I am new to sql in the new .net framework and recently purchased VS2005 Pro which has the Sql Developer 2005. Can I use both these together on the same box, and still create and deploy express database applications while benefiting from learning the sql developer 2005 edition?

I just installed my VS 2005 Pro (full installation) and it installed Sql Server Express 2005. I also have a CD for Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition which I have not installed yet. My need for Sql Server on my development machine is for building and testing apps - just myself - no users will be hitting my sql server on my PC. Most of the time I hit my web server's sql server but also want the engine on my PC for when I'm offline.
Question: Should I install the developer edition and remove sql server express? Doesn't the developer edition more closely emulate the full-blown sql server, just that it only allows one or a few users to hit for development and testing purposes? At the same time, sql server express is scalled back in that it doesn't have all the goodies?

Now I want to create a database using Visual Web Developer. I opened the Database Explorer and right clicked on Data Connections icon but what I am seeing is an inactive "Create new database" command.

I've downloaded and installed both of these (VWD installs both) and have been trying to run through the walkthrough of setting up a web application which supports membership. However, no matter what I do I invariably get errors like the following:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I'm concerned why VWD and VSQL express versions don't run correctly out of the box (so to speak). I'm not an expert on configuring these services -- but that's the point of offering these tools to hobbyists: So we can learn about how to make some of these great applications using MS tools.
My configuration::
Windows XP SP2 -- clean machine as of about a month ago, never had any dev tools, web servers, or the like on it.
IIS is installed and the service says its running
VSQL and VWD express versions installed (no errors on installation)
SQL server service indicates it is running
.Net 2.0 framework installed (no errors on installation)
Note: I've tried installing on two separate machines. Obviously I'm missing something fundamental.
Would someone please help me go through the million things I [apparently] need to do to configure all these tools so I can get on to actually coding up my first web application? If this is documented somewhere, all I can say is I tried to find it but it certainly wasn't obvious.
I am currently downloading the mega-sized files for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and was wondering if I was going to be able to install it onto my workstation alongside the SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition? Was hoping someone could advise. I did browse for an answer, but have not come across it yet. I know I'll find out once my download is complete, but that could be awhile :)

I installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional then after that was installed and running, I tried to install the the SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition which installed but I do not get the SQL Server 2005 Studio Manager. I have remove and reinstalled but it never gets installed. Any ideas?

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

I'm trying to make some reports using the sql 2005 reporting services addin for Visual Web Developer Express 2005. I download the add-in here. So far it installed "successfully". The problem i have is when i try to add a datasource to the report at "Report > Data Sources... " it gives me an error saying: "The system cannot find the file specified."
Another Error it gives is that when I try to drag a DataSet field from the Website Data Sources toolbox tab the visual web developer crashes :/.
An observation that I don't know if this is ok is when I create a new Data Source it creates an App_Code folder inside where my report is /Reports/ and there it saves the DataSet. Just an observation...

There are conflicting postings everywhere about this. I built a small site using VWD and SQL Server Express, but need to convert to Sql Server 2005 Developer because the DB will exceed 4Gb. Tried to install and could not connect or use from VWD. Tried to uninstall, got into large mess with the byzantine uninstall process, and have now started with a clean machine.
I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer first, then installed VWD Express 2008 without installing SQL Server Express. VWD won't let me connect to an existing database, won't let me add a new database and doesn't even show the Database Tools option under the Tools menu.
Is there someone with specific knowledge that can provide any enlightenment? Would be much appreciated.
If i have been using sql server 2005 express for developing my application and i decide to upgrade to sql server 2005 express with advanced services while still working on the same application, what will happen to my application's database. Can i be able to continue with my work with out any major regrets.

With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ?

Do I need to uninstall any any of 1 or 2?
What should be my path to upgrade these software.
I tried to install this on the same box and I'm not sure how to reply to setup questions since I want to keep my SQL Server 2000 intact.

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

I'm looking to re-jig our in-house development infrastructure and part of that will be some sort of SQL Server product, and I'm hoping it will be the Developer edition.My question is, how many copies of the Developer edition would I need to purchase, if I have one Windows 2003 server (which will server the databases) and two client machines which will use it.My initial thought is 2 copies, one for each user (as the license states). But what about the server? Do I just install one of the two copies onto the server and the license covers the two client connections?This might seem a silly question with an obvious answer to you guys. However, am I right? I have a home network that has 2 XP Pro machines on it. Can you use a SQL server 2005 DB remotely? I have the management tool on the machine that has VS 2005 but when I try to connect to SQL server I get an error. 'A connectiopn was established with the server but an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. Yes I am a newby (or is that newbie) and this is my first post.My Visual Web Developer site work really well on my PC, I read the books took it slowly, created logins and sql tables and then found a good hosting company with Server 2005 ... I though I was one step away from the road to success ... then I hit the big brick wall. Spent hours on Google trying to find some answers without joy ... all I found were lots of users with the same or similar problems ... and some answers that caused more problems !1) Please can someone give my a 'step by step' idiots guide on how to convert my ASPNETDB.MDF content to run on Server 2005. I have Server Management Studio so I am happy about loading the translated files but I don't understand how to break them down into tables and logs.2) Once the files are across can I run a connection string from VWD directly to the tables on the server instead of SQL local ? I assume that is set in web.config !!.... normally I am happy to learn by trial and error.
