I have upsized my access database to Mssql 2005 and I notice that SQL 2005 is much slower in data access than the access databse.
Is there something that needs to be done after the upsize? Have I missed something?

Wondering if anyone has any experience with SQL Server Express Edition (SSEXP). We're looking at a mobile sales force type model, so a local database on a laptop with no real time network connection. So the users would collect data locally, then connect up to the network every few days to replicate the data to a central server.
So questions.. Has anyone tried anything similar? How stable/mature is SSEXP? Any other thoughts, alternatives or gotchas anyone can think of?

I was hoping I wouldn't be another poster with performance issues after migrating to SQl 2005 from SQL 2000 but here I am.
I am in the process of testing out our databases on Sql Server 2005 for migration from SQL Server 2000 and there are certain portions of code that have been affected negatively. I have read thru many of the posts here and have tried out most of the recommendations. I will start out with things I've done and then provide the actual SQL.
1) I have rebuilt all indexes ( using the DBCC REINDEX using the table option).
2) Updated the db engine to latest hot fix (build 3239) that addresses speed related fixes.
3) I also ran sp_createstats using the 'fullscan' option to create stats on all columns of all tables (minus indexed columns)
4) Since nothing seemed to work, I even ran UPDATE STATICS with FULL SCAN on all tables even though I did not need it as the REBUILD woudl have created stats. But I was willing to try anything.
I have confirmed that the execution plans are different even though the data on both sql 2000 and sql 2005 are identical (i put a copy on 2005). The plans themselves are huge as the queries are huge. Here is the query.

The above query takes abotu 8 secs to run on 2000 and about 1 minute to run on 2005. This is for a small dataset and on larger datasets this is only going to more pronounced ( as confirmed by other teams that have already migrated in my company). Another point worth mentioning might be if I remove the TestView.* from the select list, it works in 5 to 6 seconds. Is there an issue with Sql 2005 and a large number of columns or anything of that sort? On 2000, the time remains the same , about 8 seconds if I remove this from the select list.

One difference between the two is the work table that 2005 creates versus 2000. I can attach the plans but they are huge. I will attach it if you ask.

I've installed Visual Basic 2005 express edition & tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 express edition. I noticed that VB2005 Express Edition doesn't have any OLEDB provider for SQL Server. The only OLEDB Provider is for M.Access. Is this correct? if so, what should i do if i want to connect SQL Server 2005 express edition with VB2005 express edition by using OLEDB connection type?

I have:
A server computer running SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
A industrial computer running SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
And now also a Psion WorkAboutPro with CE 5 that should run SQL Server Compact Edition.
The industrial computer syncs its data with the server, basically saying "this has happened".
Now I want the Psion to sync with the industrial computer, but this sync must two-way.
I have tried to find a guide or something that can tell me "do this to sync" but the information i have found is sketchy at best.
If someone could point me in the right direction of a guide or something else it would be much appreciated.

Hi,I am having a problem with one of my stored procedures in SQL Server 2005. Basically the proc brings back a data set for the ASP.NET front end, but it is running very slowly from .NET. I have run SQL profiler on the procedure and its taking around 20 seconds to bring back the data for the .NET, where as if I copy and paste the executed SP from profiler into the management studio and run it in a query window, it runs in around 1 second, even if I run DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS before I run it. More worryingly, the CPU usage is 40 times higher and the number of reads is 50% higher from .NET.We have the .NET front end spread over 3 clustered web servers with load balancers and the SQL db is on a dedicated rig. I am having the same problem on my locally published version of the site as well, so I don't think it's an issue with the web site.If anyone has got any ideas on this then please let me know as I am completely stuck. I should mention that the issue has only recently started occuring and it used to be fine and the rest of the site is fine...Thanks in advance Tom

I have been unable to create a replication from an SQL Server 2005 standard edition database to remote SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The remote express edition is on a Virtual Private Server we are leasing from a hosting company. The name of the remote DB is similar to vs572.si-vs572.com. I can connect to this with SQL server authentication through Management Studio and also with SSIS. But, I have been unable to create a push subscription (I have tried a test push subscription with the same publication to a local SQL Express server here in our office and this works fine).
Here is the error message: SQL Server Replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'VS572SQLEXPRESS'.
The hosting company had originally installed a shared SQL server which would not support replication. They then installed SQL Express edition and I was hoping this would allow us to run a replication.
I tried to connect to VS572SQLEXPRESS with out any luck. I check the remote connections, made sure replication was installed, etc., but no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently querying two databases - One in SQL Server and one Oracle, to find records which are in one but not the other (essentially a reconcilliation) this is working fine in MS Access, using 2 passthrough queries to return the results of the 2 databases, then another query to find the data in one but not the other.
I decided to try the linked server approach as I thought this would give me enhanced performance - but strangely enough when I query the oracle database from MS Access the query takes about 22 seconds - whereas when I query the linked server from SQL Server the same query takes about 55 seconds.
The only difernce I can see is the passthrough query in MS Access is connecting using ODBC, an the linked server is connecting using Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle.
Any ideas would be appreciated

We have a regular problem, which is most noticeable when analysing data (rather than data inserts/deletions) for producing xml or csv files or reports, even though the amount of data is relatively small. However structure of database means that there are still quite a lot of records and a lot of links between tables (database is currently being redesigned but in the mean time the problem still exists).
The problem is that access slows down dramatically and in some cases all but stops (one example is a csv file being produced where only a few lines have been output in 30 minutes). In every case the symptoms can be solved by re-booting the SQL server, after which the entire csv file is output in 10 minutes. Obviously though we wish to solve the problem and not just the symptom.
Additional information:
Transaction logs are backed up at 13:00 and in the evening (both periods of very low usage).Full backup is run in the evening and at 13:00 (both periods of very low usage), with integrity check performed prior to full backup. Database is optimized after the full backup including shrinking the database leaving 15% of the data space free.
I am currently downloading the mega-sized files for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and was wondering if I was going to be able to install it onto my workstation alongside the SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition? Was hoping someone could advise. I did browse for an answer, but have not come across it yet. I know I'll find out once my download is complete, but that could be awhile :)

I have installed SQL server 2005 express edition with SQL server Management studio express (SSMSE).
I have installed also SQLce and I would know how I can manage sql compact edition databases (.ldf) with sql SSMSE, if it is possible!
I would be grateful if you could explain it trought a detailed guide (I am a beginner user of sql server tools) or trought a link to useful sites.

I am having major performance issues with Microsoft SQL 2005 x64 Standard Editions performance on Windows Server 2003 x64. The PC has two quad core cpu's with 8gb of ram and running a 500gb mirrored SCSI (Raid 1) drive system. The database running on the server is about 11gb. I've run a defrag several times which helps a little but I was hoping I could do something else to increase the performance.
I have also found that the bottle neck in the SSIS package is the backup and restore process of an 11gb database which takes about 1 hour (backup takes 1 hour and restore takes 1 hour) when it should take about 11 minutes. Is there anything I can do to make these processes run faster or to find out why they are taking so long? Any ideas would be a great help.

Executing a select query with left outer joins etc takes .53 seconds to execute on sqlce 2.0.
Same query on sql 2005 mobile ed. takes 11 minutes .

I had SQL Server Express Edition installed. I then uninstalled both it and Visual C#. I then installed SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition and reinstalled Visual C# -- both on the same machine. I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. I can select .MSSQLSERVER, but when I click on either OK or Test Connection, I time out with an error message -- error 25 - Connection string is not valid. The connection string that is shown at the bottom of the Advanced dialog box is -- Data Source=.MSSQLSERVER;AttachDbFilename=E:InventoryDataInventory_Data.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True

I ran the same query and found that it ran in less than asecond.I took a look at the query execution plan and I found that they we'rethe exact same in both cases.Then I took a look at the various index's, and again I found nodifferences in the table indices.If both databases are identical, I'm assumeing that the issue isrelated to some external hardware issue like: disk space, memory etc.Or could it be OS software related issues, like service packs, SQLServer configuations etc.Here's what I've done to rule out some obvious hardware issues on theprod server:1. Moved all extraneous files to a secondary harddrive to free up spaceon the primary harddrive. There is 55gb's of free space on the disk.2. Applied SQL Server SP4 service packs3. Defragmented the primary harddrive4. Applied all Windows Server 2003 updatesHere is the prod servers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.67GHZTotal Physical Memory 2GB, Available Physical Memory 815MBWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1Here is the dev serers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz2GB DDR2-SDRAMWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1I'm not sure what else to do, the query performance is an order ofmagnitude difference and I can't explain it. In my installation here, I have the security database ASPNETDB.mdb and to keep things independent and robust, I created another database MYDATADB.mdb.
Now, I have a requirement to maintain a custom USERS table in MYDATADB. To meet this requirement, I tried creating an ON INSERT trigger on the ASPNET_USERS table.
However, when I say 'INSERT INTO MYDATADB.dbo.USERS ......', within the trigger body, I get an error saying 'Invalid object'. It seems that MYDATADB is not visible from ASPNETDB. Could there be any other reason for this error?
Are these two databases similar to separate servers? Do I have to create a server group or something -- or a data link of some sort? Please advise and thanks!

I am building an application using sql server express. The .mdf file is located in my appdata directory and connection string is stored in the web.config. Here is an the connection string

The application runs great locally on my personal computer debugging with Visual Studio 2005 but when i put it on our dev server i get the following error. I would use full blown Sql 2005 but our client doesnt have it. I thought if you had sql 2005 installed on the server you didnt have to install the express edition. Any insight?

Currently have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed. Wanted to install reporting services, but wouldn't let me re no IIS as I only have Windows XP Home Edition.
My question is therefore: Is there any way of installing IIS to allow me to install Reporting Services for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition onto my PC on the D: drive, it seems it wants to connect to the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server directory but I want to change it to D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server
I change the template.ini file in the source folder to reflect the following (I tried both with and without quotes)
INSTALLSQLDIR="D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server"
When I run setup it still gives me the error on the C: drive, can someone please show me how to point this setup.exe file to install on the D: drive.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Ex.Ed. sp1. To upgrade to SP2, I have first to uninstall my SQL Server and then reinstall???
Isn't there a patch for SP2, that I don't have to uninstall?
If I try to install "SQLEXPR32_DEU.EXE" anyway, I receive the following message:
