I believe that I mistakenly attempted to apply the Analysis Services component of this update before applying the SQL Server component. The update now fails continuously with the following message:

The update fails although I have cleaned the registry of any reference to it. Another article indicated that the hotfix may delete registry keys required, for instance, to operated SSIS if applied in the wrong order. Here, it appears to be preventing the hotfix from being reapplied. I have ensured that all necessary permissions are available and the services are running in domain user accounts with the necessary rights. I'm the administrator on the machine.
Is there a way to get this hotfix applied without having to completely rip and rebuild my server instance?
The Kb article says to install all component patches, even if you are not running them, to avoid errors...the reporting services hotfix would not install(obviously since reporting svcs is not installed).....now I get the following erro, when trying to connect to the SSIS on my sql server...oh, I am trying to connect locally on the server it self too....
Cannot connect to CRP-DAY1-SQLs1.

I am attempting to install the first of the cumulative hotfix packages ( SQL2005-KB918222-x64-ENU.exe) after applying Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2005 std edn 64-bit installation. The service pack installed no problem but the hot fix fails with the following errors in the log file below.
I have installed the 32-bit versions of the hotfix packages onto a different server and I did not get these errors.
Any help on how to sort this out would be much appreciated!

I do experiment a problem when trying to install the mentionned patch on my Windows XP SP2 machine (fully patched).
Interestingly, the patch works fine for the named instance, which is a "clean" install of SQL Server 2005 SP1, while it fails on the default instance, which is a SQL 2005 SP1 upgraded in place from SQL Server 2000 SP4. Both instances are Developer editions...
The error is along the following lines:

We are trying to Install the Hot fix KB936305 on our SQL 2005 SP2 on Win2k3 machine. We are able to install the hotfix in our test environment but its failing in our PILOT environment. Below is the log for the installation. Any clues on why this happens??

We just upgraded 2 sql servers from sql server 2000 sp3a to sql server 2005 build 2153, and merge rep exists between these 2 servers.
However, after sql server upgrade, we had to reinitialize merge replication and now the merge agent is reporting 2 errors
1)
Error messages:
The Merge Agent failed to upgrade triggers, metadata and stored procedures on the Subscriber to versions compatible with SQL Server 2005. Restart synchronization, and if this failure continues to occur reinitialize the subscription. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199403) Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147199403
Invalid column name 'metadata_select_proc'. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 207) Get help: http://help/207
Invalid column name 'delete_proc'. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 207) Get help: http://help/207
The merge process could not connect to the Publisher 'Server:database'. Check to ensure that the server is running. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199368) Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147199368
Another merge agent for the subscription(s) is running or the server is working on a previous request by the same agent. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 21036) Get help: http://help/21036
looking inside the sp_MSensure_single_instance stored procedure, it's trying to obtain an exclusive lock on resource 'Merge Agent Name' but fails and returns -1
this is the stored procedure executed by sp_MSensure_single_instance and @retcode = -1 and thus cannot obtain exclusive lock on resource
so i think it's failing because for some reason MSmerge_PAL_role database role does not have enough rights to obtain exclusive lock on necessary resources
i've tried many things to fix this, including scripting out and dropping all merge rep, turning off replication db option and reapplying replication create scripts on the server, and even manually deleting the MSmerge_PAL_role database role but still doesn't work
I have two clustered server. (ms sql 2000 server, windows 2003 server) now i need to add one new server to the cluster and take the secondary node off. I have installed SP4 & hotfix in my SQL Server cluster before.
My question is do I still need to install SP4 & hotfix in my new server?
I've read about this hotfix at http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_933097.aspx but I can't find anything on microsoft.com about it. It sounds like a worthwhile hotfix, but I'm wondering about the absence of an announcement on microsoft.com.
I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.
Here is the Summary log, for what it's worth:

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(
Log Location: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGHotfixSQL9_Hotfix_KB921896_sqlrun_sql.msp.log MSP Error: 29537 SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot find the object 'dm_exec_query_resource_semaphores', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.. I tried to search internet, however, I couldn't get solution.
My SQL server 2005 is standard version, OS Windows server 2003 sp2, I am using Administrator account to install it.
I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005. After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports. Regards,
I have never installed sql server before and I didnt know if I just take the sql server 2005 standard edition media and boot off it and do a fresh install that way or do I have to install Windows server
I went to one of the Microsoft "Ready To Launch" events over a year ago. Microsoft was gracious and gave everyone who attended a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. I have installed the Visual Studio and use it all of the time. I also installed the SQL server 2005 but I can not find the application on my computer. After the install the only items that appear to have been installed are the following: SQL Server Configuration tools(SQL Server Configuration manager,SQL Server Error and usage reporting, SQL Server surface area confiuration, Reporting Services configuration). There is also a menu icon labeled "Microsoft SQL server upgrade advisor" and SQL server upgraded wizard. That is all. I can't find anything that is analogus to the Enterprise manager that was in SQL server 2000 or anything that is analogous to Query Analyzer of 2005.
Can someone help me out? We use SQL server 2005 so I know how it looks. I just can't see where it insalled. I don't think it did?
(1) I have already installed of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition first.
(1) Can I install visual studio 2008 without the 2005 express edition of SQL server? Will be any problems because I don't have express edition of SQL server? Do I need to install the express edition of SQL server as well?
(3) How to use SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition instance on visual studio 2008?
I am trying to install SQL 2005 in a 2-node virtual Windows 2003 cluster. I set the cluster up through Virtual Server 2005 with 2 virtual nodes and one virtual domain. The nodes can connect to each other as well as the physical machine. When I try to install a fresh copy of SQL 2005 on my cluster, I get an error every time. The error stops the installation while checking system configuration after installing prerequisites. The log file entry is as follows:

The program shortcut "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" seems to be mising from the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" Start menu added by the current Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Where is it? How to workaround?
I am trying to do Download details SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases (April 2006) -> GettingStartedWithSQLSamples.htm which says "a. Open a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, point to Visual Studio Tools, and then click Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt." but I can find no such command prompt within "Visual Studio Tools", only "Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger{, Configuration Wizard}".
What's wrong? How to fix or workaround? I'd install .NET SDK 2.0 to get it's Command Prompt but that's about 570MB merely for a command prompt!

VS looks OK and MSSQLSERVER and SQLEXPRESS etc. show in ‘Services/Local’ as started/automatic.
I am trying to do Management Studio Tutorial. For the change from SEM.
The problem is in opening SQL Server Management Studio there is a dialog ‘Connect to Server’ showing Type = Database engine, Authentication = Windows Authentication, Server name = blank.
When I enter Server name = MSSQLSERVER and press Connect I get an error message ‘Cannot connect to MSSQLSERVER… Error 53.
How do I get to see the tutorial and recognise the SQL?

hi! i just joined this group today after a colleague told me about it.anyway, i'm new to SQL and haven't tried installing any version of it.I do have vb 6.0 though on my pc. My problem is that I can't installSQL server 05 EE, VB 2005 or VW 2005. I have downloaded all of theinstaller from the Microsoft site as well as the dotnetfix which issupposed to install the .net framework 2.0.whenever i try to install SQL server EE, it is telling me that it hasfound beta components. but i don't have any beta versions of SQL. Itried uninstalling my Vb 6.0 thinking its causing the error, but samething happened. The next thing I did is I uninstall my .net 2.0 and when i try toinstall VB or VW 2005, i got to the step where it is trying to downloadthe .net framework 2.0 but it is taking so long. Question: is thedotnetfix.exe which installed .net 2.0, different from the .net 2.0that the setup.exe of VB2005 will download? if yes, may i know if thereis a direct site where i can manually download and install it so theVB2005 will just skip that part and go on with the installation? When i downloaded the exe files for SQL, .net 2.0, VB and VW, i didselect the SAVE option and saved them on my external mini hard drive soI can install it at home. Does that make any difference? could thatcause the error?pretty clear that i am a newbie with this stuff and i never thoughtthat it would be this hassle to install them heheheh any help, in adetailed way if possible, would highly be appreciated.thanks so much!manny

I have installed all components for SQL Server 2005 except for the WorkStation Options component. When I went back and tried to install this component only, I got an error.
There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.
Does anybody know how I can install this component without any errors?

I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on my portable. I have XP Professional and I have SQL Serve 2000 Developer Edition installed. At the end of the installation, I noticed that SQL 2005 did NOT install a service (at least I don't find it in the services. But it just connects to the SQL 2000 service. I decided NOT to install the example DB's to save some diskspace. Also the installation procedure didn't ask me for an instance name.
What did I wrong? And what do I have to do to install the SQL2005 service?
Thank you.

I installed SQL's SP1 (KB913090) last night on my sql server 2005enterprise x64 box, but when I check out windows updates on the web, itwants me to download SP1 and install.Next, I ran the SP1 I had downloaded a couple of months ago, and itwants to patch again. I would think it would say its already installedand I dont need to install again.I then tried SELECT @@VERSION and it returns:Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.2040.00 (X64) Mar 13 2006 11:37:12Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition(64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)I assume Build 3790: Service Pack 1 is for the O/S.Does 9.00.2040.00 indicate that I have installed SP1 for sql?TIARob
I have a AMD 64-bit multi-processor server that is currently running the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2005 without any problems and we are using it. (I followed the instructions on how to install the x64 version of the v2.0 of the .NET Framework and it is running properly.)
Now I want to move forward with installing the 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005 and the associated services such as SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
The plan is to basically uninstall the 32-bit version of SQL Server and then just install the x64 version, Are their any issues with the installation? I didn't see any 'read-me' on the x64 DVD disk. While we have lots of experience with 32-bit installations...this is our first x64 box...so I thought I should ask.
I tried to install SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 OS. While installing Workstation components "Error Writing to file:Microsoft.SqlServer.Monitor.FrameWork.dll . Verify that you have access to that directory" is displayed.
