May 3, 2008I am trying to install sql server 2005 books online but I am failing and I am getting this message
"This installation pakage could not be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?

Nov 6, 2007I downloaded and tried to install the file "SqlServer2K5_BOL_May2007.msi" and got a message:

SQL Server Express Books Online
Dec 1, 2007are a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.
I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.

Every time (size of msi file would be around 25 KB) I try toextract the msi file, I get an error message to the effect that 'it isnot a valid windows installer package'. Trouble Going Thru The Deployment Tutorial In Books Online
Apr 9, 2008I am trying to go thru the deployment tutorial, but I'm running into some trouble. The two sample packages I need to work with are called DataTransfer.dtsx and LoadXMLData.dtsx found in the samples.
When I examine these packages, they are writing to tables called dbo.HighIncomeCustomers and dbo.OrderDatesByCountryRegion. These tables don't exist in my copy of AdventureWorks database.
Also, when I try to open the Connection Manager for the target tables, I get a message that says, "The specified provider is not suported. Please choose different provider in connection manager."
Is it possible I'm having these issues because I'm working with a different version of the sample packages?

I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:
Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization
Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?
Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.

Recovery :: Server Cluster Resource Fails To Come Online And Pending Online State
Nov 3, 2015We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured.If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately  .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

Work-around detailed in KB here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913392/en-us) does not work.
Un-installing Feb 2007 BOL and installing original makes no difference.

SQL Server 2005 Reporting - Books / Reference Guides, Etc, Need Advice!!!

I am not new to the SQL Server world, but am somewhat new to the SQL Server 2005 world. I am just getting into the reporting tool. By just messing around for about an hour or so, I was able to get what I wanted somewhat. Basically, I'd like to get up to speed on the reporting side of things fairly quickly. So I am looking at some books, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any.
Here is a few that caught my eye:

Feb 18, 2008Hi,I was wondering if someone could help advise me.Basically i have a client who wants to upgrade from a desktop msaccess solution to a web based system using MS SQL Server 2005.Basically their main concern is in losing the ability to write ad-hocqueries using the MS Access query manager. I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Importing Online XML File Into SQL Server 2005 Tables – No Data Transferred
Oct 12, 2006Does anyone have any great suggestions on how I can import an online XML file into an SQL 2005 table?
So far I tried to accomplish it with SSIS Data Flow Task where my source is XML Source (Data access mode: XML file location; XML location: URL, Use inline schema = True). This set up properly identified the columns to be imported.
I used Copy Column data flow transformation task to load data to OLE DB destination table that has same structure.
When I run the task it does execute with no errors, however the table remains empty. It looks like I am failing to read the actual data.
Do you have any suggestions? I am willing to go around this approach with stored procs/com/you name it €“ just make it work!

SQL Server 2005 Install Keeps Failing To Install SQL Services (i.e. The Main Engine!).
Feb 6, 2007I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

De-install And Re-install Problems SQL Server 2005
Feb 15, 2007I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005.
After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports.

Apr 8, 2007I went to one of the Microsoft "Ready To Launch" events over a year ago. Microsoft was gracious and gave everyone who attended a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. I have installed the Visual Studio and use it all of the time. I also installed the SQL server 2005 but I can not find the application on my computer. After the install the only items that appear to have been installed are the following:
SQL Server Configuration tools(SQL Server Configuration manager,SQL Server Error and usage reporting, SQL Server surface area confiuration, Reporting Services configuration). There is also a menu icon labeled "Microsoft SQL server upgrade advisor" and SQL server upgraded wizard.
That is all. I can't find anything that is analogus to the Enterprise manager that was in SQL server 2000 or anything that is analogous to Query Analyzer of 2005.
Can someone help me out? We use SQL server 2005 so I know how it looks. I just can't see where it insalled. I don't think it did?

Books For SQL 2000/2005
Dec 7, 2006Well, after having a crash course on backups, tlogs and some other good stuff, I pretty much made the decision that I need to get some good books to further help me progress in my database admin path.
Right now, we are running SQL 2000 SP4, but we are planning on upgrading to 2005. With that, and the fact I am pretty new to databases, what books are recommended?
I want to get a book that will help me:
-better administration
-write SQL query code as well as understand it (what is difference between SQL programming and SQL query (such as on the sqlteam bookstore)
I feel that my career path is going to start heading down a Database path, so anything that you recommend with that is great as well.

am trying to install SQL 2005 in a 2-node virtual Windows 2003 cluster. I set
the cluster up through Virtual Server 2005 with 2 virtual nodes and one
virtual domain. The nodes can connect to each other as well as the
