Memory Usage Relative To Size Of Database

Nov 29, 2007

Does anyone know if there is a rough guide in terms of how much memory SQL server will normally use relative to the size of the actual databases that it is hosting?

For example, I'm working on a server that hosts only about 250-300 MB worth of data (including all of the full text indexes, etc.) but the sqlservr.exe process is using 1.25 GB of ram. Also Page Reads/sec is around 1200 -- despite there being over 5 GB of RAM available and not being used (the PF is about 3.25 GB, total memory in the machine is 8GB). Below that w3wp.exe uses only 290 MB and lsass.exe uses only about 225 MB. The machine is a web/database server that is hosting ASP.NET 2, ASP.NET & Classic ASP pages (and the associated databases). For the amount of hardware, the server seems to be responding to requests on the slow side. While some of this is probably due to the legacy code-base, there seems to be a noticeable difference in speed after SQL Server is restarted.

Thanks,

Jeremy

SQL Server 2008 :: Usage Of Built-in Functions On Columns Ignores / Excludes Indexes On That Column?

May 25, 2015

Somewhere i read..that in SQL Server...usage of Built-in Functions on Columns, makes query optimizer to ignore indexes on that column...!

So lets say we have table EMP with Emp_id and Emp_Name....

Also we have Non-Clustered index on Emp_Name.

So following query would NOT use Non-Clustered index on Emp_Name column.

SELECTLEFT(emp_name, 3) as emp3
FROMdbo.EMP

Is this true? i am using SQL Server 2008.

SQL Server 2008 :: Restrict Resources Usage Based On Individual Databases In Resource Governor?

Aug 12, 2009

How to restrict resources usage based on individual Databases in resource governor?

We have many databases in one instance; I would like to restrict resource usage to each database respectively.

I created 2 pools as pool_login, pool_DBNAME, and 2 workload groups as GroupLogin,GroupDBNAME, and also the classifier function. After setup above, I use following statement to check what sessions are in each group .

Even if there are spids which are accessing database DBNAME, I can’t see that they fall into the group GroupDBNAME and pool pool_DBNAME.

SELECT s.group_id, CAST(g.name as nvarchar(20)), s.session_id, s.login_time, CAST(s.host_name as nvarchar(20)), CAST(s.program_name AS nvarchar(20))
FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s
INNER JOIN sys.dm_resource_governor_workload_groups g
ON g.group_id = s.group_id
ORDER BY g.name
GO

Following is the code to create pool, group, classifier function:

USE master
GO;
-- Create a resource pool pool_login.
CREATE RESOURCE POOL pool_login
WITH

[Code] ....

-- Create a workload group to use this pool.

CREATE WORKLOAD GROUP GroupLogin
USING pool_login;
GO
CREATE WORKLOAD GROUP GroupDBNAME
USING pool_DBNAME;

[code]....

-- Register the classifier function with Resource Governor.

ALTER RESOURCE GOVERNOR WITH (CLASSIFIER_FUNCTION= dbo.rgclassifier_v1);
GO

[HELP!] How Do You Make The Database Path Relative In The Connection String?

Oct 10, 2006

Hi everyone,

I am working on a Hospital Information System project with a team of 6.Each one of us builds or modifies a part of the system and shares the project over a common repository. The problem here is that we use the absolute path of the database in our connection string. Although the directory structure of our project is the same for each member, since the main project folder itself is stored in different locations on each person's computer (for example, one may have it stored in c:My Documents and the other in d: My Documents), we are forced to modify the connection string manually each time someone else from the team updates the repository with the database. How do we make the path of the database relative so that we don't have to modify the connection string manually each time after receiving an update from the repository?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Update The Database Physical File Location In Master Database

I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).

ALTER DATABASE [User_DB]
MODIFY FILE (NAME = User_DB_log, FILENAME = 'I:SQLLogs User_DB_log.ldf')

SQL Server 2008 :: Script To List All Database Level Permissions In A Database?

FROM [sys].[database_permissions] sec
JOIN [sys].[database_principals] prin
ON sec.[grantee_principal_id] = prin.[principal_id]
WHERE sec.class = 0

but the results are this: 2 columns - User and Permission

User Permission
User1 GRANT CONNECT

IS there a way in SQL Server (2005/2008/2012) to run a script against a Database that will show all users that have permissions to that Database and the type of permissions?

sicerely this dashboard is good, if any one is watching daily, please advice their experiences here.

How Can I Get The 'entire' Database, Structure And Data, From SQL Server 2008 To SQL Server 2005?

Jun 20, 2008

1) I can't get the 'copy database' function to work from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2005. I connect ok. Everything goes to the last step and then it fails.2) I cant get a SQL server 2008 backup to restore on SQL SEerver 2005 either.
The only way I know that works is to script the creation of all tables then export and import. This does work.
How can I get the 'entire' database, structure and data, from 2008 to 2005?

SQL Server 2008 :: Capture Database / Server Name In A Derived Column To Identify Source Of Data?

Feb 1, 2012

I am task with identifying the source database name, id, and server name for each staging table that I create. I need to add this to a derived column on all staging tables created from merging same tables on different servers together.

When doing a Merge Join, there is no way to identify the source of data so I would like to see if data came from one database more than the other servers or if their are duplicates across servers.

The thing that bugs me about SSIS Data Flow task is there is no way to do an easy Execute SQL Task after I select my ADO.NET Source to get this information because my connection string is dynamic and there is no way of know which data source is being picked up at runtime.

For Example I have Products table on Server 1 and 2:

Server 2 has more Products and would like to join the two together to create a staging table.

I want see the following:

Product ID, Product Name, Qty, Src_DB_ID, Src_DB_Name, Src_Server_Name
1 IPAD 1000 2, MyDB1, Server1
100 ASUS Pad 40 1, YourDB, Server2

get database name and server name in DATA FLOW only (without using a for each in Control Flow)

SQL Server 2008 :: Identify If Remote Login Resolved Database Server Via IP / Servername Or FQDN

Feb 16, 2015

Is it possible to view the Connection String information of a remote login/session? I want to know if the login is looking-up the database server via IP address, servername (NetBIOS name) or fully-qualified domain name (FQDN).

Using these DMVs I can get a lot of relevant information:

sys.dm_exec_sessions
Program Name (eg. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio),
Client Interface Name (eg. .Net SqlClient Data Provider)
sys.dm_exec_connections
Net Transport (eg. TCP),
Client Net Address and TCP Port

but not how the server's IP address was resolved. Is the connection string ever sent by the client to the server, or just used for DNS lookup?

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Check Progress Of Database

Jul 18, 2012

Our database crashed this morning and went into recovery mode.how I can track the progress of the recovery to determine how long it might take? The error log shows that it started up all the databases, then shows the recovery messages fr the msdb database, then shows that sql server is ready for client connections. I don't see any messages about my database recovery or the number of transactions to roll forward or background. If i run the sys.sp_readerrorlog and search for my database name, the only line returned is the starting up database message.

I do expect the database to take a while to recovery as it is about 8TB, there is plenty of free disk space about 3TB.The database started recovery while a transaction log backup was running so that backup failed, the last transaction log backup was taken 2 hours before recovery started. The last full backup completed about 5 days ago. The transaction log backup occurs every 2 hours and is typically around 16GB.

SQL Server 2008 :: Master Database Missing

I wouldn't have thought I need to restore the master database because my SSMS works fine and I can query the master database. I can also see it in the drop down list of available databases in the Query Designer toolbar. The problem is just that I can't see it in the list of databases. I can see all the other databases I've created, and I can see the master database in the DATA folder. But not in the SSMS.

SQL Server 2008 :: Run All Stored Procedures In A Database

I'm looking for an easy way to run all stored procedures in a database that match a specified criteria.

Under normal curcumstances, I'd create a "master" procedure that would call each one in turn using the "EXECUTE" syntax.

As there will be around 140 procedures (there are a few more but they are used for different purposes), I'd like to try and execute them dynamically.

Is there any way of finding out which procedures match the pattern of "usp_merge_*" for the name and executing it?

SQL Server 2008 :: Database In Recovery Pending

Jun 12, 2015

I have a DB shown as recovery pending when running the following:

SELECT Name, state_desc
FROM sys.databases;

The DB was created by someone outside of our team using the Full Recovery model & I can see that no transaction log backups have been taken for this, causing the log to growth to a large size.

The MDF is only 5,120kb but the TRN has grown to 10,773,120kb

When I checked the Server I could see the data area had run out of space so I have freed up some space for this so now have 2.5gb available as a short term solution.

The MDF & LDF files are still visible & when checking the SQL log the DB is being reported as having a Full Transaction Log.

Essentially I want to change the Recovery Model from Full to Simple, Reduce the size of the transaction log & bring the DB back online. Luckily this DB is only used by a handful of users but I still need to get it up & running asap.
