SQL Server 2005 Express Database On The Internet
Jul 12, 2006
Hey all!
I am hoping that somebody will be able to help me getting my database working over the Internet.
I am using VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and have my database set up within a web site project in VS under the App_Data folder.
Everything runs smoothly when running the application on localhost I am just facing a problem when I attempt the same thing after uploading my pages to my web server.
I am receiving the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to
the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be
caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26
- Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)I have tried enabling the disabled SQLEXPRESS protocols and disabled my firewall with no luck.
I have also looked into using
localhostsqlexpress as the server name but I dont see how this method would work as it appears to only run a database on the local machine which is the problem I have currently.
Could anybody help me with this problem? I have only just started trying to use SQL Server Express as a means of database connectivity and I am not exactly sure how it all works.
Thanks

HI
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?
Q2: Does SQL Server 2005 Express support Direct Replication between other SQL Server 2005 Express clients?

Is it possible to connect to a sql server express over internet or not ?
- I am using a win2003 sp1 server. Freshly installed.
- The server is directly connected to internet.
- For the purpose of the test, I stopped the windows firewall and the IPSec service.
- I stopped SQL server Browser service.
- I find a free port (here : 1401)
- I activated TCP/IP protocol in SQL Server Configuration Manager, and I have selected 1401 as the TCP port in the IPAll sextion of TCP/IP protection (and I remove the '0' of the dynamic TCP Port).
- Restarted SQL server express...
In the sql server log, I get the message "Serveur Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 1401]"
But I never get an answer from the server.
sqlcmd -S ip_of_the_server, 1401 -U username -P password is working fine if launched on the server. But I always get a timeout error from any PC. Same with a telnet on port 1401.
Any idea ?

Hi all,
There is a sql express database .mdf file which I can access locally through local web pages using windows authentication and integrated security = true.
Now I want to publish this db and the web pages to my hoster's server so as to access the db from internet.
The connection string currently is in the web config as below:<add name="NORTHWNDConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|NORTHWND.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> The database is currently located in the App_Data folder.
Please give me some step by step solution to configure the db to access from internet. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
Thanks,
Ieyasu

Hi
Im having some problems setting up sql server so that i can connect to it in my vb program over the internet.
Im using windows xp pro and have IIS installed and using sql server 2005 express SP2.
My setup is as follows:
from phonecable to router, from router to wireless access point and the wireless connects to my computer.
I have tried disabling the xp firewall, and in the sql server configurationi have set the port to 11001, which i have also opened in my router.
There should be a connection to the computer, cause i have succesfully set up an FTP server on a different port.
I have also enabled remote connections, both via TCP/IP and named pipes.
I have tried to use telnet on my IP adress with the port 11001, and it says that i cant create a connection..Are there other settings i should set to get this to work? This has been bugging me for a little while...

Hi all,
In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.
The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Couple of questions for the SQL Server Guru's out there.
SQLServer 2005
Web Hosting Provider
Ok I am developing a Web application in ASP.NET with AJAX, etc. etc. It will be some time before it is ready to roll out. As a mockup I created the same application in Microsoft Access and Visual Basic (VS 2008), which I can link the tables to the hosting provider on the internet. Works very well and speed is very acceptable. The want to start utilizing it with the mockup distributed app that I created.
My question is, is how secure is the data that is moving from the local application to SQLServer 2005 with the web hosting provider ? Is there anything that I can do to increase security ?
Thanks, any thoughts ?
Appreciate any suggestions or comments.

I've used Sql Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003 for a few years. I've started a new position and they have access to Sql Server 2005 Standard and Visual Basic 2005 Express which I'd like to use for a new project. So I installed Sql Server 2005 and then VB 2005 Express on my workstation. I didn't choose the Sql Server option for VB Express because I already had Sql Server 2005 Standard installed with a simple database created. I created a simple vb project that justs connects to the database but I get the following error.
Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I looked at permissions in the database and it looks ok. I'm the db owner and I'm using Windows Auth. My connection string is
"Data Source=MySystem;initial catalog=AdventureWorks;integrated security=true;"
I thought I'd look at the starter kit to get some ideas about what the problem is, but when I started the movie starter kit project, it was upset that I didn't have Sql Server 2005 EXPRESS installed. Yea, but I do have Sql Server 2005 Standard installed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a question and bear with me because I am pretty new to this topic.
I have a SQL SERVER 2005 with a Client Server Application. Now I want to add a Webinterface. Sinice there is no infrastructure for hosting our own server. I want to go to an external hoster/provider.
Now my question is it possiple to replicate a snap-shot of the database to an web hoster?
If yes, what does my hosting package requieres beside SQL SERVER and ASP.NET. Any Services and open ports? What about Security?
When I replicate via push Service from my local SQL SERVER do I have to have a tunnel to the provider? Or external network access to my network via VPN. Or is there a way of doing it via HTTP? HTTPS? (I think I saw some settings about FTP replication...). Because of the Infrastructure Problems mentioned above...
It would be great if someone could give me closer information about this topic...
Links, Ressources, Tipps, Tricks, Tools... just anything... would be appriciated very much...
Thx.

PROBLEM:
SQL 2005 rejects connection from an ASP.net test webpage (shown below).
CONFIGURATION:
Internet > Concast Cable > Router > Sever01 Nic1 > Server01 SBS 2003 & SQL 2005 > Sever01 Nic2 > Switch > Local Area
Linksys Router WRV54G( Firmware Version: 2.39.2): Port Range Forwarding TCP 1433 and UDP 1434

Routing And Remote Access(RRAS) >NAT/Basic Firewall > Internet Ionnection > Services And Ports
Added TCP Incoming Port 1433, Private Address 127.0.0.1, Outgoing Port 1433
Added UDP Incoming Port 1434, Private Address 127.0.0.1, Outgoing Port 1434

rdr.Close()
conn.Close()
End Sub
ERROR:
The follworing error occurs or variations of it depending on different connection string configurations:
Occurs at: conn.Open()
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)
THOUGHTS
Possibly a bad connection string or Microsoft security issue.
I've attempted many other connection string formats such as:
Dim conn As SqlConnection = new SqlConnection("Data Source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,1433;
Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=Server01Test; User ID=sa; Password=xxx")
But I continue to receive connection failure messages (or invalid connection string errors for incorrectly formed connection strings).
I've tried disabling RRAS and Windows Firewall and the same errors resulted.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

What is needed for a hoster / hosting company to be able to host .Net applications with SQL Server 2005 Express database?
My questions regarding this issue basically are:
If a hoster has several sites hosted on a server, can each one of them have its own SQL Express database?
Or, do they have to be migrated to full SQL Server?
What is with the Upsize Tool for SQL Server Express (or something like that) - is it available?
Generally, how do hosters do their hosting - do they have SQL Server SPLA signed? Or do they just have SQL Server 2005 Express and allow users just to copy their web sites and databases to server?
I would really appreciate any answer.
Kind regards,
Luka

Hi All you good people there...
Need a big favour.
I am working on a Linked Server using SQL server 2005.
My present requirement is that I need to have distributed qurey which will fetch data from out of LAN Sql Server databases.
I need to know these things at earliest.
1. How to expose SQL server (may be data or instance itself) over internet?
2. How can I add this internet exposed SQL server as a Linked server on my local SQL server?
3. How to prevent my exposed SQL server data from hackers, as I need it only for SQL to SQL interaction?
Any help is appreciated.
Are there any good sites/links to refer??
Thanks in advance.

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.
Thanks.

I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.
The 1st problem: (It is resolved)
After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:
"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"
I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.
Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.
Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.
And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.
After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.
The solution is:
In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:
Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,
Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)
That solved this 1st problem.
I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.
I still have the 2nd problem:
The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.
I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:
I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.
Any input form anyone ? Appreciated!
