SQL Server 2000 Does Not See Tape Drive

Mar 23, 2007

We are currently trying to restore a copy of our production database to a different server. Unfortunately SQL does not see the tape drives and we are not able to add them. The tape drives are installed and visible in device manager. I have updated all drivers and firmware but still no luck. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Tape Drive Not Detected

Feb 5, 2008

I have a SQL 2005 Server (SP1) running on Windows 2003 server machine. Now windows can detect the tape drive attached to the system as 'HP StorageWorks DLT VS160'. Even 'ntbackup' detects it and is able to backup data to the tape drive. However, SQL Server is unable to detect the tape drive. The tape does not show up in the Backup Devices in Server Objects and hence I'm unable to take backups directly to the tape via SQL Server. How do I get SQL 2005 to recognize the tape drive?

Backing Up To A Tape Drive

Mar 9, 2007

I am setting up a new SQL Server that has an external HP 920 SAS Ultrium tape drive attached to it via a p400 sas card.

I am running 2003 R2 x64 with 2005 SQL Server x64, and I am trying to set up my DB backup plan but for some reason I can't get SQL to recognize my tape drive, alhough it is listed in device manager.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'm kind of stumped.

Thanks in advance,

Need To Know The Actual Size On The Tape Drive

Aug 16, 2007

Need to know the actual size on the tape drive

I€™m using LTO3 tape drive (400GB) the used media is for LTO2, currently I€™m looking for LTO4(1.6TB) but I need the backward compatibility to support LTO3 tapes so I can go for LTO2 media or LTO3 media.

I need to know the size of the database backup (Ms SQL2005 SP1 x64-bit, on Ms Windows 2003 R2 x64-bit) on the tape drive. I can see the backup size of the database but not the size on the tape which is using hardware compression.

Is there a way or a tool to view that.

Backing Up The SQL Server 2000 Database Using Tape Drives

Jun 9, 2006

Dear sir/madam,

I am from NTU, Singapore and we have a windows 2003 server edition installed on a DELL server and it also runs MS SQL server 2000 for a project of ours. We have installed a HP tape drive on the dell server and it works fine if ntbackup is used at the command prompt but then the SQL enterprise manager does not recognize the tape drive and backing up of our database is of high priority as it contains sensitive information. But the tape drive is installed properly as the device manager does not show any error and ntbackup also recognizes it. I cant seem to figure out why SQL server 2000 cannot recognize it. It would be very helpful if you could kindly guide me on this issue.

Thanking you

Restore Clustered SQL Server 2000 From Backup On Local Drive

Aug 1, 2007

We are attempting to restore one of our databases from a backup that went to a local drive on the server.
We see the backupset in the list but receive an error that it is not available when we try to use it. When we try to restore from device and select the files the drive letter is not available. When we attempt to enter the path to the file it can't locate it. We don't have space on our SAN to copy the backup there and we can't add the local drive to the cluster resources.

Is there a way to get this backup done?

SQL Server 2005 Log Shipping And 3rd Party Tape Backups

May 27, 2008

Hello,

I would like to know if anyone has a recommended method for having backups to tape while running log shipping. For example, is it possible to copy the transaction log backups used for log shipping to tape and apply them to a Full Database Restore from a 3rd Party Backup tool such as Veritas?

My goal is to be able to do a point-in-time restore from tape and still be able to use SQL Server 2005 Log Shipping.

Thanks,

Can I Used A Shared Drive Rather Than A Mapped Drive With OpenRowSet?

Apr 4, 2008

Hi

I have been trying to use openrowset with a shared drive, and even though the share has "full control" permissions granted to "everyone" and the accout that SQL runs under has been granted explicit full control permissions I am unable to open the file which itself has no security on it.

Can I not use a \ path and only use mapped drives?

Thanks

below works...

SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:5People.xls', [Sheet1$])

below doesn't work...

SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=\cluster02FileManager5People.xls', [Sheet1$])

How To Move A Log File From 'e' Drive To 'f' Drive....

Nov 9, 2000

I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.

What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:

ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log

I get the following error message..

Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.

I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.

Has anyone run into this?

Installing SQL Server On C Drive

Mar 12, 2008

I have always installed SQL Server (2000 and 2005) on the c drive of the server, and placed the data and log files on seperate disks.
Our network administrator says it should be installed on the d drive and c should be left just for the windows install. Is there any benefit in this? It seems to be causing a problem with our SAN having SQL Server installed on the c drive. Anyone else had similar problems?

SQL Server 6.5 Recovery Of Db After Drive Failure.

Aug 9, 2004

Good Morning guys n Gals.

New user on these forums, so basically, hey, how are yas?

I have a bit of a situation, and have done a search - although not much info has turned up relating to my situation (maybe my search was just useless).

Anyways, basically, I run SQL Server 6.5 on NT4 server.
The disks were striped - not RAIDED.

What happened was, the 4th disk died, and we replaced it with a new blank drive.

Now, I am left with two DAT files (log and data) for my database.
I cannot remember how large these were created as it was many years ago.

I have no backups.

Reseting the status hasn't worked, also I have tried creating a new DB / Devices (in size similar to those reported in windows), and "moving" the devices to point to the original ones, but no luck: and thus was wondering if anybody had any hint / tips or ideas?

Cheers,
Jamie

Moving DB Files To Another Drive On The Server.

Sep 27, 2005

Howdy y'all! :)

I have been instructed to move a large database we have on one of our servers off the current drive (local RAID-5 driveset in the server) to a EMC "drive" (logical drive, off-server).

I know one option is to back up the database, delete the database, re-create the db using the new drive for data/log files, then restore the database.

However, I was wondering if it would be better to just detach the DB, move the data/log files, then reattach to them?

Is it half-doz of one, and 6 of the other?

How should I go about this dastardly deed?

Off to poke around in BOL, but thought I would post first in case it's an incredibly easy answer for y'all

Thanks!
