SQL Server 2005 Express Remote Admin Firewall Issues

Mar 6, 2006

Hi,

I'm experiencing problems connecting remotely (through the Management Studio) to a named instance of SQL Server Express 2005.

After investigation I determined it was a firewall issue - turn off windows firewall and I can connect fine. I initially added ports 1433 and 1434 to windows firewall - still no joy. Then I added the binaries explicitly (sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowsr.exe - or whatever they are) - still no joy. So, I looked into the firewall log to see what was being dropped. I found that my IP was trying to connect via port 1047 (TCP)... I've searched for anything about this on google and cannot find any indication that the management studio should be using this port to connect.

If I add this port, the connection works fine. Has anyone else experienced this ? As there seems to be no way of modifying the management studio to connect via a specific port, I'm a bit concerned that something is just not right.

I would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks.

Problems Of Remote Connections For Creating A SQLCLR Project In SQL Server Express-ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express Via Network/LAN

Sep 19, 2007

Hi all,

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.

2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

How Can I Get Sys Admin Priviledges On SQL Server Express 2005?

Oct 12, 2007

I am trying to add a new user/login to my database, but SQL server keeps telling me that I don't have permission to do that (error # 15247). Right now I am running Windows authentication, and am logged in as the same user as I was when I installed SQL server, and that user is the administrator for the computer system I am currently running.

It seems like SQL server won't let me change anything having to do with the security of the system - I've tried changing to mixed mode authentication, but I receive the same error then as well.

SQL Server 2005 Express Remote Access?

Jan 8, 2006

I am currently using a Microsoft Access (MDB) for my application. But I am looking at allowing other users on the network access the same database -- I know a Microsoft Access database is not the best solutuon for this enviroment.

I'd like to use SQL Server 2005 Express in this case. I am very fimilular with SQL Server 2000 Std/Ent editions. My question is, can I use the free SQL Server 2005 Express edition and allow remote users to connect to that database? Or  is it supposed to only be used as a local database accessed by only the machine it's installed on?

Thanks,

Jason

Setting Admin Rights To Report Manager, SQL Server Express 2005 On Vista Business

Mar 7, 2007

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...

I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.

My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:

"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for
performing this operation".

I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all. Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine). Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.

Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.

I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management. Adding an administrator here does nothing.

The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??

I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!

Many thanks in advance,

Jenny

How To Allow Remote Connections To SQL Server 2005 Express Database

Feb 27, 2006

I've developed an asp.net 2.0 web app with vs 2005 and am using a SQL Server 2005 Express database. The app works fine locally, but after uploading to the remote web server the following error occures:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

How do I go about granting remote connections to SQL Server Express?

Does the web server have to have SQL Server Express installed in order to run apps that utilize SQL Server 2005 Express databases?

Do I grant access locally on my machine or do I have to be on the web server to grant remote connections?

I've been using .net 1.1 with access databases for the past couple of years, so this is all new to me.

Thanks.

SQL Server Express 2005 And A Remote Data Source

Jul 24, 2007

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows XP SP2. I connect using Windows authentication.

The data source that I'm trying to hit is on a remote server. It's an OpenLink ODBC Data source, and the server is in another location. SQL Server 2005 Express and the ODBC connection are both installed/configured locally on my machine.

I can connect to the remote server. The DSN exists as a System DSN.

The DSN has its own proprietary configuration utility, which I can configure so that the server name is XPLILLEYGSQLEXPRESS. The configuration utility doesn't care; I connect successfully one way or the other.

When I open Management Studio Express, I can see my database (CMS) listed under the "Databases" folder, but there's no tables in there, other than the system tables.

So my question is, what am I missing?

Thanks

Cannot Configure SQL Server Express 2005 For Remote Connections

Aug 15, 2006

Hello. I have SQLEXPRESS 2005 installed on my laptop running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have an application that can connect to the local instance with no problem. The other day, I tried to configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 for a remote connection from my desktop. To date, I have been unable to figure out how to do this.

I have followed the instructions posted at various locations on the internet, but to no avail. While I can configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 to allow TCP/IP connections, I have been unable to restart the server.

Here is the pertinent snippet from the error log:

<time> Server A self-generated certificate was successfully loaded for encryption.
<time> Server Error: 26024, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2006-08-14 21:02:27.18 Server Server failed to listen on 'any' <ipv4> 0. Error: 0x277a. To proceed, notify your system administrator.

<time> Server Error: 17182, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x277a, status code 0x1.
<time> Server Error: 17826, Severity: 18, State: 3.
<time> Server Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately preceding this one in the error log.
<time> Server Error: 17120, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server SQL Server could not spawn FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.

I have a feeling this problem is due to the way my system is configured, not necessarily how my SQLEXPRESS 2005 is configured. My laptop and desktop are connected via a wireless router, and both machines are running Norton Anti-Virus 2006. I've added sqlserver.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to the exceptions list for the Worm protection on the laptop, i.e., the server machine. There's not a setting at the router that would prevent the server from re-starting, is there?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Remote Database Connection Through Firewall

Jan 29, 2001

I'm trying to adminster a remote MS SQL server from inside my company's firewall. I have the correct permissions to pass traffic through the firewall, but I need to authenticate to it first. When I try to register this remote SQL server through Enterpise Manager, it of course does not let me because of the firewall. Is there any way I can pass the firewall ID and password during the server registration process, and then pass the SQL server ID and password? I'm no SQL server expert by any means, but it doesn't look like it's possible. Are there any third party utilities that may accomplish this?

Thanks for the help!

I could not connect with the Vista server until I turned off the firewall, despite creating exceptions for both the sqlexpress and sqlbrowser services in the firewall setup. Obviously, I don't want to run on a wireless network without a firewall for any length of time. What else to I need to enable in order to run with my firewall up? In SMSS, I could 'see' the Vista server on the network with the firewall up, but I could not 'see' the SERVERSQLEXPRESS service or connect to it .

serious problems that may require
you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.To work around this problem, follow these steps on the
computer that Windows XP SP2 is installed on:

b. In the Run dialog box, type Services.msc, and then click OK.
c. In the Services window, locate the Distributed Transaction
Coordinator service under Name in the right pane.

j. In Registry Editor, locate, and then delete the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTC
k. Close Registry Editor.
l. At the command prompt, type Msdtc €“install to install MSDTC.
m. At the command prompt, type Net start msdtc to start
the MSDTC service.

Note The Log On As account for the MSDTC service is set
to the Network Service account.

2. To allow the network transaction, you must enable
MSDTC. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type dcomcnfg.exe, and then click OK.
c. In the Component Services window, expand Component
Services, expand Computers, and then expand My Computer.
d. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
e. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click
Security Configuration on the MSDTC tab.
f. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click to

computer from a remote computer, click to select the Allow Inbound check box.
h. To allow the distributed transaction to run on a
remote computer from this computer, click to select the Allow
Outbound check box.
i. Under the Transaction Manager Communication
group, click to select the No Authentication Required option.
j. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click OK.
k. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click OK.

3. Configure Windows Firewall to include the MSDTC
program and to include port 135 as an exception. To do this,
follow these steps:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
c. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Firewall.
d. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click Add
Program on the Exceptions tab.
e. In the Add a Program dialog box, click Browse,
and then locate the Msdtc.exe file. By default, the
file is stored in the Installation drive:WindowsSystem32 folder.
f. In the Add a Program dialog box, click OK.
g. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click to select
the msdtc option in the Programs and Services list.
h. Click Add Port on the Exceptions tab.
i. In the Add a Port dialog box, type 135 in the Port
number text box, and then click to select the TCP option.
j. In the Add a Port dialog box, type a name for the
exception in the Name text box, and then click OK.
k. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the name
that you used for the exception in step j in the
Programs and Services list, and then click OK.
But, when the Windows firewal on the server is "On", remote connections
are not allowed, despite I´ve configured the Exceptions on the firewall.

Is there another task to solve this problem?

thanx!!!!

I have been unable to create a replication from an SQL Server 2005 standard edition database to remote SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The remote express edition is on a Virtual Private Server we are leasing from a hosting company. The name of the remote DB is similar to vs572.si-vs572.com. I can connect to this with SQL server authentication through Management Studio and also with SSIS. But, I have been unable to create a push subscription (I have tried a test push subscription with the same publication to a local SQL Express server here in our office and this works fine).

Here is the error message: SQL Server Replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'VS572SQLEXPRESS'.

The hosting company had originally installed a shared SQL server which would not support replication. They then installed SQL Express edition and I was hoping this would allow us to run a replication.

I tried to connect to VS572SQLEXPRESS with out any luck. I check the remote connections, made sure replication was installed, etc., but no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Albert

SQL Express 2005 Remote Connection With VWD 2005 Express

Jun 22, 2006

Hi all,Just wondering if SQL 2005 express edition can be connected remotely. I've set up SQL 2005 Express on a separate machine and am having trouble connecting to it from VWD when creating the websites. Currently I've set up ASP.NET 2.0 Framework on the remote machine with IIS6 using Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. And I am directly editing the website remotely on the server machine from my PC. Could someone please help me in setting up a remote connection from VWD to the SQL Server?I've enabled TCP/IP setting in the SQL Configuration Manager but still getting errors. Could this be an issue with Express Edition? Because if it is I also have a copy of SQL Server 2005 to install. Any direction to resolve in this issue would be greatly appreciated.PS. I'm new to this so pls bear with me. Thanks.

SQL 2005 Express Local Admin Access Denied

Jan 3, 2007

I am using a standard installation of SQL 2005 Express installed with Visual C# Express. I have tried several connection strings, have tried connecting different databases, all of which end up giving me access denied for user <machineName>Greg (Greg is the local admin account for this PC. I found this guideline for connectivity questions (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=362498&SiteID=1), and have gone through it all, posting the answers to questions here. One thing that may be different about this machine is that it is a tablet PC (WinXP Tablet edition) and I am running VMWare Server. I also tried loading it on a WinXP Pro workstation with no VMWare, and have gotten the same results. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My connection string:
@"Server=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;Database=Database1");

Client error message:
Cannot open database "Database1" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'GREGBORGGreg'.

Client is local to the SQL 2005 Express - this is an application running on a local PC.

I am able to ping -a GREGBORG (as well as localhost)

I am able to telnet to port 1433 of my local machine, although Ctrl+[ does not give me an SQL prompt

I am using ADO.NET 2.0 and Visual C# 2005 Express

I have enabled Shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.

I have no alias' configured, and am not requiring encryption.

=========================
I am using SQL 2005 Express loaded on Windows XP tablet edition.

The SQL browser is not enabled, and it says that it has no enabled devices associated with it.

SQL Server is running under the Network System account

I have tried running it firewalled and not firewalled

I am running Clamwin anti-virus

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Remote Access To Named Instance

Jul 6, 2015

I try to connect from a pc to a SQL Server on another pc. Both pc’s are in a workgroup. I want to connect from a Windows Forms application to a named instance on the other computer. By now I have been able to connect from one pc to SQL Server on the other with tcp:smurfin, 52782.

I want to be able to use servernameinstancename (instead of portnumber) to make a connection in a Windows Forms application.

I’ve checked / tried te following:

•In the properties of the instance, tab Connections, the option Allow Remote Connections is enabled
•In Configuration Manager: TCP is enabled
•The service SQL Server Browser is started
•On the tab IPAddresses, in the section IPAll, there is NO portnumber for TCP Port. And TCP Dynamic Ports has the nummer 52782
•I have created un inbound rule for port 52782 and also for 1434 (SQL Server Browser). And to be on the save side: a rule for 1433 as well.
•Restarted the service

If I run the following code in SQL Server, that same port number (52782) is returned:

EXEC xp_ReadErrorLog 0, 1, N'Server is listening on', N'any', NULL, NULL, 'DESC'
GO
SELECT local_tcp_port
FROM sys.dm_exec_connections
WHERE session_id = @@SPID
....

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Setup Performance Monitor Collector On Workstation Collecting Remote Server Data?

Mar 31, 2015

I set up the collector, and specify the Run As as my AD account in the Collector Set - Properties - General screen. My AD account is the local admin of the remote server.

However, the collector does not seem to work. Although the collecting set is shown as running, the The blg file stays at 64K. If I open it, there is nothing inside (no counter at the bottom). What did I miss?
