SQL Server 2008 :: Bulk Import And Create New Table Based On Header Fields Of Imported File (XLXS)

Sep 11, 2015

I have a record in an Excel format (Excel 2010) and I would like to bulk import that into SQL Server 2008 and also while importing, SQL Server will automatically create a new table based on the header fields or row of the source file.

I am not sure if SQL Server 2008 has this capabilities.

Bulk Import With Header In Text File

Nov 28, 2005

I would appreciate some help on a procedure that I have. Using BulkInsert, I would like to import records from a text file. The issue Ihave is the file contains a header - '1AMC_TO_Axiz' and a footer'1AMC_TO_Axiz2". Using a format file, I can get the import to work byediting the file and removing these two entries. Is there a way tosetup the format file to skip these two entries? My file currentlylooks like this:7.0161 SQLCHAR 0 50 "|" 1 keyMemberNo2 SQLCHAR 0 10 "|" 2 fldEffdate.................16 SQLCHAR 0 10 "
" 16 fldNewRecordThanksCharles

Import Files Based On Whether They Have Already Been Imported Or If They Have Changed

Feb 9, 2008

Hi there,

Today I tried out Integration Services and after a couple of hours of confusion I am impressed by the power of this product. I was wondering if I might get some help on the 'best practice' for the following requirements:

I have a foreach container that scans a directory and calls a data flow task for each file in the directory. The files import to the database fine, but I want to modify the procedure so it only imports files that have not yet been imported. There are a couple of scenarios:

- a file is created in the directory
- a file is modified in the directory

In both cases I want to insert (or reinsert) the file. How can I modify my package to accomodate this behaviour? Storing the filename is an option, but I am not sure how to also bring in the file creation/modified dates.

Is this the right approach?

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Alex

SQL Server 2008 :: Can Bulk Insert Only Desired Column From A Flat File To Table

Mar 18, 2015

Can we bulk insert only the desired column from a flat file to a table?

I am using SSIS to bulk insert from a file with more than 200 columns. I am trying to find a way I can bulk insert them to multiples table through SSIS.

The one way I can think is pre map the columns from the file to the destination tables. Build numerous Bulk Insert tasks to achieve that. But not sure if SSIS will let me do that.

How To Create Table On Text File Import?

Sep 27, 2007

Hey guys,
I have a dilemma and hope someone can help.

I don't know of any utilities or commands in SQL that do this but I hope someone does.

What I need to do is something like a bcp import a text file in. I can do that with DTS as well. But what I wanted to do is create a table on the import. So lets say, I am importing a tab-delimited file with column names as the first row that is called ax.txt. On import, it would create the table ax with the column names in the file and then import the data into that table.

I hope I explained it clearly. Please let me know if there is anything I can use to do this without writing lots of code.

I have an idea how to do it the long way but hope there is a utility that already does it.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2008 :: Bulk Insert Data Into Table

Mar 23, 2015

I want to bulk insert data into a table named scd_event_tab inside a database named rdb.

When I do select * from rdb.dbo.scd_event_tab, i get :

JOB_ID RUN_ONPRIORITYPAYLOADTIMEOUT_INTERVALSTATUSPICKUP_TIMESCD_TYPESCHEDULE_IDDB_ADMIN_LOGIN_REQUIRED_YN

I saved the result into a csv file and then truncated the table. Now, I am trying to bulk insert the data into the table. So I used:

bulk insert
rdb.dbo.scd_event_tab from 'C:userssluintel.ctrdesktopeventtab.csv'
with
(
codepage = 'RAW',
datafiletype = 'native',
fieldterminator = ' ',
keepidentity,
keepnulls
);
go

However, I get this error:

Msg 4867, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (overflow) for row 1, column 1 (JOB_ID).
Msg 4866, Level 16, State 5, Line 1

The bulk load failed. The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 3. Verify that the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

SQL Server 2008 :: Percentage Of Fields Used In A Table - Query?

Oct 28, 2015

I have tableX with columns colA, colB, colC, colD and there are 2256 rows in the tableX.

I would like to find out the percentages of colA, colB, colC, colD that hold data (where it is not an empty string or NULL value).

So out of 2256 rows in the table, the user has stored data in colA 1987 times, colB 2250 times, colC 2256 times and colD 17 times.

So the report would say:

colA: 88.07%
colB: 99.73%
colC: 100%
colD: 0.01%

We have an application that has a bunch of fields that we believe are not being used and would like to remove them, but we need to prove this by looking at the data.

I know I could run a query, one at a time and change the column name, but this would take a long time as there are a lot of columns in this table. I am hoping there is some way to do this in one query.

Header Rows To Skip On Flat File Import/Export

Aug 29, 2006

Just attempting to import a simple tab delimited text file into my SQL Server 2005 database using the SQL Server Import and Export wizard. Column names are specified within the first line of the file. The Header Rows to Skip field value is listed as 0, but the wizard indicates that "The field, Header rows to skip, does not contain a valid numeric value".

Why isn't zero (0) a valid numeric value? I don't want to skip any rows. PLUS, I get the same error when trying to export to a text file although the header rows to skip field does not exist. I can increase the number to 1 or more, but the wizard will skip part of my data .. unacceptable.

What am I missing here? I installed SP1 of SQL server 2005, but that did not help.

Thanks in advance.

Peter                Jason            5/23/2015         123.02

I want the results to be in following way

Uniq ID    Last Name    First Name          DATE         Total-Chrg

1                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     -4150.66
2                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     1043.66
2                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     1043.66
3                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015      4150.66
4               Jaime             KRiSH                 5/3/2015      4150.66
5               Peter              Jason                5/1/2015       321.02
6               Peter              Jason                5/1/2015       321.02
7               Peter              Jason               5/23/2015     123.02

May be we may do by dense_rank or Row_Number, but I couldn't get the exact query to produce based on the above table values.  There are some duplicates in the table(which are not duplicates as per the Business). For those duplicated Unique ID should be same(Marked in Orange Color which are duplicates).

Bulk Insert, Bcp For Import Log File In Sql

Mar 11, 2008

i have a log file, i am trying to import data from it to SQL in order to analyze the data (able to query on the data), however that task seems impossible.
In fact the log file contains a varying number of column fields (error logged, various types of data logged demand varying number of columns). More than that the fields themself are hard to extract.

An example of data in my log is:xxxxxxxx is some alphanumeric chars2008-01-09 20:16:05,4784E36F.req,10.1.1.26,xxxxxxxxx,OK -- SMPP - xxxxxxx:xxxxx,Sender=xxxx;SMSCMsgId=2028eecc;Binary=1;DCS=8;Data=xxxxxxxxxxxxxx...2008-01-09 20:16:05,4784E338.req,10.1.1.26,xxxxxxxx,Retry Pending - ERROR: Timeout waiting for response from server or lost connection -- SMPP - xxxxxxxxxxx:xxxxx,Sender=xxxxx........

I may use regular expressions to extract the data, and maybe use a regular INSERT to put in the right table. Thus it seems like making a manual Bulk Insert(yeah and it may take much more time), it seems strange, can i use somehow some additional tool (in SQL package or external), to assist somehow.

Thanks and sorry if this is double posted !

Count Rows Imported By Bulk Insert

Jul 13, 2006

I have a stored procedure which will run automatically. I've got try...catch code in the procedure, but I found a bug with the code where if there are any import errors, it doesn't recognize that that there was an error and it runs through the try code as through there was no problems. (I reported the bug).
I added some code using @@rowcount to check if there were rows imported, and if not, it moves the data file to a error folder so I know there was a problem with the import. But this only checks if at least one row was imported, not if all the rows in the datafile have been imported. (i.e. if the first row imported correctly, and the second did not, it still sees it as successful).
The problem is some of the data files have only one row to import and some have multiple rows. Is there a way to count the number of rows in the datafile, then count the number of rows imported, to verify they are the same number imported?
Thanks,
Laura

How To Create A File With Header, Details & Footer

Aug 31, 2006

Hi All,

HH20060831160342
DDasb IT 3000
FF20060831160709000000001

Where 'HH' is the header(followed by Date and time) and 'FF' is the footer (followed by Date, time and no of records)and 'DD' has some details (few fields) from database.I am using UNION to get this result but the problem is that if the count in the footer is 0 then query should not give any output.but If I am using the following query
select 'HH'+convert(varchar,getDATE(),112)+replace(convert(varchar,getdate(),8),':','') as filename,'' as name,'' as dept,'' as sal
union all
select 'DD'+'',filename, dept, sal from emp where empno like '%1%'
union all
select 'FF'+convert(varchar,getDATE(),112)+replace(convert(varchar,getdate(),8),':','')+ REPLICATE(0, 9-len(COUNT(*)))+''+convert(VARchar(10),COUNT(*)) as filename,'' as name,'' as dept,'' as sal from emp where empno like '%1%'

I am getting the result as

HH20060831161226

Is There A Way To Simply Programticly Create A SQL Server Table And All The Fields?

Mar 26, 2008

I am developing a asp.net app and I have a long, very long list of data fields.
The values of the data fields have to be saved to a SQL database. The list is so long that it a pain in the ass to have to write all the code even to declare an object and all its properties by hand. So...
I made a list of all the field names and types and load it all up in an array. Then I wrote a bunch of macros to write all the properties one by one with the corredt type for the object I needed to create instead of doing it all one by one by hand.
I want to do the same thing with the Database. I dont want to have to hand define all the fiedls 1 by 1 by hand in the IDE. I want to write a simple macro, a loop theat loops thru my array and creates a field with the field name and type that it says in the array.
Simple enough.. Now I have the table defined already since that was simple enough. It is the 200 ++ fields that I dont wanna do.
So, please what is the code I need (in VB) to create 1 simple field in an existing table. Say the table is called "Table1" in the database "Database1" and the field I want is to be called "Field1" and to be 250 chr string..... ???
 Thank you Marc

SQL Server 2008 :: No Option To Automatically Partition Table Based On Unique Values Of Column?

Jun 17, 2015

A common partitioning scenario is when the partition column has the same value for every record in the partition, as opposed to a range of values. Am I the only person who wonders why there isn't an option to automatically partition a table based on the unique values of the partition column? Instead of defining a partition function with constants, you ought to be able to just give it the column and be done. This would be particularly valuable for tables partitioned on a weekly or monthly date; when new data is added it could simply create a new partition if one doesn't already exist.
