SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Failure - Password Requirements

Oct 20, 2006

I am trying to do an upgrade in place from SQL Server 2000 SP3a to SQL Server 2005. I am encountering the following error. SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server] Password validation failed. The password does not meet Windows policy requirements because it is too short...To continue, correct the problem and then SQL Server setup again. I read the other posting and it mentioned that the sa account needs to be changed. I have changed the sa account to meet the passowrd requirements for our system and have changed the following services I could find over to my domain account which I know meets the password restrictions. If I do a new install, everything seems to load correctly. What options do I have to do this upgrade in place?

Thanks for your help,

Bill

Sql Server Password Policy Requirements

May 30, 2007

Hi!

I am installing SQL Server 2005 Express as part of my setup. On Windows 2003 Servers with password policy enabled, the SQL Server 2005 Express installation fails. Here is the error I am getting - "the sa password must meet SQL Server password policy requirements. For strong password guidelines, see Authentication Mode, in SQL Server Books Online.". If I disable the password policy, the SQL Server 2005 Express installation is OK.

Is there a parameter that I can pass to the command line to get around this?

Thanks!

Username Password Conversions On Upgrade To 2005

May 23, 2008

Am getting ready to perform upgrade/migrate from 2000 to 2005 and have concerns about all the usernames/passwords converting accurately, as the existing 2000 instance has hundreds of them (am used to conversions with few usernames/passwords). Any suggestions as to the best way to proceed. The upgrade/migration is being done on the same box. Will a straight upgrade convert the master db cleanly with u/p, what issues does a migration on the same box present? Thanks.

SQL Server 2005 Incorrectly Claims I Don't Meet Minimum Service Pack Level Requirements?

Feb 10, 2006

This doesn't make any sense. I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 on SBS 2003 with Service Pack 1. According to Windows Update, there is nothing left for me to install. However, I am getting this error (while installing SQL Server Express and the Developer Edition):

"Your operating system does not meet Service Pack level requirements for this SQL Server release. Install the Service Pack from the Microsoft Download Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50380, and then run SQL Server setup again."

When I go to the link, there is nothing there to download (it takes me to the main Microsoft download page). I meet all the requirements that I have found. What gives?

Thanks,

Analysis :: Logon Failure - Unknown User Name Or Bad Password

Jan 26, 2015

I am trying to connect Sharepoint 2013 services (performancepoint , excel services) to SSAS 2012 using the EffectiveUserName.

I was getting a error message regarding conencting the datasource and when checking profiler it was saying Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

On the SSAS server i tried using EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters and it failed for the above reason. I also tried my username as well as the sharepoint service accountthe sharepoint service account and my username are both server admins.

When I try using the EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters on another server I can connect with no problems.

What seems to be the different with server where I am getting the error message?

SQLX05 SP1 Upgrade To SP2 Acted Like A Failure, But Seems To Work?

Dec 20, 2007

Hi guys, got an interesting scenario: I have a new Dell server with an "empty" Windows Server 2003 SE SP2 installation (all latest updates), joined to a 2003-native domain, ~60 GB/free space, 2 GB ram, P4, etc etc. I loaded up BackupExec 11d 7170, which installs SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1.

Before I even used Backup Exec, I knew I wanted to get SQLX05 SP2 installed. First, I followed the preliminary steps listed in the SQL Server 2005 Express Edtion SP2 readme file (backup master/model/msde and bedb/be_dlo databases, verify DB space, verify enabled services/accounts, stop dependant services).

By now it was after-hours and I was away from the office, so I logged into the server with my 2k3 Enterprise Admin account via Remote Desktop. I changed the server from Windows Update to Microsoft Update, and it found/downloaded/installed SQLX05 SP2 for me.

But about 7 minutes later, Microsoft Update told me it failed with code 0x3B30- and the Help & Support had no help for that code.

I started to look around the 'net for the error- I found that some people went into Add/Remove programs, clicked Change on SQLX05, selected the instance, and wound up clicking on "complete the suspended install"- unfortunately, it wanted the source for sqlrun_sql.msi, which I didn't have anywhere, so I clicked Cancel.

I looked at the server, and finally found the summary.txt file buried in C:program filesmicrosoft sql server90setup bootstraploghotfix. It showed passing the prereq check, product detection (2047/express), no disqual'd prods, no locked files, and then had this section:

Product Installation Status

SQL Express Features : SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Engine,SQL_Replication,SQL_SharedTools
Error Number : 15152
Error Description : Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file

Then I saw the hotfix.txt file in the same directory, which had at the end:

More digging found the C:program...loghotfixSQL9Express_Hotfix_KB921896_SQLEXPR.EXEFilesSQLSetup0002_BKUP1_SQL.log file- which was 6822 kb large! But there are repeated errors in it that go something like this:

Now here's the strange part- I saw something on the 'net that suggested rebooting and applying it again. So I rebooted the server, went to Microsoft Update- and it didn't show that I needed the SQLX05 SP2 update. I checked the Application event log, and it showed that during the SQLX05 startup SQLX05 reported version number 9.00.3042.00! I ran a TSQL command (with sqlcmd) and systemproperty('productlevel') came back as SP2.

I finished my TSQL command, and got a popup from Microsoft Error reporting saying some errors happened recently for hotfix.exe. I clicked showdetails, and the p-vals with information were P2=0x3b30, P4=0x3b30, P5=copyengine.cpp@1653 , P7=sql9express. So I sent the report up.

Out of curiousity, I went back to Add/Remove programs, clicked on SQLX05 and "change", selected the instance, next, next, and wound up at the SQL Server Install Wizard. It STILL had a box for me to click on saying "Complete the Suspended Installation"- so I cancelled it.

But everything "looks" fine! Is it? Can I trust it?? Could Sql Server Express have automatically ran the failed sql files after the reboot?

Thanks!

SQL 2005 SP2 - Windows 2003 Ent SP1 - Password Does Not Meet The Password Policy DLL

Jun 18, 2007

I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.

Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)

I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.

CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON

All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.

Any ideas as to a root cause?

Upgrade From SQL Server 2005 Eval Copy To SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition

Jul 23, 2007

I have a SQL Server 2005 evaluation that has already been installed and setup on a server. I believe it originally had a 180 day eval. There have been numerous databases and users added as well as maintenance plan created...

The eval was put on the machine as an interim solution while waiting for paper work and order processiing things to happen. All the paperwork and ordering... have been completed and I now have the real SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition license key ....

I am very new to SQL Server and need to determine ...

1. Can I update the eval copy to become permanently licensed?

2. Would I want to upgrade the eval to permanent? Will I lose any capabilities by keeping the current eval setup?

If it is reasonable to keep the eval setup

3. How do I go about entering the license key to make it permanent?

If it is necessary to install the new Standard Edition...

4. How do I install it while maintaining the already defined databases, data, users, maintenance plan...

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

SQL 2005 Cluster And Mirroring Hardware Requirements

Dec 4, 2007

Hi,

I was hoping to learn from real world experience regarding the hardware requirements for SQL 2005. For both the 32 and 64 bit OS the minimumn recommendaiton is single processor, 1GB or more, 512 MB RAM.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/enterprise/sysreqs.mspx

This seems very thin and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for hardware configs for a mirrored db cluster? I'm filling in as a DBA and apologize for the ignorance.

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

Cannot Upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express To SP2 After Upgrading SQL Server 2005 Enterprise To SP2

Feb 18, 2008

How do I upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 if I also have SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP2 already on the same box? I installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise first, then applied SP2, then installed Visual Studio 2008 (which installed SQL Server 2005 Express).

When I try to upgrade Sql Server 2005 Express to SP2 using the special Express edition of SP2, I get an error message that says "None of the selected features can be installed". I end up having to cancel the install of SP2.

I'm left with SQL Server 2005 at level 9.0.3054 and SQL Server 2005 Express at 9.0.3042. How can I bring SQL Server Express 2005 to the same level as SQL Server 2005 Entperprise?

Upgrade From SQL Server 2005 Express To 2005 Enterprise Fails

Dec 29, 2006

Hi

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
(As a Preparation to install SQLServer2005 Service Pack 2 (CTP))

I tried to upgrade a particular Instance (OFFICESERVERS, which was based on SQL Server 2005 Express ).

During the upgrade I get a message saying that ...

.....Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules.....

The setup log contains the following detail information:

Setup And Upgrade :: Windows Authentication Not Working After Password Change?

Apr 29, 2015

This morning I attempted to connect to my local copy of SQL Server (2012) (Win 7) using Windows Authentication. I was unable to do so and per the error log it was due to error 18456 (invalid credentials).

Yesterday I changed my windows password. Is it possible for this to be the cause?

FYI, following is from the error logs:

2015-04-27 10:10:32.98 Backup BACKUP DATABASE successfully processed 0 pages in 0.451 seconds (0.000 MB/sec).2015-04-28 00:00:41.90 spid18s This instance of SQL Server has been using a process ID of 2096 since 4/21/2015 9:08:05 AM (local) 4/21/2015 1:08:05 PM (UTC). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.2015-04-28 09:58:51.16 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 38.2015-04-28 09:58:51.16 Logon Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM'. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

The logs showed the error occurred yesterday (4/28) which is about when I changed my password. The 17:09 log (last one) is when I shut down my computer.  Note that I was logged into SQL Server when I changed my Windows password and worked with it several times through out the day.

Also, per the configuration manager SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) (and all other services) is stopped and I was unable to start it ("The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion).

SQL Server 2005 SP1 Failure

Nov 30, 2006

My upgrade to SP1 for SQL Server 2005 failed and I have yet to find a reason or a solution. I have read many articles describing file security problems, registry problems etc. I have been through these and looked at all of the different aspects and still cannot find a fix other than to unistall SQL and reinstall SQL. Since this is a production server and is used 24/7 I would rather avoid this. The installation is on a windows 2003 server with SP1 that was upgraded from Windows 2000. SQL was originally installed fresh on 2000. There is 21GB of HD space left. Below is the last few lines from the SQL Log

Failure Installing SQL Server 2005 SP 1

Apr 22, 2006

Windows XP Pro
SQL Server 2005 Express
SQL Server 2005 Standard

I installed the service pack for SQL Server Express first.
Then I tried to install the service pack for SQL Server. I got the error message, "A recently applied update, KB913090, failed to install.", while it was upgrading the Setup Support Files.

Failure To Install SQL Server 2005 SP1

Jan 15, 2007

I am trying to apply MS SQL Server 2005 SP1 onto a 2 node cluster running Windows Server 2003, but it fails for SQL and the Analysis Services components of SQL Server, the error I am getting is MSP returned 1603 for both components. I have tried rebooting the machines but still get the same issue, the only additional dependency for SQL that I have added is for a 2nd physical disk. log details are below.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide on this problem.

Sql Server 2005 Job Failure Information

Dec 18, 2007

Hi,
I have scheduled a job that runs every minute.
If the job does not succeed, then I would like my front end application to be notified.
I am not sure if this is a reasonable way but I am thinking of somehow
populating a table (Only if the scheduled job fails) in sql server and then read that table every minute from the front end application.
So, is it possible to populate a table if a job fails?
I do not see any options for this in the properties of the job.
Thanks

Failure To Apply SP2 To SQL Server 2005 EE

Nov 29, 2007

I am running SQL Server Enterprise Edition Build 9.0.1399 as a default instance on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2.

Whenever I try to apply Service Pack 2, I obtain the following error:

A recently applied update, KB921896, failed to install

I looked into the other threads but they either discuss community versions of SQL Server or named instances - niether or which apply to me. I also looked but there are no folders named MSSQLSERVER on this machine.

Can somebody Please Help as this is preventing me from deploying a major solution.

Thanks!

SQL Server 2005 Authentication Failure

Sep 11, 2006

Hi,

not sure if this is the right place to raise this question. If not please move this message.

I configured a Sql-Server 2005 installation -that is running on my computer for test purposes- with "Windows Authentication". I had to change my Windows password recently and it seems as if SQL-Server does not accept my account anymore. The event viewer told me that service startups failed because user or password are unkown.

Does anybody know how I may get access again? The problem seems to be that I cannot change back to my old password -unless I change it six or more times...

Thanks for helping me out!
