The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is (17058)

Hi Everyone,
I have problem when installing SQL 2005 Enterprise to my Windows 2003 R2 cluster. I install the SQL instance on the first node in my cluster, it analyses the cluster and comes up with no errors or warnings, i answer all the installation questions and proceed with the installation. When installing the SQL engine I see the status changing as the instance is started and then stopped again etc, finally the status changes to "removing backup files" when it get an error that reports:
"The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. The error is: The specified module could not be found."
Unfortunately there isnt any more information to go on. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
A few months ago, I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 on a cluster (Active-Active), the Cluster has 3 instances, 2 lives in one node and the other one in the other node. When I try to make the deployment an error message appear, I do not have the error right now but it€™s something like €œCould not connect to the passive node, installation failed€?. The worst part of the error was all instances shut down and I couldn€™t bring on line and I have to reinstall all instances. I need to install SP2 but I€™m a little afraid fail again. Do you know the best way to deploy the SP2 on a cluster? Maybe move all instances in one node before install SP2? Can you help me with your comments. Do you think I have problems with the windows cluster?
Thanks and Regards,

Hi, Folks
My story is a bit of similar to some of the fellows. During the default installation, it failed at the last section which is "SQL server database service" because it cannot start the SQL service.
The difference of my story is this is not the first time I install it on my computer or any upgrade from whatever other version. I'd installed it for a couple of weeks working perfectly before my computer seemingly infected by an adware. Since then SQL Server stopped working, then I decided to re-install it after I had the adware removed.
So it shouldn't be the limitation of either CPU or memory, I think. I hope I could get an answer to it before I have to re-install the whole OS, PAINFULLY.

I'm new with development and just wanted to get the Personal Website Sample to work. So far, I'm have am having a terrible time installing SQL Express Edition. I'm not exactly sure what to do next. I have installed, manually uninstalled, and reinstalled many times. Sometimes I get error 29503 & 1067. Other times when I reinstall I get 29503 & -2146885628 . Here's the info I got so far for my 29503&1067 since that error occurs 95% of time. I believe I got the -2146885628 error when I changed a setting from network to local services.
I feel so confused right now. Any help would be appreciative.

Hi All,
We have been experiencing issues with SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade on cluster servers.
After running the setup, it gives failure message for Database services.
Installing SP2 on 64bit cluster server we get error regarding "passive node not patched properly or run the setup from passive node". However, select serverproperty(€˜productlevel€™) returns the output as "SP2". On more digging we found from SQL Server Error log, that the resourcedb of that server is of level 9.0.0.3199
€œThe resource database build version is 9.00.1399. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.€?
However if we do the SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade on standalone machines with the same software repository, it upgrades successfully and also resourcedb upgraded to 3042 version. So if we look at the errorlog of a standalone machine it gives following message.
"The resource database build version is 9.00.3042. This is an informational message only. No user action is required."
I again reiterate that, this is the issue we have faced on 64bit SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade only on cluster SQL Servers, however on standalone machine it works fine and 32bit SP2 installation works fine.
Please let us know the solution for this.
regards
Jay Mehta

Due to a SQL 2014 cluster installation failure related to security while setting up the primary node, I had to remove the node and any related installation programs from the node and redo the installation again. However I am unable to use the machine name as the SQL network name during the instance configuration, I get the following:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.InputSettingValidationException: The SQL Server failover cluster instance name "MachineName" already exists as a server on the network. Specify a different failover cluster instance name.I am still getting the same name since the node name "MachineName" is listed under the cluster name. I have used machine name as SQL network name without an issue. I do not have any existing SQL machine name in network using same machinename which I want to use for this installation.

All:
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. The install stalls permanently, the SQL Server's memeory usage and CPU usage plummets to nothing and the SQL Server 2005 Setup Dialogue's status stops at "Validating Database Password." This occurs on the SQL Server Database Services portion of the install. The last line in the SQL Server Setup.log says "<Func Name = 'SAPaswwordPolicyCheck'>
I have verified that the sa password that I am entering when prompted for it in the install setup is valid with respect to SQL Server and Windows Server 2003 SP 1 (13 chars, at least one symbol, at least one upper and at least one lower). What else could be causing this problem? Any ideas or stabs would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I tried installing SQL 2005 Dev Edition on my Win 2000 Professional machine. That failed. But now I cannot send out emails or even open a simple Email task from DTS. This is something that worked perfectly fine before I attempted the SQL 2005 installation. It seems that the SQL 2005 installation somehow messed up the the MAPI profile. The exact error message that I get when trying to execute or open a Email task in DTS is: CAnnot load MAPI Interface layer for DTS. Please make sure that semmap90.dll is installed.

Hi there:
After a carefull reading of several post about this error I decided to post mine just in case it gives some clue to somebody with the knowledge I haven´t as I saw there is two kind of customers with this or very similar errors:
1. Some of them finally had success (error: 15209) installing it following the instructions in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920114/en-us
2. Some still fighting with the problem (err: 29503).
Both errors give the same instructions, to my understand (very poor) and I followed every suggestion, but let me do some history:
1. I have 3 computers at home, all them from different makers and XP bundled on them, now all them SP2 thanks to the Updates service.
2. One has nothing extra on it. Used only to surf the net/play games and nothing more (Wife). One for work (Mine and Main), with VS 2005, Intel Pentium IV HT 3 Ghz and a Toshiba laptop with VS2005 and the same processor with not problems at all.
3. Due to former issues installing SQL server in Mine I decided finally to start from scratch, so I formatted the disk, installed XP and downloaded SP 2 and all automatic updates, then installed VS 2005 Standard and got exactly the same issue as before.
Sorry to make it long. The point is that following the instructions in MS KB documents and several posts to the letter I found out several strange things:
1. None of my computers is able to show an Address bar in Windows Explorer, when checked to be shown only produces a new greyed item in the icons bar at the very right end. If pressing F11 (full screen) then the address bar is shown and can be used.
2. Only the laptop had a folder named Protect in the indicated path.
3. None of them shows a Security tab in the Properties window of any folder or file.
4. In this thread http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=841859&SiteID=1 I thought at the very last post was the solution for my issue but then I found out another strange story: None of my computer have the "Simple file sharing" or "Use Simple file sharing" in the View label of Folder Options.
5. And this is possible the final clue: When examining the options in View label I realized that all the optios were related in my mother tongue (Spanish) whils the rest of the window was in English as I live in England and nearly all my software is in this language. Even some upgrades from MS when I was asked to choice a language I selected Spanish.
6. Only possibly I´m not the only one under these circumstances: https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=377860&SiteID=1 (Polish)
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=541221&SiteID=1 (Chinese)
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=431694&SiteID=1 (Spanish?)
and here's a part of my log:

7. The only difference between my laptop and desktop computers is that in regional settings Laptop has English for Regional options whilst desktop had Spanish.
Tried to change in desktop to English wont produce success installing SQL Server Express so I think there are more deep changes/corrections to do.
Those changes from English to Spanish is some XP windows are not coming from the first install, as the laptop came installed, so they should be produced after some upgrade were I was offered to download a regional version (SP 2?).
Hopefully this long post will give to some body with more brains and knowledge than me to get a work around to this problem, other than reformat, install and download SP 2 this time in English.
TIA
Jose Adell

I noticed in installing a SQL2005 failover cluster instance, that it is not necessary to install on both servers. Installing on the primary node automagically installs to the secondary node. Does this constitute a COMPLETE install? It all seems to work. BUT this process does not intall client pieces (SSMS, for instance) on the secondary node. If you want that stuff there, do you then go to that box and just do a client install?

The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting..
The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started.
A service specific error occurred: 17058.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3547.
What is the problem? Or how to find it?

Issue when building a FCI where after the step of specifying what drives the data, logs, tempdb go, the installer errors with this message:
Exit message: The volume that contains SQL Server data directory D:SQL_DataMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATA does not belong to the cluster group.
We are running Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise with Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows 6.1. I've confirmed that the disk group exists and is mounted in Windows and presented as available storage. Symantec has an article detailing this same circumstance but the Microsoft KB article that they refer to only has hotfixes for Windows Server 2012, not R2.
