I received alerts from a couple of the production servers last night stating that the log file is running out of space. So, I took some log backups and shrunk those files. However, I would like to find out what made the log grow like that. After all, I have t-log backups scheduled every 30 minutes. Is there a way I can find out the reason behind the log growth?

SQL Server 2008 :: Virtual Log Files And Determining Right Growth Size

Oct 14, 2015

Any good starting point to understand for a specific db, how many max VLFs are good to have so that it does not cause long startup or backup times?

Also, I need some calculation so that I can identify a best growth parameter I will setup for each database ?

I'm seeing the below msg in errorlog and curious to know the changes (right sizing/growth) to be done? As of now 100 MB of log file growth value is set (refer: [URL] ....)

Database BizTalkMsgBoxDb has more than 1000 virtual log files which is excessive. Too many virtual log files can cause long startup and backup times. Consider shrinking the log and using a different growth increment to reduce the number of virtual log files.

Can't Change The Auto Growth Option On My Database

Aug 3, 2007

I'm currently using SQL Server 2005. Before I have set my database on unrestricted auto growth. But today, I have noticed that the Log file has been set to limit its growth to 2,097,152 MB. I have 160GB space for my log files, I just want to maximize the space for logs in my hard drive.

When I try to change the settings back to auto growth it still keeps on returning to its previous setting it is still set on 2,097,152 MB. What I did was :
Right Click on the Database - Properties - Files - Click the (...) - set the auto growth option to unrestricted - Click Ok
But when I checked log file, it is still set on 2,097,152MB.

Can some one help me change the settings of my Database.

Script Which Checks When Running Out Of Auto-growth Extents?

Feb 24, 2015

I'm looking for hints/tips/url for a script which can be run a few times per day and either sends an email or alert for the following condition:

Script would function like:

[URL]

Databases - Dynamic Log File Growths Remaining Alarm

Dynamic Log File Growths Remaining alarm becomes active when a non fixed size log file in any database is in danger of running out of space to grow. It is raised when a log file is almost full and the file cannot automatically grow enough to relieve the problem.

We have our databases with Enable Autogrowth (in Megabytes), and then a Maximum File Size (Limited to a MB value).

Example: If one of the database logs (or possibly filegroup primary) picks up another extent and is about 5 extents (arbitrary value) away from running out of growth room, an alert would be sent to an email address/profile.

P.S. Yes, there are multiple databases on this one instance and the script should loop to run through all of them.

Reverting Back To Production Server After Standby

Jul 15, 2001

We need to perform some maintainence on our database server which may take quite some time. We have a standby server which we constantly apply logs to.
We are planning to recover the standby server and use it while the production server is being maintained.

My question is how to I get back to using the original production machine.
The only way I can think of is to do a full backup on the standby machine,
do some transaction log backup and then restore these on the original production machine.

Is there any way to use the full backup from the original production machine and well as logs from the standby machine. When I try this I get the message that the database has not been rolled forward far enough.

In summary:
1. Backup full database on Prod Server
2. Restore full database on Standby Server
3. Backup transaction log (1) from Prod Server
4. Restore transaction log (1) on Standby Server
5. Recover database on Standby Server
6. Make modifications on Standby Server
7. Backup transaction log (2) on Standby Server
8. Restore full database on Prod Server
9. Restore transaction log (1) on Prod Server
10. Attempt to restore transaction log (2) fails.

Proxy Auto-Configuration Url Not Found Error - But Not Using Proxy

May 15, 2007

I have read all the posts regarding this error, but non-solve my problem as I had already addressed them.

I am setting up Merge Replication via the Web and I get this error when i try to sync. Let me give you some background.

I wrote a small windows test app to test merge replication, in which i am using RMO to accomplish the replication. This works. It syncs every time. I then copied the "sync" code from the winform application and created a Windows Service in which i placed "sync" code. The sync code did not change other than adding the additional following four lines:

_mergeAgent.InternetUrl = _internetURL;

_mergeAgent.InternetLogin = _internetLogin;

_mergeAgent.InternetPassword = _internetPassword;

_mergeAgent.InternetTimeout = _internetTimout;

where the internet url is https://ipaddress/virtualdirectory/replisapi.dll

I have been working with this for a while now trying to figure out why this works (on the same machine) in a winforms app but not through the web (via a windows service).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

Haunted Database (reverting Procedures)

Dec 20, 2007

For the second time in two days, a completely rewritten procedure (using "alter procedure" statement) has reverted to an earlier version after hours of testing and confirmation. In both cases, there was 4-6 hours from successful final testing to discovery of the "reversion."

Since sql server has no memory of earlier procedure versions, I can only conclude:

1) someone restored an earlier version of the db (log says no)
2) someone acidentally ran a script for the old procedure (no evidence for that)
3) the database crashed and was rolled back as part of restore (but alter procedure is a ddl and, as such, is auto-commited so it cannot be rolled back)

None of these 3 possibilities seems to have occurred. Is there another possibility I'm missing?

Database Corrupted By Reverting To A Snapshot

Dec 28, 2006

The following list of actions leads to a corrupt database on SQL Server 2005.

Create a database snapshot
Drop a table in the database
Backup the database
Restore from backup
Revert to the snapshot

I'm not entirely surprised that it results in a corruption, what is surprising is that I can revert from a snapshot after restoring. There needs to be some kind of check to prevent reverting to a snapshot in a case like this. Until SQL Server prevents you from doing it, I'd recommend a best practice is to delete all snapshots before you restore a database so that you cannot do this by accident.

SQL Server 7.0 'File Growth' Algorithm

Nov 16, 2000

We are running SQL Server 7.0 SP2, and are experiencing the following out-of-
space error message:

"Could not allocate new page for database 'FooBar'.
There are no more pages available in filegroup SECONDARY.
Space can be created by dropping objects, adding additional files,
or allowing file growth."

Needless to say, but the the database is set for 10% unlimited autogrowth and there
IS available space in the partition where the filegroup resides.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? What is SQL Server's algorithm for allocating
space when growing a database? Must it satisfy the request in one 'extent' and the
cause of our problem is that our disk is fragmented?

Thanks in advance.

Are there any benchmarks specifically on setting datafile growth so low (on databases 1-100Gb in size)? Are there circumstances in well utilized servers where that might be warranted?
