SQL Server 2005 Install Hangs - Does MS Plan To Fix?

Oct 19, 2006

I am experiencing extremely slow behavior (no activity for > 30 mins) during a SS 2005 Dev Edition install on XP SP2 on various steps during the SQL Server Database Services step - e.g. during "Setting File Security". This is very annoying.

I've found many postings on this issue indicating that OS calls in this part of the install (e.g. LookupAccountName()) are network speed dependent.

Does Microsoft have any plans to rework this part of the install to rid the need of these calls? I really wish the install would be possible without these calls - it's driving me crazy monitoring this for hours. We've got to roll SS2005 out to a couple hundred developers eventually and this isn't going to cut it.

Thanks for your time on this matter.

Best Regards,

Mike

SQL Server 2005 64 Bit Hangs At Install.

Aug 10, 2007

Just purchased a new server, and am trying to install SQL Server 2005 standard, 64 bit. I'm running Windows Server 2005 r2 64 bit.

Setup support files installs fine.
System configuration passes all 14 checks.
Then it moves to install and just hangs there. Eventually, perhaps maybe after 20-30 minutes does it create a message saying that the Install has failed to respond. Retry or cancel.

Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 - Removing Backup Files Hangs

Oct 6, 2007

HELP!

For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.

For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.

After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.

Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Marc Mueller

Sql 7.0 Install Hangs

Jun 5, 2001

I have been trying all day to install SQL 7.0 on an NT 4.0 SP6a server. It gets to the point where it wants to load MDAC and just goes out to lunch. No errors are generated and the rest of the system does not appear to be affected. However, the only way to end the install is to end task it. Has anyone run into this?

MSDE Hangs On Install

Jan 12, 2005

First off, let me say it took me nearly all day to get this working. When you download the sql2decksp3.exe you might think it install like any other program. No. This exe simply unpacks the setup files. The actual setup program, setup.exe must be run from a DOS command prompt.... so you've got to look up the correct command line parameters in the sp3reademe.htm file. Something like:

setup INSTANCENAME="InstanceName" SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD="AStrongSAPwd"

No problem so far, but then when I go to run the setup.exe with the correct parameters the install goes fine until the last 5 seconds. Then hangs. Again and again. The install program keep getting hung up just before the finish. Each time I had to uninstall and reinstall-- 6 times. When if it hangs you've got to break out with the Task Manager, then do an uninstall from the Control Panel... if... an entry there was created. It usually is.

I tried everything I could think of and then did a search here. There were a few messages. The only one who actually got past this problem said he deleted all references for "Microsoft SQL" in the registry. I tried that too. It didn't work for me. That setup hung in the very same place. Then instead of breaking out and starting again, I tried shutting the machine down, while the setup was hung, thinking that maybe after a restart the installation might continue AND and that point the install completed.

Hope these notes help the next person who runs into the same problem. I also tried putting the modem on standby and disabling Norton anti-virus. Alone that did help, but when I tried all this stuff together... finally at 4:34 PM, I was able to establish a connection, from both VB.NET and with a great FREE MS SQL Manager at http://sqlmanager.net/products/mssql/manager/download

Now I can start. For some reason, the way I think... I can't do any coding until the entire database spec is first set up. Then you write all the add, edit, display and sort form, windows. When designing web applications, you design the database first, then each web form preforms some unique operation or reference on the remote database. I think that's the way it works.

Hey! Hope this helps others.

MSDE Install Hangs -- Any Ideas?

Apr 30, 2004

I installed MSDE. Then I changed the name of my machine. Then I uninstalled MSDE, so I could create a new, properly-named instance.

Now, when I try to install, the installer gets about 75% of the way through the "gathering information" stage, and hangs, every time. I have to kill it with Task Manager.

Help! What can I do?

Extra info: I thought maybe the problem was related to Norton AV, so I uninstalled that. While that was uninstalling, the installer announced that there was a "suspended" install of MSDE that needed to be cleared. So I said, yes, clear it. How do I find out if there are other suspended installs in progress?

Thanks...

SQL 2000 Enterprise Hangs Upon Install

May 19, 2004

Hi,

I hope someone out there can help, cos i really need it.
We have a 2 node cluster + SAN that will be used as our SQL 2000 servers.
We have setup the cluster ok, and have tested failover with no problems.
However, when we try to install SQL 2000, it just hangs.
I have copied the enterprise cd to the local drive, and am installing from there.
We run the setup.bat, create the Virtual Server, and assign an ip address. At this point, it just hangs.
Upon checking the SQLSTP.LOG file, this is the last entry in the log:
Begin Action : DialogShowSdDiskGroups

I have found the Microsoft Technet Article 293788, which gives me a possible soloution, but we dont have any Resource Names or Groups that have the same name.

Can someone PLEASE give me an answer on how to fix this, or at least point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks

Darren

Debugging SQL CLR Hangs With SQL Server 2005 And VS 2005

Apr 2, 2007

Hello,

I am having a problem with SQL Server (Express) hanging during simple debugging of CLR code. I created a test project with a user defined function, and call this from the test script. The output log shows that the sqlservr.exe was auto-attached successfully, and then the everything hangs. I have to terminate debugging in order to regain control, and this takes perhaps a minute or two.

Any ideas?

HELP Sql Server 2005 Express Connection Hangs Up

Apr 9, 2007

Hi

I got an access 2002 application front end with a sql server 2005 express back end. Some of my clients are having some difficulties. After using the application for a while, some of the users are finding that the system just hangs up. It usually happens after the front end application has been running for about an hour (sometimes sooner and sometimes later). There are perhaps 1 to 5 concurrent users and I have checked to see if there are any firewalls stalling it (I think I check all of them)- Is there any way that SQL Server 2005 express could be caused to just stall- This even occurs with the odd laptop. All the appropriate protocols are enabled as well. These databses are not very large.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRETIATED!!!

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Install Keeps Failing To Install SQL Services (i.e. The Main Engine!).

I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

SQL Server 2005 Installation Failure On Vista - Hangs At IIS

Feb 16, 2007

I just bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed and was able to install Visual Studio 2005 Pro, but when attempting to install SQL Server 2005 it just hangs at the IIS detection step. I was using the administrative account. I was able to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2000, but I need 2005.

Some posts mention IIS version issues and 32 vs 64 bit version issues. Can anyone ellaborate on what is happening and why? What is the work around?

SQL Server 2005 SP1 Installation Hangs At Authentication Verification

May 9, 2006

After the installer has asked for authentication mode and has started verifying the authentication it simply hangs. I've let it sit there for an hour before taking the installer forcibly down but nothing seems to be happening except for two osql.exe processes showing up in the task manager.

I've tried both windows authentication and SQL server authentication but the outcome is always the same. At the same time I'm, however, able to login to the database engine and all services with management studio using both authentication modes.

The last few lines in HotFix.log are as follows:

05/09/2006 09:49:09.999 Authenticating user using Windows Authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.015 SQL Service MSSQLServer was previously running, ready for authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.218 SQL Agent Service SQLSERVERAGENT was previously running
05/09/2006 09:49:12.093 User authentication was successful

This would indicate that there's nothing wrong with the authentication but with whatever is supposed to take place after that.

There are quite a few lines in the log similar to the one below:

05/09/2006 09:47:08.438 Failed to read associated hotfix build information for the following file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBinnSQLServr.exe

Redist9_Hotfix_KB913090.log seems to be the only individual log file that ends with line saying "Hotfix package launched" whereas all other logs have several lines of checks being completed successfully.

Any ideas what might be causing the installer to hang and how to fix it?

SQLAgent - TSQL Jobs Hangs (SQL Server 2005)

Aug 15, 2007

I have two tables
t_DTM_DATA_STAGING around 2 million records
t_DTM_DATA around 251 million records

The below SQL statement looks for records in the t_DTM_DATA_STAGING table that are not in the t_DTM_DATA table and adds them to a 3rd table. (t_DTM_DATA_STAGING2)

This statement has been running fine for weeks, but now it seems to get hung every day. I ran sp_Who2 and it says the status is runnable. I let it run for around 5 or 6 hours the other day to see if it will finish but it didn't. This SQL job is step 3 in a 6 step SQLAgent job that usually finishes in 30 to 45 minutes.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. No other jobs are running at the time this job runs.

Could this SQL statement be written a better way?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

SQL Server 2005 Installation Hangs On Removing Temporary Files Step

Feb 2, 2007

I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:

OWC11

SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files

SQL Server Database Services

Reporting Services

Visual Studio Integrated Development

SQL Server Books Online

SQLXML4

Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.

The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.

I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.

De-install And Re-install Problems SQL Server 2005

Feb 15, 2007

I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005.
After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports.
Regards,

Jan J

Updating A Single Column On A Table SQL Server 2005 (45 Records), The Session Hangs...

May 12, 2007

Hello, I am pretty new with SQL Server 2005.

I have installed SQL Server Express Edition. I have migrated a set of tables from Oracl10g (by using Microsoft's Migration Tool Kit). While I am trying the following simple update command, the session hangs and it never finishes !!!!!!!!!!!!

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

select pos_key from pos_station where staff_key = 1105

POS_KEY
=======
NULL

update pos_station set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The table has a few constraints and a couple of indices in place.

Then I create another table (but no contraints or indices), just copy the data from the problematic one and the update WORKS (in msecs) :

update pos_station_new set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Is there any way to tell if the table (any table in SQL Server) is corrupted or not ?

How can I tell if a session is waiting for something and what is that something ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Downgrade Install Plan

Mar 21, 2006

We are upgrading an application that is not yet supported on SQL Server 2005. The upgrade involves new hardware (including a new sql server). Any gotchas or advice regarding this plan:

1. Install Windows 2003 64 bit, configure hardware appropriately for running SQL Server.

2. Install SQL Server 2000 64 bit using the 2005 license key (is that how you 'downgrade'? I didn't see a 'how-to' article regarding this).

3. Restore backups of system databases from current SQL Server to new SQL Server (note: current SQL Server is running 32 bit - I realize that I need to make sure that I have the same service pack on the new server as that on the current server).

4. Apply sp4.

5. Restore user databases.

Not sure if the 32 vs. 64 bit thing is of any concern or if 'downgrading' is as simple as this.

Thanks!

Maintenance Plan Bug On SQL Server 2005

Oct 4, 2007

Hello, everyone:

I have a strange trouble on SQL Server 2005 on XP/local and Win 2003/server. When I connect local database and create a backup plan named by "backup plan", I can see the name under "maintenance plan" and "Jobs" under SQL Server Agent. But if I connect to server database and do the samething, I cannot see the name under "maintenance plan". I can see the name under "Jobs" under SQL Server Agent. But cannot delete this job, and message:

Drop failed for job "Backup Plan".(Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo).

Did someone meet this bug and have suggestions?

Thanks

Query Plan In SQL Server 2005 SP2

Aug 14, 2007

Hello,

The query included at the end of this post seems to use the 'wrong' index when executing and takes 2+ minutes to run. When I provide an index hint, it runs in under 1 second. This happens in both the Production and Development environments; both servers run SQL Server 2005 SP2.

When I run both the queries together in Query Analyzer (or SSMS), the Query Cost (relative to the batch) value for the query with the index hint = 83.24%.

Profiler stats for Original Query:

Duration = 130484 ms
CPU = 111141 ms
Reads = 85470

Profiler stats for Index Hint Query:

Duration = 64 ms
CPU = 687 ms
Reads = 5558

Statistics are updated every night (w/Fullscan)
Indexes are rebuilt/defragmented daily based on fragmentation levels.

What am I missing here/how do I fix this performance issue?
Doesn't Profiler take into account the "Subtree Cost" for the Index Seek (which Query Analyzer & SSMS consider to be so expensive)? What Events/Columns do I need to include in the Profiler trace to see this statistic when the query is executing?

Thanks much,
Smitha

Can't Seem To Install SQL Server 2005? Install Completes, But Where Is SQL Server 2005

Apr 8, 2007

I went to one of the Microsoft "Ready To Launch" events over a year ago. Microsoft was gracious and gave everyone who attended a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. I have installed the Visual Studio and use it all of the time. I also installed the SQL server 2005 but I can not find the application on my computer. After the install the only items that appear to have been installed are the following:
SQL Server Configuration tools(SQL Server Configuration manager,SQL Server  Error and usage reporting, SQL Server surface area confiuration, Reporting Services configuration). There is also a menu icon labeled "Microsoft SQL server upgrade advisor" and SQL server upgraded wizard.
That is all. I can't find anything that is analogus to the Enterprise manager that was in SQL server 2000 or anything that is analogous to Query Analyzer of 2005.

Can someone help me out? We use SQL server 2005 so I know how it looks. I just can't see where it insalled. I don't think it did?

Dl-380 Server Hangs With Erp - Sql-server 2005 Db And 2003 Server

Aug 19, 2007

We have recently migrated from an HP server to a new one, HP DL-380, 6 Disks ( 2 o.s. Mirror 1 + 3 database Mirror 5 + 1 Hot spare ), we instaled Windows 2003 Server, SQL-SERVER 2005 SP2 ( the old one had SQL-SERVER 2000 ) and we are runing and ERP systems that runs with Sql-Server.

We instaled the server and the soft and run it in production about a month ago, since almost the first day, the server hangs up when we run some random parts of the ERP program.

We request hp to change the mother, check the memories, the procesor, etc they told as that this isn't a hardware issue.

After further research we found that the only clue in this problem, the only big diffrence between the old server and the new one, ( among the Sql-Server version ) is that the Collation sequence is differnt, the server has ModernSpanish, the database is using SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, the same that has almost all other clients instalations.

We are not sure if the source of the prolbem is this, but we are runing out of ideas here. We change the Sql-Server user name that runs the process, created a new one. Again the same result.

Can anybody help with this ?

SQL Server 2005 Choosing A Wrong Execution Plan

Jan 15, 2007

Hi
I am having a query
SELECT Dur1.rootId
FROM DurableEventTab Dur1
WHERE (Dur1.dev_ReferenceClusterRoot = 'iyrwd.52' )
AND Dur1.dev_Action = 'Order:Ordered')
AND (Dur1.dev_Active = 1) AND (Dur1.dev_PurgeState = 0)
AND (Dur1.dev_PartitionNumber = 0)

This table has a primary key : aribapk11
and the indexes on the dev_ReferenceClusterRoot,
dev_Action,dev_purgestate .

Now when I fire this query
the query execution plan is actaull doing a Clustered Index scan on the PK :aribaPK11 . What I was expecting was an index seek on the key defined on dev_referenceClusterRoot. Please not the index seek is the behaviour in sql server 2000.

Any idea what is going wrong ?

Clustered Index Scan(OBJECT:([typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[AribaPK7] AS [Dur1]), WHERE:([typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_Active] as [Dur1].[dev_Active]=(1.) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_PurgeState] as [Dur1].[dev_PurgeState]=(0) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_PartitionNumber] as [Dur1].[dev_PartitionNumber]=(0) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_ReferenceClusterRoot] as [Dur1].[dev_ReferenceClusterRoot]='iyrwd.52' AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_Action] as [Dur1].[dev_Action]=N'Order:Ordered')) 0 0 Clustered Index Scan Clustered Index Scan OBJECT:([typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[AribaPK7] AS [Dur1]), WHERE:([typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_Active] as [Dur1].[dev_Active]=(1.) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_PurgeState] as [Dur1].[dev_PurgeState]=(0) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_PartitionNumber] as [Dur1].[dev_PartitionNumber]=(0) AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_ReferenceClusterRoot] as [Dur1].[dev_ReferenceClusterRoot]='iyrwd.52' AND [typhoon1902].[dbo].[DurableEventTab].[dev_Action] as [Dur1].[dev_Action]=N'Order:Ordered') [Dur1].[rootId] 1 0.00386574 0.0002263 71 0.00409204 [Dur1].[rootId] PLAN_ROW 0 1

Maintenance Plan For SQL Server 2005 64-bit Doesn't Work!

Jul 5, 2007

Hi all,
We have a SQL Server 2005 64-bit, and recently I upgrade from build 3042 to 3054 and I try to do a maintenance plan for transaction logs(TL) backup, including cleanup for two days (have full backup every night).

Problem I have is that I want the TL files to dump in a different location(due to disk space), so I put in the UNC path in the "Create a backup file for every database - >Folder:\FileServerTLDBLogs"

NB: if using the local drives, it work

Check List
Security:
- The account that I used to create the plan is an sa account
- The location that I dump the TL files, I have full access to the folder

SQL Statement:
exec xp_cmdshell 'dir FileServerTLDBLogs' (it list all files)

Is this a bug for 64-bit? because I can do this on SQL Server 2005 32-bit and it's work perfectly
