SQL Server 2005 Fail Installation On Cluster
Sep 27, 2007
Hi,
A few months ago, I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 on a cluster (Active-Active), the Cluster has 3 instances, 2 lives in one node and the other one in the other node. When I try to make the deployment an error message appear, I do not have the error right now but it€™s something like €œCould not connect to the passive node, installation failed€?. The worst part of the error was all instances shut down and I couldn€™t bring on line and I have to reinstall all instances. I need to install SP2 but I€™m a little afraid fail again. Do you know the best way to deploy the SP2 on a cluster? Maybe move all instances in one node before install SP2? Can you help me with your comments. Do you think I have problems with the windows cluster?
Thanks and Regards,

When the setup program tries to start the database service (the last step of installation), it indicates an error 29503.
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is (17058)
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All,
We have been experiencing issues with SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade on cluster servers.
After running the setup, it gives failure message for Database services.
Installing SP2 on 64bit cluster server we get error regarding "passive node not patched properly or run the setup from passive node". However, select serverproperty(€˜productlevel€™) returns the output as "SP2". On more digging we found from SQL Server Error log, that the resourcedb of that server is of level 9.0.0.3199
€œThe resource database build version is 9.00.1399. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.€?
However if we do the SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade on standalone machines with the same software repository, it upgrades successfully and also resourcedb upgraded to 3042 version. So if we look at the errorlog of a standalone machine it gives following message.
"The resource database build version is 9.00.3042. This is an informational message only. No user action is required."
I again reiterate that, this is the issue we have faced on 64bit SQL Server 2005 SP2 upgrade only on cluster SQL Servers, however on standalone machine it works fine and 32bit SP2 installation works fine.
Please let us know the solution for this.
regards
Jay Mehta

Hi Everyone,
I have problem when installing SQL 2005 Enterprise to my Windows 2003 R2 cluster. I install the SQL instance on the first node in my cluster, it analyses the cluster and comes up with no errors or warnings, i answer all the installation questions and proceed with the installation. When installing the SQL engine I see the status changing as the instance is started and then stopped again etc, finally the status changes to "removing backup files" when it get an error that reports:
"The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. The error is: The specified module could not be found."
Unfortunately there isnt any more information to go on. Any help would be appreciated.

I tried installing SQL 2005 Dev Edition on my Win 2000 Professional machine. That failed. But now I cannot send out emails or even open a simple Email task from DTS. This is something that worked perfectly fine before I attempted the SQL 2005 installation. It seems that the SQL 2005 installation somehow messed up the the MAPI profile. The exact error message that I get when trying to execute or open a Email task in DTS is: CAnnot load MAPI Interface layer for DTS. Please make sure that semmap90.dll is installed.

I noticed in installing a SQL2005 failover cluster instance, that it is not necessary to install on both servers. Installing on the primary node automagically installs to the secondary node. Does this constitute a COMPLETE install? It all seems to work. BUT this process does not intall client pieces (SSMS, for instance) on the secondary node. If you want that stuff there, do you then go to that box and just do a client install?

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
Â
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).Â
2. net stop winmgmtÂ
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).Â
4. net start winmgmt
2ndÂ Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Â Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â sc config winmgmt start= autoÂ
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command:Â Â Â Â mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"

I am learning SQL Server failover cluster installation. My question is regarding the options to install failover cluster instances on the Windows Failover Cluster. I have seen ead there are two options to do so.
From the installation center, installation option-> New SQL Server installation option and afterwards add node to SQL Server failover instance. From Installation Center, Advanced option-> Failover cluster preparation and then Failover cluster completion step. What is the difference between these two options and which option to use in which scenario?

When adding a node to a SQL Server 2012 Standard edition cluster, how I do I identify the location for SQL server shared components and the rest of the SQL Server installation binaries?
When adding a node to a SQL Server 2012 Standard edition cluster all the binaries went to the C: drive default location. We put those files on a different drive when installing the first node. What needs to be done so both nodes have the binaries on the same drives and folders?

I have a Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 edition cluster setup and functioning normally. Now, I am trying to get SQL Server 2000 installed as a failover cluster but am having some difficulty. When installing, I get the message '[sqsrvres] ODBC sqldriverconnect failed' in the event log. The message happens when the installer is trying to bring the SQL Server Service resource online.
I am able to ping the name of the instance successfully. I am able to manually start the 'MSSQL$InstanceName' service. I have turned off the firewall on both machines, but this did not help. I have the DTC Service setup as a resource in the same cluster group.
I also read http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815431 which seemed promising, but did not reolve the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Andy

Hi
We are planning to upgrade the SQL Server in our production environment from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. This is a 4 Node cluster environment with 3 Databases on 3 Virtual instances. The main requirement is to achieve this with no/minimal downtime.
Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?
Thanks
Priyanka

I have sql 2000 sp4 running on a cluster, we had to fail over to other cluster, and now the sql agent choice to use a mail profile is grayed out. I can go to sql mail and test the profile and it works, but I can't change it for the sql agent? Anyone seen this before

My environment is a 64 bit Windows Server 2012 Standard edition that is running SQL Server 2012 SP1 Standard Edition (64 bit) which has an Active Passive Cluster set up and I unfortunately had no involvement in this cluster build. The person who did is no longer with the company and is not responsive to questions.
This morning this following errors popped up:
Event ID: 1230 - Cluster resource 'Databases' (resource type 'Physical Disk', DLL 'clusres.dll') did not respond to a request in a timely fashion. Cluster health detection will attempt to automatically recover by terminating the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process running this resource. This may affect other resources hosted in the same RHS process. The resources will then be restarted.
The suspect resource 'Databases' will be marked to run in an isolated RHS process to avoid impacting multiple resources in the event that this resource failure occurs again. Please ensure services, applications, or underlying infrastructure (such as storage or networking) associated with the suspect resource is functioning properly.
Event ID: 1146 - The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) stopped unexpectedly. An attempt will be made to restart it. This is usually associated with recovery of a crashed or deadlocked resource. Please determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue and verify it is functioning properly.
When I saw these errors, I brought the "Databases", "Logs", and "Quorom" disks back online and all was well. I then proceeded to check Application and System Logs noticing there where some VMWare/SAN errors that caused the CPU spike resulting in the Cluster errors.
Regarding the questions, why didn't a failover occur and What can I do to mitigate this process are now what I am focusing on. Researching the above errors, I discovered that you could a policy based what happens in a situation like occurred this morning. You can set policies at the Role level, "Server" level, and at the disk level.
The Role Policy seems to be a little less involved, screenshot RoleProperties.png show these. I assume these are defaults. The server name properties are set to the following screenshot, Servername_Properties_Policy.png. This seems to be correct to me, but there is where I am lacking. I think this means that if it fails at this level all associated resources, disks, etc will failover to node 2.Now where I think the issue is, the third screenshot, Database_Properties_Policy.png. There is no policy set to for situation where a disk resource fails. Which I believe is what happened this morning. Some questions:
1. Do I need to set this similar to what is in the ServerName screenshot?
2. What happens if I check the box for "If restart is unsuccessful, fail over all resources in the role"? Will this only fail over this one disk? If so, it doesn't seem like that would be ideal. Would it fail over at the Role level and move over all associated resources?
I am also not sure what time limits I should set for Period restarts, maximum restarts, delay between restarts, etc...

I have had a serious issue with a production AlwaysOn cluster whereby the service did not successfully transition to the secondary node and I cannot find the root cause of the issue.
Some details: It is a 2 node cluster (same datacenter) with a shared disk quorum, Windows Server 2012, both are virtual machines running on VMWare vSphere  5.5. SQL Server version is 2012 Enterprise SP2 CU6
The failover occurred because of a network incident (a spanning tree recalculation caused a connection timeout between both nodes). Initial entries in the SQL Log look normal for this event, for example:
05/08/2015 11:18:06:Â A connection timeout has occurred on a previously established connection to availability replica 'FIN-IE-PA078' with id [6910F4A9-87E7-4836-BA79-0F41BE90266D]. Â Either a networking or a firewall issue exists or the availability replica has transitioned to the resolving role.
05/08/2015 11:18:06:Â AlwaysOn Availability Groups connection with secondary database terminated for primary database 'UserManagement' on the availability replica with Replica ID: {6910f4a9-87e7-4836-ba79-0f41be90266d}. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.
[code]....
My interpretation of this is that the cluster failover attempts failed, because the network condition still persisted. The network interruption lasted approximately 2 minutes, and I would have expected the cluster to come back online at this point, after the restart delay period as suggested in the last entry in the error log. However this did not happen.

Due to a SQL 2014 cluster installation failure related to security while setting up the primary node, I had to remove the node and any related installation programs from the node and redo the installation again. However I am unable to use the machine name as the SQL network name during the instance configuration, I get the following:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.InputSettingValidationException: The SQL Server failover cluster instance name "MachineName" already exists as a server on the network. Specify a different failover cluster instance name.I am still getting the same name since the node name "MachineName" is listed under the cluster name. I have used machine name as SQL network name without an issue. I do not have any existing SQL machine name in network using same machinename which I want to use for this installation.

We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.
What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?
1. Break the link between the servers.
2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.
3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.
4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.
Thoughts?
