SQL Server 2005 Limitation: Having Many Attributes For Neural Network
May 21, 2007
Hello,
Say that I have 100,000 attributes/feature selections for my SQL Server Neural Network Algorithm.
Customer Attr1 Attr2 Attr3 ..... Atr100000
==============================
Jack 1 0 1 ..... 1
Sam 0 1 1 ...... 0
Mary 1 1 0 ...... 1
Knowing the fact I can't fit those info on a table and SQL Server's Neural Network does not support table prediction . What's an alternative to use Neural Network in SQL Server 2005 to solve my problem?
Please assist!
Mary

Hi!
I bought the book €œData Mining with SQL Server 2005€?, but I can€™t find the solution to a problem I have.
I want to retrieve from C# the logistic regression Attribute Value (AV) Scores for the Logistic Regression Algorithm. I can see the Scores from the Microsoft Logistic Regression Viewer (the same of Neural Network Viewer), but I cannot retrieve them via DMX, OLEDB or similar.
Otherwise, is there a formula that I can use to compute that score from the coefficient, support, or probability values of the Attribute Value pair (I can read this values from DMX)?
I can access to them via DMX:
NODE_DISTRIBUTION -> SUPPORT and PROBABILITY ATTRIBUTE_VALUE...
with a query like
SELECT FLATTENED (SELECT ATTRIBUTE_NAME, ATTRIBUTE_VALUE FROM NODE_DISTRIBUTION WHERE VALUETYPE = ... ) FROM [MyModel].CONTENT WHERE NODE_TYPE ....
Thanks in advance
Regards,
Marco

I have two problems while trying to train a neural network.
My network have 10 continuous input ad 1 discrete output (3 states)
The parameters I chose are :
-Hidden node ratio 10
-Holdout percentage 10
The others are default.
First, when i train it thanks to BI dev studio, the training is very fast (less than 5 seconds) and the results compared with the training set are bad (at least 30% of errors). Is there a way to improve the training (I don't care about the time required to train if it works)?
Second, I decided to train the network using SQL server management studio and I get this error which I can't understand : "Les connexions ad hoc telles que spécifiées dans des clauses OPENROWSET ne peuvent pas être utilisées sur ce serveur". Translated it may be something like "this server can't use ad hoc connections such as specified in OPENROWSET".
My query is :
INSERT INTO MINING model [Associations Learn2]([From Requete1],[From Requete2],
[Keywords1],[Keywords2],[Nb Apparition1],[Nb Apparition2],[Nombre Requete Distincte],[Probabilite],[Titre1],[Titre2],[Type],[Uid])
OPENROWSET
('SQLNCLI.1','Data Source=STAG-XP-EDITION;user=sa;password=***;Initial Catalog=OpenFind_StockagePreNeurone',
'SELECT [From Requete1],[From Requete2],
[Keywords1],[Keywords2],[Nb Apparition1],[Nb Apparition2],[Nombre Requete Distincte],
[Probabilite],[Titre1],[Titre2],[Type],[Uid] FROM associationsLearn2'
)
Could someone explain me the error?

General data mining books talk about NN taking inputs which are between -1 and 1. Even Jamie's book says that's what it generally receives. I don't think this is a requirement for the Microsoft algorithm, but I wanted to ask if it was a best practice. If you're feeding it something like home values where 99% of homes are under $1 million you can use some normalization trick so that mansions don't skew the data. But if your data doesn't need such normalization, is there any need to normalize it to the -1 to 1 range?
Also, is the Microsoft algorithm sensitive to the relative size of different inputs? For instance, if InputA is home size (500-50,000 square feet) and InputB is months unoccupied (0-24 months), does that cause the Microsoft NN to weigh home size more heavily?

Hello , using MS Visual studio 2005 , I deployed sql table with NN algorithm , it successfuly deployed . But when I tabbed to "Mining Model Viewer" it gave me the following error :
The following system error occurred: Invalid procedure call or argument.
Execution of the managed stored procedure GetAttributeScores failed with the following error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.Microsoft::AnalysisServices::AdomdServer::AdomdException.
what can I do ?

Hello there,
I'm working with Analysis sevices 2005 developer edition. Looking through the documentation i becomes apperent that the NN algorithm takes 255 input attributes by default. This can be changed to any integer value, OK....
My problem is that I want to feed the network with 40000 input variables. In order to do so, I will have to do a select:
SELECT fld1, fld2, ...... fld39999, fld40000
FROM tblSometable
However, this is not possible, as the books online describes it is only possible to return 4096 columns from a select statement.
Question : How do I populate a NN in AS2005, with nmore than 4096 inputs ?!

I have read the threads regarding the Neural Network Viewer and I think I have a similar problem. I do have Service Pack 2 installed and I'm running the x64 version of SQL 2005.
I'm building a model from a single relational CASE table. Granted the table has many columns summarized at the customer level but there are it is well formed and has no NULL values (plenty of zero or blank values though). The only time I can get the NN Viewer to work is when I accept the attribute recommendations. It seems once I stray from these recommendation, even if there is still correlation with an attribute, I cannot view the model using the NN Viewer. My latest error message says:
"The provider could not determine the String value. For example, the row was just created, the default for the String column was not available, and the consumer had not yet set a new String value."
I get this message even when all input attributes are Continuous so I'm not sure what String column it is referring to.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm in a time crunch and I have sold the client on SQL Server 2005 capabilities. It's a bit embarrasing if I can't get this resolved.
-- Steve
P.S.: I don't recall having any issues with the NN Viewer prior to Service Pack 2 (although others have). Have you done regression testing to test this issue?

Hi, all,
What can we tell from the lift value of the attribute value in Neural Network? (any so-called threshold of this lift value which identifies whether or not an attribute value is important or whatever to the selecte output attribute value?) I mean with lift value of a particular value, when we describe the characteristics of a segmentaion with Neural network, what can we actually describe it?
I just dont know what can we desribe this for the segmentation by neural network viewer?
I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly and thansk a lot.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

Hi, all,
I am confused about the value of Probability of Value 1 or 2 (on a particular attribute value) in Neural Network viewer. E.g. the value of Probability of value 1 is actually very low (the same to the value of Probability of value 2), but why the bar which shows the strength of the probability of these two values are still so strong even stronger than other values of probability of value 1 or 2 based on other attribute values which have a much higher probability of value 1 or 2?
And how does the algorithm calculate the Probability of attribute value in nerual network by the way?
Hope my question is clear.
I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly and thanks a lot in advance.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

I am in the process of training a Neural Networks, which could take significant iterations in the process of getting trained. While using other tools like I can visually see the convergence (in terms of error for the model). Is there a way to see any progress while training while using Analysis Server - Neural Network training? It would be useful to see the accuracy, interation number and timeout while in the process of training etc...
Thanks

I've successfully created and processed a very simple neural network mining model (defined against a cube). However, when I go to the model viewer in BI studio, it displays the following error:
"Execution of the managed stored procedure GetAttributeScores failed with the following error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.Input string was not in a correct format.."
Any ideas about what's going wrong? This is with SQL Server 2005 SP1.

I am working in SQL Server Master Data Services  Version 11.0.5058.0 (SP 2).
I have been asked to group all the financial attributes together. Â When I move one of the attributes up using the arrows, it works good jumping over one attribute at a time. Â Then I reach a section of attributes where it leap frogs over 24 attributes.
It appears these 24 attributes are in a subgroup but there are no attribute groups and I removed the subscription view from the entity. Â If I move one of the 24 attributes in the group, it moves it outside of the 24 attributes.
This is under leaf member attributes. Â There are no collection or consolidated groups.

I'm using a DW from Northwind database to build a cube to do some analitical taks. I already create the cube and now I am "cleaning" the dimensions. I'm having some difficults to understand the logical off this part. The reason is that When I create the Data Source View, I only import the Foreign Keys that connect the Dimensions to Fact_Table. I have to drag the attributes of Dimension from Data Source View to the tab attributes?Â
Imagine this:
I have the following dimension:
Dim_Customer:
Customer_ID
Name_Customer
Job_Function
Date_of_Birth
Contact
Address
City
Country
When I create the cube only Customer_ID appears in attributes tab, it's normal?Â
One more question:
I don't want to create a hierarchy like:
Customer ID -> Name_Customer
Customer ID -> Date_of_Birth
Customer ID -> Address
Customer ID -> City
Customer ID -> Country
My idea is to create the following hierarchy:Â
Name_Customer ->Â Date_of_Birth ->Â Â Address ->Â Â City ->Â Country
But the first hierarchy that I show is always appears to me. Do you know what is happens?

General Network Error. Check your network documentation
I have also searched many articles and tried following solutions but nothing working
- connectiontimeout = 0, max pool size = 7500/100, pooling = false
- SSL disabling enforce security false as mentioned in microsoft kb article.
And there's nothing any issue with hardware/firewall as my application's login and other forms are working fine(which use same database with same connection string)
Can any one please help me to solve this error?

If I install SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2003 Standard, is SQL limited to 4 gigs of physical RAM?
I'm planning a new system that will run SQL 2005 Standard edition on a Windows 2003 Standard platform. The spec calls for 8 GB of RAM. My experience would lead me to suspect I need to install Windows 2003 Enterprise to take advantage of all the installed memory.

Hello all-
I have a specification table that has some attributes defined.
SpecId - Id of the specification
Attribute - Attribute of the spec. (Like Color, HP etc)
Value - Is the value of the attribute
Then I have a car table that actually has information about the cars. Intention is to take each specification and match the cars that match the specification. If the car has more attributes than the spec, we ignore the extra attributes for the match. But if the car has less attributes, we don't even consider the car as a match (even if the attributes present, match). To summarize, the car's attributes should be >= spec's attributes.
The code I have below is bad because I am joining the same tables twice. In addition, it fails in the condition "the car's attributes should be >= spec's attributes"
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just to be clear, I would like to know if a problem I face is due to an error on my part or a limitation on Microsoft's. In my experience (several hours-long installations, removals, reinstallations, using the skuupgrade=1 parameter from the command line, ad nauseum) I have concluded that the best one can do installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition from the Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition package is to get the Express Edition, (actually styled MSSMLBIZ). In particular, what I'm hoping to be able to do is program to a test database that I have from my client, which I was able to do on my XP Professional machine. But on my new Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine (which will only let me install the x64 version of SQL Server 2005), I get an instance that is characterized as SQL Server Express and generates the following error message when I try to attach to the same MDF file to which I was able to attach under my prior, XP-Pro based configuration:

The Developer Edition, of course, is supposed to enable us to program to all levels of the database, and I would hate to think it is really crippled in this way, but after uninstalling everything, reinstalling multiple times (devoting several days to the process), it sure beats me how I can overcome this problem short of going back to my old machine. Any definitive answers on this apparent limitation, or useful procedural advice on installation quirks, would be appreciated (and, yes, I've spent a lot of time going through the installation/setup forum -- if the answer is there I can't find it).

I have recently upgraded my databases from SQL 2000 to 2005. In 2000, I could set the network affinity so that sql server was only accessible from one of the two network cards. I cannot find how to do this in sql 2005. Is there a way?
In my installation, I have two network cards in each server. The "A" network adapter connects to the "A" hub, and the "B" adapter connected to the "B" hub. Traffic on trhe "B" hub is my private, non-routable network, This is where I want the SQL Server traffic to run. The A hub traffic is the public network. This gives me the ability to isolate SQL Server from the outside world.

Hi,
I need to find out whether SQL Server client components are installed on a machine through my application.
For that I was expecting "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90" registry key. BUT If I install just native client drivers, this key is not getting created.
What could be another approch to determine whether system has required client components.
Also I need to list all the SQL Server 2005 servers available in the network. (Similar to the Servers combo box being populated while DSN creation in ODBC Admin tool). There are several approches.
1) Use NetServerEnum API
2) Use SQLBrowseConnect ODBC API
3) Use SQLDMO Object
4) OSQL utility.
Which one I should use VC++ (2005)?
Thanks in advance,

Hi All, first post.
I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.
Thanks for any advise you can give.

Hello all,
I have 2 networked PC's both running vista ultimate
1st is Laptop and is running its own SQL Server at laptoplaptopSQL
2nd is Desktop and is running its own SQL Server at desktopdesktopSQL
Now both machines have seperate windows login accounts.
When I go SQL Server management studio I go to browse and each machine can see the other machines SQL Server, but when I go to login I get SQL Login falied for users" The user is not associaed with a trusted SQL server connection".
So I then go to logins new login and try to add my other pc's user account.
The problem I see is that when I go to search and then location it only shows its own PC's location and not the location of my other networked pc? So if I am on Desktop and in my theory want to add laptopuser to the desktop SQL Server logins I get:
"create failed for login laptopuser
An exception occurred while executing Transact SQL statement laptopuser is not a valid windows NT name. give the complete name
Not sure on where to go from here.
Any help would be great

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
We have (after several weeks of testing in all kind of environments) send out a new version of our application to several of our customers. Within days problems where drippin in; After looking for the problem on various customer situations we found a problem which I think is rather disturbing and very odd. I'll describe the situation, on which we finally managed to recreate the problem, here.
In my problem I use the following configuration:
Windows 2003 (standard edition) AD network with 2 domain controllers, multiple Windows XP workstations, some without SQL instances, some with SQL 2000 instances, some with SQL 2005 instances and even one with SQL 7 running.
All run a 32 bit OS.
Tools to reproduce:
ListSQLSvr application (found on SQLDev.net) to enumerate the instances.
Problem description:
--------------------------------------------------
I am running the machine called DEV001, which has SQL 2000 (instancename DRUMIS) and SQL 7.0 (has no instancename so this is the root instance) installed.
In any 'normal' situation all the runnings SQL instances are visible on the network like this:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002EXPRESS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
DEV002EXPRESS
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
When I turn the SQL 2005 Browser service off on the machine called DEV002 the list looks like:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV002
DEV002EXPRESS
DEV004DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
Notice that the browser service might be off on DEV002, you can still see the EXPRESS instance and a new root instance has appeared (though it doesn't exist!)??
After restarting the Browser service all is OK again.
When I turn on Hide Server in the SQL 2000 TCP/IP properties (or turn it on in the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerDRUMISMSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLibTcp] "TcpHideFlag"=dword:00000001) on the DEV002 computer something real scary is happening..
The list looks as follows:
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICE
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
When someone has entered a database (for example the backoffice database on INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT) the list looks as follows (for a short moment; 5 secs or so):
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICEDEVELOP;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
Notice now that ALL instances are gone and no extended information is available. In the Query Analyser and in the SQL Management Studio when browsing you'll see this as well!
When someone is accessing a database instance it appears for a few seconds again.
Since our installation and applications rely on selecting a existing instance it will fail in the above situations (or at least not showing all available instances).
In my opinion this is a bug somewhere!
Note that even when the SQL Services are stopped on DEV002 (leaving the Browser service running) it still seems to block out ALL instance on the ENTIRE network!
I don't mind that one INSTANCE or even the entire MACHINE is hidden from the network, but ALL instances on ALL machines??
And the SQL Browser issue also worries me a bit since it does not stop the possibily to browse the SQL instances; it removes the SQL2000 instances but adds a root instance which doesn't even exist! Also the extended info is stripped.
Can anyone help me solve this/advise?
Also mind that in any situation there might run a lot of computers with a lot of SQL instances and I cannot tell our customers to find which machine has the SQL TCP/IP properties set to Hide...
It even seems that in some situations SBS 2003 does the hiding automatically on Install? And if so, when and why?
