SQL Server 2005 Connection Time Out Problem
Jul 17, 2006
Hi All,
I have C# application which will create normally 200 pool connection with SQL server. Previously i was using the SQL Server 2000.I don't have any issue. Recently i have upgraded the Database to SQL Server 2005 with SP1. After that problem Started. I was getting the Timoout problem and due to this my application getting crahsed.
To give about the Detail about my SQL sever 2005 Database: i have six merge Subscribers and three Transactional Publishers. I don know that "is the Replication giving all the time Out issue for my C# application?".
And i was using the below Connection String :
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Data Source=192.11.11.11.
so by default i beleive it is 30 seconds as the Time Out. I don know why within this period there is no response from SQL server 2005. My application Server and Database Server are in the Same network with 100Mbps.
What is the wrong here ? Is it SQL server 2005 with the Replication gives the problem to me ?
Can anyone help me. I assumed that SQL server 2005 will work without issues and we have implemented in prod. now in prod i am getting this Error.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I installed SQL server 2005 express edition on my windows server and I had no problem with connecting it remotely through Management Studio, then I removed it and installed a full edition SQL server 2005. That's when it's gone all wrong.
Now I can't remotely connect the server through Management Studio. The error I get is the same as some of the people in this forum has which is:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)"
The problem is that I have all protocols enabled and even when I disable firewall and unassign all the ip filters still no go.
I looked at te machine.config file at my server and the connection string bit goes like this:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>
Can anybody tell me wether you think the problem lies here where it says SQLEXPRESS where I actually have Sql Server 2005 installed.
I've been in and out of every documentation regarding this but they all tell me to configure the protocols and nothing else which doesn't really help.
I have tried running .Net Sql server wizard on the server but it didn't connect probably for the same reasons why I cant connect remotely.
I would really appreciate any help
Thanks

Hi, I had an old web application created during asp.net 1.1 and it have a connection problem with the sql server 2005 when it is mirgrated to a new webserver with dotnet framework 2.0 platform. I have enabled the remote access(TCP/IP and named pipes) in sql server 2005, did all the neccessary things, check whether the TCP/IP is enabled, named pipe is enabled... I created another web application using VS 2005. The database connection works perfectly well.This are the connectionString from the old web application.<appSettings> <add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=127.0.0.1;Database=somedb;User id=user; Password=somepassword; Trusted_Connection=False; POOLING=FALSE"/></appSettings> Thankyou in advance!

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.
BACKGROUND...
Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.
QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to connect to Desktop SQL Server 2000 from Windows mobile PC Emulator (VS 2005). I need a direct connection using connection string to SQL Server 2000 through local wireless network without IIS.
Bellow is the code that I use. After executing this code I get an error on line Conn.Open(). Error says SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
SQL is un and running, and I can log in using SA username from the desktop. Even if I chance IP for another SQL server in my connection string I still get the same error. There is no firewall of any kind running.
Dim connectionSTR As String = "Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=False;Server=192.168.0.202,1433;initial catalog=MyDB;user id=sa;password=;"
Dim Conn As SqlConnection
Conn = New SqlConnection(connectionSTR)
Conn.Open()
If Conn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
MessageBox.Show("Open")
End If
About my environment: SQL Server 2000 is running on Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. Application which I need to connect to SQL Server is in Visual Studio 2005. I execute the application in Windows Mobile PC Emulator and try to connect to SQL Server from emulator.
Your advice and help is very appreciated
Thank you

Hello, How are you?
I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. I installed the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=%2085E0C3CE-3FA1-453A-8CE9-AF6CA20946C3&displaylang=en. In the additional information says by installing SQLServerCE31-EN.msi installs the provider (System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll) in the GAC (global assembly cache) and registers the OLEDB provider (sqlceoledb30.dll). So, I don€™t understand why couldn€™t I create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE?
I appreciate your help€¦

I downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express and some sample databases (incl. Adventureworks_data.mdf), but when I try to Add Connection in VS 2005 to point to this db and use the Test Connection button, it gives the error:
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio
---------------------------
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
---------------------------
I've tried setting the data source as either "Microsoft SQL Server Database File" or "Microsoft SQL Server", but get the same error.
Any tips on verifying SQL Srv Express is installed correctly? Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running
telnet sql5.hostinguk.net 1433 and
sqlcmd -S sql5.hostinguk.net -U username -P password
See below:

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:
TCP 81.105.102.47:1138 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
TCP 81.105.102.47:1139 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
TCP 81.105.102.47:1140 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?

I will be installing SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition for the first time and was looking for some hints...
unfortuntely, I don't know alot about what kind of applications they will be using the databases for.. but I do know that I have 400GB to allocate. My manager suggested a seperate volume for the SQL Server Binaries.. not sure why... ANY OPINIONS ON THAT???
This is what he suggested
C: OS
D:SQL Server application install
E:datafiles
F:Logfile
e:tempdb
any hints, suggestions, opinions, things to watch out for... ???????
I was thinking more along the lines of
c:OS and application installs (sql server etc..)
E:datafiles and TempDB
F:Logsfiles

In a Web app as per above, where are connections to SQL Server and the connection pool monitored? Is it in SQL Server itself?For example, in the following connection string:"Server=(local); Database=TranOps; " + "Integrated Security=SSPI;" + "Pooling = true;" + "Min Pool Size = 1;" + "Max Pool Size = 5;" + "Persist Security Info=False;";The first user accesses a web form, and the connection is opened, and the pool started, then the connection is closed. I think at this point there should be five connections available.When the second user accesses their web form, and connects using exactly the same string, it seems that if the connection is requested within a certain time frame of the first, one of the original five connections will be 'opened', or more correctly drawn from the pool, and used. If I am understanding this correctly, then the pool must be maintained by SQL Server, not by anything in the web application. Is this a correct interpretation? Many thanks,Mike Thomas

Hi!
I have this problem:
When I try to open database table under database explorer in VWD 2005

and the connection will be closed.
When I try to right click on my database's file name under database
explorer and click connection to set the connection setting and click
on "Test Connection", it says the same thing.
This happen sometime, but after I restart my computer, I am able to access my database file again.

Any help would be appreciated.
We have a C++ program that connects to a remote SQL Server database. Recently the system we pull data from upgraded to SQL Server 2005 and my program can no longer connect to the database. We're getting TimeOut expired errors (not login timeout expired) within 15 - 20 seconds after attempting to open the connection. I have confirmed with this other system that my id does not show up in any logs on their end.
Here is some background:
Nothing has changed on my end. We have another system that my team supports that is able to connect, and they have changed nothing. They're using a different connection method. We're using oledb and they use odbc and a different provider. I confirmed with the SQL Server team that this id made a connection.
Connect String:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;;User ID=XXX;Password=xxxx;Data Source=serverdb instance;Initial Catalog=xxxx;
From what i've read, etc this connect string should work still
Here is an example of the code and context of this connect string
'Set connection object
pTEST_HR(pConnect.CreateInstance(__uuidof(Connection)));
pConnect->ConnectionString = OurConnectString;
pConnect->Open("","","",adConnectUnspecified);
'Create and open recordset
TESTHR(pRstEmployee.CreateInstance(__uuidof(Recordset)));
pRstEmployee->Open("Employee", This is the point at which we get a timeout.
_variant_t((IDispatch *)pConnection,true), adOpenKeyset,
adLockOptimistic, adCmdTable);
pCmd->CommandText = SomeString;
pRstEmployee = pCmd->Execute(NULL,NULL,adCmdText);
Server Info:
I have succesfully pinged the server
The client is not in the same domain as the db server
Error:
Appl: A database error has occured ->
Error
Code = 80040e31
Code meaning = IDispatch error #3121
Source = Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Description = Timeout expired
Other info:
Not sure about my client database provider.
This is coded in Visual C++ 6.
I'm not knowledgeable on SQL Server configuration, etc.
Things i've tried so far
Change provider from SQLOLEDB.1 to SQLOLEDB
Change provider to SQLNCLI
Had SQL server query time out set to never time out. The remote login timeout changed to 600 seconds from 30 seconds. However we are getting a timeout in only a few seconds, so i find that interesting.

Greetings,I have an e-timesheet application.i made a function that takes the startdate of the week:public SqlDataReader GetProjectsActive(DateTime SheetDate) { SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["connectionString"]); SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand("GetProjectsActive", myConnection); myCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; SqlParameter parameterSheetDate = new SqlParameter("@SheetDate", SqlDbType.DateTime); parameterSheetDate.Value = SheetDate; myCommand.Parameters.Add(parameterSheetDate); myConnection.Open(); SqlDataReader dr = myCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection); return dr; } i run the application and i pass the value 6/1/2008 (date without time) to the GetProjectsActive but what i notice that the storedprocedure adds the current time to the passsed date when it has been executed so some projects will not appear since the startdate and enddate of the project are only dates so i try this solution: parameterSheetDate.Value = SheetDate.Date;and it works finebut my question why the current time has been added to the storedprocedure automatically although i pass only the date 6/1/2008 date????your help is highly appreciated.Best regards.

I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition & SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
In a database that is role-manager-enabled, you will have some tables like apsnet_Users, aspnet_Roles, etc.
And some Columns like CreatedDate, LastLoginDate in the tables.
My problem:
The datatime values in the aforementioned fields are updated based on GMT instead of the client's local time zone.
Is this the way it is?
No matter true or not, how to fix it?
Many Thanks in advance :)

Hi all,
I'm wondering what is the best way to store time-series data in an SQL database?? I've done a bit of investigating on the rrdtool (round robin database tool) that is used in a lot of nix based solutions for monitoring network equipment. I have a need to collect performance data from servers and routers and then produces some nice graphs from that data. I'm just not sure who i should store that data without the database growing to some huge size.
Any suggestions?

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 I am supposed to:
1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Background: We have SQL Server 2005 x64 running on a quad-core (dual dual-core) machine with 16GB of RAM. The database is about 10GB in size and we execute around a million stored procedures a day on it. Our application uses about 1000 different stored procedures on this machine. The application is a transactional B2B web-app with about 2000 users.
The problem we have is a really odd one that I can't seem to find much information on. We have a small number (3-4) of stored procedures that's exibiting this problem.
The stored proc in question takes on average 100ms CPU time to execute. It's a fairly complex stored proc, about 300 lines long, 6-7 select statements and it uses temp tables. No updates / inserts except for on the temp tables. It's executed about 5000 times per day. About once a week, though, execution times will suddenly jump up to 3000 ms average. This happens randomly during the day, although it seems to happen more often on Monday mornings (the DB is mostly unutilized over the weekend)
To fix this, I force the DB to recalculate the execution plan by adding / removing (depending what I did last time around) the line 'set arithabort on' at the top of the stored procedure. I have no idea why this works, but it does. Within seconds of changing it, the stored proc execution time will go back to it's normal range of 60-150ms.
I've tried setting the execution plan of the stored procedure but I can't get it to work - the execution plan is very long and I don't know how to debug the error I get.
What is happening? This happens with a couple of stored procedures - usually the more complex ones. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Is the Date/Time of the latest SQL Server 2005 instance restart stored somewhere in the system catalog?
This value is quite relevant when retrieving information on the costliest unused indexes in the instance.
I know of one way of doing this, which is to search the SQL Logs for this info.
This solution is very unwieldy - we recycle the logs daily and we only keep the logs of the last 7 days.

Dear All
The problem is I am going to predict the production for different category of product.
attributes are
year - key
A production - predict only
B production -predict only
C production -predict only
And in the SQL it is impossible to to give input and predict (I am not sure whether that is a error or not).
And in the decision tree
for the
Product A - get as product A >=12324
Product B year > 2000
Product C product C >=35454
I want to know why the label is changing time to time.
Please help me on this. Thank you
Menik

Can I connect from a SQL Server 2005 database to a SQL Server 2000 database, without establishing a linked server connection.
I need to fire a SELECT query on a SQL Server 2000 database, but don't want to add it as a linked server. Is there any way I can do this or its not possible??
