SQL Server 2008 :: Can Bulk Insert Only Desired Column From A Flat File To Table
Mar 18, 2015
Can we bulk insert only the desired column from a flat file to a table?
I am using SSIS to bulk insert from a file with more than 200 columns. I am trying to find a way I can bulk insert them to multiples table through SSIS.
The one way I can think is pre map the columns from the file to the destination tables. Build numerous Bulk Insert tasks to achieve that. But not sure if SSIS will let me do that.
I have a text file with a single column that i need to bulk insert into a table with 2 colums - an ID (with identity turned on) and col2
my text file looks like:
row1 row2 row3 ... row10
so my bulk insert i have like this: BULK INSERT test FROM 'd: estBig.txt' WITH ( DATAFILETYPE = 'char', FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = ' ' )
but i get the error:
Server: Msg 4866, Level 17, State 66, Line 1 Bulk Insert fails. Column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 1. Make sure the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.
However, as you can see from the text file, there is only one column, so i dont have any field terminators.
I am running a set of SQL statements on a SQL server, to insert flat file data into a SQL table. The flat file is already FTP'ed to the SQL server. I seem to be getting an error, which is possibly pointing to a permissions issue
The statements:
BULK INSERT [Jedox_prod].[dbo].[B_BP_Customer] FROM 'c:jedox_dailyjdcom4401.txt' WITH ( FIRSTROW = 2, MAXERRORS = 0, FIELDTERMINATOR = '|', ROWTERMINATOR = ' ' ) GO
The error is : Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot bulk load because the file "c:jedox_dailyjdcom4401.txt" could not be opened. Operating system error code 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 1815)
If it is permissions issue, how do I overcome this?
I have to perform a bulk Import on a regular Basis and have created a script to do this. The Problem is that the .csv file has 12 Columns and the table to Import into has 14. To Workaround this discrepancy I have decided to use a Format file. The Problem is that how to create one.
I hope this is easy stuff for you.. First of all i searched the forum but didnt exactly find what iam searching for:
I have a File folder which contains 1..n Files of the same type. The files contain a DateValue at the beginning of each row. I now want to read the first Record of the file - extract the datevalue and search in my Importtable if there are any records with that Date. If there are allready Records with this date i know i allready imported that file and skip it in my For each File Container. If no records where found I want to copy them from the file to the table.
So I have a flatfile source and thoght I just make an oledb command task afterwards which looks like "Select count(*) from Import where Processdate = ?. and then a conditional split if the count == 0 or not... but i have problems getting the Count value out auf the OLD DB Command Task because everytime I try to add an outputcolumn i get the message: "An Output cannot be added to the output collection" and since there is no possibility to map an expression to the result...
I tried to workaround the problem using a lookup task.. but that seems to be the wrong way.
I saved the result into a csv file and then truncated the table. Now, I am trying to bulk insert the data into the table. So I used:
bulk insert rdb.dbo.scd_event_tab from 'C:userssluintel.ctrdesktopeventtab.csv' with ( codepage = 'RAW', datafiletype = 'native', fieldterminator = ' ', keepidentity, keepnulls ); go
However, I get this error:
Msg 4867, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Bulk load data conversion error (overflow) for row 1, column 1 (JOB_ID). Msg 4866, Level 16, State 5, Line 1
The bulk load failed. The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 3. Verify that the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".
I am having trouble importing a flat file that was extracted from an AS400 server, into a SQL 2005 DB table using Bulk Insert. This file contains a column (field) that is of a Packed Decimal data type. Data in all other fields is displayed normally when viewing this file in a text editor such as Note Pad or Text Pad, but this one field comes up with unknown encoding: squares, thick vertical lines, basically strange characters and no numeric data.
Does anyone have any experience dealing with file of this sort?
I can't use DTS nor DTSwizard as I need to put it in a .sql and run it through a command line via .bat file (it's more for the users).
Each row ends with an EOL character, the fields are all fixed width, but I have a little problem here, some rows are empty but just with a EOL character.
I'm importing a large csv file two different ways - one with Bulk Import Task and the other way with the Data Flow Task (flat file source -> OLE DB destination).
With the Bulk Import Task I'm putting all the csv rows in one column. With the Data Flow Task I'm mapping each csv value to it's own column in the SQL table.
I used two different flat file sources and got the following:
I have a record in an Excel format (Excel 2010) and I would like to bulk import that into SQL Server 2008 and also while importing, SQL Server will automatically create a new table based on the header fields or row of the source file.
I am not sure if SQL Server 2008 has this capabilities.
Overall goal: Write a Bulk Insert statement using the UNC path of a filetable directory.
Issue: When using the UNC path of the filetable directory in a Bulk Insert Statement, receiving "Operating system error code 50(The request is not supported.)" Looking for confirmation as to whether this is truly not supported.
Environment: SQL Server 2012 Standard. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
I have two table 'Cal_date' and 'RPT_Invoice_Shipped'.Table cal_data has column month_no, start_date and end_date. And table RPT_Invoice_Shipped has columns Day_No, Date, Div_code, Total_Invoiced, Shipped_Value, Line_Shipped, Unit_Shipped, Transaction_Date.
I am using below insert statment to insert data in RPT_Invoice_Shipped table.
insert into [Global_Report_Staging].[dbo].[RPT_Invoice_Shipped] (Day_No, Date, Div_code, Total_Invoiced, Transaction_Date) select , CONVERT(DATE,Getdate()) as Date, LTRIM(RTRIM(div_Code)), sum(tot_Net_Amt) as Total_Invoiced, (dateadd(day, -1, convert(date, getdate()))) from [Global_Report_Staging].[dbo].[STG_Shipped_Invoiced] WHERE CONVERT(DATE,Created_date )=CONVERT(DATE,Getdate()) group by div_code
while inserting in column Day_No in RPT_Invoice_Shipped table, I have to use formula (Transaction_Date-start_date+1) where Transaction_Date from STG_Shipped_Invoiced and start_date from Cal_date table. I was using datepart (mm, Transaction_Date) so it gives month_no, and this month_no we can join with month_no of Cal_date table and fetch start_date from Cal_date table, so that we can use start_date for formula (Transaction_Date-start_date+1).
But I am getting difficulty to arrange this in above query. how to achieve this?
I just wanted to insert only SubjectIds into my table 'Subjects' which has the follwing schama ignoring the classes The row delimeter is " " and the column delimeter is ' | '
Table Subjects {
ID (Autoincrement) SubjectId varchar(20) }
Can any one provide the format file for doing this or suggest anyway to do this? Please do note that the file may contain millions of records
I have two versions of "rsk.txt" one with 1.9mill rows and one with the first 2000 rows only. The files have one column only with 115 characters that I'll split in to several columns later using SUBSTRING. The one with 2000 rows fires in to the database with no problems whatsoever using this exact code, the other one throws the following error:
Server: Msg 4866, Level 17, State 66, Line 1 Bulk Insert fails. Column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 1. Make sure the field terminator and row terminator are specified correctly.
How can I resolve this problem?
EDIT: I tried several different row- and fieldterminators but this exact one works for the small data-file so I assume it should also work for the large one...the large one is however copyed directly using binary ftp from a unix-filesystem and the small one is manually copied into a new txt-file using UltraEdit.
Hi, I have a problem with BULK INSERT. I created the following table:
Code Snippetcreate table Test (id char(4), name nvarchar(16), last char(1))
I am trying to bulk insert data from ASCII (not unicode) file with only two rows: 0011First name 0018Second name
Since it is a fixed length file, I am using the following format file:
Code Snippet 8.0 3 1 SQLCHAR 0 4 "" 1 ID HEBREW_CI_AS 2 SQLCHAR 0 16 "" 2 NAME HEBREW_CI_AS 3 SQLCHAR 0 0 " " 3 Last HEBREW_CI_AS
With bcp utility everything works just fine!
Code Snippet bcp Demo.dbo.test in c: est -T -f c: est.fmt
But when I use BULK INSERT in the following form:
Code Snippet BULK INSERT Test FROM 'c:Test' WITH ( FORMATFILE='c:Test.fmt', CODEPAGE='OEM' );
I am getting error Server: Msg 4863, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 2 (name).
Now, one interesting thing: if I change the name field from nvarchar to varchar, it is working with BULK INSERT as well. Can anybody explain what is going on here?
I'm able to successfully import data in a tab-delimited .txt file using the following statement.
BULK INSERT ImportProjectDates FROM "C: mpImportProjectDates.txt" WITH (FIRSTROW=2,FIELDTERMINATOR = ' ', ROWTERMINATOR = '')
However, in order to import the text file, I had to add columns to the text file to match the columns that exist in the table. The original file is an export out of another database and contains all but 5 columns from my db.
How would I control which column BULK INSERT actually imports when working with a .txt file? I've tried using a FORMAT FILE, however I kept getting errors which I tracked down to being a case of not using it with a .txt file.
Yes, I could have the DBA add in the missing columns to the query from the other DB to create the columns, however I'd like to know a little bit more about this overall.
I am trying to BULK INSERT csv files using a stored procedure in SQL SERVER 2008R2 SP3. Although the files contain several thousand lines and BULK INSERT returns no errors, no data is actually imported into the table. Every field in the table is a NVARCHAR(50) datatype.
Here is the code for the operation (only the parameters for the insert itself):
set @open = 'bulk insert [DWHStaging].[dbo].[Abverkaufsquote] from ''' set @path = 'G:DataStagingDWHStagingSourceAbverkaufsquote' set @params = ''' with (firstrow = 2 , datafiletype = ''widechar'' , fieldterminator = '';'' , rowterminator = '' '' , codepage = ''1252'' , keepnulls);'
The csv file originates from a DB2 database. Using exactly the same code base I can import several other types of CSV files without problem.
The files are stored on the local server with as UCS2 Little Endian and one difference is that the files that do not import do not include a BOM. The other difference is that the failed files are non-UNICODE files.
I have a file I'm trying to do some non-set-based processing with. Inorder to make sure I keep the order of the results, I want to BULKINSERT into a temp table with an identity column. The spec says thatyou should be able to use either KEEPIDENTITY or KEEPNULLS, but I can'tget it to work. For once, I have full code - just add any file of yourchoice that doesn't have commas/tabs. :)Any suggestions, folks?--create table ##Holding_Tank ( full_record varchar(500)) -- thisworkscreate table ##Holding_Tank (id int identity(1,1) primary key,full_record varchar(500)) --that doesn't workBULK INSERT ##Holding_TankFROM "d: elnet_scriptspsaxresult.txt"WITH(TABLOCK,KEEPIDENTITY,KEEPNULLS,MAXERRORS = 0)select * from ##Holding_tank
I try to import data with bulk insert. Here is my table:
CREATE TABLE [data].[example]( col1 [varchar](10) NOT NULL, col2 [datetime] NOT NULL, col3 [date] NOT NULL, col4 [varchar](6) NOT NULL, col5 [varchar](3) NOT NULL,
The first column should store double (in col2 and col3) in my table
My file: Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5,Col6,Col7 2015-04-30@|@MDDS@|@ADP@|@EUR@|@185.630624@|@2015-04-30@|@MDDS 2015-04-30@|@MDDS@|@AED@|@EUR@|@4.107276@|@2015-04-30@|@MDDS
My command: bulk insert data.example from 'R:epoolexample.csv' WITH(FORMATFILE = 'R:cfgexample.fmt' , FIRSTROW = 2)
Get error: Msg 4823, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Cannot bulk load. Invalid column number in the format file "R:cfgexample.fmt".
I changed some things as: used ";" and "," as column delimiter changed file type from UNIX to DOS and adjusted the format file with " " for row delimiter
Removed this line from format file 1 SQLCHAR 0 10 "@|@" 2 Col2 "" Nothing works ....
I'm just learning SSIS and I've hit my first bump. I am doing a bulk import from a tab delimited text file to an empty sql table that has a Idendity column defined. How do I tell the bulk insert task to skip that column when inserting from the text file. If I remove the identity column it imports the data fine, but I want to create the indentity column in the table too.
I am using SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2012. I have a very simple SSIS package with a Data Flow task that exports from an OLE DB Source to a tab-delimited unicode Flat File Destination and a Bulk Insert task that loads from the file. Both the Flat File Destination and Bulk Import are using the same code page. The Bulk Insert task is using the wide char format to read from the file. The process works fine with nvarchar and int columns, but when I add a unique identifier column it fails with "type mismatch or invalid character for the specified code page".
I have a bulk insert situation that would be nice to be able to pull off. I have a flat file with 46 columns that are to go into a table. The table, I want to have a 47th column to be updated later on by means of a stored proc saying if the import into the system was sucessful or not. I have the rowterminator set as '"' thinking that would tell SQL to begin on the next row, leaving the importstatus column null but i still receive an error.
First of all, is this idea possible within this insert statement. Secondly, if so, what would be the syntax to tell the insert statement to skip that particular column. It is the last column listed in the table so it just needs to start on the next row after it inserts the last bit of data in the flatfile.
If this is not possible, is it possible to bulk insert into a temp table?
I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.
The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?
I am transferring data from an OLEDB source to a Flat File Destination and I want the column width for all of the output columns to 30 (max width amongst the columns selected), but that is not refected in the Fixed Width Flat File that got created. The outputcolumnwidth seems to be the same as the inputcolumnwidth. Is there any other setting that I am possibly missing or is this a possible defect?
Designing a solution for loading data into SQL destination from a single 5/10 GB flat file? If yes, what kind of performance measures you have taken while designing the solution ?
Hello,I have a problem the scenario is :I have data in an excel file and now I am reading data from that file and insert that data into sql database. this is well.but the problem is that I have few fields with date time data in excel sheet. In my database I have varchar type data type for these data columns.I want to read these data columns from the excel sheet and insert only time into the data base.how can I do this I am using the following line of code for selelcting only time from the excel file. string qry = "Select CONVERT(CHAR(5),datetime,114) from [" + objStr[0] + "];";this gives me error message.help me to read the data from excel file and insert it into the sql table in desired format. Thanks in advance, junior
I am working in one company and currently I am assigned to new project for Data Migration from company X to our company Y using SSIS. I am totally new and i just completed 5 tutorial which was gien on MSDN website.
Basically client is going to send us first flat file with 1 million records with Header, Detail and Trailer records. I want to create a Package in such a way that it dumps all this first load into 7 to 8 different tables at a time. we also have to include functionlity for validation and error check. On successfull load error file should only return Header and Trailer but no detail records. If there are any errors then error file should contain Header, Detail records which were unable to load plus trailer which we have to sent back to client.
When 2nd file comes that time we have to check whether this is new records or change (update) one depending on Flag which tells it.
This is basically high level idea of my Package what i need to create. If u guys have any question then let me know.
I know you guys are very experienced one. Anyone of you please give me some detail idea on it I would really appricate it. I have very limited time line for it.
I'm new to SQL Server 2005 SSIS. I'm trying to do something very simple, but I cannot figure it out, PLEASE HELP!
I have a flat file, which I read and then insert the data in a database table, that works fine. The problem is that I don't want to insert duplicate records. For example; if I run the package again, it will appent to the table. What I need to do is that if the package runs again, check if the record already exist, based one two columns, date and hour, and do not insert the record.
