SQL Server 2005 SP2 X64 Crashes...LazyWriter: Warning, No Free Buffers Found.
Jun 15, 2007
While waiting for the fax of instructions to contact MS Support, I thought I would post here (tried several times and no fax...)
We get this message in the log file and then all hell breaks loose until it resets memory. The SQL Service continues working but nobody can connect for about 5 minutes and then is seems to reset itself. This has happened three times over the past two weeks. Only one time it did create the SQLDUMP files but all three occurences have practically the same entries.
We are running SQL Server 2005 x64 SP2 under Windows 2003 x64 SP1. We have 4GB RAM and SQL is configured to use 2GB of it. We have a large number of databases (about 400) on this one instance that experiences this problem. The server itself is not under a tremendous load. All of the databases were recently upgraded from SQL 2000 SP4 32 bit instance. The first occurence happened just days after the migration.

I don€™t know if this is the case but I need some help. We have itanium server with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (Intel IA-64) Mar 23 2007 18:42:19 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2).
We has had lot of problem with that the sqlserver.exe process hangs 100% cpu. It€™s totally non responsive I€™m not even able to contact the server with DAC. The general solution has been just kill the process. Not nice.

LazyWriter: warning, no free buffers found.
We used to solution to set a fixed as told in the post above and after that the problem went away. At least for the last 4 days.
Is this LazyWriter not fixed in SP2 for itanium or what?

We see the following message in our error log.
WARNING: Clearing procedure cache to free contiguous memory.
It is accomonpanied by fairly intensive CPU activity.
We get this roughly once per working day.
Anyone have any idea why, and what we can do to stop this?
Regads,
Jim Plant

Hi,
A long time ago I posted this: http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/06/09/1583.aspx explaining all the different buffer types in the pipeline.
I have to admit I'm still not clear on the difference between a private buffer and a flat buffer though.
Are flat buffers a subset of private buffers.
If so, if a private buffer is not a flat buffer - what is it?
If not, can a buffer be a private buffer AND a flat buffer?
Some descriptions from BOL are:
Private buffers: A private buffer is a buffer that a transformation uses for temporary work only
Flat buffers: Flat buffers are blocks of memory that a component uses to store data
That sounds like two ways of saying the same thing to me! It certainly doesn't distinguish them anyway!
Just seeking some clarification here. If you could whip of a demo package that explains the difference between the two (with reference to the Performance Counters) then that would be great.
Thanks
Jamie

I am having problems with the "Duplicate key was ignored" warning message. The problem is that the message seems to happen randomly and cannot be reproduced. If i take the same set of data and run the stored procedure that causes the problem i don't get the warning message a second or subsequent time. Also all the SELECT statements have criteria set to remove duplicates before they are inserted into the tables.
I have a data feed that pulls data from a DB2 database to a SQL Server 2008 staging table as a flattened set of records. A stored procedure in SQL Server is run to load the data into the destination tables. The data feed is run hourly for new and updated records in DB2 Monday-Friday 09:00-17:00 and then there is a midnight run of all the records going back for the last 12 months.
The data feed was originally sent from DB2 as a CSV file and pulled into SQL Server using SSIS but is now an Informatica workflow that pulls the data directly from DB2.
It is the Informatica workflow that is returning the "duplicate key was ignored" warning message and this stops the workflow. The workflow is restarted and the data is always loaded the second time without the warning message. The warning does not happen every time the workflow is run - it can run for a number of days with no warnings and then one will come through I can see in Profiler that it is SQL Server that returns the Duplicate key was ignored warning message so it is not an issue with Informatica.
I cannot reproduce the problem to get to the root cause of the issue. I would expect that if i run the same set of data through the stored procedure i would get the warning message every time, but this is not the case. Even when i step through the stored procedure i do not get the message. As the midnight data feed returns the records from the last 12 months, so by definition would include duplicates, the warning message only appears randomly and is not consistent.

Hi,
I just developed a ASP.NET website with SQL Server 2005 as database. I am having connection crash problem when multiple user click on same link to fetch data from the database. If users click on different links or there is few seconds of time gap between the data access, then it works fine. But the connections crash problem only occurs when 2 or more users click same link at same time.
I am using the following kind of Datalayers to access the data from database:
public static ContentInformation GetContentForUpdate(int ContentId)
{
ContentInformation result = new ContentInformation(); ;
SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand();
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
command.Connection = Connection;
command.CommandText = "Content_GetContentForUpdate1";
SqlParameter parameter = new SqlParameter("@ContentId", SqlDbType.Int);
parameter.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
parameter.Value = ContentId;
command.Parameters.Add(parameter);
try
{
command.Connection.Open();
SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.SingleRow);
if (reader.Read())
{
// read the data
}
reader.Close();
}
catch (SqlException ex)
{
Trace.TraceError(ex.Message);
throw ex;
}
finally
{
command.Connection.Close();
}
return result;
}
I would be really grateful if someone can help me out with this problem. Waiting for the soonest reply. Thanks.

If SQL Server Setup fails, Setup will roll back the installation but may not remove all .manifest files. The workaround is to rename the files and then rerun Setup. For more information, see How to: Work Around COM+ Check Failure in SQL Server Setup.

I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource.
Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.

I've tried to installed sql server 2005 developer edition on windows vista home premium but failed many times, almost giving up.
I've installed and turned on all the features of IIS 7.0 but it still failed and I tried to test IIS 7 by running the local host and received this error " HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error."
I even ran the windows update SP1 for Vista and MDAC 2.8 SP1
I really appreciate any comments and help.

Hello,
I have been trying to drill down to the cause for this event log message:
"The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance
SQLEXPRESS is not valid."
It is reported from the SQLBrowser service as a warning when the service
starts. I have tried starting SQLBrowser.exe with -c flag, but the output reveals no
errors. I have seen this error on three computers. Two are running SQL 2000, 2005
and Express. One was only running Express, but still this message.
I then looked into the log for the SQL Express server itself. It shows this
message on startup:
"Dedicated administrator connection support was not started because it is
not available on this edition of SQL Server. This is an informational message
only. No user action is required."
Now, it appears to me that these two messages may relate to the same
"error" (or rather behaviour by design). So, can anyone confirm that the
warning in the event log from the SQL Browser service occurs becuase of that
the SQL Express edition doesn't allow any "AdminConnection", but the SQL
Browser service isn't aware of that SQL Express edition shouldn't support that, and
reports it as a warning (implying that we can't do much about this warning)?
Thanks for any input on this issue!

Hi folks
I attended one of the SQL Server 2005 "Ready to Launch" parties a couple of years ago and was given a complimentary SQL Server Standard Edition CAL along with a copy of the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup DVD.
As there's no mention in the "Ready to Launch" pack of an included Server license I was wondering whether it is possible to install a copy of SQL Server 2005 on a standalone server and use the single CAL in a Production environment without having to purchase a Server license? The pack does include a Product Key - is this the Server license?
Thanks
Chris

Sorry if someone already covered this, but I can't find anything about it.
I just installed (3 hours ago actually) SQL2005 Standard Edition (from the Launch event) on my machine, and i don't seem to have a shortcut to the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio anywhere.
I looked for a likely executable, but couldn't find it anywhere. This wouldn't bother me as much if I could use Enterprise Manager from 2K, but SQL2005 will not allow it to register.
How do I get this going? There are people here that want to inspect it's features, etc. I haven't got anything to show them.

I just installed Sql Server Reporting Services 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 server. I configured Reporting Services through the Reporting Services Configuration tool and everything has a green checkmark.
I'm trying to connect to the webservice, but keep getting 404 not found errors. I've tried putting the following into a web browser and all return a 404 error:
http://msql01/reports/
http://msql01/reportserver/
http://msql01/reportserver/reportservice.asmx?wsdl
http://msql01/reportserver/reportservice2005.asmx?wsdl
I've tried edting the RSWebApplication.config file using the following configurations (restarting IIS afterwards) without any luck:
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>
and
<UI>
<ReportServerUrl>http://msql01/ReportServer/</ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory></ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
<ReportBuilderTrustLevel>FullTrust</ReportBuilderTrustLevel>
</UI>
Any help is appreciated!

Has anybody ever had VS2005 sometimes crash when deploying reports? It only happens once and awhile, but it is annoying. I was hoping this would go away with service pack 1, but it didn't.
Another problem that I thought would be fixed is when you try to close VS2005 after working on reports and it states "Cannot close because an active modal is active" occasionally.

I'm a developer at a medium-sized installation using ReportServer 2005. There's a problem that occurs for some users and not others. After the ReportServer 2005 report has been generated, the user clicks the Print icon. The print dialog comes up; when they click the OK button on the Print dialog, the screen goes black and their machine reboots.
We've then gone to install the latest Microsoft updates on their machine, to no avail.
After the reboot, they can print from, e.g., Microsoft Word or other applications, but they crash the OS when they print from the ReportServer 2005 report.
I know the first time you print from ReportServer, it installs some software on your machine. I don't know if the problem is related to this.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :
SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)
Messages
* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility
* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.
Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?
Thanks.

When installing the SQL engine I see the status changing as the instance is started and then stopped again etc, finally the status changes to "removing backup files" when it get an error that reports:
"The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Completing Commit. The error is: The specified module could not be found."
Unfortunately there isnt any more information to go on. Any help would be appreciated.

One of my clients has received the following message:
"99/08/10 10:40:15.38 spid2 Lazywriter: WARNING, LRU list is empty (408 free bufs, 3025 total bufs)"
I understand that it has something to do with the caching of data, but how can I fix this error message? Do I need to change the allocation of cache or just add more memory?

We have an application server running Windows Server 2000 with Sp4. When we use the ODBC data sources connection software, it shows the SQL Server 2000 servers in the drop down box, but none of the new 2005 servers. If we enter the 2005 server name and try to connect, we get the 'Specified SQL Server not found' error message. The connection works fine from a newer Windows XP box and remote connections is enabled. My guess is that we need a new ODBC to connect to SQL Server 2005, but I can't find anything that says this.

Hi,
*every processing* of a cube with 7 dimensions 5 measure groups (no table has more than 100.000 rows) hangs while trying to process the measure groups. I have to restart the Analysis Service all the time. But even worse every 2nd processing crashes the whole Analysis Services Process.
The only time I could sucessfully deploy a cube was with 1 measure group only.
How can anyone do any serious work with Analysis Services?
The error messages from evenlog are not helpful either.
Thanks,
Tobias
