Auto-incremented Column

Dec 6, 2006

Hello,
I have a column that is not auto-incremented. I would like to make it auto-incremented. For the moment, the only solution I found is to delete my column and to add a new auto-incremented column. The problem is I cannot delete it without deleting dependencies on it... So is there a solution to make an existing column auto-incremented or is it necessary to a create a new column ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Auto-incremented Fields Error

Aug 29, 2007

I am trying to insert into a SQL Server table from an Oracle database. This table has an auto-incremented field, and when I try to insert into this table I get the following error:

Code Snippet
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot insert the value NULL
into column '<column_name>', table '<my_table>'; column does not allow nulls.
UPDATE fails.[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The statement has
been terminated. (SQL State: 23000; SQL Code: 515)

When I turn off all the triggers in the database, I don't get this error. But that is just a test environment, the production environment will need to have those triggers activated.

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Thanks.

Padding An Auto-incremented Int Column To Ten Zeros

May 11, 2004

Good day gentleman,
Is it possible to pad columns of Int data type with zeros?

I currently have a primary key column of data type Int which is auto-incremented by 1. My problem is I need to pad the auto-incremented ID's with ten zeros so, 0000000009 instead of 9.

I can pad the ID's in the c# dataaccess layer, but i need to generate/store them padded in the database to allow direct reporting.

I am using Enterprise Manager and i can see a Formula field when the table is in design view, can i use this? i am just guessing here.

Any comments or pointers would be a big help.

SQL Server 2012 :: Adding A Number To A String To Create Series

Sep 3, 2014

add a number to the end of an ID to create a series. For example, I have an EventID that may have many sub events. If the EventID is 31206, and I want to have subEvents, I would like have the following sequence. In this case, lets say I have 4 sub Events so I want to check the EventID and then produce:

312061
312062
312063
312064

How can I check what the EventID is, then concatenate a sequence number by the EventID?

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Temporarily Block A Table From User Access

Feb 10, 2015

I need to run a script in production that adds primary key to a table. Because table is large, I can't run it in one shot, the log file is not so large to accommodate it. Instead, I created a new table with same structure plus new surrogate primary key, and I populate it in a cursor loop.

I already ran it many times in test server, and no problems with that. But the problem will be in production when applications will be accessing this table and try to insert/update it while I am running my loop.

So I am looking for a solution how to block users to access this table, it's OK if they receive an error. Setting database to single user mode will not work because I don't want to block them from all the rest tables in this database.

Auto Incremented Integer Primary Keys Vs Varchar Primary Keys

Aug 13, 2007

Hi,

I have recently been looking at a database and wondered if anyone can tell me what the advantages are supporting a unique collumn, which can essentially be seen as the primary key, with an identity seed integer primary key.

For example:

id [unique integer auto incremented primary key - not null],
ClientCode [unique index varchar - not null],
name [varchar null],
surname [varchar null]

isn't it just better to use ClientCode as the primary key straight of because when one references the above table, it can be done easier with the ClientCode since you dont have to do a lookup on the ClientCode everytime.

Regards
Mike

Trying To Get A Series Of Number To Go By Months

Jul 12, 2007

if

(datalength

(cast_varchar

([Costpoint].[Profit_Calc_Consolidation].[PD])

) = 1)

then

(0 ||

cast_varchar

([Costpoint].[Profit_Calc_Consolidation].[PD]))

else

(cast_varchar

([Costpoint].[Profit_Calc_Consolidation].[PD]))

Goal:

To be able to tell the Period number ([PD]) to change from an integer to a var_char so that it can be concatenated with the Fiscal Year. I.e. Fiscal Year || Period number to produce the following results.

2006 01

2006 02

2006 03

Etc……

Status of Problem:

The issue is that I can only get it done to the point to where the Fiscal Year || Period number yields the following results:

20061

200610

200611

200612

20062

Etc….

This is as issue since I am trying to get all the information from the past to a certain year and period. Using a filter that says

Fiscal Year + Period Number <= ?Prompt_Fiscal_Year? + ?Prompt_Period_Number?

So if I enter Year: 2007 Period 3

I should get:

2006 01

2006 02

2006 03

Etc…….

2006 11

2006 12

2007 01

2007 02

2007 03

Can you please let me know if my thinking is off or if my SQL is wrong, Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Design Best Practices On Series Number

May 8, 2006

Hi,

I need to design a table header for inventory transactions with the specifications as follows:

1. System-generated series numbers (integer)

2. Series numbers must be unique by branch by transaction type. Thus if I have following:

Branches: Br1, Br2

Transaction Type: SRS (Stock Receipt from Supplier), SRB(.. from Branch)

The series number must be implemented in such a way that,

Br1 SRS 0000000001

Br1 SRB 0000000001

Br2 SRS 0000000001

Br2 SRB 0000000001

Then, in every INSERT, series number should be incremented by 1, grouped by branch by transaction type. That is, after INSERT with Br1/SRB the figure may now look like,

Br1 SRS 0000000001

Br1 SRB 0000000002

How do I design my table in order to achieve this? Note that this table header will have a detail (master/detail) referenced by foreign key.

Thanks in advance.

Time Series: Number Of Previous Values Used In Model

Nov 8, 2006

As the Microsoft Time Series algorithm implementation is based upon the Autoregressive Tree approach described in:

C. Meek, D. M. Chickering, D. Heckerman. Autoregressive Tree Models for Time-Series Analysis. In Proc. 2nd Intl. SIAM Conf. on Data Mining, 2002 (SDM-02). SIAM, pp. 229 €“ 244. http://www.siam.org/meetings/sdm02/proceedings/sdm02-14.pdf.

The model estimated is refererred to as an instance of "... autoregressive tree models of length p, denoted ART(p). An ART(p) model is an ART model in which each leaf node of the decision tree contains an AR(p) model, and the split variables for the decision tree are chosen from among the previous p variables in the time series..." (see the last paragraph of p. 2 of the paper).

What is the value of "p" used in the Microsoft Time Series implementation -- specifically, how many previous time series variables are used in estimating the model? It doesn't appear that this value can be specified in the algorithm parameters -- is that correct?

Thanks,

- Paul

I need to create a partition of the data to join to another table, the query that i have:

SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY pf ORDER BY Data DESC, idAuxiliarPF DESC) AS RN,
pf,
Data,
Descr
FROM dbo.PFAuxiliar
WHERE Data <= GETDATE()This query takes around 40 seconds to return the results

If i remove the Descr column, the query it takes no time.

SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY pf ORDER BY Data DESC, idAuxiliarPF DESC) AS RN,
pf,
Data
FROM dbo.PFAuxiliar
WHERE Data <= GETDATE()I have two indexes, Clustered (idAuxiliarPF), NONClustered(pf).

How can i improve the performance of this query?

I have a new problem with doing a restore of a number of databases using powershell. The script I'm using is based mainly on this one (Part 2 in particular): [URL] .....

The problem I'm having is around the RedgateGetDatabaseName function. My hunch is that its down to the different version of red gate and how sqlbackup works. Basically when the call is made to the function it is returning both the Database Name and the number of row's that the SQL command in the function has ran. I've tried to include a SET NOCOUNT ON at the start of the SQL command in the function but its still returning the now count.

SQL Server 2008 :: Append Records With Different Number Of Columns?

Feb 16, 2015

I have a table of Customers & their data in about 20 Columns.

I have another table that has potential Customers with 3 Columns.

I want to append the records from Table 2 onto Table 1 to the Columns with the same names.

I've thought of using UNION ALL or Select Insert but I'm mainly stuck on the most efficient way to do this.

There is also no related field that can be used to join the data as these Customers in table 2 have no Customer ID yet as they're only potential Customers.

Can I just append the 3 columns from Table 2 to the same 3 columns in table 1?

SQL Server 2008 :: Maximum Number Of Sessions Has Been Reached

Jun 29, 2015

We have a big software that run a warehouse distribution center, written in .NET Backhand is a SQL Server 2008 R2 STD database.

Now, it seems there is a problem with the sessions not being properly closed after each call to the DB. Here is the message got form SQL:

DESCRIPTION:A new connection was rejected because the maximum number of connections on session ID 57 has been reached. Close an existing connection on this session and retry.

In the .NET code, connection is made with the following code:

If oConn Is Nothing Then oConn = New SqlConnection
If oConn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then oConn.Close()
With oConn
.ConnectionString = "Server=" & Server & ";Database=" & DB & ";User ID=" & User & ";Password=" & Pass & ";Connection Timeout=" & 5 & ";MultipleActiveResultSets=" & True
.Open()
End With

This code is called once, at the opening of the software

StoredProc are call with the code:
Try
oCmd = New SqlCommand
With oCmd
.Connection = oConn
.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

[Code] .....

So every Command is closed after execution, yet, they stay active in the SQL Server. Is there something I'm missing here?

SQL Server 2008 :: Update The Document Number Row For 3k Rows?

Aug 4, 2015

I have a table where I would like to update the document number row for 3k rows. The problem I have is that the documents come in sets of two (version 1 and 2) but both have different numbers. Picture it like this below:

DOCNUM: 4445787 Version 1
DOCNUM: 4445790 Version 2

It should be the same docnum (ie 4445787 Version 1, 4445787 Version 2).

The challenge is how can we assign the new docnum for version 1 to be also for version 2 as well. Basically in SQL we need a way to

1. Find a way to distinguish the pair of documents in the target db that are the same even though they have different docnums.

2. Update them so that the docnums match.
