SQL Server 2005 SP1 Error--No Passive Nodes Were Successfully
Oct 16, 2007
Hello All,
I have a database cluster which I am trying to upgrade to SP1+hotfixes. I was able to successfully upgrade to SP1, however when I try to apply the hotfix "sql2005-kb918222-x86-enu.exe". The install fails and generates the following error log; Can anyone please help? Thanks a lot.

I'm in the process of installing Hotfix kb934458 (9.0.3054) on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Server. This is for SQL 2005 on a Active/Passive cluster with 2 instances. I'm only getting this error on the Database Engine and Analysis Services. It was successful for Integration Services, Reporting Services and Notification Services. I've tried taking the 2 instances offline as well as tried installing from the Active then again on the Passive nodes. No luck... Any suggestions? Does this work for R2 release of Windows 2003 SP2? This is the log:

I have upgraded our test server and on non cluster production machine. My next server is a cluster and I don't have a test cluster server. Do I upgrade the active node and that is all or am I going to need to fail it over and upgrade the other node.
Also the prerequesite for the upgrade advisor is .net 2.0 I am going to up that on each server one at a time but I am only going to add the upgrade advisor to one node is that ok.
I read the SP1 documentation and it clearly states only patch the active node and do not patch the inactive nodes.
I have successfully installed SQL Server 2005 SP1 but when I go to the "Microsoft Update" site it is still shown as required. I have tried going back to an old image of the PC and installing SQL Server 2005 and SP1 again but still the "Microsoft Update" page is not picking up the fact that SP1 has installed successfully. Anyone had the same problem or know of a fix?
Hi, I am having such a problem. I have SQL Express installed on the windows 2003 server and originally I installed instance1 of SQL Server 2005. When I installed Instance1, I remember having problems with remotely connecting to that instance1, but somehow I fixed it. Now I installed instance2 and I started having remote connection issues again with that instance2. I am able to connect to instance1 but not instance2. I checked settings for both instances and they look identical. I turned firewall off for now. I checked TCP settings using surface area configuration (allowing both local and remote connections). I turned off VIA protocol. I specified TCP properties to use dynamic port for that instance2. In the sql native client configuration I have the following order#: 1. Shared memory, 2. tcp, 3. np, 4. VIA(Disabled). TCP is configured to use 1433. I have no clue about what is going on. Sometimes I am able to connect remotely and sometimes I get the following error: "A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)." When I connect locally - everything connects fine. File sharing is also checked, it works etc... Thanks for help!!! GK I just noticed that I was able to connect from different computer on the different network.
I get the following error when trying to view my page.
Can someone please help me with this error. What does it mean and what is the solution to it? Here is the complete error message. - A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
I got this message from sql "Server was unable to process request. ---> A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) " Does anyone know what happen? Thanks
I have just installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express edition along with the SSMSE. I am using windows authentication. When I open SSMSE it connects me to a 'local instance' of the server. From there I right click on Database and select to add a new Database and I get the error above. I think I only need to allow local connections to the engine but I have tried allowing remote conections with all varations of named pipes and TCP/IP. I am running on Windows XP SP2 (home).
My question is, I'd like my actual cluster to have 4 servers. The virtual server that will be running SQL 2005 will only be installed on 2 of those nodes. Will this work or do I have to split my cluster in to 2 to meet the SQL Server 2005 2 node failover limitation? A basic config for the cluster would be like below....
ClusterSQLNode Active SQL 2005 Server ClusterExchNode Active Exchange Server ClusterAppNode Active Application Server ClusterFailoverNode Failover SQL 2005 Failover Exchange Failover Application
Will SQL 2005 install in a 4 server cluster if I only install it on to two of the nodes? Any potential gotchas?
i'm going nuts with SQL server notification thing. I have gone throigh this artical which tells how to set user http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/SqlDependencyPermissions.aspx. This article show how to create new user and setup for sql server notification. But In my case user was alredy existing in database. which is very common senario in most cases. So i did following( check the SQL script below) but then i get this error "A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)" this my sql script use [master]Go -- Ensuring that Service Broker is enabled ALTER DATABASE [DatabaseName] SET ENABLE_BROKERGO -- Switching to our databaseuse [DatabaseName]GO CREATE SCHEMA schemaname AUTHORIZATION usernameGO ALTER USER username WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = schemaname GO /* * Creating two new roles. hi, i have a message queue system using sql 2005 service broker. the code and setup is the same on both dev and live database. but soon after i restored a live backup to dev. the queue stopped working on dev, live is ok thou. after some trouble shooting, i found that the server is not sending the message at all, but it says "Command(s) completed successfully" without any error messages.
setup:
-----------------------
create message type TestQueryMessage validation = none
create contract TestQueryContract (TestQueryMessage sent by initiator)
create queue TestSenderQueue
create service TestSenderService on queue TestSenderQueue
create queue TestQueueReceiver
create service TestServiceReceiver on queue TestQueueReceiver (TestQueryContract)
send message:
-------------------------
declare @conversationhandle uniqueidentifier;
begin dialog @conversationhandle
from service [TestSenderService]
to service 'TestServiceReceiver'
on contract [TestQueryContract]
with encryption = off;
send on conversation @conversationhandle
message type [TestQueryMessage] ('blah blah blah');
result:
----------------------------------
Command(s) completed successfully.
but when i do "select * from TestQueueReceiver", there's nothing. and i sure nothing else had picked up the messages.
Could someone give me an ideal of what it takes to upgrade the memory in my cluster. Is it as easy has upgrading the passive node, switching the nodes, then upgrading the other server. And do I need to re-configure the windows cluster. And will both server need to be down at the same time at any point.
Or is their more to the process? Thanks for any assistance.
I need to install the SSIS components on the referenced database server. I believe the SSIS components are cluster aware, so I was planning on just doing add/remove and selecting the components. Rather than breaking the cluster apart to patch the components back to SP1, I was thinking of just running the SP2 install right over the top of the running cluster to bring everything up to SP2.
I'm looking for any suggestions/comments on whether this is the proper way to proceed or if I'm going to have a problem.
Error 0x80070005 while loading package file "E:SSISPackagesPackage1.dtsx". Access is denied. .
The package is executed from the main package via an 'Execute Package Task' that is within a 'For Each Loop' container. The 'For each loop' goes through a single iteration as expected. The strange thing is that the error comes after 'Package1' has run successfully. I am logging the PackageStart/PackageEnd and error events and I see that Package1 ends successfully and then the "Access is denied" error occurs. The main package is launched by executing dtsexec via Process.Start() from a web page. The packages have 'SaveCheckpoints' set to True. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.
We have a SQL cluster server running with SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. Currently the cluster has 2 nodes with Active/Active. Now I need to add a new node as a Passive node. So after I have done it, the cluster will be a Active/Active/Passive cluster.
Because the cluster is a production server, I need to know exactly how I add a new node onto the current cluster without breaking anything. Also this is my first time to install a passive node, so it is difficult for me to understand how to install and configure it.
I have already added the physical node onto the cluster group so I can see the new node paused from the Cluster Administrator. Now I need to install the SQL but I am too nervous to run the installation program.
My questions are:
1. Do I need to run the SQL install program from one of other active nodes in order to install the SQL on to the new node? Or is it ok to run the SQL install program from CD? 2. Do I need to create a new virtual name, a new SQL named instance and a virtual IP address for the new passive node?
Physical node name Virtual name SQL Server Instance Name IP address Node1 (active) SQL1 SQL1 xxx.xxx.xxx.100 Node2 (active) SQL2 SQL2SQL2 xxx.xxx.xxx.110 Node3 (passive) SQL3??? SQL3SQL3????????? xxx.xxx.xxx.120????
3. Is there a risk to delete or change the current active nodes? If so, will you let me know as I will be super-careful not to do it.
SELECT res.res_id, sub.value('(./@id)[1]', 'char(2)') id FROM vwResult res CROSS APPLY report.nodes('/clue_personal_auto/report/search_dataset/subjects/*') report(sub)
It works just fine in SQL Query. After placing this into a view in SSDT November 2012 update, I get a compilation error.
I am having some teething problems while installing SQL on a 3 node cluster. Within the Cluster configuration I have 3 Cluster Groups with each of them having their associated disk resources. All these disk resources physically exist on a SAN.
The actual cluster is running absolutely fine and I can access all the disks from their respective owner node. The problem only starts when I start installing SQL Server 2005 on this cluster. I specify the Cluster group from the Cluster Group Selection and choose the desired partition and then the error message pops up
"There is not enough diskspace on the destination disk for the current SQL Server data files. To proceed, free up disk space to make room for data files, or install the data files to a different drive"
But the disk I am trying to install it on is 264Gb and none of it is used. I have also tried to change it to a different disk within the same Cluster group but to no avail. I have even tried to install it in a different cluster group all together but I get the same error message.
I have googled around havent found anything so far. The disks have got full permissions for the account I am installing SQL with.
We have a SQL 2014 active passive cluster with 5 instances. When the cluster was installed one of the nodes was a virtual machine. As we started to have problems and this is not a Microsoft supported configuration we decided to replace the virtual node with a phyiscal one. On 3 of these 5 instances we configured static ports (1433 TCP) this was required for applications and firewall implementation.
Now with the physical node joined to the cluster we have issues with these three instances. Whenever one of these instances is moved to the passive node the server authentication is changed from mixed to windows only. I'm no SQL expert at all but to me it looks like the configuration of the instances are not replicated to the passive node? I found some similar problems on the net but these are mostly under sql 2008.
I have a custom essbase application/db source that I wish to connect to from SSRS 2005. I have all the required software installed (APS / SP2 .3050) etc.
I can connect to the datasource in SSRS 2005, but when I'm trying to build the query on the cube, I see under the member properties of all dimensions, the following piece of line "error occurred retrieving child nodes: null"
Also, when I try to drag my Measures into the query section (or any other dimension for that matter of fact, though that defies logic) I get the following error
Cannot perform cube view operation. OLAP error (1260046): Unknown Member PARENT_UNIQUE_NAME used in query
I am new to using ESSBASE with SSRS 2005, and hence cannot make much sense of the above two errors. Any insight or a re-direction to similar posts with solutions will be greatly appreciated.
I have a script contains multiple statements to update multiple tables. How can I make sure that either all statements get executed successfully or no changes apply to the tables (in case one or more errors occur)? I've been searching on Internet and it seems like I need to use Rollback and begin transaction.
I have a job scheduled that imports a table from a Oracle database. The job runs at 3am and reports success. But for some reason when i query the table to see how many records there are, I see the same row count as the day before (it should increase everyday- student enrollment). When i execute the package manually, the table updates fine.
How do I SELECT multiple nodes with same name but different attributes. For example, I would need to SELECT NM1.03.1 from <NM1> node. How do I specify which one I want to SELECT? What if I want to SELECT them all? What if I only want two of them?

I'm looking at installing 2008R2 and 2014 side by side, then using Mirroring to provide HA for the 2008R2 instance and AoHA for the 2014 instance. I'd be using the same two physical servers for both the Mirroring pair and the AoHA pair.
-MS Server 2012 R2. -SQL 2014 EE. -All windows updates. -Clean install of both OS and SQL, all 3 nodes are identical. -SQL Server is running on an alternate port, which I've opened in the firewall. Connections from all network locations are working swimmingly; including connections between all 3 nodes. -I've got the groups up and running; Listener is set up correctly. Connections work great. -One node is synchronous, one is asynchronous. Both show synchronized, and synchronizing respectively. -Data added at the primary node is moved across to all 3 with lightning speed.
When I attempt a manual failover it hangs..and hangs...then pops up an error 41131 and rolls back the failover. Leaving the cluster perfectly intact and working just as it did prior to the failover attempt. What I've checked so far:
-There is absolutely NOTHING in the cluster events log. -Windows event log shows no errors, just the standard stuff of the primary nodes state changing from primary to resolving and then back again. -SQL Event log has a few things in there, but nothing that's leading me to a solution, I've attached the log from start to finish on an attempted manual failover:
I am setting up a 3 node cluster as part of an availability group.Initially I tested failover between nodes using SQL Management Studio and everything failed over successfully when I stopped a node, and I was still able to write queries. I started to test with an application which connects using an SQL user and whenever I would switch nodes, I would get login failed. I believe the cause of this issue is because the server logins SID's which are tied to the database are different than the server logins on the other nodes which resulted in login failed.how can I ensure that the server logins SID's are the same between nodes? Is there a way of copying this over or how is this supposed to be done? I read a little about contained databases where I could just set the login on the database itself vs. creating a server login but I would rather not go down that route.
I'm currently receiving the following error message whilst attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit): Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Installing performance counters. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified.
This server already has an install of SQL Server 2000 as the default instance. I'm attempting to install a new named instance of SQL Server 2005.

You can ignore this and it will complete the installation, but subsequently trying to patch with SP2 will fail on the same sections - Hotfix.exe crashes whilst attempting to patch Database Services, Integration Services and Client Components (3 separate crashes).
I've removed SQL Server 2005 elements and tried to re-install, but it's not improved the situation.
One of my actual production environments is a Failover two-node cluster, SQL Server 2005 SP3 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Recently, the node 2 was failed, so I formatted a new machine to add the new node, but it failed with the following error: “Adding nodes to the Virtual Server definition using a newer version of Setup is not allowed.”I have searching across the web for a solution but I can’t find it.
The Summary file “Summary.txt” are: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06 OS Version : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family, Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 3790) Time : Thu Jun 04 13:04:38 2015
[code]....
One point of my attention, it’s that the Product Version that appears on this summary file corresponding a 9.00.1399.06 that is to say, a RTM version, not SP3 (9.00.4035).Based on this, I went to the path where the files of installation are (ARPWrapper.exe), "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Bootstrap"and I 've found that these files contain a different version of what I have currently installed. For example, in properties of ARPWrapper.exe the version of this is 2005.90.1399.0 The same goes for the rest of the files in that folder:
Is it possible that the solution is to replace these files with the corresponding version, in this case the version 2005.90.4035.0(SP3) and continue with the installation?
