SQL Server 2005 SP2 Cannot Be Installed Because The Database Engine Setup Remains In Suspended Installation Mode
Feb 23, 2007
SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.
When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.
I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.
I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606
Any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

Our last CheckDB failed on the 02/09. We were having problems with our SAN then and that got sorted out. The databases that it failed still has the snapshot showing in SQL Management Studio, screenshot exemple below (server name blanked out)
I reran CheckDB on the 04/09 on all the databases and the same databases that failed on the 02/09 failed again. I noticed in the log file, it tried to use the same snapshot file created on  02/09 to run CheckBD
I ran CheckDB manually on the databases that failed "DBCC CheckDB (WSS_Content_ce) with all_errormsgs"Â and did not get any errors back.Â
How do I remove the snapshot databases? We had a problem on 02/09 so the snapshot copy obvisouly has problems. I'd like to remove these snapshots and rerun a CheckDB on all the databases to ensure all is ok.

As I know the database should be restored from backup and logs reapplied. That’s the first and generally recommended approach any time a DB is suspect, whether it’s from log or data file corruption. But if I have no backups then we follow below steps ( after Googling I found these steps on most of the websites ):
1.EXEC sp_resetstatus ‘yourDBname’;
2.ALTER DATABASE yourDBname SET EMERGENCY
3.DBCC checkdb(’yourDBname’)
4.ALTER DATABASE yourDBname SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE
5.DBCC CheckDB (’yourDBname’, REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS)
6.ALTER DATABASE yourDBname SET MULTI_USER
Now my question is,Â
1. If after executing DBCC CHECKDB at 3rd step, it shows inconsistency. Then I will execute SET SINGLE USER WITH ROLLBACK & if after executing DBCC CHECKDB at 3rd step, no errors found. Then what will be the steps?
2. When we execute DBCC CHECKDB (' DBNAME ', REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) how can we recover lost data during process. As far as I know some data will loss and if it will happen then business will get suffered.
3. Why run DBCC CHECKDB() WITH REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS if there are no consistency errors in the database?

Hi,
I have a database shown a SUSPENDED mode on both side of Principal and Mirror server. What should I do now?
1). Is the breaking the Mirror sesssion my only choice?
2). If I break it, how do I reestablish the Mirror again quickly. What is my potential data loss?
Thanks,

Hi there, can anyone tell me how to setup or enable mixed mode authentication in SQL 2005? also is it possible to transfer views or stored procedures from 1 database to another? If so where do I go to do this. I thought a DTS may do it but cant find the correct option in the Management Studio to do this.
Thanks in anticipation,

I used the SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor to upgrade from SQL Server 2000 Enterprise to 2005 Standard. The only complaint I got concerned DTS packages, but I had none anyway. When I open SQL Server Management Studio, I can run queries, but they're against tables in the old 2000 databases. The SQL engine and Server agent are version version 8.0. Not surprising that new TSQL statements like 'BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY TO FILE' won't work.
Do I have to uninstall my previous version before upgrading?
Thanks.

I downloaded the AdventureWorks2012 OLTP script. When I ran it it gave me some errors. I also noticed that it tried to install into the bult-in master database, it created a lot of tables and objects. Some questions :
1) How can I remove everything that the script installed into master database?
2) Do I need to create 1st an empty database and then run the script there?
3) I am running the script from a custom path (C:DownloadsMicrosoft SQL Server 2012AdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script.zipAdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script) not sure if this is causing some of the errors as the script, in the beggining has a path to other folders :
:setvar SqlSamplesDatabasePath  "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATA"
-- NOTE: Change this path if you copied the script source to another path
:setvar SqlSamplesSourceDataPath "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERToolsSamplesAdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script"
4) Final question, I also downloaded the AdventureWorks 2012 simple database (AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf). Is this file the same database as the one created by the OLTP script?

We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

So trying to analyse what technologies. We can use for setting up the DR for that database. Can we use mirroring / replication or what's the best way of setting up DR on that database.

Hi,
I have a question about using MSSQL server 2005 standard edition in Clustering mode.
I would like to build a msql cluster with only 2 servers (2 nodes).
I read here -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=818234dc-a17b-4f09-b282-c6830fead499&DisplayLang=en
page 5 that you can use MSSQL server 2005 standard edition in Clustering mode with 2 nodes.
But my question is :
Can I use windows 2003 standard edition (Clustering mode managed ????) or I only can use windows 2003 enterprise edition ?

I can't install the SQL Server 2012 Express version with tools downloaded from [URL]
I'm getting the following error:Â
Error installing SQL Server Database Engine Services Instance Features
Could not find the Database Engine startup handle.
Error code: 0x851A0019
I'm trying to install a new stand-alone version with a default instance but always getting this error. From the features I'm installing the database engine services (not the replication), all the tools, only the basic management toolds and the SQL Client connectivity SDK.
Further in the installation I'm choosing the Windows authentication and in the list of SQL administrators I've already tried to install as current user but also as System. Both with the same error result.

Note: Visual studio is not installed.

Have a production server, 12 Enterprise, and we are adding a new app to an existing instance. Â Next app needs SSRS and that was not put in the install request a year ago for the instance. Â
I do not think a reboot is required but have been wrong before. There are no SPs applied to this server and only last week we were given go ahead from one app vendor to apply SPs. Â That would have been done in monthly maintenance cycle next weekend. Â Our test server is doing just fine with all apps on SP1.

Hello,
I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I
have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication).
I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the
password of my PC login profile.
Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button,
the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version)
Unable to connect to "CARLO"
Further information:
An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to
the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated
because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined
settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a
connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2)
I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access
password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to
Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so
I can't insert the new password...
Can you suggest what have I to do?
Thank you very much

Just like with Access DB, can we set password for database in SQL Server 2005 Express ?
Reason to do so is, user with Login having sysadmin previliage can acess all databases in SQL server.
so just want to restrict database access to only those users who knows the password.
Is there any possible solution ? Pls comment.

OK.
I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more.
I'm getting this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com).
I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser.
I'm really at a loss on what to do.

I want to create a database on my local machine and work with it. But I am not able to see the name of my local server under "Database Engine" in the list of "Registered Servers".
Options I tried:
(1) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "Update Local Server Registration"
(2) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "New" -> Server Registration.
In "New Server Registration" Window, in "Server Name" drop down I clicked "Browse for more" but still in "Browse for Servers" window, I am not able to see the name of my local server in "Local Servers" tag under Database Engine.
(3) If I do File -> Connect Object Explorer -> Connect to Server window in "Server name" drop down box, if I click "Browse for more", I am able to see local server name eg. "XYZ" under Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services but not under "Database Engine"
Please help me create a new database engine in SQL Server 2005 or list my local server under "Database engine" ?

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.
Thanks.
