SQL Server 2005 Installation Hangs On Removing Temporary Files Step

Feb 2, 2007

I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:

OWC11

SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files

SQL Server Database Services

Reporting Services

Visual Studio Integrated Development

SQL Server Books Online

SQLXML4

Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.

The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.

I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.

Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 - Removing Backup Files Hangs

Oct 6, 2007

HELP!

For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.

For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.

After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.

Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Marc Mueller

SQL Server 2005 Installation Failure On Vista - Hangs At IIS

Feb 16, 2007

I just bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed and was able to install Visual Studio 2005 Pro, but when attempting to install SQL Server 2005 it just hangs at the IIS detection step. I was using the administrative account. I was able to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2000, but I need 2005.

Some posts mention IIS version issues and 32 vs 64 bit version issues. Can anyone ellaborate on what is happening and why? What is the work around?

SQL Server 2005 SP1 Installation Hangs At Authentication Verification

May 9, 2006

After the installer has asked for authentication mode and has started verifying the authentication it simply hangs. I've let it sit there for an hour before taking the installer forcibly down but nothing seems to be happening except for two osql.exe processes showing up in the task manager.

I've tried both windows authentication and SQL server authentication but the outcome is always the same. At the same time I'm, however, able to login to the database engine and all services with management studio using both authentication modes.

The last few lines in HotFix.log are as follows:

05/09/2006 09:49:09.999 Authenticating user using Windows Authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.015 SQL Service MSSQLServer was previously running, ready for authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.218 SQL Agent Service SQLSERVERAGENT was previously running
05/09/2006 09:49:12.093 User authentication was successful

This would indicate that there's nothing wrong with the authentication but with whatever is supposed to take place after that.

There are quite a few lines in the log similar to the one below:

05/09/2006 09:47:08.438 Failed to read associated hotfix build information for the following file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBinnSQLServr.exe

Redist9_Hotfix_KB913090.log seems to be the only individual log file that ends with line saying "Hotfix package launched" whereas all other logs have several lines of checks being completed successfully.

Any ideas what might be causing the installer to hang and how to fix it?

SQL 2005 SP1 Installation Hangs

May 31, 2006

I am trying to install SQL 2005 SP1 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 platform. I have repeatedly tried this, and have trashed and re-built the platform all to no avail. I keep getting the same problem. The installation hangs, using 0 CPU apparently after successfully extracting the files to disk. It leaves the HOTFIX.EXE running, and cancelling it ends the process. The HOTFIX.LOG looks like this:

5/31/2006 10:05:03.185 ================================================================================

05/31/2006 10:05:03.185 Hotfix package launched

05/31/2006 10:05:03.205 Successfully read registry key: ProgramFilesDir, string value = G:Program Files

I have been searching various forums for an answer and have found one hit here (but no answer):

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/aspnet_answers/SQLServersetup/May2006/post26789173.asp

After reading this I cancelled the CMD.EXE instead of the HOTFIX.EXE and duly got a "Product Enumeration" popup window. The HOTFIX.LOG now looks like this:

Multi-step SSIS Job Hangs

Aug 7, 2006

I have two SSIS packages that I want to run in one SQL Agent job as two individual steps. The two packages run fine when they are in separate jobs. However, when I run the job conaining both SSIS packages (under the same proxy), the first SSIS package starts, but hangs in the middle.

I then tried setting the DelayValidation flag to True as suggested for a similar issue in another thread from this forum. After changing the DelayValidation flag to True for all containers and tasks on the second SSIS package, the first SSIS package ran completely through sucessfully, but the job continued executing for hours and the second SSIS package never started. I finally killed the job.

Any ideas as to what is the problem here? I have logged to the event viewer and see that the first package completes sucessfully. They run successfully in separate jobs, but I can not get them to run together within the same job without hanging.

Any help is appreciated,

Paulette

I am trying to install Windows XPe dev kit and this is the step I am getting stuck on. If I try to skip this step and setup the database the setup obviously tells me that i dont have sql 200 or MSDE installed.

The KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811479 describes the syptoms perfectly, but fast user switching isnt even enabled for this machine and is not the source of the problem.

Unexpected Error While Removing Backup Files In Sql 2005 Setup

Dec 18, 2007

I was trying an edition upgrade from SQL 2005 standard x64 to SQL 2005 enterprise x64 using the "setup SKUUPGRADE=1" from the command line. The SO is W2003 server R2 enterprise and I have a SQL clustered environment with 2 nodes (active/passive).

I select to upgrade the SQL module and I mark the checkbox for the cluster installation. The installation seems to work properly untill setup is doing the task "removing backup files". Then 2 "unexpected error" message appears as follows. The 2 above windows appear when you click on the help icon.

Reporting Problems W/ MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step By Step To MS

Apr 26, 2007

I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:

select * from vProductProfitability

where year = 2003 and

MonthNumberOfYear = 1

The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.

I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.

This humble grasshopper seeks wisdom.

Respectfully Submitted,

Installation Hangs When On A Large Network

Sep 14, 2007

Hi All,

I have to do a lot of SQL Server Express 2005 installations and I've noticed that when I'm doing an install on a machine that's on a large network that the installer will "hang" towards the end of the installation process. The installer will say something about Local Groups and sit there for a really long time. As soon as I take the machine off of the network though (via unplugging the network cable) the installer jumps back into action. Of course, I've not seen this on a stand alone machine either...

It would seem to me that the installer is trying to communicate via the network or something and then when it loses its LAN access it just moves on. But I'm not entirely sure why it would need to do that. More importantly, is there a way that I can keep it from doing this? I'm doing a silent install so maybe I can use a command line swith or property?

In reviewing the command line options I didn't see much that seemed to fit; but perhaps one of you folks know of a way to achieve this.

Thank you for anything you can offer.

This error pops up right after i change the type of the step to "SQL Server Intergration Services Package"

I have made the following configurations:

The user group (windows group) that the user belongs has the following roles in msdb :

db_dtsadmin
db_dtsltuser
db_dtsoperator
SQLAgentOperatorRole
SQLAgentReaderRole
SQLAgentUserRole

i have made a proxy to sql server agent which has the following subsystems :

"SQL Server Integration Services Provider" the proxy is tied to the same login which has those SQLagent and dts roles in msdb database.

Im using windows authentication and the user that logs into the sql server is in the same group that i have set all of the rights.

Ps. Clearly im missing some role or right somewhere because as soon as i give the group sysadmin role then all the users in that group can create SSIS steps in the agent.

Ps. Ps. I have been living under the impression that i dont have to give sysadmin rights to people that create ssis packages and schedule then with the agent.

I have been running my production Web Application for the last 10 months using SQL Server 2005 Express on a dedicated server...and now I am ready to upgrade to the next best version of SQL Server without going broke.
I have 1 dedicated server (with 2 processors) entirely dedicated to hosting this single database intensive Web Application, so my quesiton is...
Should I upgrade to the WorkGroup Edition of SQL Server 2005 ($740) or should I go with the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition that has 5 CALs ($1200 for CD's only at viosoftware.com)?
I look forward to hearing some advice on this matter,

as the installation of SQL Server 2005 takes very long and the installation of SP 2 for it even longer, is it possible to get a DVD from Microsoft, which installs both in one step? Or create such a DVD for yourself using the files on the normal DVD and in the service pack?

(When I asked the same question some years ago about SQL Server 2000 I was told that this would be possible with the next SQL Server version).

I got an access 2002 application front end with a sql server 2005 express back end. Some of my clients are having some difficulties. After using the application for a while, some of the users are finding that the system just hangs up. It usually happens after the front end application has been running for about an hour (sometimes sooner and sometimes later). There are perhaps 1 to 5 concurrent users and I have checked to see if there are any firewalls stalling it (I think I check all of them)- Is there any way that SQL Server 2005 express could be caused to just stall- This even occurs with the odd laptop. All the appropriate protocols are enabled as well. These databses are not very large.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRETIATED!!!

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Install Hangs - Does MS Plan To Fix?

Oct 19, 2006

I am experiencing extremely slow behavior (no activity for > 30 mins) during a SS 2005 Dev Edition install on XP SP2 on various steps during the SQL Server Database Services step - e.g. during "Setting File Security". This is very annoying.

I've found many postings on this issue indicating that OS calls in this part of the install (e.g. LookupAccountName()) are network speed dependent.

Does Microsoft have any plans to rework this part of the install to rid the need of these calls? I really wish the install would be possible without these calls - it's driving me crazy monitoring this for hours. We've got to roll SS2005 out to a couple hundred developers eventually and this isn't going to cut it.

Thanks for your time on this matter.

Best Regards,

Mike

FTP Task And Temporary Internet Files

Apr 27, 2006

I have created a package within SQL Server SSIS which includes an FTP Task, deployed it to our SQL Server (2005 SP1) msdb database and am running this job under SQL Agent on Windows Server 2003.  Due to company security requirements this job has to be run under a service account within SQL Agent.  The problem with this is that even though a directory is specified within the FTP Task to place any downloaded files into, the files are first written to the TIF (Temporary Internet Files) directory of "Default User" which is on the system drive.  Based on corporate standards the system drive (C:) on our servers are only configured with enough space for the OS and other system files.  All of the files being transferred are compressed, but some are still well over 1GB in size.  The result is that many of our downloads are failing due to the system drive running out of space.

I have attempted to run IE by using "Run As" with the service account credentials, and have changed the location of the TIFs to a different drive, rebooted and verified the settings.  When the SQL Agent job was run again, the files were still being written to the "Default User" directory on the system drive.  I also created a new template account with the TIFs pointing to a non-system drive and used the User Profiles functionality of System Properties to copy the new template account to "Default User", but still the files are being written to the system drive.

My questions are:

is there a way to stop the FTP Task from using TIF (i.e. just directly write the file to the location specified)
is there a best practice around how to setup a service account and have it create a proper user profile that can be managed separate from "Default User"
short of specifying during the OS install, is there a way to move the "Default User" profile directory to a different drive

SSIS, BIDS And Temporary Files

Feb 1, 2007

Why are some SSIS files, generated by the Import/Export Data wizard put into the local users temp folder? Why are these not compiled with the package when the solution is built?

Is there some setting I am missing?

This architecture is kind of silly, as the server always needs access to the temp folder on the local machine to run.

How can I get these temp files packaged with the rest of the package and deployed to the server so the server can run independent of the machine I develop the package on?

Thanks,

Jeff

SQLAgent - TSQL Jobs Hangs (SQL Server 2005)

Aug 15, 2007

I have two tables
t_DTM_DATA_STAGING around 2 million records
t_DTM_DATA around 251 million records

The below SQL statement looks for records in the t_DTM_DATA_STAGING table that are not in the t_DTM_DATA table and adds them to a 3rd table. (t_DTM_DATA_STAGING2)

This statement has been running fine for weeks, but now it seems to get hung every day. I ran sp_Who2 and it says the status is runnable. I let it run for around 5 or 6 hours the other day to see if it will finish but it didn't. This SQL job is step 3 in a 6 step SQLAgent job that usually finishes in 30 to 45 minutes.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. No other jobs are running at the time this job runs.

Could this SQL statement be written a better way?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Jerid

Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) -- Installation Failed

May 2, 2006

I'm trying in vain to upgrade sql server 2000 to 2005 with great headache and pain.

I (finally) have removed all Beta, and other incompatible version of .NET, Visual Studio and any other offending components, and made it to the first page of the install shield.

The .NET 2.0 components installed fine - but I get a fatal error trying to install the SQL Server Set Support Files.

I do have a log file - and have tired searching on the various error codes in it, but am coming up blank. Please advise - this is taking forever!

sample of error msgs in log file:

Linked Server To Text Files: Is Possible To Detect Changes Made To Those Files? (SQL Server 2005)

Sep 3, 2007

Hi gurus,

I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).

Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?

Thanks a lot in advance!
