a "different" query to SQL Server. So it won't use the same cached execution plan, and will make a new one. If the original execution plan was somehow borked, then that would explain why the timeouts return once I put the query back to it's exact original form. ('Cause it will use that same broken execution plan). This would also explain why letting the system rest would alleviate the problem. I imagine the execution plan eventually expires from the cache.One more thing: If I stop using SqlHelper, and contruct the SqlCommand myself, I can specify a command timeout. If I set it really high, it will eventually complete the query. It will just never do it within the default command timeout period. What exactly is going on is a mystery to me. I thought of a fix: Make the query non-constant and append a random comment at the end to make it appear different each time to SQL Server! LOL! If it came to that, I would immediately submit my own code to TheDailyWTF.com. :D

Hello,I have one application which is having written in asp.net & plain asp.I am having one button on asp page,when i will click on that button, then itwill execute one other asp page.And after the execution of that second asp page, I redirect it to someASPX page with some values.On the ASPX page, it will connect to the Database, and insert the values.Thus, sometime, the following error is occuring :"Timeout expired. Hi All,
I've had a DTS Package scheduled to run every morning since June last year, however on Monday and again this morning, the DTS package has failed on two of its steps. This DTS package runs on SQL Server 2000 and the server is a Windows 2000 Server.
Basically, the DTS Package steps that fail are populating a "cache" table from a "live" table and then performing Inserts / Updates on the "live" table from a CSV file depending upon whether data exists in the "cache" table and whether the CSV file contains an "Insert" or "Update" flag. The live table has just over 800,000 rows of data and our nightly CSV extract, containing both inserts and updates, has about 6000 rows.
The error / failure has only happened in the last two days and I'm not too sure if there's any "timeout" feature in DTS and if there is, how I can modify it, or whether this may be something to do with long transactions or temp dbspace running out.
The time that the DTS package runs was modified last week to run two hours earlier (03:00 instead of 05:00) and has ran okay for a few days. I don't know whether this change is a red herring, as I have checked other DTS packages on the machine and none appear to run at the same time.

Hello,
I am researching alternatives to a stored procedure that uses a linked server query that my ASP page uses to retrieve records to the page.
Should I:
Use replication (Data is constantly updated, so a snapshot won't do. Merge replication?)
Break up the stored procedure into subqueries?
Use a view on the remote server instead of the actual tables?
I am trying to reduce the amount of table scans, what is the best way to do this?
Here is the stored procedure I am trying to tune:

We have been bothered with this problem for a while. Usually I happens in the early moring. Later on after the error is gone on auser, the error never happens again on any user for the day. Is this a web Server problem or an aspx.vb coding error? Thanks,Jeffrey

Error below was returned from an agent job:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server returned message "Query timeout expired". [SQLSTATE 01000]
A linked Server was set up against a remote database to backup a database and it runs perfectly well when executed directly against the remote server but returns the above error when set up through Sql Server Agent. Permissions are good as the step returns success. I reset the query timeout property to zero but error persist. What else should I be looking at to make this work?

From time to time i get this error "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." so I tried to change the connection string by adding thie following "Connect Timeout=200; pooling='true'; Max Pool Size=200" but still it is giving the same error! so why is this happening ? and what can I do!
btw the timeout expired happens when a stored procedure is executed at the Fill method !

I am facing a problem in SQL Server 2005 and the .NET Environment. I have an SP, which will return me the result within fraction of second when i execute it in SQL Server Management studio. But randomly (Frequently), its giving timeout when i execute it from .NET Envirnment.
If i execute it at that same time in Management studio, i am not getting the error. But getting the Timeout when i execute it in the Server Explorere of VS 2005 or in the Application which uses it.
Can any one figure out the solution.

Hi!
I am having a problem with my windows app in VB.net. I am just trying to do a very simple select command to retrieve some data. I am using a hosting server with a VPN.
When i click on the button it keeps giving me the error above. When I use server management express to do the same query it works fine and relatively fast.
So I have tried setting the CommandTimeout to 120 but when it stops, the debugger shows that the value of the COmmandTimeout is 30, although it stops after about 15 secs.
I am really lost and would need some help please! Find my code underneath.

HI,
I am getting this error on web server. My Appication is working fine on my Local Network where DB server and web server are on different machine. But getting TimeOut on web server. I tested the query on Query Analyzer it takes hardly 3 sec (Max) to execute. There is only Select query and total number of records are around 2100 which is not a big data.
I have used Connect Timeout = 180 in connection string which is also not effective.
please tell me how can I handle this exception.

We've been having timeout problems.
In our development environment we have IIS and SQL Server 2005 both running on the same box. We use VWD or our dev server's IIS to run the apps.
What happens is the database stops responding to our web applications and we continue to get the timeout error. I can still execute queries from Management Studio but all of the web apps all timeout.
Then, the only was we can get the database to start responding again is if we restart the SQL Server service.
Any ideas as to why the database would stop responding to all of the web apps but not Management Studio? It tends to happen a couple times a day when we are developing. Only the other developer and myself use the DEV environment.

Hi, I keep getting this error. I have a query that takes 47 seconds when I run it in SQL Server 2005. My connection string looks like this:connectionString="Server=server; Database=db; Pooling = true; Connect Timeout=60; Max Pool Size=300;I understand that Connect Timeout 60 = 60 minutes. I'm trying to do mass inserts/updates. Using Transactions. The table hierarchy contains 3 levels (TL1, TL2, and TL3):
Here is what I'm trying to accomplish:
1) Start Begin Transaction (in desperation, I've tried all the isolation levels- I was hoping ReadUncommitted would work!)
2) Do an Insert/Update in table TL1 (this works).
3) Grab the ID from step 2 and do a SELECT on table TL2 to determine if I need to an UPDATE or INSERT.
Since I'd be inserting 3 rows into table TL2 (for a particular parent ID with different types), the first SELECT (on TL2) works and then I'm able to do an INSERT into TL2. The transaction is still alive. Now, I try to do a SELECT on table TL2 to see if a record exists for this type and this is when I get the exception "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
My guess is that I have a LOCK on the table TL2 (from the first SELECT), which seems to be causing the problem.
Note:
The INSERTs and UPDATEs are done by executing stored procs.
For the SELECTS, I'm using a different connection (from the one which the transaction is using) and close it after the SELECT is executed.

Okay all this used to be fine on another machine it has jsut been moved. Hi,
I am running a stored procedure that collects some records from two tables do some calculations with those records and insert those calculation result in a temp. table. I am calling this stored procedure in my aspx page and then later select all the records from temp table and show it in a table.
When I run this application on browser it give me Timeout expired error but whn I execute the stored procedure it runs properly but takes around 3:10 mins to execute in query analyzer. I did some google work and based on that I specified CommandTimeout = 300 for SP and Connection timeout=400 in web.config. But still it didnt worked. Sometimes it runs properly but sometimes its not.
Where I am doing mistake? and Wht should i do to resolve this? Plz. help.

Guys,
I am trying to attach a database object to the App_Data directory I got thie error
Error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
This is what I did. I right click the App_Data folder and click Add New Item. Then I click the SQL Database. This is where I got the error.
What should I do? Please help

When I run my web app on my dev machine it works perfect. When I precomile it to my web deployment project and then copy the debug files to my web server I get this problem when trying to login (obviously it's using ASPNETDB.mdf). Any ideas?

i want to update employee table by selecting columns from employee_temp
i do that using oracle but i want it using sql server 2000
Sample syntax Below: for oracle

this syntax for oracle....

Hi,
I am getting the following error when running SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor on a test database of 300Gb aprox. After a long wait we got the following error:
Database Server,"PreUpgrade","Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.","OLDSYSTEMTABLES",
After that error we got several similar errors of "timeout expired" pointing to FTCATALOGNAMERESTRICTION, and others.
I found the same problem reported in other forums and recommended to run the UA database per database, but we are running the Upgrade Advisor against only one database in periods of low activity.
We cannot advance the upgrade to SQL Server 2005 on other databases due to this error. I would appreciate some clues or suggestions.

I have an ASP.Net webpage for uploading multiple files. The process is, when the client uploads files..using SQL queries I am inserting into a database1 and then calling a stored procedure to remove garbage data from database1 and insert this new data into a production database(Database2).
When the file size is aroung 6-7MB it executes fine....but when the size increases to 30 MB I can see the data in Database1 but only when the Stored procedure is called...after a minute or so, I get the following error in the analyser.

Hello,I have a program called Gestimum which question a MS SQL 2000 DataBase.I have 6 clients who connect to the database througth Gestimum.It works good for 5 of them.But one of them I have TimeOut Error when he wants to print.Gestimum use ADO to connect with Database, it use also TCP/IP toconnect with the server.I already change the timeout delay to 0 (infinite)So i don't understand why only one client doesn't work.If anybody I have an idea ?Thanks wery much.PS: I'm sorry for my poor English (i'm French)
