SQL Server 2005 Not Starting At Boot, Windows 2000
Aug 15, 2006
Please feel free to redirect me if this has been previously addressed. I've read through the FAQ post and searched the forums, and as yet haven't found anything relevant on Google so I'm hoping you folks can help.
I am using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on a fully patched Windows 2000 Server, and for some reason the database just will not start up when the machine starts or reboots. The service starts fine if I go start it by hand though. This is obnoxious because it prevents me from running fully automated updates to the box since that reboots it at least once a week on "patch Tuesday".
Here are what my related services and their startup types look like:
SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Automatic
SQL Server Active Directory Helper Disabled
SQL Server Browser Disabled
SQL Server VSS Writer Manual
This is a production machine so I'd prefer not to run any services I don't have to. All this database needs to do is sit there and get hit by a local Cold Fusion instance that talks to it by TCP/IP. Any administration on it I tend to do locally with Management Studio Express by remotely logging into the server on it's internal IP.
The really weird thing is, I have these services configured exactly the same on development environments I've created in Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. This seems to be specific to Windows 2000 Server, and I just can't figure it out...
We have a financial software package that has been certified for SQL 2005 and Windows 2003 server. Will SQL 2005 run on a Windows 2000 server? I don’t want to build a new server at this time unless I really have too.
We have an OLD vbscript process that is running on a Windows 2000 box. The box has Sql Server 7.0 on it (not sure if relevant). The process used to hit a Sql Server 2000 database, but that database was recently migrated to 2005 (on different server). Now the connection string obviously no longer works, and we can't even add a DSN to 2005 (does not recognize new server). The machine pings the new SQL server without any problem, but cannot connect for data access.
I assume there should be some driver that I can install to fix this, but have yet to find one on the web. Does anyone have a recommended download to remedy this?
I successfully got SQL 2005 Express with reporting services running under VISTA. Developed some reports in the VISTA environment. However, my target system is a Windows 2000 server. We installed SQL 2005 w/reporting services onto the Windows 2000 server. SQL2005 Database is up and running. Reporting Services are running, IIS RRS virtual directories are built, RRS databases are built. I can do everything except deploy reports from Business Intelligent Studio. I can preview reports, just cannot deploy. The Reporting Services indicate 1 failure in its configuration; the Web Service Identity. It is loaded with <server>ASPNET. I cannot get rid of this error. I assume this is the problem. After digging around I found that Windows 2000 does not have an ASPNET user, it uses the IWAM user instead. Reporting services did not run at all till I changed the rs config file and put the IWAM user in as <WebServiceAccount>.
Does anyone have Reporting services 2005 running on Windows 2000 server? Anyone know how to fix the Web Service Identity error I am getting?
I have downloaded SQL Server 2005 express from microsoft's site and tried to install in windows 2000 service pack 4 but having an unexpected error. The screenshot and log file is attached. Please suggest.
The error log is as shown:

Hi all,I just asked some people to help me out and phone microsoft with thefollowing information, kindly they refused unless we setup a supportcontract with them first, for pre-sales information. (That really doesnot sound like good business sense to me - anyway here is our problem,if anyone could help thanks)."To tell and ask microsoft:We will be setting up a microsoft sql server 2000 instance running on awindows 2003 server.1) We need to check this can run alongside a microsoft 2003 sql server(either workgroup or standard edition), on the same machine. Are thereany .dll clashes if we do this? If there are can we run SQL Server2000, in a virtual machine running windows 2000 professional. (I have alicenced copy we can use for this).2) If we run one instance of 2000, and one of 2003 of the sql servers, can one use the processor licence model, and one use the CAL licencemodel."Thanks for any help, and any idea why they actually force you to usenews groups for pre-sales information?David
Where can I further educate myself on this subject?
Right off from the start I would assume that installing SQL Server 2000 or 2005 on Windows Server 2003 that is set up as a web server hosting a website would be against "best practices." Is my assumption right?
Common sense tells me to not to host a website on a pc that is also hosting my database.
I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.
I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???
Thank you all,

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?
I have a pc running as an SQL Server 2005 express server. Last week, the RAID 1 array failed for some reason, both HD still work correctly and the raid utility simply mirrored everything back.
So after starting this pc the day after, SQL server stopped working. This is the error log:

I have been reading in this forum and other places, but I've had no luck fixing this. I already backed up all the mdf database files and logs just in case. The mssqlsystemresource database and logs are in the same location, and they have read/write access.
I want to start to use SQL Server 200 Express but have no idea where to enter the SQL queries and view the results.
I installed SQL Express and under Start > Programs > SQL Server 2005 I only have Configuration Tools which has Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and Surface Area Configuration.
SQL Server and SQL Server Browser Services are running but I have no clue of from to start creating my database, tables, etc etc.
I have a background of MySQL and used MySQL's command line tool and phpMyAdmin, so SQL is not a problem.
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.
This is my installation Information

I have SQL Server Manager 8.00.2039 installed because I have one program(app) installed that requires it be installed. For the first littlewhile when I had SQL server installed it would only show up in thetaskmanager tray, now MOST of the time, it shows up as a popup on mydesktop and also in my task tray when I first start XP (SP2). It staysthere until I close it. Is there a way to prevent the SQL from poppingup? Thanks
I am running windows 2003 and sql server 2005. i am following the directions in books online:
On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
In SQL Server Configuration Manager, expand Services, and then click SQL Agent.
In the results pane, right-click any instance, and then click Start.
A green arrow on the icon next to the SQL Server Agent and on the toolbar indicates that SQL Server Agent started successfully.
Click OK.
the problem is i have nothing in Services. there is nothing to expand. is it installed wrong?? or is there another step before this that i have to do??
Hi, Just upgraded some development desktops to Vista Business. However we need to still connect to some older remote windows 2000/SQL 2000 servers.
Trying to setup an ODBC system DSN on our Vista Business local desktop we get the following errors -
-START ERROR WINDOW- Connection Failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 772 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (SECDoClientHandshake()0. Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 18 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SSL Security Error -END ERROR WINDOW-
Any help greatly appreciated as this is stopping us from making database/table connections etc. We've checked the firewall setup and all is well there.
PS - we can still connect fine using XP or windows 2000 desktops and their local DSNs.
Hey. I've a script which gets the SQL usernames with the information I need. Is it possible to migrate the passwords also with this information?
Also, regarding Windows Logins, do i have to worry about their SIDS when migrating to SQL 2005. I'm going to attach SQL 2000 db's onto a 2005SQL instance and these db's alreayd have the usernames assigned in them. Please let me know if there is a way out for the above two questions. thank you.

I've just started getting this EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) on machines using Windows 2000 sp4 connecting to SQLServer. This is crashing JVMs (multiple Sun versions and BEA also) in the Java VM frame (outside our code). This has just started recently - perhaps with the last set of patches? Has anyone else seen this or know what I could do to get more information? Could this be related to updates to named pipes?

We have windows server 2000 and sql server 2005 on the same machine with 15 clients. There was a power failure. The sql server is automatically stopped. When we tried to start the service we are getting the error as action failed please check application event log for errors.
This has happened for the 2 times, kindly tell me why this happens and what precaution we can take and is there any setting we are missing. Since I am newbie to sql server and windows server I am unable to solve this problem.
We have a SQL Server 7.0 system in NT 4.0 environment. We upgraded our users to Access 2000 and started to work with this. Now we installed a new server which is Windows 2000 based and the domain is different from the SQL servers domain. We then installed Access 2000 on Windows 2000 to use with terminal server. But I noticed that there was a problem with the program. I then looked at the program which was written on Access 2000 and saw that the tables and views can't be seen. The program runs but I can't see the views and tables. Another thing is access disconects from SQL Server when I want to see the tables. So what can be the problem.
In one part there is an Access 2000 on Windows 2000 server. On the other part SQL Server 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0. And Access can't see the tables in SQL server.
I am trying to install microsoft sql server 2000 enterprise edition on a windows 2000 advance server. I keep getting error message

I upgraded my SQL 2005 Workgroup 2005 to SP2 and subsequently could not get the SQL Server service running. Turns out this was a problem because I had created separate folders for my data and log files. The distmdl.mdf and mssqlsystemresource.mdf files were in my data folder and distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were in my log folder. During SP2 upgrade a new distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were created in my data folder. I deleted the distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf files in my log folder and then moved the newly created ones in my data folder into the log folder and all is well now.
