SQL Server 2005 - Previous Engine Connections Get Lost?
Nov 15, 2006
Hi there,
I just upgraded from SQL2000 to 2005 and noticed that any DB engines you register do not get re-registerd when you restart the Management Studio, you have to reconnect every time you start Management Studio! SQL2000 used to keep your server connections.
Am i missing something or is this just how it works now!?
Thanks
Ben

We have an application running on SQL server. This application restores DB very frequently using Single user mode. Following are the SQLs that are executed to restore the database in single user mode and to get the database back in multi user mode.
alter database [test-db] set single_user with rollback immediate; --This sql is run using test-db
use master;restore database [test-db] from database_snapshot = 'snapshot_test-db';
alter database [test-db] set multi_user;
After switching the test-db to single user mode some 4-5 background processes of Taskmanager jump in for the test-db kicking off the session that application has taken over in single user mode . These background process are deadlocked between them selves.
Please refer to the output of sp_who2 below at link [URL] .... and following is the deadlock XML.
NOTE: SPIDs in deadlock XML may differ from the output of sp_who2 as spids keeps on changing for these processes.
<deadlock-list>
<deadlock victim="process4bbfc78">
<process-list>
<process id="process4bbfc78" taskpriority="0" logused="10000" waitresource="DATABASE: 5 " waittime="705"
[Code] ....
On searching for this problem I found out that people have faced similar problem but I was unable to find out the root cause and debug steps for this problem. Stopping the SQL server is provided as a solution to kick out these background processes but this is not a feasible in our case as code to restore DB runs very frequently resulting in this problem at a good frequency.
I also made sure that SQL Server Agent is not running. The SQL services running on server are SQL server, SQL Server Browser and SQL Server VSS Writer.

The option:
SQL Server Configuration Manager>SQL Server Network Configuration>Protocol for SQL_xxx (right click)>Properties, we can see two Tabs:
Tab 1: Flags
Tab 2: Certificate
If I set the value of Hide Instance= Yes, does "Force Enctyption", need to be set YES as well?
Or Force Enctyption has to be enabled in order to hide instance?
What is the recommend settings?

I have an auto exec stored procedure that needs to complete successfully or:
- the server should shutdown, or
- disable remote connections
Officially I cannot issue a Shutdown from a Stored Procedure. In addition, I can't see how to programatically disable remote connections.

In SQL Server Management Studio, it is possible to do the following:
a) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it X.
b) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to X, in the right-hand pane.
c) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it Y.
d) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to Y, in the right-hand pane.
e) Close the connection to X, which was created in step (a), from within Object Explorer.
In the right-hand pane, I am now left with a bunch of queries connected to X, and a similar bunch of queries connected to Y. Any quick way to shut all the queries connected to X, but none of the queries connected to Y?
This question can assume real practical importance if server X is a Live Production Server, and server Y is a Test Server, and my next job of the day is to run a change script against server Y....
I have looked for an option in Management Studio to "Close all queries connected to Server X", but haven't found one.

Dear Forum,
our goal is to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1. So far we used to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition which resulted in the Version 9.00.1399 (basic run time machine).
We noticed that SP1 is almost the same sice as the basic run time machine. Still, we then we applied SP1. during the installation, at the window "Existing Components", the "SQL Server Database Services 9.00.1399.06 is listed with a check box. When I tick the box, the installation can continue. SP1 resulted in the version 9.00.2047. (checked on sqlservr.exe).
my question: can we install directly SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 without any previous SQL Server installation at all to save installation time (and errors)?
I do now that the service packs are considered "cumulative", so SP2 includes SP1, but I do not know of SP1 includes the basice runtime machine.
thanks for your answers

Hello,
Is it possible to determine the maximum number of connections permitted by a database? Is this value configurable? How do I figure out the maximum number of allowed connections on a SQL Server 2005 db?
Thank you,

Hello ,
The problem is that we are having Problem while making the remote Connection to the Sql Server 2005
Basically We are having a problem connecting to SQL2005 through a package remotely. when we try to connect to a remote data base, we get the following error
[Connection manager "CRA LRRS Development DB"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Although by running the configuration manager on the Remote DataBase System we have enable the Remote Connections through name and IP both but still it cant access it.
Please tell us the possible consequences and provide us the feedback.
I will be really obliged if any of you can provide us the feedback on it as soon as possible.

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 I am supposed to:
1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Hi there! I've been trying for several days now to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remote connections, apparently, with no luck.
I always have this error message: Microsoft SQL Native Client: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
I've followed the instructions at this link -> http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=914277&SD=tech, but I have been having the same problems.
I've already adjusted my firewall settings.
What should I do?
Please help me...

string connectionString = "server='localhost'; user id='sa'; password=''; Database='Northwind'";
When I executed the code I have the following error message:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)."
The Microsoft Access was successfully connected in the Server Explorer window.
How do I solve this problem?
Thanks,

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL

Hi Guys, how many connections does sql 2005 express allow to .mdf file. I stumpled on info on a microsoft site (actually a forum post on msdn) that sql server express allows only a single connection to an .mdf file.
Iam intrested in this because i developed reporting services reports in BIS and iam having problems. If i run a report from report manager, i have to wait for close to 20 minutes before i can be able to run my asp.net application agian. Else if i insert data or retrieve data from my asp.net application, then i have to wait again for 20 minutes or more before i can be able to run my reports else i will get an error that a connection can not be made to the database or that the database is being used by another process.
So in all cases, i have to wait for 20--30 minutes before a connection can be made to the .mdf file. i.e after running a report or after inserting or retrieving data from the database through my asp.net application.
Iam using sql sever 2005 express with advanced services and visual web developer on windows server 2003.
Any ideas or help.

I've developed an asp.net 2.0 web app with vs 2005 and am using a SQL Server 2005 Express database. The app works fine locally, but after uploading to the remote web server the following error occures:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
How do I go about granting remote connections to SQL Server Express?
Does the web server have to have SQL Server Express installed in order to run apps that utilize SQL Server 2005 Express databases?
Do I grant access locally on my machine or do I have to be on the web server to grant remote connections?
I've been using .net 1.1 with access databases for the past couple of years, so this is all new to me.
Thanks.

Hello. I have SQLEXPRESS 2005 installed on my laptop running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have an application that can connect to the local instance with no problem. The other day, I tried to configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 for a remote connection from my desktop. To date, I have been unable to figure out how to do this.
I have followed the instructions posted at various locations on the internet, but to no avail. While I can configure SQLEXPRESS 2005 to allow TCP/IP connections, I have been unable to restart the server.
Here is the pertinent snippet from the error log:
<time> Server A self-generated certificate was successfully loaded for encryption.
<time> Server Error: 26024, Severity: 16, State: 1.

<time> Server Error: 17182, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x277a, status code 0x1.
<time> Server Error: 17826, Severity: 18, State: 3.
<time> Server Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately preceding this one in the error log.
<time> Server Error: 17120, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<time> Server SQL Server could not spawn FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.
I have a feeling this problem is due to the way my system is configured, not necessarily how my SQLEXPRESS 2005 is configured. My laptop and desktop are connected via a wireless router, and both machines are running Norton Anti-Virus 2006. I've added sqlserver.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to the exceptions list for the Worm protection on the laptop, i.e., the server machine. There's not a setting at the router that would prevent the server from re-starting, is there?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

THOUGHTS
Possibly a bad connection string or Microsoft security issue.
I've attempted many other connection string formats such as:
Dim conn As SqlConnection = new SqlConnection("Data Source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,1433;
Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=Server01Test; User ID=sa; Password=xxx")
But I continue to receive connection failure messages (or invalid connection string errors for incorrectly formed connection strings).
I've tried disabling RRAS and Windows Firewall and the same errors resulted.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2005 SP2 (build 3054)Consider the following scenario:- A complex multi-statement table valued function is created. Let's callit dbo.tfFunc(@Param1, @Param2)- A SELECT statement is executed, that calls the above function twice, each time with a different set of parameters. In pseudocode:SELECT <column list>FROM dbo.tfFunc(1, 2) AS f1<some JOIN operatordbo.tfFunc(3, 4) AS f2ON f1.col = f2.colINNER JOIN dbo.Table1 AS t1ON ...etc.The exact statement is probably irrelevant, as long as the same table-valued function is called twice (I have observed the issue in two verydifferent statements calling the same function). The statement isexecuted in a SNAPSHOT isolation level transaction, although this mayalso be irrelevant.- The statement continues executing for a long time. If sp_who2 is run atthat time, the following row is returned for the statement connection(only relevant columns are shown):SPIDStatusBlkByCommandCPUTimeDiskIOLastBatch63 SUSPENDED63SELECT2928268308/31 18:17:37The statement appears to be blocked by itself. If sp_lock is run at thattime, the following rows are returned:spiddbidObjIdIndIdTypeResourceModeStatus63213166246410TABSch-SGRANT63213166246410TABSch-MWAITIt appears that SQL Server waits indefinitely trying to obtain a schema-modification lock on a resource which already has a schema-stability lockplaced on it by the same connection. The following is pure speculation, but it seems reasonable to assume thatthe server has materialized the result of the first call to the functionusing a temporary table in tempdb, and is trying to materialize theresult of the second call using the same temporary table (same ObjId insp_lock results).I do not know why this does not cause a deadlock error.Unfortunately, I do not have a simple repro script for this. The actualcode is rather complex. While I can devise a workaround, this does looklike a bug. I am posting it here before submitting a bug on Connect, incase anyone can shed some light. Hi,I have SQL Server Express Edition. I tried working out some ASP.NET Labs in my local system. Here is the link of the Virtual Lab which I tried. http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/WebCastEventDetails.aspx?EventID=1032286906&EventCategory=3&culture=en-US&CountryCode=USI recieve this error in my local system. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)I tried working out solutions from various websites. But the no solution is effective. Could anyone help me in solving this issue.

After applying the changes mentioned in KB 914277 to allow remote connections, while working in Visual Studio 2005, I'm now getting an error with the number 26: Error locating server/Instance specified...
Sure wish I knew what remote means in this scenario, as there is nothing "remote" about my installation. I only have 1 computer, the one i'm working on, where SQL Server and Visual Studio are installed, and no networks involved, so what is remote?
Any help would be appreciated!!

I have a problem. I am using the developers version of SQL Server Enterprise edition.
I am trying to run a command in MS command prompt:
Aspnet_regsql -E -S localhost -ssadd -sstype p
After I execute this command, I receive a Name Pipe
error that under the default settings, SQL Server
doesn't allow remote connections. I took some steps
to try to resolve the problem:
1) I googled the interrnet to see if there was any one
else who ran into the same problem and if there was a
quick resolution.
2) I check SQL Server Books on line about SQL server
configuration manager and how to enable remote
connections using Name Pipes and TCP/IP.
3) I used C:WINDOWSsystem32cliconfg.exe to enable
Name Pipes and TCPIP to be enable on the client.
4) I enabled SQl Server Browser to help me with my
problem
5) I stopped the Database engine, enable local and
remote connections using Name pipes and TCP/IP,then I
restarted the database engine along with SQl server
Agent.
6) I did check SQl Server error logs to see what port
it was listening on , but I thought that SQl Server
was suppose to listen on port 1433 by default, and
Name pipes /SQL/query.
7)I have check the error logs to see what port that SQL Server was listening to
and trying to use the port number in the client config utility. I am still getting the same error.
8) I tried to remove name pipes in the SQL Server Surface Manager and allow local and remote connections using only TCP/IP. I still get the same error. I did stop and restarted the Database Engine.
What steps have I not taken , and what should I do to correct this problem?
