SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition Licensing (How To Install Without A License, Then Require License On First Run)
Oct 13, 2006
I have a VERY Legitmate use to install sql 4 workgroups on a pc without licensing it. I am making a disk image for MANY pcs to be imaged and load licensing after the imaging is completed.
I have been able to do this with Windows XP Professional, MS Office 2003 and a couple non-Ms programs. The information for MS software even came from their KB, so I know what I am doing is legit. I just can't find any information on doing this for my sql app.
The wrong Cd set was used to install Sql Server 2005 enterprise edition. I need to ensure the license for Sql server is the license from the other CD. is there a way to switch the license without un-installing SQL Server?
I need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition 64-bit running on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition 64-bit. Instead of installing it on every single machine I thought of installing it on one of them, updating it with all the necessary updates, creating a ghost image of the updated system and database and copying the image on all the other machines. After doing it I however need to update both the system and SQL Server license keys. And there comes my question whether one can change the SQL Server license key after the installation??
I have a customer, Customer who has purchased SQL Server Standard Edition 2005 via Open License Agreement. The product key is not available with the media.
I checked with eOpen team and confirmed that SQL 2005 does not require product key or Volume License Key for installation.
however, according to the VKB article 331355 titled "eOpen License Web Site" under "Exceptions" it is mentioned as:
SQL Server: The product key is distributed with the media. If the customer did not get a product key with the media, refer them to their reseller. The product key is hidden between two shrink-wrapped CDs.

Hi, We have MSDN subscription and got VS2005 and SQLServer2005. Our developer develops applications bey using them. One of the application that he has runs periodically and export data from SQLServer2005 to xml files in development machine. We are wondering if we need to buy SQLServer 2005 license for this process. Thanks for your help.
We have a .NET Remoting application whose "server instance" connects to SQL Server Express and send data via remoting to its client application. There is no need for other direct access to SQL Server except for the "server instance". Now my software vender advices us to upgrade to SQL Server WorkGroup edition and now we are facing the question which license to buy. Could you advice us?
We have installed the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise trail version for 180 days. As it specifies in the documentation that it exprires after 180 days and in the mean time we have actually made a purchase of the License. Now...do we need to uninstall the trail verision and reset/restart everything again? Please advise.
I would like to setup about 20 websites (each with database search engines) and would like to use SQL Server 2005. This setup will be run by myself (i.e. single user)
I'm a little confused about which license I need. Do I go for the $23k full version or free license (Express) or something in between??
Could someone please advise. Would be happy to submit further details if required
How do we determine on a SQL 2005 server what license type was selected during the install? Where is the informationkept and how it is tracked by SQL Server 2005.
I have one cluster (two machines) of sql server 2005 active/passive called "ClustA" with one Ent. server edition license and another separate server called "STDA" as warm standby server for "ClustA".
I'd like to upgrade from my current SQL Server version: 09.00.3042 (Workgroup edition that comes with SBS upgrade) to the standard edition that I've just purchased. I've attempted to run setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1 from the command prompt and it just tells me that there's nothing new to install.
I don't really want to uninstall the current installation just to do something that shouldn't be complicated to do, upgrading software versions should not be a difficult process.
If I buy MS SQL 2005 Standard edition and install on my production machine, can I later uninstall it and then install it again on ANOTHER MACHINE? (so only one copy is used)
What exactly does a standard SQL 2005 license cover? I want to have 3 client stations entering data, one IIS serving up data to an unknown number of persons via a web page. Under the 1 server 5 CAL package would this setup be covered? or will I have to go the processor route? I might add that the user accessing via the web service would be on an intranet behind a firewall.
I want to change from cal user license to processor license in sql 2005. How do I do this? Do I need to reinstall sql? Assuming I need to reinstall, will my settings be gone?
We have developed an application using VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
Currently, our client is asking if they could buy the SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition.
Is it ok? I'm afraid that the SP we made using CLR and any other functionality might not work.
We are suggesting our client to use the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instead. But for them to save money, can they use the Workgroup Edition instead?
i have sungard campus management system runing on MS SQL Server 2005 trial version, i have bought a new license for MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. can any body help me how to put the new license please.
I am trying to install the workgroup edition on Windows SBS 2003 R2. After the removal of an unwanted SQL Express Edition installation - the standard install of SQL 2005 from CD hangs during setup.

Currently, i am planning to develop a small system for my client by using SQL database. However, i am not sure is it legal to use SQL Express 2005 in this project? I mean setup the SQL Express 2005 in their server then my application will access this database. Is it legal? or Do i need to purchase any license in order to do that? or I need to purchase a SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise version?
I am trying to install the SQL Sever 2005 Workgroup Edition software that came with our Small Business Server 2003 R2 system. I would like to install to the d: drive because space on the c: drive is limited. Can I do that? If so, how?
Simple question. I have a client that needs SQL 2005 Standard installed NOW, and cannot wait for media to arrive. I know I can download the 180 trial of SQL 2005 Enterprise, but can it be licensed as Standard when we purchase?
I made an analysis services project but I can't deploy it because it can't find the server I search for the analysis service in the Service Control Manager but I can't find it. Is it possible to download and install it with this version of sql server (workgroup) ?
We have only a small busines and haven't got too much experience with servers and now have a proliant server coming in with SBS 2003 R2 Premium with the 4 GB max memory that SBS 2003 can handle according to the specs.
We weren't planning on using the SQL 2005 worlgroup edition up till now, but now we might. According to the specs of SQL server 2005 workgroup edition however, it has a max RAM of 3GB!
Is this going to be a problem and should we keep using our previous DB, or can we migrate toward SQL server with the 4 GB of RAM?
I have an SBS 2003 server that is running SQL 2000 standard edition which was recently upgraded to Small Business Server 2003 R2.
I have installed SQL 2005 workgroup edition on the SBS 2003 R2 server which acts both as an AD server and Exchange server. I installed SQL 2005 for the purpose of using SQL 2005 for my sharepoint services on the Small Business Server R2.
Now I have SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 workgroup edition installed, but I'm unsure whether I can uninstall the SQL 2000 and how to know whether the sharepoint instance is running in SQL 2005 or SQL 2000?
Additionally, I have some MSDE's running for WSUS and Server Reporting which are installed by the Small Business Server installation.
Which tools should I use to become familiar with identifying the databases and which version of the database engine is used for which database regardless of whether it is a SQL instance or a MSDE instance.
How can I identify which SQL versions are not in use and whether I can uninstall if not needed.
I've heard that the Standard version supports the use of CommandNotification and that the Express version does not. What about the Workgroup edition? The reason I'm asking is because there is a substantial monthly difference in cost between the two versions if I were to have my site hosted. I've been developing with MS SQL 2005 Express so obviously I have not tested this caching feature. Are command notifications reliable? On paper, it sounds impressive and extremely efficient especially if a site is to have heavy traffic and you can't afford the overhead of heavy database processing that is useless if the data is unchanged. Does the Workgroup edition support automatic change notifications? Have automatic notifications been proven reliable and vastly more efficient than crude polling methods? Thanks in advance.
If I install an instance of SQL Server on a box with 4 processors but specify in the licensing part of the installation procedure that it's a '2 processor license', does that really mean that SQL Server will only use 2 of the 4 processors? I ask because, having done this, if I check the SQL Server instance's properties, on the Processors tab, there are 4 processors ticked - giving the impression that 4 processors are being used by this SQL Server instance. Can anyone throw some light on this?
Another question... If I wish to reconfigure the same SQL Server instance from a 2 to a 4 processor 'per processor' license, how can this be done?
Hi all,I am performing a consolidation of all SQL servers in my environment. Ihave run the tool to find out what level patching they have and whatedition they are running on, but is there a tool so I can scan thenetwork and find out what licensing they are setup for (processor vs.seat)?Even if I have to enumerate each one, one at a time I would be OK withthat. I just don't want to have to login to each server and go toControl Panel and click on the Licensing.Command line is super-duper.Thanks,Josh
