Jun 3, 2015I inherited a system which has an index on a set of columns which allow more than 900 bytes of data in it. We know one of the fields can be shortened to shrink the potential key size below 900 bytes.
The problem is the table is about 120m rows, and the index currently on that column is seeked (sought?) on about 2.5m times a day.
At its simplest, I want to drop the existing index, alter the column to shrink the varchar size, and then rebuild the index on the newly shortened column.
On a smaller, less used table, I might just do this in outside of business hours and call it a day, but I'm concerned that this will take a long time and block a lot of operations.
1) IIRC, shrinking a column, unlike widening it, is much more expensive, even if there are no values which would actually end up trunacted. Is this right?
2) I did a few tests on some other smaller (2+ m) row tables and was still able to select data out of the table. I don't think this covered all the read scenarios, but are there known scenarios which would simply not work during an index build?
3) I haven't yet tried DML operations to the table while it's doing either the column update or an index build. what scenarios would or would not be blocked?

Jul 24, 2015I'm inserting from TempAccrual to VacationAccrual . It works nicely, however if I run this script again it will insert the same values again in VacationAccrual. How do I block that? IF there is a small change in one of the column in TempAccrual then allow insert. Here is my query

I need to update the data1, data2 from yesterday or before but they should be non blank and non null and update to todays data.
It means, I can't update to 2015-03-12 values to 2015-03-13, as they are blanks or nulls.
So I need to go 2015-03-11 and check the values, if they are not blank , i need to update with todays values.

Sep 16, 2015I have a scenario where I have to Update a table with date when there are new records in another table
For example:
I load ODS table with the data from a file in SSIS. the file has CustomerID and other columns.
Now, when there is new record for any customerID in Ods, then Update the dbo table with the most recent record for every CustomerID(i.e. update the date column in dbo for that customerID). Also Include an Identifier that relates back to the ODS table. How do I do this?

while inserting in column Day_No in RPT_Invoice_Shipped table, I have to use formula (Transaction_Date-start_date+1) where Transaction_Date from STG_Shipped_Invoiced and start_date from Cal_date table. I was using datepart (mm, Transaction_Date) so it gives month_no, and this month_no we can join with month_no of Cal_date table and fetch start_date from Cal_date table, so that we can use start_date for formula (Transaction_Date-start_date+1).
But I am getting difficulty to arrange this in above query. how to achieve this?

FOREIGN KEY(ID) REFERENCES student(ID)

For the length of Column ID is not enough, So I want to alter its length.The alter statement is:
ALTER TABLE student ALTER COLUMN ID CHAR(20)
For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?

They want to hold 13 months of data in the table and roll off the earliest/oldest month to an identical archive table. The table has a date field and partitioning by month makes sense all around.
So SWITCH PARTITION is the obvious solution to this, except for the fact that the table is replicated (transactional w/no subscriber updates).
What are his architectural or practical solutions to using table partitioning and replication?

If a table needs a number of update triggers which do differing tasks, should these triggers be separated out or encapsulated into one all encompassing trigger. Speaking in terms of performance, it doesn€™t make much of an improvement doing either depending upon the tasks performed. I was wondering in terms of maintenance and best practice etc. My view is that if the triggers do totally differing tasks they should be a trigger each on their own.

Bug: ALTER TABLE *** WITH NOCHECK Does Not Work For SQL Server 2005
May 11, 2006I wanted to turn off 'Enforce Foreign Key Constrain' using SQL. However, it did not work on the SQL Server 2005 database.
For example, running following SQL in Management Studio, and the result showed that 'Enforce Foreign Key Constrain' property for the newly created constraint was still enabled.
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Tags] WITH NOCHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Tags_ChannelID] FOREIGN KEY([ChannelID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[Channels] ([ID])
Does anybody know any way to get around with this problem. It is quite important for my software.
Ps. with the SP1, problem remains the same.
SQL Server 2014 :: Alter Table Add 2 Fields Takes Too Long
Sep 25, 2015We have a proc that adds some fields to a few tables of ours and normally there are no issues. For one of our client databases this process is taking anywhere from 5-10 minutes to add the fields. This causes an issue where the app will timeout waiting. After plugging around and looking at the proc and trying different items i found it to only be for this one database and ONLY when there is data in the table. If i truncate the table and run the same procedure everything is fine. Tables all have same index on 4 columns and the columns being added are not indexed because of the stupid hoops we have to jump thru to pre-pivot data for our reporting package.

I only want values "Yes", "No" or "" in many of my fields, which I store in a column named "YesNoBlank" in another table.Does anyone know the easy way to do this? / Syntax for the trigger?

Now tried to change the filegrowth of the log file to unlimited

MODIFY FILE ( NAME = Client01_log, MAXSIZE = unlimited);
The query executes without error but I do not see the auto growth as unrestricted. It's still 2GB

I can assign that user db_datareader role, grant view definition but if I grant alter permission, that user can create, alter and drop any stored procedure and view.
