SQL Server 2005 Connection And Configuration

Feb 27, 2006

Hi,

A couple of small questions for anyone who can help. I am writing an application and am a newbie with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and Visual C# (using Visual Studio 2005 pro).

My application will need to run on 6 different PC's at one time with our office server hosting the database. Since the server is hosting the database, is it necessary for the individual PC's to have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on their hard drives also to communiucate back to the server?

Also, where can I find some nice example code for connecting and performing some simple tasks under C#?

How It Is Working Using SQL Server Configuration Type To Store Connection Strings

Dec 12, 2007

Hello,
I am wondering how it is going to work using SQL Server configuration type to store connection string in the SQL Server table. How does SSIS know what database to connect to if its connection string is store in the database? Thanks

The Connection Name 'LocalSqlServer' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty.

Sep 27, 2007

Hi,
I'm having a BIG problem, this is my 3rd day looking for answer !I'm trying to create a custom membership provider with MS SQL database 2005 but not the default ASPNETDB. I've changed the web.config to be as following:<connectionStrings><add name="sqlConn" connectionString="Data Source=.;Integrated Security=True;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings> <system.web><trace enabled="true" /><roleManager enabled="true" /><authentication mode="Forms" />
<membership defaultProvider="MySqlProvider"><providers><remove name="AspNetSqlProvider"/><add name="MySqlProvider" connectionStringName="SqlConn" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" applicationName="/" /></providers></membership>
But when I try to login to the site using the login control the following error occurs:
Server Error in '/etest' Application.

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

Jan 18, 2008

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

Line 24: </Fields>
Line 25: </aspetailsView>
Line 26: <aspqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStringsINEMgtConnectionString2 %>"
Line 27: InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Signup(first_name, last_name, email, customer_id) VALUES (,,,)"
Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>

This is indeed the code from my single page app.

The dump is:

[InvalidOperationException: The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty.]

After Googleing, asking Go Daddy for info (which they dont give) , etc for three weeks, I need serious mental help
in the form of a solution of this problem. Your help with the problem or the name of a good mental health professional in eastern N.C. (maybe both) would be appreciated.

SQL Server Configuration Manager: Connection To Target Machine Could Not Be Made In A Timely Fashion

Dec 5, 2007

I have a SQL Server 2005 box that was moved from a domain environment to a non-domain environment and was never dropped from its original domain before moving over. Subsequently a new domain was created at the data center this SQL Server box now resides in. The machine was dropped from its old domain and joined to the new one.

All the while the service accounts were set to the local admin account. When I tried to start the Configuration Manager I got the message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fashion.". I read some blog entries and tried changing all the service accounts to Local System and the error message still came up.

All of the SQL Server services run fine. It is just this management console that I cannot open. I wasn't with this employer when this box was moved to the data center so I do not know if it worked prior and there isn't anyone here that could give me its history.

Any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server 2005 Configuration Database

May 31, 2007

I am working on creating a configeration database based on the information pulled from a large number (over 40) of servers. I am newly out of college and don't have a lot of experience with things like this, but I am trying to create a configuration database. I need to know the best way to create a connection to all of the SQL servers on my network and then automate the pulling of data from these SQL servers. The types of data I would need are things like Instance ID, DBMS Version, Database Properties, Database Name, Modification Date, Last full backup, last transaction log backup, etc. I have been pointed towards either working with OSQL/SQL CMD, in which case could someone please point me towards a guide, and SSIS, I am reposting this thread in the SSIS area. I need to take all of the gathered data and place it into a central repository database after formatting it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cannot Connect To SQL Server 2005 DB From ASP.NET Configuration Tool

Sep 25, 2006

Hello,I am trying to connect to a DB, which is hosted on an SQL Server 2005 by a provider, using ASP.NET Configuration Tool. The result is the following error when I click on the Security Tab:---There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) ---The hosting provider checked that my connection string is correct. They do not know why I get the error, though. Here is a relevant snippet from my web.config:<connectionStrings> <remove name="LocalSqlServer" /> <add name="LocalSqlServer"connectionString="Data Source=ABC;Integrated Security=false;Initial Catalog=ABC;User ID=ABC;Password=ABC"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings>ABC is a mock :)Could anyone pls help? It is much appreciated.

~ Regarding SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration ~

Nov 9, 2006

Sorry for the annoying. I would like to the configuration settings for the surface area. There's an option which able to let us change computer (whether is local computer or remote computer). Let say I put my own computer's name (Hans as example) for configuration as the remote compute, it's work fine to me. However, if I put my remote computer's name, it displays this error message to me.

Error :

Computer Tomato does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again.

I am sure that the remote computer is working since I am able to ping the remote computer and test on telnet as well. But why it seems that surface area can't detect my remote computer. Hope can get some resistance from everyone here. Thanx alot.

Best Regards,

Hans

How To Migrate Linked Server Configuration SQL 2000 And 2005?

Mar 14, 2007

I plan to migrate a SQL 2000 instance with everything in it to another SQL2000 server, and eventually in the future to SQL 2005.

I've pretty much figured out how to migrate everything execept the linked server configuration (there're many linked servers configured in the old server with different security credentials). I'm wondering if there's way I can save the linked server configuration and restore it to the other server.

Thanks much.

SQL Server 2005 - SSIS: Global Package Configuration

Jan 7, 2008

I am new to SQL server 2005 and have a config question:

I am controlling database connection info using XML indirect config - no problems there.

Essentially I am going to have a number of packages that need to use a common file path, that might change from one server to the next, e.g. Server 1: C:sourceFiles versus Server 2: D:sourceFiles. Within this directory the filenames will remain static. So in the flat file connection manager I'd like to use a variable to reflect the folder - but I don't want to have to create this for each package.

So, I thought I would create a system environment variable and create expressions for the connection managers - something like %SOURCE_DIR% + "file.csv" - but this does not evaluate correctly.

So then i though I could use the SQL server configurations table with a configurationFilter SOURCE_DIR and appropriate configuration value - but then how do I access this in the flat file connection manager to create a dynamic file name?

So essentially I want a variable/property available globally to all my packages and potential flat file connection managers that help me to centrally control file path locations.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Connection Strings, Trusted-connection VS Username-password, SQL Server 2005 Express

Mar 9, 2007

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.

BACKGROUND...

Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.

QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?

Please advise.
Thank you.

Cannot See SQL Server 2005 Services In SQL Server Configuration Manager

May 10, 2006

I cannot see any services within "SQL Server 2005 Services" in SQL Server Configuration Manager.

I am new to SQL Server 2005 and recently installed all of the SQL Server 2005 64-bit components on to a Windows 2003 64-bit server. I can create and view databases via SQL Server Management Studio. I can also start and stop the SQL Server service for the default instance via SQL Server Management Studio. But I should be able to start/stop the service via SQL Server Configuration Manager and I believe I'm supposed to use SQL Server Configuration Manager to make changes to the services.

I'm concerned that something may have become corrupted and is effected the SQL Server Configuration Manager. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Missing Some Components In SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration

Feb 29, 2008

I was studying the SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration tool to see how i could increase security.

I cannot find some of the components in “Surface area Configuration of Features.

For example DAC appears to be missing. This is a dedicated administrator connection that allows an administrator to connect to a server.

Is this because I have SQL 2005 express instead of the professional version or could it even be to do with the operating system (XP home)

Only the following components are listed under "Database Engine":

Ad Hoc Remote Queries
CLR Integration
Native XML Web Services
OLE Automation
Service Broker
Xp_cmdshell

Configuration Of SQL SERVER 2005 Express Train For The Accesses Network (TCP/IP)

Feb 11, 2008

Hello. I am called Narsiste.
I have a problem of configuration in SQL server 2005 express train. In fact, I do not know how to make the configuration to tackle the databases SQL server 2005 express train which are on a station has starting from a station B (both being in a network LAN).
But I read in the module of €śconfiguration of the surface of exposure for the services and connections - localhost€? that €śBy defect, the editions Express train, Evaluation and Developer SQL SERVER 2005 authorize only local connections.€?. As it is BY DEFECT, I said myself that it will have to be changed a parameter so that access TCP/IP can go on this version of SQL SERVER.

Here is the message which I have:
€śAn error occurred during the establishment of a connection to the waiter. May 3, 2008

Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. From the stack, it is calling the System.Web.Profile and crashed when it tries to open a connection atSystem.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject). I already migrated all aspnet_user, aspnet_roles, etc.. and don't get any connection errors. It is only when I try to get the profile data. This works on  my pc, but throws an error on my lunarpage website.Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,AJAn error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. SQL Configuration Manager And SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Tools

May 2, 2007

I have just finished installing SQL 2005 Ent Edition on Win 2000 Adv Server, SQL2005 SP2, and SP2 Hotfix KB934458. After the installation, I could see and configure all services via SQL Configuration Manager and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tools. This worked for a couple of days and now both configuration tools no longer detect SQL2005 components. SQL Server Surface Area Configuration issued an error that said "No SQL Server 2005 components were found on specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLAC)". SQL Configuration Manager did not list any installed services. I don€™t know what caused this. Anyone has any idea? Please help! Below is the Installation Report which shows installed components.

Error During First Configuration After Installing Reporting Services (SQL Server 2005 Express)

Jan 27, 2008

Hi,

I have problem during first configuration of Reporting Services from MS SQL 2005 Server Express with Advanced Services SP2. The error occurs when configuring virtual directory (Reporting Services Configuration Manager -> Report Server Virtual Directory). When I try to create new virtual directory I can see following messages:

Number of errors: 0
Create Virtual Directory

The virtual directory was created and assigned.
Changing Secure Connection Level

After last message Windows reports that SQL Server 2005 Reporting Configuration Tool has encountered a problem and needs to close (and I can send report to Microsoft).

IIS shows that virtual directory under default web site was created.

Evenet viewer (application log) shows .NET Framework 2.0 error:
EventType clr20r3, P1 rsconfigtool.exe, P2 9.0.3042.0, P3 45cd6ee2, P4 rsconfigtool, P5 9.0.242.0, P6 45cd6ee2, P7 15a, P8 5, P9 system.nullreferenceexception, P10 NIL

My environment:
MS SQL Reporting Services Version 9.00.3042.00
Windows XP Proffessional SP2
IIS 5.1
all components are fresh new installations. The only additional configuration I've made was adding IWAM_<hostname> as WebServiceAccount, all other configuration is default.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards
Slawomir Nasiadka

SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server 2005

Dec 18, 2007

I have Microsoft Office Professional installed. It came with SQL SErver 2005 but I am not sure how to configure it. It is running( the SQL Server under Windows Services) but I can't find the MMC console to administer it. I tried linking from Access to create a SQL Server datasource but the SErver does not show up in the dialog box. Under Program Menu/SQL Server there is a Configuration Tools folder with the SQL Server Configuration manager. Is this the same as the MMC? My SQL Server is on my local computer with the Access Database I want to upsize. There are 3 or so folders under SQL Server Configuration Manager . SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration and SQL NAtive Client Configuration. I don't know what I'm supposed to do at this point but what I would like to do is add my user name and password as the administrator and find the MMC console. I would like to create a datasource in Access to the SQL Server. I am not sure whether I need the client or not since the SErver is on the same computer as the database. This is only a test run.

I would appreciate getting unstuck. Do I also need to install the MMC separate from the SQL Server. Since it installed when I installed Office Professional I didn't go through the steps of installing it and somethings seem like they are missing.

tia,

Configuration/Connection Problem

Mar 8, 2007

Back home at my office I built an ASP.net app that successfully connected to my SQL Server 2000 database, which resides on a different computer from my laptop, which is my development machine.

I'm now traveling and wanted to keep on working. So I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and successfully restored my database on it. But I'm having problems making the initial connection to the database.

In the Web.config file I have these pertinent variables:

<appSettings>
<add key="DataBaseServer" value="server"/>
<add key="DataBase" value="Incentives"/>
<add key="UserId" value="sa"/>
<add key="Password" value=""/>
</appSettings>

And back home, everything works fine. So I thought the obvious thing to change was the value of "DataBaseServer". My laptop's name is "RMDW" so I first tried that. Didn't work. Then I tried "RMDWSQLEXPRESS". Didn't work. Then I tried "localhost". Didn't work. Finally I tried "localhostSQLEXPRESS". Didn't work.

I'm thinking that perhaps I have the syntax wrong. But also, when I did install SQL Express I chose "Windows Authentication" mode and am thinking now that I shouldn't have.

Might anyone have any ideas to help me resolve this?

Oracle Connection Manager Configuration Help

Apr 14, 2006

Hi, I dont know if I should post this question here, or on oracle forums, but here goes ...

I made a simple package that performs 2 Excecute SQL Tasks, one task does a select query on a SQL Server DB Table, the other task does a select query on an Oracle DB Table.

The package runs fine in BIDS when debugging, but when I deployed the package to a file system and added it to an sql server agent Job, it all went wrong ...

I tried the ms oledb dataprovider (ole db) for oracle but also the oracleclient data provider (ado.net) but the package always fails.

The error messages in the logfile are these:

event
OnError

computer
ComputerName

operator
NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM

source
Execute SQL Task PLSQL

sourceid
{B29C4FC9-3345-4657-8680-F770B8C2E136}

executionid
{7312A7EC-2555-4268-BB29-38659507BADD}

starttime
14/04/2006 16:40

endtime
14/04/2006 16:40

datacode
-1073573396

databytes
0x

message
Failed to acquire connection "aaa.bbb.oracleClient". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.

the OnError logrow for the package itself says almost the same.

Now my question is: What do I need to configure to get it all working? I think I need to configure the oracle db no? What should I configure? ...
